The Madison Navy League invites you to our End of Winter Layup (ice is out) Celebration March 26, 2015 In waterfront towns around the Great Lakes and along our great western rivers, mariners celebrate the end of winter layup season when our waterways are once again ice-free and sailors return to the sea (or fresh water). Join Madison Navy League for as we honor this fine maritime tradition. Lake Mendota historian Don Sanford will present a brief history of the timehonored method for determining when, exactly, Lake Mendota is “open” for navigation. (Yes, there is science behind this). Bring your best maritime pictures of “Iced Up Ships, Vessels and Boats” and win a prize! We’ll close with a ceremony conducted by Captain Richard Baker, asking the all-powerful King Neptune, ruler of the depths, for a safe navigation season.
