Gary Thrasher does a lot of caning himself -‐-‐ he'll probably be able to point you to other people... Car Detailing I promised to summarize my quest to de-‐munge the old minivan as others seem to have a similar need. It is sometime hard to compare apples to apples in cost because some folks do the engine and exterior. Gerrish wanted $250 just for the interior and were very negative about the whole idea, so this started me down this path. In general I would say that prices are negotiable depending on what you want done, but you need to be clear in order to make a fair comparison between options. I have had a great experience with Catherine Johnson who works out of her house in Hanover. Her email is: [email protected] She charges by the job and spent hours on the van interior (we didn't want the outside or engine done). She reports she loves to detail and has OCD, so this worked out fine. Other recommendations are : Steve Rich, on River Road in town, several recs Tom Kilduff auto detailing. One person suggested contacting the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Salem for a second opinion. One person reported a positive data recovery experience with DriveSavers, although he has repressed the memory of how much it cost. One person sent me a link to a helpful New York Times article by Eric Taub ("E.R. for Hard Drives"). After making the point that, "Eventually, every hard drive will fail," the article went on to discuss various data recovery options. It interviewed one of the founders of DriveSavers, who believes that hard drives are so unreliable that they should not exist. It made the analogy between backing up hard drives and flossing our teeth: We all know it's important, but few of us do it regularly. Another interesting note: DriveSavers employs a suicide prevention counselor to calm distraught customers. (At least, my situation isn't that bad.) Another person sent me links to various articles and interviews by New York Times technology writer David Pogue, who had occasion to review DriveSavers when the hard drive on his own computer crashed several years ago. The company was able to retrieve about half of his data. Pogue quotes one of DriveSavers engineers on the subject of hard drive failure: "It's not a matter of if, but when." (This was echoed by many of you, as well.) MANY respondents suggested that, in the future, I use a backup system such as Time Machine or Time Capsule, or an external backup drive such as LaCie or Maxtor. (Ironically, I had a LaCie backup for my old computer, but hadn't yet bothered to use it for my MacBook.) And many of you offered comforting and sensitive "we feel your pain" comments. Also, one fellow recommended Martin’s Quarry in Bradford, VT as usually cheaper than Twin State. We decided to just go ahead with Twin State, as they helped me figure out what I needed on the phone, offered to spread it for me, and offered to deliver it today if I wanted. We have a good size drive with parking for many cars and an L area and the cost was $325 delivered. May be less costly places but I liked their helpful attitude. Bowles in response to my initial question. Then, in summary, what we've learned... And I'm no expert, so people please feel free to correct any misconceptions... 1. Portables and permanent installations are very different, with portables designed to run a number of crucial devices, usually plugged directly into the generator itself, typically running on gasoline. 2. More permanent installations can be fueled by gas or propane. Gasoline generators have the problem of needing to be started sometimes after years of disuse, and likely therefore having starting problems. Propane generators are connected to their own tanks or if the home has a buried supply, that tank. They typically have a weekly 'exercise' period in which they fire up and self-‐test. 3. Propane residential generators come in varied sizes depending on electrical requirements, how many devices you want to have running during a power outage, and cost. There are air cooled ones (less expensive) and ones built around automobile type engines (more expensive). Less expensive is quite a relative term, as installation of a more permanent propane generator is an investment of somewhere between $5000 and $10,000 depending on size, for the air cooled type. The liquid cooled automotive type run about twice as much. 4. External generators are part of a system that includes a 'transfer switch.' This essentially sits between the power company and the generator and draws power from either the power company or the generator. 5. There are manual and automatic transfer switches. The manual ones require someone to be home, realize there's a power failure, and throw a switch. 6. The automatic ones have a microprocessor control that senses when the power company goes down and automatically starts the generator and switches to it. 7. In new construction this transfer switch can be integrated with the circuit breakers. In existing homes it typically goes on the wall of the building near where the power comes in from the power company. The transfer switch is not a small item, often measuring at least 2 x 3 feet. I'm not sure of the depth. It can have an outside enclosure around it but must be accessible to the fire department. 8. Wiring has to be done by a licensed electrician who has done many of these. It's not a do it yourself project. 9. There are apparently differences in quality of the power put out by different generator manufacturers. There is a good review in Consumer Reports online in which they tested various brands. If you have sensitive computer equipment or other electronics, the Kohler brand was highest rated for clean power that will not harm these devices... though I am sure other manufacturers may dispute this and persons may be completely satisfied with other brands. 10. In this environment, I have been told that it is necessary to install a 'cold weather kit' on the generator which helps it start in cold temperatures. I have also been advised that an auxiliary oil lubrication system is important when using propane, as propane does not by itself lubricate valves. Without oil, there is apparently more rapid wear of the engine. 11. The unit we ordered measures something like 2.5 feet wide by 4 feet long by 32 inches high. You likely don't want it in your front yard. 12. Sound is personal and relative, Kohler specifies about 65 decibels at 20 feet, which is about the sound of an air conditioner. You may not want one under your bedroom window. 13. Finally, these are not permanent power-‐producing devices, but are back up power for when the power company is down. They are not designed for people wanting to 'live off the grid,' as I understand it. And that exhausts my knowledge, I'm sure others have information to add. I went with the company I did on recommendation of others in Lyme who had used them and found them particularly responsive when it came time for service. I would highly recommend The Country Picker, a fairly local moving company based out of Conway, NH. I have been working with them for the past few months getting my cross-‐country move together, and they have been wonderful, answering all of my questions (emailed and telephoned in), advising me on the number of boxes I might need and how best to pack things, and being courteous and professional the entire time. Phil, the owner, came out to give me an estimate and was the person who supervised the inventorying and loading of my items. Matt and Jerry, the two loaders, were quick, courteous, and conscientious of watching walls and stairs, and were very efficient. If anyone has any need of a moving service, please give them a call at 603-‐447-‐3200 or check out their website: www.thecountrypicker.com. They offer moving and storage solutions and I am happy that I chose them to help me with my move. They were highly recommended to me and they exceeded all of my expectations, so if you need help with a move, please check them out. I am sure you won't be disappointed. Mulch Hay Local sources: Randy and Tony Perry, Dan Freihofer Commercial: Fairlee Feed, Mill Gardens NYC Travel The consensus seems to be that the train from White River Junction can be enjoyable if you bring your own lunch and a good book. It's apparently slow and frequently falls behind schedule. One alternative is taking the train from Randolph, VT, to NYC, which is direct, I'm told. Another travel option from this area is the bus. Obviously driving is an option as well -‐ 5 hour drive. The most popular method of traveling to NYC is to drive south of Hartford, CT, and pick up a train on the MetroNorth (http://www.mta.info/mnr/) line. This is the commuter line from southern Connecticut into Grand Central and it runs more regularly. Parking is available at stations; many Lymies like parking in New Haven and hopping the train there. Stamford, further down the line, also has a very convenient option for parking and catching the train. (Traffic obviously gets worse the closer you get to the city, so you run greater chances of congestion if you travel farther south.)
