It has a population of 238 million and a rapidly growing middle class. In 2013, its GDP growth and FDI was 5.8% and US$28.6 billion respectively. Promising sectors include consumer goods, water solutions, power generation, waste management, ports and urban transport. Batam is one of the 3,000 islands which make up the Riau Archipelago and is closest to Singapore, which is just 20km or a 45 minute ferry ride away.
