Neighborhood News Volume 21, Issue 2 Rock Creek South March2015 Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. Gardening: Starting Plants from Seeds St. Paul United Methodist Church 3601 S. Sterling Dear Neighbors, Spring is finally here! I am so glad to see things turning green again. Speaking of green, our next meeting is all about cultivating a green thumb. We will be learning about starting plants from seeds. Are you a novice gardener ready to challenge yourself with new skills? Starting your own plants from seeds has many benefits if you yearn for less expensive and more diverse varieties in garden plants. Sara Scheil, Master Gardener, will share her knowledge and experience in starting vegetable and flower plants from seeds. This is knowledge everyone should have. If you cannot attend on Tuesday, check out page two for information about gardening classes being hosted by the Independence Community Garden Association. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Last month we met and discussed the healthy neighbor project. We brainstormed locations in Independence where the grant could help to bring healthy food to a local store. The Orowheat Bakery Outlet on 40 Highway was the most suitable candidate so far. The project involves working with a local store to provide healthier choices to their customers. While we discussed our options, we also enjoyed three wonderful types of chili. Yum yum… We look forward to seeing you Tuesday! Please support our advertisers! Sincerely, Jennifer Kiely, President Page 2 Neighborhood News Calendar of Events for 2015 All meetings held the 4th Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 3601 Sterling unless noted otherwise March 24th Gardening: Starting Plants from Seed, Sara Scheil, Master Gardener April 28th Create your own decorative paving stones (rescheduled from last year) May NO regular meeting due to Memorial Day holiday: Suggested activity Friday, May 8th: FREE admission to Powell Gardens rd June 23 Crime: Officer Syme, Independence Police Department, discussing crime trends/ patterns in our neighborhood th July 28 Healthy Eating on a Budget: Kelsey Jeter, Nutrition and Health Specialist University of MO Extension Aug 25th Saving for the Future: Family Budgeting, speaker from University MO Extension nd Sept 22 Annual Neighborhood Picnic, Phil Roberts Park Oct 27th Local History -1859 Jail and how it has a connection to Rock Creek South: Historical Society of Jackson County, Executive Director Steve Noll th Nov 24 Annual Holiday Potluck Dinner In case you miss the March 24th meeting, you can go to one of these: FREE Gardening Classes Sponsored by the Independence Community Garden Association Taught by the Get Growing Team at the Kansas City Community Gardens Location: Independence Department of Health, 515 S.
