St. Francis Brooklyn’s Road To The NEC Championship
#5 SFBK 77
#3 Robert Morris 59
The St. Francis Brooklyn Women’s Basketball Team are
your 2014-15 Northeast Conference Women’s Basketball Champions after defeating Robert Morris 77-62 in
Moon Township, Pennsylvania. The Terriers are headed
to the NCAA Tournament and will be going dancing.
The Terriers will face the No. 1 ranked UConn Huskies
in Storrs, CT on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. in the opening
round.
St. Francis Brooklyn is the first team to go on the road
and win all three games to be crowned Northeast Conference Champions. They are also the first #5 seed to
take home the championship trophy.
This is the first championship for St. Francis Women’s
Basketball in program history. Sarah Benedetti was
named Most Valuable Player after scoring a career and
game-high 29 points in the victory.
Benedetti said, “It is a great feeling. I always loved being the underdog and this is the true underdog story.
It feels amazing. We have never been in this situation
before, but our experience with our 4 seniors and one
junior really builds our team chemistry and that helps
us when we had to make big shots to win the game.”
An emotional John Thurston said after his Terriers won
their first championship, “I want to thank the NEC for
putting on a great tournament. They have been so helpful with every step of the way. Congratulations to Robert Morris. To have a team in the NCAA and another
team make the finals, it is like us with two teams to
make the championship game, your name is out there
with some elite programs.”
He added, “To Sal and his staff, it is so hard to beat Robert
Morris, they are extremely talented. They are so well
coached and tough to prepare for. They had a great season. To Irma Garcia, we are so grateful for her dedication
and support. Without her vision and support with women’
basketball, we wouldnt be here. Irma, and so many other
people at St. Francis Brooklyn who have been there for
years and have not been able to see a championship , we
are grateful to bring them this trophy.”
Eilidh Simpson and Jaymee Veney both added 14 points
and 5 rebounds a piece.St. Francis Brooklyn took a 32-29
lead into halftime. They turned it on from three-point
range in the second half, converting on seven of nine from
beyond the arc. As a team, the Terriers shot 10-for-17
from three point range and outscored the Colonials 30-21
from beyond the arc. Overall, St. Francis Brooklyn shot
48.2 % on 27-for-56 shooting.
Simpson said, “Robert Morris played a great game. The
first half was a back and forth battle. The second half
of the game we were able to pull away after Sarah made
some big shots. It was an unreal feeling coming down the
stretch. We went to double-overtime with Central Connecticut, so we know it is not over until that final buzzer
sounds. To win with these guys is the best feeling in the

Veney said, “You never have a feeling of relief when you play
here. Robert Morris is a great team, and they are always in it. To
win on the road and beat such a great team is extremely rewarding.”

first half, but the Terriers were able to separate themselves from
the defending Northeast Conference Champion Colonials in the

mark when Benedetti hit a three, Fechko scored two layuups,
then Alex Delaney and Eilidh Simpson hit back to back threes to
give the Terriers a 60-44 lead with 8:29 to play.

Head Coach John Thurston enters his third season as the head coach of the women’s basketball program.
Thurston will embark on his 42nd overall season this fall.
In his two seasons on the Terrier sidelines, “Coach T” has
installed a winning atmosphere around the program, both
on the court and in the classroom. In addition to his head
coaching duties at St. Francis Brooklyn, coach Thurston
was appointed a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball
Rules Committee, which he began serving on September
1st and will continue to serve until September 1st, 2018.
Academic success has been the foundation of the revival
of the Terriers’ women’s basketball program. In 2011-12,
while coach Thurston acted as the Associate Head Coach,
the team first appeared on the WBCA Academic Top-25 as
they placed tenth with an overall team grade-point average of 3.456. The following season, Thurston’s first as head
coach, the team finished tied with DePaul University for
second in the nation with a team grade-point average of
3.625. Last season, the 2013-14 Terriers capped off another successful season with a fourth-place finish with an
overall GPA of 3.608. In each of the last three seasons, the
Terriers are the only New York Metropolitan area squad to
earn the honor.
In addition to being named to their third straight
WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll, the Terriers earned
their third consecutive Northeast Conference Team Institutional Award thanks in large part to having one of their
student-athletes, Katie Fox, being named one of 20 winners of the 12th annual Division I-AAA Athletics Directors
Association (DI-AAA ADA) Scholar-Athlete Team. In addition, eleven Terriers were named to the NEC’s Academic
Honor and four were selected to the NEC Commissioner
Honor Roll.
Last year, Thurston guided St. Francis Brooklyn to
their best overall season in the program’s forty-one years
of existence. The Terriers compiled a 19-11 overall mark,
the most wins in program history while posting a 10-8 conference, which also set a new school record. Thurston’s Terriers were hard to beat at home, as they posted a 12-2 mark
at the Pope Physical Education Center, the most home
victories in school history. The team strung together an
impressive eight game win streak that began at the 2013
University of Miami Thanksgiving Tournament consolation
game against Hartford and concluded with their fifth conference victory at home against Sacred Heart.
For the first time in their existence, the team was
ranked as high as #24 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major
Poll, which included wins over three schools that qualified
for the NCAA Tournament last season (Pennsylvania, Army
and Robert Morris).
Thurston is one of only a few coaches who have
been a Head Coach at the NCAA DI, DII, DIII and NAIA levels in 26 years of coaching men’s college basketball from
1971-1997. During the early 1970’s, Thurston’s Fairleigh
Dickinson-Florham teams were known for their high scoring offense, averaging close to one-hundred points per
game.
After FDU-Florham, Thurston joined Lou Campanelli’s staff at James Madison, where he spent ten years as an
assistant and was promoted to head coach in 1985. During
his tenure, the Dukes went to four NCAA tournaments and
one National Invitational Tournament (NIT). For his tremendous efforts during the 1986-87 campaign, Thurston
was named the Colonial Athletic Association “Coach of the
Year.”
Thurston’s next coaching stop found him at Wingate University, where he spent nine years in North Carolina. He served a dual role as Athletic Director and head
basketball coach while helping the school transition from
NAIA to nationally competitive DII affiliation.
From 2001-to-2003, Thurston was appointed
General Manager at Suwanee Sports Academy in Atlanta,
Georgia. He established a widely-respected basketball
training program and brought in national events, such as
the Adidas Showtime Championship and Adidas Top-Ten
All-Start game.
While planning the Sports Academy venture,
Coach T took over the girls’ program at Marist High School
in Atlanta in 1999. During his three years at the helm, the
War Eagles broke school records for wins each year while
advancing to the State Tournament with a pair of Elite
Eight appearances. His teams were ranked in the Top-Ten
in Georgia all three years and six of his players went on to
play college basketball, five of them playing at the Division
I level.
In the fall of 2003, Thurston returned to collegiate
coaching as he served as Ann Hancock’s top assistant at
UNC-Wilmington. Two years later, Thurston moved to West
THURSTON’S TIDBITS
Palm Beach, Florida, where he was hired at Northwood
University to develop the school’s first-ever women’s basketball program. In their first two seasons of competition,
he led the Seahawks to two Florida Sun Conference titles
and their first appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in 2008 in Sioux City, Iowa. Thurston was named FSC
Coach of the Year in 2008, and had back-to-back Player of
the Year selections in current St. Francis Brooklyn assistant
coach Kaitlyn Vican (2007) and Kara Otterbine (2008).
Through his forty-plus years in the game, Thurston has gained the respect as an evaluator and developer
of talent, ranging from two NBA players, six overall NBA
draft choices, seven European professionals, four “Rookies of the Year,” three “Players of the Year,” one “Defensive
Player of the Year,” eighteen All-Conference selections,
three 2,000 point scorers and thirteen 1,000 point scorers.
Twelve of his former players have already been elected to
their school’s respective Hall of Fame.
Thurston is a 1966 graduate of Archbishop Molloy
High School, where he was an All-City performer in both
baseball and basketball under legendary coach Jack Curran. In June of 1966, Thurston was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1966 MLB June Amateur Draft. He
continued his education at Seton Hall University, where
he played both baseball and basketball for the Pirates. In
1970, he was awarded the John F. Kennedy Award as the
school’s outstanding student-athlete.

Prior to St. Francis Brooklyn: Arthur, a 5-6 guard from Allegan, Michigan, put forth an impressive resume at Allegan... Finished with 1,126 career points, making her one of only two girls in Allegan history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau...In her final season, Arthur averaged 15.2 points per game
while grabbing 7.0 rebounds a contest and dishing out 5.0 assists per game...Shot 70 percent from
the charity stripe while converting 40 percent from beyond the arc... Was named as a Detroit Free
Press and Detroit News Honorable Mention All-State selection in her final season while also garnering First Team All-State Honors from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan... Was also
named team Most Valuable Player for the fourth time, becoming the only player in the program’s
Career History
history to achieve that feat all fourIndividual
years. The sharpshooter
also broke the schools record for most
three-pointers in a season (40) and in a career
(72).

St. Francis Brooklyn reaches 1st NCAA tournament
MOON, Pa. -- The St. Francis Brooklyn women’s basketball team completed its improbable run to the NCAA tournament by
upsetting host Robert Morris 77-62 to win the Northeast Conference on Sunday.
It is the first title in program history for St. Francis (15-18), which advance to its first NCAAs. This victory came less than a
week after the men’s basketball team lost to Robert Morris in the finals of the NEC tournament. The men’s program is one
of five schools that have been part of Division I basketball since the NCAA Tournament started in 1948.
St. Francis, Brooklyn is the first team to win the tournament championship by way of three road victories, and just the second team to claim the title despite having a losing overall record. They are the 10th team to enter the NCAAs with a losing
record.
Sarah Benedetti led the Terriers with 29 points, including five 3-pointers. Jaymee Veney and Eilidh Simpson added 14
points each.
The fifth-seeded Terriers defeated No. 4 seed Sacred Heart then top-seeded Central Connecticut in double-overtime of the
semifinal game before finishing off No. 3 seed Robert Morris.
“I’ve always loved the underdog story and I think this is the definition of a pure underdog,” Benedetti said. “It just feels
awesome.”
Junior Ashley Ravelli led the Colonials with 17 points. Sophomore point guard Anna-Niki Stamalamprou had 12 points but
only three in the second half after injuring her left knee.
Robert Morris (17-15) was vying for its second consecutive tournament championship and fourth since 2007. The Colonials, who defeated the Terriers in both meetings this year, are now 15-2 all-time in NEC Tournament home games.
Trailing 32-29 at halftime, the Colonials tied it on a free throw from Mikalah Mulrain, 38-38, with 14:47 to go. After Simpson hit a pair of shots from the line to regain the lead for the Terriers, Ravelli hit a jump shot to make it 40-40.
From that point on, the Terriers dominated.
Benedetti made a pair of buckets, including one or her five from beyond the arc, and Veney made a jump shot and with
12:32 to go, St. Francis held a 47-40 lead. Janee Brown made a free throw to cut the lead to six, but the Colonials would get
no closer.
With just under seven minutes remaining the Terriers lead, 62-44. A pair of 3-pointers from Stamalamprou and Ravelli
helped the Colonials to chip away at the lead and Ravelli hit a jump shot to make it 64-54 with 4:31 left, but Simpson made
a 3-point shot and the Terriers would keep their double-figure lead the rest of the game.
“Robert Morris is an amazing team and they have great leaders in Anna-Niki and Ashley Ravelli,” Veney said. “They’re
always in it. For us to win like this on the road against some pretty good players is phenomenal.”
Robert Morris coach Sal Buscaglia felt that despite the Terriers’ lack of experience in the postseason, having four seniors
and one junior in the starting lineup helped when the game was at its most critical moments.
“They’re a senior-laden team and the one fear I had was that we’re a young team,” said Buscaglia, who became the alltime NEC Tournament wins leader (17) when the Colonials defeated No. 2 seed Bryant on the road in the semifinals. “We
only have one junior who starts. I’m so very proud of the kids on our team to go this far with one junior who plays a lot of
minutes and the rest freshmen and sophomores. To get to the championship game and fall just short to a team that was
red-hot and playing at their best level makes me very proud.”
Women’s basketball: St. Francis upsets Robert Morris, 77-62
By Megan Ryan / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Robert Morris could only do so much to overcome a team that no one else has been able to stop this postseason.
Despite back-to-back Northeast Conference championships on the line as well as their fourth in nine years, the Colonials
(17-15) couldn’t detour St. Francis (N.Y.)’s path to its first title, losing, 77-62, Sunday at Sewall Center.
As the No. 5 seed, St. Francis (15-18) upset the No. 2 seed away in the penultimate game of the regular season and then
the No. 4 seed, No. 1 seed and No.3 seed Robert Morris all on the road in the tournament to capture its unlikely first bid to
the NCAA tournament. And for a team laden with seniors, it was a long time coming.
“I’ve always loved the underdog story,” Terriers senior forward Sarah Benedetti said. “And I think this is a great definition
of a pure underdog. And it just feels awesome.”
Benedetti scored a game-high 29 points, going 5 for 6 on 3-pointers, 9 for 16 from the field and 6 for 7 on free throws.
Overall, the team was unbeatable at the 3-point line, shooting 59 percent overall, including 78 percent in the second half,
to build up an 18-point lead at one point in the second half.
“She shot the ball really well, and she was shooting way out of the 3-point line,” Colonials junior guard Ashley Ravelli said.
“We should have focused a little bit more on her, for sure.”
Ravelli led her team with 17 points, but leading scorer Anna Niki Stamolamprou was limited Sunday, curbing what Robert
Morris could accomplish.
The sophomore guard landed wrong coming down from a shot early in the second half. And while she eventually returned
to the game with her left knee taped and having tried two different braces to stabilize her leg, her performance wasn’t up
to par with just 12 points — shy of her average of more than 15 per game.
The adversity wasn’t something Robert Morris could brush off.
“That was one of the worst things that could happen to us because she’s the girl that we go to,” coach Sal Buscaglia said.
“When she went down, a lot of the focus was looking at her … [instead of] who’s on the court.”
Buscaglia said doctors examined Stamolamprou after the game, and they hoped it was just a sprained meniscus.
Experience played a big part in St. Francis’ win, but Robert Morris has much to look toward in the future with just one senior and two juniors on the roster. Ravelli said she didn’t cry after the hard loss because she was too busy thinking about
next season.
“I’m so very proud of the kids on our team to go this far … to the championship game and just fall short to a team that was
red-hot,” Buscaglia said. “We have an opportunity with all these young kids on the team to raise the trophy next year, and
certainly we’ll be there. I’m very confident in that.”
Lady Terriers ‘dancing’ with the stars, face UConn in first round
Cinderella SFC-Brooklyn to Visit Top Overall Seed Connecticut
By John Torenli, Sports Editor
Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Just call them Destiny’s Darlings.
Or the team that Brooklyn almost forgot.
Left for dead just over five weeks ago with a gruesome 7-17 overall record following a 61-43 loss at eventual
Northeast Conference regular-season champion Central Connecticut State on Feb. 9, the St. Francis Brooklyn
women’s basketball team suddenly stirred to life.
Only nobody seemed to notice.
Not even on Remsen Street.
The Lady Terriers (15-18), obscured by the ongoing success of the men’s team, which ultimately suffered a
devastating NEC Championship Game loss to Robert Morris at a sold-out Pope Center, went on an historic, and
completely unexpected run to become the Downtown Brooklyn school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament participant in basketball.
Following the loss to CCSU, SFC won five of its final six regular-season games, then somehow managed to post
an unprecedented three consecutive road wins in the NEC Tournament, culminating in Sunday’s 77-62 triumph
at Robert Morris.
The Terriers’ reward for beating the top three teams the NEC had to offer is a showdown with arguably the
greatest women’s basketball team of all-time.
SFC will take on none other than top-ranked and top overall seed Connecticut (32-1) on Saturday night at 9
p.m. in a contest that will air nationally on ESPN2.
And to think, just last month the Terriers weren’t even sure they would reach the quarterfinal round of their
own conference tournament, much less play against a team vying for its third consecutive national championship in women’s basketball.
“It is a great feeling,” SFC senior Sarah Benedetti gushed after earning NEC Tournament MVP following a
29-point effort in Sunday’s title game.
“I always loved being the underdog and this is the true underdog story,” she added. “It feels amazing. We have
never been in this situation before, but our experience with our four seniors and one junior really builds our
team chemistry and that helps us when we had to make big shots to win the game.”
“To have a team in the NCAA and another team make the finals, it is like us with two teams to make the championship game, your name is out there with some elite programs,” Terriers head coach John Thurston noted.
There isn’t any program as elite as UConn, which doesn’t bode well for the Terriers, who still are three wins shy
of a .500 record.
But irregardless of Saturday night’s outcome, experienced players like Eilidh Simpson, Jaymee Veney, Leah
Fuchko and Benedetti will now walk together forever as champions and pioneers, becoming the first group
ever from the diminutive Franciscan school to cut down the nets and go dancing during March Madness.
“So many other people at St. Francis Brooklyn, who have been there for years and have not been able to see a
championship, we are grateful to bring them this trophy,” Thurston said.

Fifth-seeded St. Francis College of Brooklyn went long and upset defending champion Robert Morris
University, 77-62, to capture the Northeast Conference women’s basketball championship on Sunday.
Unlike the men’s team which lost to Robert Morris in the NEC final on Tuesday, the Terrier women will
be making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament, the league’s first fifth seed to win the tourney.
“It’s eerie how it keeps happening,” said SFC head coach John Thurston, whose squad played a close
first half and then blew out the Colonials with a barrage of three-pointers after intermission.
“We play evenly in the opening half and then get going in the second half.
“We have great shooters, they’ve worked at it. The three is a tremendous weapon.”
The (15-18) Terriers made 10 of 17 trey attempts and outscored the three seeds, 45-33, in the second
half.
SFC, which upended top seed Central Connecticut in double overtime on Wednesday, got another
stellar trey performance from Sarah Benedetti, one of five seniors.
The Canton, Conn. native scored a season-high 29 points and made 5 of 6 threes.
UConn’s Opponent: St. Francis Brooklyn
Hartford Courant
Record: 15-18 overall, 9-9 in Northeast Conference. Fifth seed in the NEC Tournament.
Coach: John Thurston, third season, 45-48
Tournament history: This is the first NCAA Tournament appearance for the Terriers
Top players to watch: Sarah Benedetti, a 5-10 senior forward, was a four-time NCCC All-Conference
player and three-time Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State selection at Canton
High. She was the 2010 NCCC Player of the Year after averaging 21.5 points and 15 rebounds and is
the second-leading scorer in school history with 1,653 points. She owns the single-game scoring record with 44 points. Averaging 14.2 this season, she was the most valuable player of the NEC Tournament, scoring 29 points in the championship game win over Robert Morris. Eilidh Simpson (12.0) and
Jaymee Veney (14.8) both had 14 points with five rebounds in the title game.
Of note: St. Francis has won eight of its past nine, including three playoff games, with seven coming
by 10 or more points.
The Terriers had to win road games at Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut and Robert Morris to win the
tournament title. Central came into the NEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. …
Thurston, selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1966 MLB June amateur draft, was appointed a
member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee, which he will serve on until 2018.
