Meanwhile, still unsure about Chris Gayle’s fitness, the West Indies will have to overcome their erratic play to have any chance against underdogs-turnedfavourites New Zealand in the fourth quarterfinal of the ICC Cricket World Cup here tomorrow. Both teams have taken contrasting routes to reach the last eight stage with New Zealand winning all their six pool games and West Indies scraping through as the fourth placed team from Group B. Elsehwre, refusing to rate his match-winning ton against Bangladesh in the quarter-final, Indian top-order batsman Rohit Sharma said the ongoing cricket World Cup campaign is a very prestigious stage and he wants to make the most of it. Opener Rohit’s calculated 137 off 126 deliveries helped India outplay Bangladesh by 109 runs to book their semi-final spot and the innings is certainly special for the Mumbaibatsman. Udangudi project will start soon: Minister Cong pot boils hot NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 20: State Electricity Minister Natham R Viswanathan today said work on Udangudi power project wlll commence soon. Refuting DMK president M Karunanidhi’s charges that the project was dropped with ulterior motives, he said it was only the former Chief Minister who cheated Tamilnadu on various fronts. In a detailed rejoinder to a recent statement by Karunanidhi, the Minister said tender bids for a port to handle lignite for Udangudi project were opened on 19 March and work will start soon. ‘Bids will soon be invited for Udangudi Stage-1 and finalised,’ he said. Stating that just 206 MW electricity capacity was added to the State grid during the five year regime of the DMK, Viswanathan said AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa took steps to get 4,640 MW power. ‘Only because of the efforts of Jayalalithaa, there is no power cut for households in the State,’ he said. q Chidambaram’s meeting triggers fresh furore q Kushboo expected to get plum post Reliance to take over Sun TV? Chennai, Mar 20: The buzz in the corporate/media circles is that Sun TV may be taken over by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group. What lends credence to the market rumours is that the Marans, who own the Sun TV group, are down in the dumps thanks to the Aircel-Maxis and 2G scandals. Kalanidhi Maran also faced another setback in January when the board of directors of SpiceJet transferred control of the airline to Ajay Singh, the founder of SpiceJet, after a string of loss-making quarters. On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani has very keen interest in media --- backed by its US based partner Viacom Inc, his group not long ago took over Network 18 group, Mukesh Ambani also has a controlling stake in Eenadu TV media group (ETV). Though the deal is far from being sealed, Tehelka in its online publication has reported top officials of the RIL are in the city and are holding discussions to work out the modalities of the deal. It is also claimed that the two groups have been in talks since early January. NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 20: Congress and chaos are like two sides of the same coin, and it’s doubly so in Tamilnadu. The latest is due to a meeting to be presided over by senior leader P Chidambaram in Karaikudi tomorrow, arrangements for which are being made ‘without the knowledge of EVKS Elangovan’, the State Congress president. ‘I have no information. Usually, TNCC chief will be informed. I will have to see what it is’ was Elangovan’s reaction, when asked about the meeting. All is already not well between Elangovan and Chidambaram camps after a recent war of words between the TNCC president and the latter’s ‘I have no information. Usually, TNCC chief will be informed. I will have to see what it is’ was Elangovan’s reaction, when asked about the meeting’ son Karti P Chidambaram, the enfant terrible of the party. In fact, it all started with a ‘supporters meeting’ convened by Karti (but he termed it as a friends gathering) and his comments there, which drew criticism from Elangovan and a notice from TNCC. What followed were charges and counter-charges, with Karti stating that the TNCC did not have powers to Lingaa distributors withdraw protest NT Bureau Chennai, Mar 20: It is all over. Within 24 hours of announcing a begging bowl protest outside Rajinikanth’s Poes Garden residence, distributors of Lingaa have agreed to the ‘compensation package’ of Rs.10 crore offered by the the film’s producer Rockline Venkatesh. Apparently satisfied at the settlement, brought out in the presence of Tamil Film Producers (TFPC) yesterday, the hitherto miffed distributors, who were led by Marina Pictures’ Singaravelan, today announced withdrawal of all forms of protests against Lingaa. According to sources, after the distributors threatened to hold the protest Rockline Venkatesh spoke to TFPC president Kalaipuli Thanu and reportedly handed over the amount This has brought to end the 100-day bitter battle that has been going on ever since Lingaa was released. ‘There was some discussion on how to share the money, but we finally managed to reach an agreement. He (Thanu) showed us the cheque and assured us that the promised amount had been given. Since we have lost a lot of time and money already, we agreed to the offer and have withdrawn the protest,’ Singaravelan, who distributed the movie in Tirunelveli, said. After Lingaa was declared a loss in late December, distributors and producers have been agitating and demanding compensation for their losses. Part of the delay over accepting the offered compensation was due to the fact theatre-owners and distributors had been fighting about how much share each of them will get. Finally, it has been decided that Rs 6.5 crore will go to the theatre-owners and Rs 3.5 crore will be given to the distributors, say sources. A press note from TFPC late last night announced all issues were sorted out and it also thanked actor Rajinikanth for his co-operation. question him, since he was a member of the AICC. New Delhi, Mar 20: On the last day of the first leg of Parliament session, the government successfully got the Mines and Minerals Bill passed in Rajya Sabha on Friday. Rejecting the demand of the Opposition parties, Rajya Sabha refused to allow the motion to send the Mines Bill to the select committee. The Bill will now be sent to the Lok Sabha for consideration. Trinamool Congress, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Biju Janata Dal (BJD) voted for Mines Bill in the upper House of Parliament. Only the Congress and Left opposed the passage of the Bill. The Opposition had on Thursday forced deferment of consideration of the contentious Mines and Minerals Bill in Rajya Sabha arguing that mineralbearing states had not been consulted. The House saw four adjournments of brief spells in quick succession after members from Congress and Left, opposing taking up of discussion on Mines and Minerals Bill, created uproar. EYE FOR AN EYE Hazlegood for Australia Adelaide, Mar 20 (PTI): Josh Hazlewood stood out with a four-wicket haul as Australia’s disciplined bowlers strangled Pakistan with a thoroughly commanding performance, skittling them out for 213 in the third quarterfinal of the ICC Cricket World Cup here today. Electing to bat after winning the toss, Pakistan were stifled for runs by the Aussie bowlers and folded without putting up much of a fight in 49.5 overs. Josh Hazlewood (4/35) and Mitchell Starc (2/40) kept it tight to begin with before Mitchell Johnson (1/42) intimidated the Pakistanis with his ferocious pace. The pressure exerted early on brought the desired result quite quickly as the in-form Sarfraz Ahmed (10) departed after trying to find his rhythm for 16 deliveries. The opener struck one four before edging a tough grab to Shane Watson in the slip region. Sarfraz’s opening partner Ahmed position in the party in Tamilnadu. It is learnt that Elangovan has complained to the party high command about the meet and sought its attention towards it, as it is being conducted without his knowledge. Meanwhile, actress Kushboo, who enrolled herself in the Congress recently, is expected to be made the State women’s wing chief of the party. According to sourcess, the tenure of the present women’s wing president Sailakshmi will expire soon and she is expected tol be replaced by the actress-turned-politician, who earlier served the DMK. ‘Kushboo has been working hard to expand the support base of Congress in Tamilnadu. So she will be rewarded with the post,’ sources said. Rajya Sabha passes Mines and Minerals Bill Interestingly, the veteran had earlier been saved by the bail which did not come off despite Hazlewood breaching his defences to hit the stumps. The procession back to the pavillion continued when Umar Akmal (20 off 25 balls) was caught by Finch off Maxwell again. Five down for 126 in less than 30 overs, Pakistan looked in deep trouble when Shahid Afridi raised hopes with some early power-hitting. However, the temperamental all-rounder also went back to pavillion after playing one of his now trademark cameos, which entertained while it lasted but did not help the team’s cause much. Afridi was dismissed while trying to smack Hazlewood out of the park, holing out to Aaron Finch after adding 23 runs that came off 15 deliveries and included three fours and a lofty six off Johnson. Kiwis ready for ‘Gayle’ storm Wellington, Mar 20 (PTI) : Still unsure about Chris Gayle’s fitness, the West Indies will have to overcome their erratic play to have any chance against underdogsturned-favourites New Zealand in the fourth quarterfinal of the ICC Cricket World Cup here tomorrow. Both teams have taken contrasting routes to reach the last eight stage with New Zealand winning all their six pool games and West Indies scraping through as the fourth placed team from Group B. Though dispelling the notion that West Indies were overtly dependant on Gayle, Holder said any team would love to have the left-hander on board. Well, obviously Chris’s stats speak for themselves. He is one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket. So to have Chris on the squad is a plus for anybody. Despite several letters to mayor and other offi cials of the Corporation no action was taken to appoint new workers to attend to the work. At one point senior citizens had even taken the task of cleaning the park on themselves. The park has finally seen the light of the day. The Corporation authorities have responded to the complaints of residents regarding the maintenance of the park and restored work on a regular basis. After a gap of four months the park has acquired a face lift with cleaning and watering having been resumed. Another work that has now started at Krishnapuri is the conversion of large volumes of dry leaves and fallen dry tree branches into ash which serves as a good nutrient for plants. The process also serves to reduce the quantity of garbage collected for disposal and thereby keeps the area clean. Dr H K Lakshman Rao, a resident of the area has taken the initiative to convert the dry leaves and wood materials to ash. ‘Daily large volumes of dry leaves and wood materials are getting collected at COC parks and homes. Disposing is a great challenge. If this waste is converted to manure it will help solve civic problems of garbage disposal. Dry leaves and wood can be either stored in a pit and allowed to decompose by sprinkling water or burnt for converting to ash as they are beneficial to plants as organic manure’, said Lakshman Rao. - NT Bureau 05:30 PM Kalai Koil 08:00 PM Deivam Thandha Veedu 06:00 PM Utchakattam 08:30 PM Saravanan Meenatchi 06:30 PM Idhu Pudhusu 09:00 PM Mahabharatham JAYA TV 07:00 PM News 09:30 PM Super Singer T20 04:30 PM Kollywood Gallery 07:30 PM Mohini 10:30 PM Office 05:00 PM New Songs 08:00 PM Bhavani 05:30 PM Makkalin Mudhalvar 08:30 PM Romapuri Paandiyan 11:00 PM Kalyanam Mudhal Kaadhal Varai 06:00 PM Suvaiyo Suvai 09:00 PM Odi Vilayadu Pappa 11:30 PM Movie 09:30 PM Madippakkam Madhavan RAJ TV 10:00 PM News Headlines 05:00 PM S K Shoppe 10:02 PM Kaliyugam 05:30 PM Pudhiya Paadal 10:30 PM Sirippu Varudhu 11:00 PM Kuthu Padalgal 10:00 PM Kavidhaiyae Theriyuma 10:30 PM English News 10:45 PM Tamil News 11:00 PM Thenkinnam SUN TV CRICKET 10:30 PM Late Cut 11:30 PM Telebuy 07:00 PM Sindhu Bhairavi 09:30 PM Vani Rani VIJAY TV 07:30 PM Mann Vasanai 11:00 PM Match Point : Quarter Final 3: Australia vs. Pakistan 06:00 PM England Tour of Sri Lanka 2014 H/ls : 6th ODI 10:00 PM Sakthi 04:30 PM Cricket Extra : Post Show 08:00 PM Karuthamma 10:30 PM Azhagi 06:00 PM En Kanavan En Thozhan 08:30 PM Alaipayuthey 11:00 PM Aahaa 06:30 PM Puthu Kavithai 09:00 PM En Iniya Thozhiye KALAIGNAR TV 07:00 PM Kalyanam Mudhal Kaadhal Varai 09:30 PM Gouravam 07:30 PM Aandaal Azhagar 10:30 PM Super Aunty 04:30 PM Sirippu Varudhu 03:00 PM Valli TEN 10:00 PM Cricket Live 09:00 PM Priyamanaval 09:30 PM Poomagal 10:00 PM WWE Smackdown 07:30 PM ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 H/ls : Quarter Final 3: Australia vs. Pakistan 06:30 PM Thirai Vaanil 08:30 PM Vamsam 09:00 PM Priyamana Thozhi 07:00 PM Cricket Legends 06:00 PM Raj News 08:00 PM Deiva Magal 08:30 PM Akka 09:00 PM UEFA Champions League 2014/15 H/ls 04:00 PM West Indies Tour of South Africa 2014/15 H/ls : 3rd Test 07:30 PM Nadhaswaram 08:00 PM Hits 08:00 PM ASP World Championship Tour 2014 09:00 PM Match Point : Quarter Final 3: Australia vs. Pakistan 07:00 PM News 07:30 PM News 06:00 PM ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 H/ls : Quarter Final 3: Australia vs. Pakistan 07:30 PM Gillette World Sport 08:30 PM Cricket Legends 06:30 PM Pasamalar 07:00 PM Ramayanam STAR SPORTS 1 04:30 PM Cricket Extra : Post Show 03:00 PM Cricket Classics : New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka: November `96 06:00 PM Mundhanai Mudichu 06:30 PM Galatta Comedy Authorities have responded to complaints of residents regarding the maintenance of the park 05:00 PM Vinnai Thodu 10:00 PM Koppium-Crime Time 03:30 PM Chinna Gounder IN THEATRES SONY PIX 06:55 PM The Expendables 2 Kamala Theatre, Udhayam Theatre, PVR Cinemas, 09:00 PM Ip Man 2 AGS Cinemas, INOX National, Abirami Mega Mall, 11:28 PM You Don’t Mess with the Zohan Woodlands Multiplex, Mayajaal Cinema, Sangam Multiplex, Sri Ganga Cinema, Raj Theatre, Maharani Theatre TEN SPORTS 03:00 PM Euroleague Basketball 2014/15 : Nizhny Novgorod vs. Anadolu Efes Istanbul HBO 09:00 PM South Africa Tour of Sri Lanka 2013 H/ls : 1st T20 07:00 PM French Ligue 1 2014/15 H/ls : Preview Show 10:00 PM West Indies Tour of England 2009 H/ls : 3rd S U D O K U 6 3022 11:16 PM The Hunger Games: MOVIES NOW PVR Cinemas, Sangam, AGS, INOX National, Hall, Rakki 06:30 PM The Matrix Reloaded Multiplex, Abirami Theatres, 09:00 PM Kung Fu Panda 10:55 PM Green Lantern KALAKATTAM STAR MOVIES Mayajaal, Escape Cinema, Devi Cineplex, Kamala Theatre, 06:33 PM xXx PVR Cinemas, Sangam, AGS, INOX National, Abirami 09:00 PM Thor 2: The Dark World Theatres, 11:14 PM The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor 8 5 2 9 9 2 5 8 1 2 8 8 5 2 The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once: Easy nah? Blend 4 FRIDAY 20 MARCH 2015 WHAT WH AT NEWS NEW NEW EWS S TODAY TODA TO DAY DA Y PRINTS PRIN PR INTS IN TS IS IS NEWS NEWS THAT THA THA HAT T COUNTS COUN CO UNTS UN TS P Loose canons rime Minister Narendra Modi intervened in the debate on the safety of women. In the Lok Sabha, Modi said he was ‘deeply concerned’ about the rape of a 72-year-old nun in West Bengal. A report on the incident has been sought from the State government. Also, he shared the members’ concern about the reported incidents of intimidation against the religious minorities, though some of them are overplayed in the media. Referring to the reported demolition of an under-construction church in Haryana, the PM said that the State government was directed to send a report. Members expressed outrage at the rape of the elderly nun in Ranaghat in Nadia district. When Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy was on its way to meet the victim of the gang rape, angry locals gheraoed her car, making it hard for her to move for nearly two hours. Typically, and stupidly, she blamed the CPI(M) and the BJP for the spontaneous gherao by students and women and threatened that her party could reply in kind. Eventually, the police managed to extricate her vehicle from the baying crowds. The CPI(M) members in the Lok Sabha were particularly harsh in condemning the Trinamool Congress Government for the deteriorating law and order in the state, which had further caused insecurity among the women. Members from most parties condemned the rape of the nun while the Trinamool Congress members sought to shift focus by referring to the reported demolition of the under-construction church in Haryana. Villagers in Hissar were quoted in the media to the effect that the construction of a church was unwarranted, since no Christian lived in and around their village. They alleged that the real motive of the person behind the construction was to convert Hindus to Christianity, a claim not denied by the man behind the proposed church. Regardless, the demolition of a small wall purportedly part of the proposed church made headline news. This is because of the alacrity with which critics of the Modi Government seize upon every small or not-so-small incident of real or perceived attack on minorities to berate it for being soft on the loony fringe in the Sangh Parivar. Since the fringe has taken to speaking out of turn and the Opposition has taken to blowing up out of all proportion even small incidents involving religious minorities. It is not as if such incidents did not take place earlier. They did. Now, sections of the media go out of the way to induce members of various affiliate bodies of the RSS to mouth some absurdities, so that it can embarrass the Prime Minister and bring a bad name to his government. Of course, Modi himself will have to crack the whip against the loose cannons in the Parivar and ensure that they do not play into the hands of the Opposition Raj Kundra @TheRajKundra I have realised its not easy...but if it was everyone would do it. I guess that’s why it’s called a Challenge. Believe you can and you will! New way to regenerate heart tissue found WASHINGTON: In a discovery that may pave the way for regeneration of damaged heart tissue, scientists have successfully stimulated the mouse heart to grow new cells. Researchers have shown that a subset of RNA molecules, called microRNAs, is important for cardiomyocyte cell proliferation during development and is sufficient to induce proliferation in cardiomyocytes in the adult heart. The team found that the loss of the microRNA cluster miR302-367 in mice led to decreased cardiomyocyte cell proliferation during development. In contrast, increased expression of the microRNA cluster in adult hearts led to a reactivation of proliferation in the normally non-reproducing adult cardiomyocytes. This reactivation occurred, in part, through repression of a pathway called Hippo that governs cell proliferation and organ size. ‘The Hippo pathway normally represses cell proliferation when it is turned on,’ said Ed Morrisey, from the University of Pennsylvania. ‘The cluster miR302-367 targets three of the major kinase components in the Hippo pathway, reducing pathway activity, which allows cardiomyocytes to re-enter the cell cycle and begin to regrow heart muscle. This is a case of repressing a repressor,’ said Morrisey. In adult mice, re-expression of the microRNA cluster reactivated the cell cycle in cardiomyocytes, resulting in reduced scar formation after an experimental myocardial infarction injury was induced in the mice. VOICE MAIL Save green Sir, Around the world, forests are being logged for timber and paper pulp and cleared to grow mono-crops like palm oil and soy while they are deteriorating from the impacts of global warming. Deforestation is a major driver of global warming, responsible for up to 20 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions more than all the cars, trucks, planes, boats and trains in the world combined. Deforestation doesn’t just threaten our climate, it threatens the livelihoods of 1.6 billion people that rely on forests for food and economic activity. Forests also serve as habitats to rare and undiscovered animal and plant species and play a key role in providing water and preventing flooding and erosion. The sanctions, imposed because of Russia’s alleged military intervention in Ukraine, are now linked to ‘complete implementation’ of a ceasefire deal. Last month’s deal envisages Ukraine regaining full control of its eastern border with Russia by the end of 2015. The sanctions target major firms and political figures close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. They are unable to get Western loans and their travel is restricted. Pressure on Russia. The sanctions decision was agreed at an EU summit in Brussels. ‘Our common intention is very clear - to maintain the sanctions until Minsk is fully implemented,’ European Council President Donald Tusk said at a news conference. He was referring to the ceasefire deal agreed in February in Belarus’ capital. Thursday’s move is designed to force Russia to put pressure on the heavily armed pro-Russian rebels occupying parts of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Massive volcano on the moon LONDON: Scientists have produced a new map of the Moon’s most unusual volcano showing that its explosive eruption 3.5 billion years ago spread debris over an area much greater than previously thought. A team of astronomers and geologists, led by experts at Durham University, UK, studied an area of the lunar surface in the Compton-Belkovich Volcanic Complex. By mapping the radioactive element thorium which spewed out during the eruption they discovered that, with the help of the Moon’s low gravity, debris from the unnamed volcano was able to cover an area the size of Scotland, or around 70,000 square kilometres. The eruption, which happened 3.5 billion years ago, threw rock five times further than the pyroclastic flow of molten rock and hot gases that buried the Roman city of Pompeii, the researchers added. The research used data from NASA’s Lunar Prospector spacecraft which first spotted the volcanic site in 1999 when it detected an isolated deposit of thorium on the Moon’s far-side between the Compton and Belkovich impact craters. Since its discovery, the deposit had been hard to study because it is hidden beneath debris from meteorite impacts, but Lunar Prospector did detect gamma rays emitted by the thorium that can pass through up to a metre of rock. Based on this information, the team used a ‘pixon’ image enhancement technique to sharpen the map and reveal the enormous size of the thorium deposit from the volcanic eruption. Lead author and Durham University PhD student Jack Wilson said he was surprised by the gigantic scale of the explosion. ‘Volcanoes were common in the early life of the Moon and in fact the dark ‘seas’ you can observe on the lunar surface were created by runny, iron-rich, lava that flooded large areas, filling in impact craters and low-lying ground,” said Wilson. More than 6,000 people have died since the fighting in eastern Ukraine erupted last April, the UN estimates The EU sanctions were imposed last July and were due to expire after a year. A formal decision to extend the measures must still be made, and is expected in the summer. Both Ukraine’s military and the rebels accuse each other of repeated shelling, but the fragile ceasefire agreed in Minsk, Belarus, is largely holding. More than 6,000 people have died since the fighting in eastern Ukraine erupted last April, the UN estimates. The Kiev government, Western leaders and Nato say there is clear evidence that Russia has helped the rebels with troops and heavy weapons. Russia denies that, insisting that any Russians on the rebel side are ‘volunteers’. The clashes began a month after Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern Crimea peninsula. In Brussels, the leaders also agreed to make gas contracts with Russia more transparent, to avoid pricing disputes which have bedevilled such contracts in the past. Many East European states in the EU rely heavily on Russian gas supplies. But the European Commission is investigating Russia’s Gazprom monopoly, suspecting it of overcharging for gas. Tusk said it was ‘unhelpful’ that most bilateral gas contracts with Russia were long-term, sometimes agreed for 20 years. That timescale gives Russia much leverage, and Tusk said gas must no longer be used as ‘a political weapon’. Ukraine is a key transit country for Russian gas deliveries to Europe, and previous price disputes have led to shortages, threatening the EU’s energy security. It is not yet clear how the EU Commission will monitor future gas deals with Russia, to check compliance with EU law. The leaders stressed that confidentiality must still be respected for commercial contracts. PARIS: Police have discovered the bodies of five babies in a house in southwestern France, a source close to the case said, in what appears to be the country’s worst incident of infanticide in five years. After the body of a newborn was found in a thermal bag earlier, officers ‘discovered four more bodies of babies during their search’ at the house in Louchats, near the city of Bordeaux, the source said, confirming a report by French television channel iTele. The source added that the four corpses were found in a freezer. The 40-year-old father was taken into custody while the 35-year-old mother was hospitalised, the source added. It was the father who initially found the bag containing the first corpse of a newborn baby early on Thursday at the family home, the source close to the investigation told AFP. The mother apparently ‘gave birth at home alone’, the source said, adding that she had been taken to a hospital in Bordeaux ‘for gynaecological and psychiatric examinations’. The woman ‘at this stage does not appear to have a history of mental illness’. The couple has two daughters aged 13 and 15. Freaky Friday q Solar eclipse, Spring Equinox & Supermoon all happening today WASHINGTON: Starting in the early morning hours this Friday, Earthlings are in for an incredible event as three celestial events happen all at once! Supermoon A Supermoon happens when a full or new moon occurs right when the moon is closest to the Earth (perigee) during its elliptical orbit. In other words, the moon will look ginormous on Friday, albeit very dark and faint. The moon will reach perigee on Friday, so keep your eyes on the sky for the giant silhouette! Spring Equinox The official start of spring, the vernal equinox, will be marked on Friday at 6:45 pm ET|5:45 pm CT when the Earth’s axis lines up perpendicularly to the sun’s rays -- marking one of the two equinoxes that occur each year. It is often said that you can balance a raw egg perfectly on its end during an equinox, though this widely accepted to be just a myth. Solar Eclipse A solar eclipse -- where the the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth -- will block out most of the sunlight during the event, casting a massive shadow upon the Earth. Sadly, the eclipse will not be visible to anyone in the United States, as it will happen around 4:30 am ET|3:30 am CT over Europe. However, if you’re willing to wake that early, and get to your computer, you can watch the live stream at Slooh’s online observatory. NASA predicts the “instant of greatest eclipse” will happen around 5:45 am ET|4:45 a.m. CT. In two years, though, the US will enjoy the best seats aboard spaceship Earth for the solar eclipse on 21 August 2017, according to NASA. Thai former PM to face trial over rice scheme BANGKOK: Thailand’s former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was ordered to stand trial over her role in a controversial rice subsidy scheme that cost the country billions and could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Office ordered 47-year-old Yingluck, Thailand’s first woman premier, to be in court on 19 May to enter her plea in the case. The court announced that its panel of nine judges in charge of the case had considered the lawsuit and found that the court had the authority to try the case in line with procedures for trials against political office holders and that the suit was line with the Yingluck Shinawatra Supreme Court’s rules. ‘The panel (of judges) has decided that this case falls within our authority. We accept this case,’ Judge Viraphol Tangsuwan said. The court also appointed Tangsuwan, vice president of the Supreme Court, as the judge advocate in charge of the case. Yingluck was charged by public prosecutors with having violated the Criminal Code and the Anti-Corruption Act in the rice-pledging case. She is not accused of corruption herself but of failing to prevent alleged graft in the programme. Thailand’s attorney general filed criminal charges against Yingluck in February, accusing her of ‘dereliction of duty’ over the populist but loss making rice scheme. Yingluck did not attend the Bangkok court today but will be legally obliged to attend the first hearing in May. In a statement on her Facebook page published shortly after the ruling, she defended the controversial scheme as one which ‘lifted the quality of life for rice farmers’. The decision to prosecute Yingluck is likely to deepen the long-running political crisis in the military-ruled nation. Yingluck is the younger sister of fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra who is on a self-imposed exile in Dubai after his ouster in a coup in 2006. Thaksin’s influence is still there in Thai politics. The decision could spell the end of her family’s political dominance. The rice subsidy programme, introduced in 2011, pledged to pay farmers well above the market rate for their crop. Apple to ‘watch’ out for competition q Tag Heuer, Google & Intel team up Basel, Mar 20 (AFP): Luxury Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer announced on Thursday it was joining forces with technology behemoths Google and Intel to develop a smartwatch that can compete with the new Apple Watch. The timepiece, which aims to combine Swiss watchmaking knowhow with high-end technology, is expected to hit stores by the end of the year, Tag Heuer chief JeanClaude Biver told the Baselworld watch fair. ‘Silicon Valley and Switzerland are going to conquer the market of the connected watch’, he told a press conference at the world’s largest trade show for timepieces, in the northern Swiss city of Basel. Biver, an industry legend who also leads the watch division of Tag Heuer’s owners LVMH, did not reveal how much the watch would cost or which functions it would have. ‘We don’t want the competition to know what we are going to do. We want them to be surprised’, he said. In a statement, the three companies said their partnership ‘signifies a new era of collaboration between Swiss watchmakers and Silicon Valley, bringing together each company’s respective expertise in luxury watchmaking, software and hardware’. David Singleton, head of engineering for Android Wear at Google, said the company was ‘thrilled’ with the project, telling the news conference the companies were ready to ‘forge a new evolution for the luxury watch of the future’. Arunachalam Date : 19.03.2015 Company Secretary 6 FRIDAY 20 MARCH 2015 Sports CHENNAI ‘Give Indian bowlers due credit’ Former cricket legends hail Dhoni’s captaincy Melbourne, Mar 20 (PTI): Impressed with the excellent bowling show by the Indian team so far, former captain Sunil Gavaskar said that the bowlers have combined well as a unit to pick all the opposition wickets in the seven wins on the trot in the ongoing cricket World Cup. India, who thrashed Bangladesh in the quarter-finals here today, are well on course to defend their title as the bowling attack led by Mohammed Shami -- highest wicket-taker (17 scalps in six games) in the tournament so far -- has managed to bundle out the opposition in all the games, and Gavaskar is impressed with the show by the bowlers. ‘They are combining well as a bowling unit. The seam bowlers are keeping the pressure on, somebody is getting you early wickets and then there is no leakage of runs. Sometimes the first-change bowlers comes and he leaks a lot of runs, that hasn’t happened. The spinners have kept it tight as well. So all told, the bowling unit has been very impressive,’ Gavaskar said after India’s 109run win against Bangladesh. ‘They have dismissed have every single team they have played against and I think what more can a captain ask for. He gets into a position where he really doesn’t have to worry too much Mortaza fined, suspended Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortoza’s World Cup woes continued even after the team’s quarter-final exit as the medium-pacer was handed a one-match suspension and slapped with a fine for his team’s slow over-rate. Mortaza, whose team was found guilty of bowling two overs short in the stipulated time to complete their quota of 50 overs against India, was found to repeat the offence twice after being fined in the England game for a minor over-rate offence. USA redrawn with Brazil in Sudirman Cup Kuala Lumpur, Mar 20 (PTI): Badminton World Federation (BWF) had to redraw Group 2 for the prestigious Sudirman Cup due to a discrepancy in the team rankings. The redraw was necessitated after it was confirmed that points from a player ineligible for representation were included in the USA team ranking. Singapore, Netherlands, Canada and Spain are now in Group 2A while Hong Kong, USA, France and Brazil are in Group 2B, following today’s redraw at BWF’s Office, BWF said in a release. The player is under USA’s jurisdiction (GCR 9) but cannot represent that country as per the requirements of GCR 8 International Representation. On recalculation of their team points, the USA were ranked 16th, therefore in Group 2 and not in Group 1. Russia became the 12th team and part of Group 1 for the World Mixed Team Championships. It was therefore decided that: Russia would be promoted to take USA’s place in Group 1B (with Japan and Chinese Taipei), Group 2 would be redrawn as there were changes in the seeding order (Russia having previously been ranked 13th while the USA, who replaced them in Group 2, are ranked 16th). There is no change to Group 1, Groups 3 and 4. BWF Referee Assessor, Chua Soo Hock (above), witnessed and signed off the redraw. The Vivo BWF Sudirman Cup is scheduled to take place from May 10 to 17 at the Nissan Sports Center in Dongguan, China, with 35 countries competing. Patience was the key: Rohit Rohit Sharma Melbourne, Mar 20: pener Rohit Sharma reached a century off 108 balls to revive India's innings in the World Cup quarter-final against Bangladesh at the Melbourne Cricket Ground o n Thursday. The defending champions went on to win the match by 109 runs and book a spot in the semis. The huge contingent of Indian supporters in the crowd cheered Rohit as he reached his seventh ODI ton with 10 fours and a six. He finally scored 137 off 126 balls to help India post a commendable 302/6.(LIVE Scorecard) However, Rohit had a lucky escape o n 90 when he holed out and w a s caught at deep midwicket off Rubel Hossain but umpire Ian Gould signalled a no-ball for a waist-high ball despite TV replays indicating it to be a legitimate delivery. After his innings, an elated Rohit Sharma said, 'It was a Peeved BCB to take up Rohit ‘no-ball’ with ICC Melbourne, Mar 20 (PTI): Outraged by the umpiring in Bangladesh’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to India here, the country’s Cricke t Board is all set to lodge a protest in the ICC and has got the backing of the governing body’s President AHM Mustafa Kamal, who said the on-field offici- ating was very poor’. Bangladesh were handed a 109run thrashing by India in the quarterfinal match here. The only dramatic moment in what was otherwise a Rohit Sharma clinical Indian performance was when centurion Rohit Sharma got a close no-ball reprieve. Rohit was on an individual score of 90 and team total on 196 in the 40th over bowled by Rubel Hossain when a marginal ‘no- ball’ call went in favour of the Indian opener. Rohit went onto add another 47 runs in quick time to help India go past 300-run mark. Ian Gould was the umpire who adjudged Rubel’s full-toss as waist high ‘no-ball’ with Rohit being holed out at deep mid-wicket boundary. However, TV replays showed that it was a real touch-and-go situation which could have gone either way. BCB said it will protest the umpiring in its report to the ICC. ‘Naturally we will appeal against these decision in our report. It won’t change the result, unfortunately. One wrong decision can make a huge difference in a World Cup quarter-final, BCB president Nazmul Hassan was quoted as saying by ‘ESPNCricinfo’. Djokovic reaches Indian Wells semis Indian Wells, Mar 20: Novak Djokovic didn’t have to hit a ball to get into the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday when opponent Bernard Tomic withdrew because of a back injury. Tomic’s withdrawal was announced about five hours before he was to play the top-ranked Djokovic, a three-time champion at Indian Wells who won his first three matches in straight sets. He had beaten Tomic each of the three times they’ve played. Fans on stadium court jeered the news. Djokovic’s semifinal opponent on Saturday will be fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who defeated No. 12 seed Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 for his 497th career victory. His wins are the most by any Brit in the Open era, overtaking Tim Henman who had 496 career wins.Murray dropped serve just once against the left-handed Lopez while serving for the match at 5-2 in the second set. He improved to 10-0 against Lopez all-time. ‘Every time he came to net I about one bowler getting hammered because that can happen in a one-day situation,’ he added. Gavaskar also praised Dhoni’s hanling of his regular and non-regular bowling options. What Dhoni is doing is that he is using Suresh Raina very cleverly. He is bringing him in on if (Ravindra) Jadeja or (Ravinchandran) Ashwin go for a few runs in their first couple of overs till they settle down and then Raina comes in and bowls 3-4 quick overs and sometimes more than that, picks up a wicket, keeps it tight and then Dhoni can go back to the spinners and get them to bowl well,’ he said. made it very difficult for him,’ Murray said. ‘I passed very well, and that was important, because it meant that he spent more time at the back of the court. When we were in the baseline Novak Djokovic rallies, I felt like I was able to dictate a lot of those points.’ Djokovic owns a 16-8 edge over Murray. They haven’t met since the 2013 Wimbledon final, won by Murray. ‘He will be totally fresh as well and ready for the semis, so it will be a tough one for me,’ Murray said. ‘But I feel like I played well this week and if I can keep that level up and for a sustained period on Saturday, I’ll have a chance.’ On the women’s side, Jelena Jankovic reached the semifinals when qualifier Lesia Tsurenko retired in the second set with a foot injury. Jankovic, the 2010 champion, was only on court for 46 minutes when Tsurenko called it quits trailing the Serb 6-1, 4-1. big game for us. We wanted to make it count. Glad we were able to eventually post a big total.' Talking about his restrained approach in the middle of the Indian innings, Rohit said, 'It was important for me to stay, especially knowing we lost a couple of wickets in the middle. Before we started we knew it was going to be slow and low. We just wanted to take our time and play our game. I knew if I stayed till the 30th-35th over, then we could make a big score.' Sharma though, unleashed himself once he went past his hundred. All the shots I played today, I liked it. After the rain the ball started to come on nicely. I think it's a decent total, said Rohit. However, he said that India weren't underestimating the Bangladeshi batsmen. 'We know we can't underestimate the Bangladeshi batsmen. Humpy, Harika excel Sochi, Mar 20 (PTI): Indian Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika made it to the last-32, winning the second game of the first round of the world women’s chess championship, here. Maintaining a clean slate, Humpy was a class act against Ayah Moaatz of Egypt in the second game of the mini-match and cruised through in a mere 28 moves to proceed to the next round without much ado. After a difficult first game, all eyes were on Harika, the semi-finalist in the previous knockout world championship but she too did her best with white pieces in the return game to send Tatev Abrahamyan of United States packing. The other Indian in the fray Mary Ann Gomes lived up to her reputation and forced Tatiana Kosintseva in the tiebreaker after drawing her second game on the trot against the highly regarded Russian. Mary Ann will now play two sets of Rapid games and in case of a tied result there too, will play more games of shorter duration till a result is achieved. The Marathi speaking people have struggled for the city and they won this struggle. These people are firmly standing behind the Shiv Sena,’ an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said. ‘Thus, it is simple to comprehend that the city will belong to those behind whom the people firmly stand,’ it said. Mumbai belonged to the Sena even when it didn’t have a single elected representative in the city, it pointed out. The Shiv Sena presently has 14 MLAs and BJP 15 legislators out of 36 Assembly seats in Greater Mumbai. ‘If there was no Shiv Sena in Mumbai, the city would have been placed under the Centre’s rule. Even our political opponents will agree to this,’ the editorial further said. Regd. Off: HDFC Bank Hosue, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel, Mumbai-400 013. QUARTERFINAL IV New Zealand vs West Indies at Wellington 6.30 a.m (IST) Dropping me was a mistake: Cook ABU DHABI: Discharged England captain Alastair Cook said his country’s early exit from the World Cup was proof that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was wrong to sack him as oneday captain just months from the quadrennial tournament. Speaking in Abu Dhabi ahead of the Emirates T20 tournament this week, Cook said: I can’t speak about what’s gone on there in depth, but you always back yourself, and I would have loved to have had the opportunity that was taken away from me. ‘The selectors made that decision because they thought it was the best for English cricket. Hindsight has probably proved them wrong, but now it’s very easy to say that, Cook was quoted as saying by cricket. com.au. Picture in picture Left-handed batsman Eoin Morgan had replaced Cook in December last year, less than two months before England’s World Cup opener against Australia at the MCG, which they lost by 111 runs. England went on to suffer heavy losses to New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to finish fifth in Pool A and miss the quarter-finals. The decision to sack Cook came after England had won just nine of 25 ODIs in 2014 and the opener suffered a drop in form with the bat. He had surpassed 50 just once in 22 matches before he was axed. Speaking on another England cricketer who was sacked from the side, Kevin Pietersen, the 30-year-old said it was very unlikely that Pietersen would make a comeback to international cricket for England. Alastair Cook Vethu Vettu (Vethu Vettu) Action unlimited (Thillagar) M D (Kallapadam) irector Vadivel has come out with a movie titled Kallapadam, which speaks about four young members who aspire to make a movie. Vadivel, K, Sriram, Gaughin, Lakshmi Priya, Singam Puli among others in the cast. The movie is a story of four young technicians in the film industry editor, director, music director and a cinematographer coming together to make one film. They go hammer and tongs to get a break in the industry. As usual they are plagued by one too many problems. One hurdle comes after another. Eventually they come up champs against all odds. Interestingly there are some references to koothu artistes too in the film. The movie has its moments and Vadivel has taken the lighter vein route to narrate the happenings, which gels well with the script. K is a surprise package and his performance is good. The rest of the cast are adequate. Interestingly many films were made on travails of youngsters to make it big in cinema, thankfully Kallapadam stands out from them. A refreshingly different film, thanks to shrewd screenplay. — M BHARAT KUMAR ore in the shades of Devar Magan, Thilagar speaks about revenge in a community in rural Tamilnadu and what it takes to stand against violence.
