PS 9’s ANNUAL AUCTION CATALOG
March 14, 2015
Dear Proud PS 9’ers,
As you know, we have chose π as the theme for this year’s auction gala, as the event coincides with the date
3.14.15. Pi celebrates our children’s’ infinite ability to always be different, sometimes irrational, and I wish I
could say… never repeat themselves.
Yet, it is more than a unique mathematical representation. The word pie also symbolizes what is wholesome,
inclusive, and unbroken about our community and its ability to consistently come together in ways that makes the
whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Thank you for all the hard work and sacrifices you have made in bringing together parents, donors, administration
and community to ensure that our favorite learning institution is generously supported through contributions of
money, expertise and most importantly-- your time.
PS 9 is blessed to have a high annual giving participation rate from its parents in comparison to other public
schools. Not to be outdone, the PS 9 administration is talented, knowledgeable, and supportive of our children
and our efforts to better their educational experience. Finally, our intimate community of merchants that never
tires of requests for their support. Without the desire and cooperation of these diverse groups working towards
the common goal of supporting PS 9, this event wouldn’t be possible.
Furthermore, I would like to take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on some highly motivated, caring and
special people. I want to thank Pam Hacker for her innate ability to always say ‘yes’ before even hearing the task
at hand. I would also like to recognize first time donations chair, Mia Pavlov, for jumping in when we needed her
then finding out how difficult this responsibly is and always, I mean always, having a smile on her face.
My food gods, Mike Marino and Michael Gat, who made our dream of having our neighboring restaurants come
and share their talents while saving us money a reality! Scot Steinberg for taking us to the next level with mobile
bidding and seeing this as an opportunity to increase sponsorships while making more money for our children.
And our ever present Donations Queen, Angela Zagoren, who constantly utilizes her special gift to pull donations
out of anything. Lastly, I would like to thank all the pieces of the PS 9 Pi who toiled endlessly behind the scenes
helping plan this great event.
The proceeds of this year’s auction will support teaching assistants, art, library, movement, music, Spanish and
the Common Core Learning Standards. Please raise your paddles high and bid often! All proceeds benefit your
beautiful children and the school we all love so much.
Sincere gratitude,
Janine Flora Soroken
2014 and 2015 Auction Chair and proud Third Grade Mom to Lillian
Fund-‐A-‐Wish 2015 Continuing the Teacher -‐-‐ Student Enrichment and Growth at PS9 As you are aware, our children are now measured against the new National Common Core Learning Standards, CCLS. The mission of ensuring “College and Career Ready” status has been escalated for teachers requiring that every child is equipped for the challenges of a constantly changing technological society. Research has shown that student achievement is directly related to teacher quality. Even with the best teachers, instruction can only be optimal if the practitioners have been trained in the best practices. As Dr. Irwin, our CCLS Network consultant, said, “You would expect that your physician be trained in the best practices. Why would you expect less from your teachers?” Moreover, in this diverse city in which we live, our children have diverse needs. We know that in every classroom there are students who excel and students that struggle. The goal of every teacher at PS 9 is to meet the unique needs of each and every student in their classroom, regardless of their needs. Additional teacher enrichment is essential in addressing the needs of our students across this learning spectrum. The staff at PS 9 has always been committed to being a professional-‐learning community; working together to extend learning through professional development. In recent years, the resources provided to schools through the New York City Department of Education to do this work most effectively, have been dwindling. This is happening at a time when the support is most needed, as schools are tasked with transitioning to the Common Core. This is all placing a heavy burden on the shoulders of our teaching staff that we, the committed parents of PS9 children, have to share. How then do we support our school with the resources required to meet the challenge at the highest level? How do we support the work required to ensure the curriculum has been updated and re-‐aligned with state-‐of-‐the-‐art practice and enriched with additional materials for the classroom and library? On Auction night, raise your paddles high and often as we aim to raise $45K for Fund-‐ A-‐Wish to support continued learning, enrichment and academic growth for teachers and to fund costs associated with implementing the CCLS such as purchase of CCLS aligned material, content and practices. Nine Ways to Win
1.
Live Auction – There will be many enticing and irresistible packages presented by our auctioneer
for live bidding. Some of the items are suitable for people to bid on together. Should you pool your
money with friends to bid together on these packages, remember to use only one paddle number when
bidding.
2.
Fund-A-Wish – Be sure to raise your paddle when the auctioneer calls for Fund a Wish during
the Live Auction to raise direct funds for the PS 9 school budget. Each year the school’s administration
and the PA Board identify a special wish or need for the school. The auctioneer will open bidding at
$2,500 and will proceed in declining increments of $1,000, $500, $100 and $25. Please refer to the FundA-Wish auction item in the Live Auction section of the catalog for a complete description of this year’s
Fund-A-Wish.
3.
Silent Auction – Hundreds of great packages have been assembled from the donations that you
solicited. They are grouped by category and will be on display throughout the main hall. Each package
has its own package number for mobile bidding.
4.
Grab Bag – Each $25 grab bag item you purchase comes with its own winning number, which
corresponds to your “grab bag” gift. Each grab bag gift is guaranteed to equal or exceed the price of the
gift and may include gift certificates to favorite local restaurants, gourmet food items, beauty treatments,
gym trials and more!
5.
$100 Raffle – For $100, win the chance to get any Live Auction item of your choice. On auction
night, just look for the sign-up table near registration to purchase tickets. Between fifty and one hundred
of these tickets will be sold and the lucky winner will be announced right before the Live Auction begins.
If you will not be present on auction night, you must forward your live auction choice to Mary
Tsimenoglou by March 10th.
6.
General Raffle Tickets – Raffle tickets will be available for purchase during the event. They are
$5 each or a book of 5 for $20. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn during the auction event. You
need not be present to win.
7.
Teacher Treat Raffles – How much does your child love his or her teacher? You can purchase
tickets to outings from PS 9 teachers and staff, including Principal for the Day, Assistant Principal for the
Day and Movie and a Pizza with 4th Grade Teachers. Tickets range from $10 for 1 to $100 for 15. The
winning tickets will be drawn the Sunday after Auction. You need not be present to win.
8.
Heads and Tails – Sign up to play this $25 game at the table next to registration and receive a
prop that entitles you to play. When the game begins, before the live auction, only those with props will
have a chance to play and to win a prize package. Just follow the auctioneer’s cues, and you could be the
last one standing, taking the prize which will be announced at the event.
9.
Wine-Pull – Are you a wine lover? Take a chance to win some amazing wines. $25 allows you
to pull a numbered cork from the Wine Pull Bowl; $100 allows you to pull 5 corks. Each cork
corresponds to a bottle of wine valued from $15--$100+. You might be the lucky winner of some very
valuable wine, but no matter what, you will have wine to drink tomorrow!
Payment and Winnings:
You can pay by cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or AmEx. Remember that your bid in excess of the
value stated is fully tax deductible as a charitable contribution. Receipts will be provided. Please make
sure you check out and take your receipt and winnings on auction night. Items left on auction night
that the auction committee is able to deliver will be subject to a $25 delivery fee regardless of value,
however we are not responsible for uncollected items after auction night. Any other items left behind
will be deemed gifts to Parents of PS 9.
Auction Rules of Play
1.
Arrive and Check-in
When you arrive at the Landmark, register at the check-in table where you will receive your bidder
number/paddle for the evening. You will also be prompted to set up your Mobile Bidding for the evening
– No Paper Sheets! If needed, a copy of an addendum to this catalog, listing additional packages and
information will be available to view but all items will be on Mobile Bidding.
2.
Register for Express Check-out
We respectfully ask that you register for Express Check-out, which will speed up the check-out process at
the end of the event. At the end of the evening, those who take advantage of this option can go directly to
Item Pick-up, avoid the cashier line altogether, collect their receipt and winnings, and leave. Express
Check-out is quick and easy, but you must have a credit card to take advantage of this time-saving
system. To register for Express Check-out you must swipe your credit card at the terminal and sign the
form given to you at the desk. Your credit card information is then assigned to your bidder number.
3.
Paddle Numbers
Each person or couple receives a bidder number on a paddle. Use that number when bidding in the Silent
and Live Auctions. Holding up your paddle with the bidder number facing forward will be the only
accepted method of bidding in the Live Auction.
4.
Silent Auction/ Mobile Bidding Guidelines
Log into the PS9 URL either on Friday, March 13 or at registration. Click and download the PS9 silent
auction. Search for packages or items then place your bid. Turn on the text notification to see if you
were out bid and add the hot list for items that haven’t been bid on or have low bids. The minimum
starting bid is listed on your screen along with minimum bidding increments. The highest bid at the
proper increase level at closing time constitutes the winning bid. An announcement will be made prior to
the close of the Silent Auction. Winners will be informed via text on their phone within 5 – 10 minutes
after lots close.
5.
Guaranteed Bids for Silent Auction Items
Some items will have a guaranteed bid price at the bottom of the screen. If you see something that you
MUST have, it can be yours instantly by signing the Guaranteed Bid line, which sets a price over the
stated value of the item. This takes the item off the auction block and it is YOURS!
6.
Live Auction Guidelines
Raising your paddle and being recognized by the auctioneer enters a bid. The auctioneer may specify
minimum prices at the beginning of the bidding. The auctioneer may specify a minimum raise at any
time during the bidding. The highest bidder (as recognized by the auctioneer) must purchase the item. In
the event of a dispute, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final authority to determine a successful
bidder or to re-offer and re-sell the item. On the fall of the Auctioneer’s gavel, title to the item will pass
to the winning bidder, who then assumes full risk and responsibility.
7.
Check-out and Item Pick-up
Benefactor, Sponsor and Friend level donors do not need to go through Check-out or Item Pick Up,
provided they have registered for Express Check-out. The Auction Committee will arrange for a mutually
convenient time to deliver such purchases.
For guests that have pre-registered for Express Check-out at the event, go directly to Item Pick-up. For
all others, please go to the cashier, pay for your items and then proceed to Item Pick-up. All winnings
and receipts must be taken home on auction night. Delivery of unclaimed items will result in an
automatic $25 charge to your credit card—no exceptions. The auction committee is not responsible
for unclaimed items.
Cash, checks and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, and Amex) are accepted. Please Remember: be patient
with Check-out and Item Pick Up. This is a volunteer-run event!

Dear Friends:
It is such a pleasure to add the Borough of Manhattan’s support as PS 9 undertakes its annual
auction to raise funds for a stronger school.
Every year, PS 9’s parents, grandparents, and friends come together on this festive evening to
bid on goods and professional services donated by companies, neighborhood businesses, and
the families and friends of PS 9 students.
The money raised by this auction will help pay for a broad range of auxiliary services—
assistant teachers in all classrooms, arts and music programs, field trips, and Spanish lessons—
that greatly enrich students’ educational experience.
PS 9 has distinguished itself with a team-based teaching environment in which staff,
administration, and parents work with each child to meet high academic standards. Parents’
financial support enables the school to have an assistant teacher in every classroom—a
tremendous boost to student success. Spanish, chess, technology, gym, visual arts, museum
studies, ORFF musical theory and instrumental music—these offerings make a significant
difference in student achievement at PS 9.
The Borough of Manhattan commends the consistent over-and-above work of PS 9 parents,
educators, and administrators. We wish you the best of luck in your auction and much success
in your educational mission in the year ahead.
Sincerely,
Gale A. Brewer

To the Parents, Friends, Students, Staff, and Administration of Public School 9:
It is with great pleasure that I write to welcome all those in attendance tonight at the PS 9 Annual
Auction. The entire PS 9 community looks forward to this event, which always proves to be fun
and festive.
This year’s “Pi Day” theme underscores the importance of the subject area of math. Mastery of
this topic helps foster problem-solving skills that can be applied to innumerable areas in and out
of the classroom. PS 9 has worked very hard in the last year to provide resources to allow
students to excel at home, in school and in the community. Tonight’s event is sure to bring in
important funding for math programing as well as for class trips, music programs, the chess
team, and other great resources.
It is with great pride that I represent PS 9 in the New York State Assembly, and as always, I will
continue to call for an increase in school aid to support your efforts on the ground.
Congratulations to the faculty, staff and parents on such an incredible event tonight.
Sincerely,
Linda B. Rosenthal

"INFINITE IMPRINTS"
This is a precious, wearable piece of art in the form of a necklace and matching
bracelet. The children used hammers and stamps to imprint the numbers of Pi into
strips of leather and aluminum. Three imprinted leather strips in blackened brown
make a long necklace with the silver aluminum piece wrapped around as a focal point.
The bracelet is a wider piece of brown leather that wraps around 3 times. The center
wrap is imprinted with numbers and the outer wraps are left blank. Our young students
all left their unique marks on this work, and the blank spaces represent all of the
imprints they will make in the future.

"WE ARE ALL PI"
Each child's birthday from the class is painted around the main pi symbol, representing
the number 3.14. Numerous methods were used to create the piece, involving all
children from class 1-130. This artwork also has additional content to unlock using a
special virtual reality app called Blippar, which you can download. When viewed
through your mobile device via the app, the art piece truly comes alive. The children
of 1-130 created all of the content. This truly unique art work consists of a 30' x 30' ink
on canvas piece and the Blippar virtual reality (VR) experience.

"5X5=9"
Each child in the class has drawn their representation of the number 9 on a 2"x2"
colored canvas, whether it be literally the number 9 or 9 objects that they hold dear.
The canvases have been laid out 5 across and 5 up (25 total) and arranged by color,
creating a gradient (from red to orange to yellow to green to blue) and attached to a 22"
x 22" piece of 100-year-old piece of tin ceiling. While the colors of the canvases and
the materials are varied, the final product is unified by the wonderful imagination each
child brought to the project.

"INFINITE POSSIBILITIES"
The students of 1-212 have created an amazing vibrant and colorful set of shapes and
patterns inspired by the idea that Pi represents infinite possibilities. Each unique shape
and color combination shows how -- as with Pi, snowflakes, the individual creative
spirit, and even the students themselves -- no two are alike. Framed size 35" x 20".

"IN A SPIN"
This project involved the children creating colorful spin art onto compact discs. The
class were briefly introduced to the concept of centripetal force and how this would
affect their art. This helped them to mindfully create unique patterns on the CDs using
bold, acrylic paints and our handmade spinning machine. The 25 CDs were then
compiled in a 5 x 5 arrangement to make a square of circles and set against black mat
board. The piece is custom, box-framed, dimensions: 27-5/8%u2019%u2019 x
27-5/8%u2019%u2019 with a gloss white 1-1/2%u2019%u2019 frame surround. This
piece of art has a contemporary look and is a stunning explosion of color that will be a
bright statement piece for any room.

"ROOTS AND WINGS"
From the saying "to our children we give two things: one is roots, the other is wings."
For this project, each child created a collage cut into the shape of a bird. Each of the 26
birds are attached to 2 canvases, as if the birds are perched on a branch. One canvas
depicts day; one canvas depicts night. Each canvas measures approximately 16" x 40".

2-206 Ms. Vignogna and Ms. Ferrin
"1,626 X PI"
There are 1.626 million people living in the varied and vibrant neighborhoods of
Manhattan. Together they represent a multitude of cultures, with infinite talents,
adventures and perspectives. Our children are lucky enough to call this wonderfully
diverse playground their home, and we chose to represent their shared experience of
growing up in Manhattan through this mixed media collage. In this project, each child
in 2-206 was given a single cut out of a Manhattan neighborhood. The kids colored
their "hood" in a single vivid tone with an oil pastel. Once the piece was colored, the
children chose iconic symbols representing their chosen neighborhood and their
personal experiences as a New Yorker. These objects and symbols were then affixed
to each individual piece. The neighborhoods were then assembled like a puzzle and
placed on a framed piece of wood, creating the complete island of Manhattan as seen
through the eyes of our children. Approximate dimensions are 18"x 48".

masterfully interpret an individual Matisse cutout to be combined with those of their
classmates for a striking final product. The canvases measure 18"x24" each. Four of
the 5 canvases will be paired, so there will be 3 final artworks from this class up for

"PI IS NATURE'S READY-MADE"
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
William Blake "To See a World..." (from "Auguries of
Innocence")
This beautiful installation consists of a signed rubber vase, soil, gravel, plants, wood
and glass. (All supplies were donated generously by PLANT SHED.) Our children
are Pi crazy, and were especially enthralled with how it exists in nature. They related
Pi with the Golden Ratio and Fibonacci's Spiral, found in energy and wave- movements,
in hurricanes, galaxies, shelves, petals of flowers, the pattern of life in the sun flower,
the spiral of our DNA, the Golden Ratio between the parts of the Human Body. So
inspired by thebeauty of math all around us, the class designed this garden of Pi. Vase

"INFINITE POSSIBILITIES"
Like the number Pi, each child grows embraces infinite possibilities. In this project,
each student was given 1-3 white silk rose petals to design/color 2 digits of the Pi
number. Then, each child glued their 2 digit petals, in the order of Pi, swirled around
the cylinder-shaped, white rice-paper cover of a desk lamp (measuring 30" x 10" x 5").
Finally the digits meet the shape of pi, made of the silk rose-petals by the teacher. As
the 5th graders will be entering a middle school soon, we feel a new world with its
infinite possibilities is opening to us.

create. The artwork is a 30" x 40" framed print of the collected drawings of the
students of 5-340. As their final year at PS 9 began, they were asked to draw a vision
they have for themselvesor the world around them. The drawings have been collected
and collaged into a single art piece, with their personal written reflections on their
work captured at the bottom. The art piece has been hand colored after digital
printing. This piece captures a magical time in the life of our children when they
believe all possibilities are achievable, like flying to Mars through a wormhole or
signing a world peace treaty to end wars. Priceless.
