Deputy Head (Academic)
id:572507
An experienced, enthusiastic, highly professional and dedicated school leader is required to join our successful team
Westbourne expects to rank as the 9th best co-educational IB boarding school this year and about 5th next year. An experienced,
enthusiastic, highly professional and dedicated school leader is required to join our successful and driven senior leadership team.
We have the highest expectations of ourselves and a clear and inspiring vision of our future. The successful candidate will relish
working with and, in 3-5 years, leading such a motivated and engaged team, firmly committed to achieving our goals.
Established in 1896, Westbourne School has a strong tradition of academic excellence. We provide a, comprehensive, highly
supportive and top-quality boarding and day education for students aged 3 to 18 and have a long-standing track record of
success. We have a 98% pass rate at GCSE with students achieving over 50% A*/A grades. 100% of our IB graduates go on to
attend their first choice University. Half to two-thirds go on to the prestigious Russell Group universities and about two-thirds are
accepted into medicine, law or engineering. In four short years we have built our international student body to comprise 20% of
the school roll from over 15 countries whilst retaining a distinctly British character.
We now require a first-class school leader to consolidate our academic success and lead us through the next exciting stage of our
development, both locally and internationally.
Working closely with the Principal, Head of Junior School, Chairman and Finance Director, you will have primary responsibility for
continually raising academic standards and maximising student achievement. This will include continuous improvement of our
monitoring, assessment and self-evaluation, execution of our performance management programme, development of new courses
in line with the developments in (English) GCSES and International GCSEs, teaching designated classes and setting and updating
the timetable.
You will have a well-considered and highly developed educational philosophy. You will be outcome-driven with a proven record of
success, possessing strong organisational and process management skills, and natural gravitas and commercial acumen. And your
leadership, communication and interpersonal skills will ensure that you build strong individual relationships and a robust esprits de
corp between staff, students and parents alike, and that you carry your team and stakeholders with you.
In terms of character, you will have confidence commensurate with your experience and capabilities, the wisdom to understand
that greater, more challenging opportunities still lie ahead, and the energy and commitment to grasp the nettle and meet these
challenges with verve and vigour.
Considerable independent sector experience is essential and experience of boarding schools and international students is highly
desirable. Experience of the IB Diploma Programme will confer significant advantage and a specific knowledge of recent and
ongoing developments to GCSEs and International GCSEs is essential.

Head of Computer Science
id:572348
Enthusiastic graduate with a passion for computing to lead & shape the dept & School ICT strategy for the future.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-qualified graduate who is passionate about their subject to lead and develop our Computer
Science department from September 2015. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual to develop the curriculum to meet the
needs of our pupils and to be a key participant in setting whole School ICT strategy and has arisen due to the retirement of the
current Head of Department. The post is permanent and full-time, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach
throughout the School from Year 7 to 13.
It is an exciting time in the Computer Science department at Sir William Perkins’s School.
In September 2014, the Years 7 to 9 curricula were re-written to move from ICT to Computer Science. ICT is now taught in the
other academic departments as part of their schemes of work and so the Computer Science curriculum now focuses on teaching
how a computer works, designing algorithms and coding. The department has this year run trips to Kew Gardens (to investigate
control systems) and Bletchley Park. Computer Science is a new GCSE option this year and therefore, in September 2015, the first
group taking the CIE IGCSE Computer Science course will start. It is the intention of the School to offer Computer Science A Level
when the first cohort has gone through the IGCSE (i.e. from September 2017).
The role of Head of Department is, therefore, tremendously exciting as it will involve developing and shaping the curriculum in
Years 10 and 11 (and ultimately into Years 12 and 13). The opportunities to grow the department, and build links with other
departments are extensive.
The Head of Computer Science is responsible for encouraging enthusiasm and success in the subject and the smooth running of
the Department. What follows is not necessarily a comprehensive definition. It may be subject to modification or amendment after
consultation with the holder of the post. All full time members of staff are expected to be form tutors.
• To be familiar with the Staff handbook and support all the School’s policies
• To form good teacher-learner relationships that promote enjoyment of the subject and are in line with the aims, policies and
development plans of the School
• To inspire department members by personal example
• To relate the department’s work to the aims of the School
• To keep the Head informed about curriculum issues and the progress of the department, including any concerns, developments,
annual budget estimates, annual staffing requirements, and so on
• To review teaching methods and resources regularly and adapt them to the needs of the pupils
• To ensure that effective policies are in place so that teaching and learning meets the needs of all pupils including those with
Learning Difficulties and Disabilities and those who are Gifted and Talented
• To monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the department
• To provide efficient/effective organisation and teaching of Computer Science throughout the school
• To keep up-to-date with curriculum developments and implement changes as appropriate
• To liaise with other departments outside the Computer Science department, especially those whose work is likely to overlap
e.g. Mathematics
• To develop the curriculum and Schemes of Work for the new Computer Science IGCSE course starting in September 2015 and
ultimately for Computer Science A Level.
• To produce, and ensure that there are annual revisions of, the Schemes of Work, Departmental Handbook and Development
Plan in relation to the School Development Plan
• To ensure that data is available and used to monitor and track and record student progress & attainment, alerting tutors,
Heads of Section and parents where there are concerns
• To ensure that relevant departmental policies are implemented and updated annually
• To advise on the timetable needs of the subject, including making best use of the facilities
• To be responsible for the academic, professional and personal development of all staff in the department including appraisal
• To assist with the interviewing and appointment of applicants for posts in the department
• To run the departmental budget, including the authorising the ordering of stock, materials, equipment, textbooks, library books
etc.
• To ensure that material/displays are in place for Open Days and other School events
• To ensure that the School’s Health and Safety Policy is implemented within the department
• To attend parents evenings, open evenings, occasional Saturday events and other school functions as appropriate, and to
ensure that other members of the department do likewise
• To be a Form Tutor under the direction of the Head of Section, taking frontline responsibility for the academic and pastoral
welfare and progress of the girls in your form
• To be involved in the wider lifer of the school, supporting and initiating extra curricular activities in the department and the
school, implementing relevant aspects of the school’s Health & Safety policy
• To be involved, and take a lead role in, the development of whole school ICT matters and to liaise with the School’s IT Network
providers and IT Support function regarding IT provision in the School
• To undertake any reasonable task as directed by the Head of Section or Senior Management Team
• To strive for personal and professional development through active involvement in the School’s appraisal system and
performance management procedures
• To be committed to the safeguarding of children and young people
