International Film Festival
Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival is produced by Alliance of
Women Filmmakers (AWF). AWF is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization established to empower women filmmakers in creating diverse roles for women.
Now in its 11th year, the Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival
continues to be a strong platform for women filmmakers worldwide to
share their unique stories and cultural experiences with Los Angeles’
diverse audience. The festival's programming also reflects AWF’s mission
to educate and inform audiences of the social, political and health issues
impacting women globally.
Each year, AWF partners with an organization that serves women in order
to help raise awareness and money for women's causes. For 2015,
Alliance of Women Filmmakers is proud to support Dress for Success
Worldwide - West by hosting a clothing drive during the festival’s
opening night and donating $1 of each festival ticket purchased.
Dress for Success is a global not-for-profit organization that promotes
the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing
professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools
needed to help women thrive in work and in life.
Since starting operations in 1997, Dress for Success has expanded to more
than 139 cities in 18 countries and has helped more than 775,000 women
work towards self-sufficiency.

The Empowerment Project: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things is the incredible journey of five
female filmmakers driving more than 7,000 miles from Los Angeles to New York over the course of 30 days
to encourage, empower and inspire the next generation of strong women. This documentary spotlights 17
positive and powerful women leaders across a variety of lifestyles and industries. From flying above San
Francisco with a female pilot and sitting down with the creator of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to working in a
lab with a cancer biologist, the empowerment gals get the chance to spend a day in each woman's shoes.
Along the way, these filmmakers relay the candid insight on how these women define their success, what it
takes to be a woman in their position and valuable advice on how to improve the female role in the workplace.
Created for women by women, they challenge the audience to ask themselves, “What would you do if you
weren't afraid to fail?”

CLOSING NIGHT FILM
Fear of Water

Fear of Water revolves around two teenage girls with parallel lives who come from different socio-economic
backgrounds and meet one summer to discover friendship and a sexual awakening. The story is inspired by
actual events from the life of director Kate Lane. “I wanted to tell a story that was personal to me. I always
felt different growing up but was afraid to admit to who I was until that infamous summer. As soon as I admitted
to myself and to others, it was an amazing feeling of freedom I had never experienced...a breaking free
of sorts!”
This high-profile supporting cast includes Marcia Warren (Leap Year, The Ladykillers), Sara Stewart (“Sugar
Rush,” Philomena) and Alex Macqueen (The Inbetweeners Movie, I Give It a Year). The film’s score was written
and performed by Benson Taylor, who was styled as the “new sound of Hollywood” by MovieScope magazine
in their 24th issue. Also featured are songs from six female singer-songwriters, including critically acclaimed
artists Carrie Haber and Miri, who gained attention worldwide from her airplay on BBC London.

in Uganda and Swaziland to Canada to testify in a Peoples’ Tribunal that sheds light on the urgent need for better protection of African grandmothers’ human rights. .

A Fishy Tale is about one woman’s fight against the political machine of NOAA and the powerful salmon farming industry.

farmed fish and the environmental devastation caused by open-net fish farms that kill ocean floors and the wild salmon
surrounding them.

The Acholi tribe of Northern Uganda returns home after 20 years of civil war to discover thousands of their once-healthy
children developing a bizarre, deadly illness called nodding syndrome. Children with this disease appear to be sleepy and
“nod off.” The locals describe afflicted children as “alive in dead bodies” because they become mentally impaired.
A Question of Humanity follows a Ugandan woman who operates a small care center for these kids. In search of answers
to this medical mystery, the woman discovers the true strength of the human spirit in the midst of tremendous obstacles.

endure become apparent. However, in the midst of darkness, stories of hope and freedom emerge as each survivor shares
how she was positively impacted by the love of one woman who founded an aftercare home for sex-trafficking victims

The Green Girl is a feature-length documentary about actress Susan Oliver. To millions of Star Trek fans, she was the iconic
and original “Green Girl,” but to the first generation ever raised on television, she was much more. With over 120 major acting
credits in film and television, Oliver was a prolific actress of the '50s through the '80s. She set a number of well-publicized
records as a pilot and was one of the only women to direct major TV shows in the 1980s, and yet, many people don't even
remember her name today.

One in seven women will experience a pregnancy and postpartum mood and anxiety disorder, and one in one thousand
will suffer from postpartum psychosis. Considered the number-one complication of childbirth, up to 20 percent of women
are affected each year. However, it is the one condition during pregnancy and postpartum that is most often under-diagnosed. The documentary follows two mothers as they exposes the failing within the medical community to effectively
screen, refer and treat the more than 1.3 million mothers suffering from postpartum mood and anxiety disorders each
year in the US.

fisherman, Vince, whose honesty is both endearing and arousing. Together, they venture into an unexpected
and mysterious quest for love, only to learn reality is not always what it seems.

vow of silence, Emily's blog takes an unexpected turn when girls across the country emerge with personal
stories of sexual abuse. From the story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Steven Millhauser, The Sisterhood of Night
chronicles a provocative alternative to adolescent loneliness, revealing the tragedy and humor of teenage
years changed forever by the Internet age.

all-day tribute playing on the radio. The tribute is to a musician, Luc, with whom she'd had an affair with years ago. Now,
her dedicated husband must re-witness her love for this other man.

witness Deirdre's transformation – one that comes from her own self-acceptance and forgiveness – which ultimately leads
her to be happy for nothing.
