The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University invites applications from
talented, enthusiastic individuals, who are interested in gaining training and experience in the
development of state-of-the art materials for biomedical applications.
The successful candidate will:
-
perform biological assays with bacterial and mammalian cells
develop and refine protocols for the measurement of proteins (e.g. ELISA) and small
molecules (e.g. GC/MS and LC/MS)
measure physical and chemical characteristics of materials
maintain bacterial and mammalian cell lines
research and design test protocols
make observations, analyze data, and interpret results
prepare and deliver both oral and written reports to small- or medium-sized groups
maintain a thorough and orderly lab notebook
interface with researchers of many different backgrounds and levels of expertise
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Materials Science or a related
discipline. Two or more years hands-on work experience is preferred in one or more of the following
areas: biological assays, bioengineering, materials characterization, biochemistry. Advanced education
and/or practical internships during education may count toward experience. Good organizational
skills and attention to detail are also required.
Additional Qualifications:
Familiarity with medical device approval and regulation processes and ISO standards is a plus, as is
some knowledge of engineering principles (diffusion, mass and energy transfer, etc.), basic
programming, and/or analytical chemistry methods. Exceptional problem solving abilities, a high-level
of self-motivation, and the capacity to make independent decisions without relying on specific
instructions are highly desired.

This is a term position for 1 year with the possibility of renewal.
