Voters lists on internet
Check your name sitting at home;
e-governance comes home
By Vijay Bhor
CBD-BELAPUR: Navi
Mumbai Municipal
Corporation, which
published the
voters lists only
two days ago, has
now put them on
the website. In
fact, it has
opened a separate
website
www.nmmc
election.org for
the purpose.
The website carries
not only the complete
voters’ lists but also
complete details of the
newly formed wards with their
contours. It also carries the map
where one can see the Wards
marked out, reservation for
various types,
details about the
polling centers
and other details.
In fact, the voters
can check if their
names and
addresses have
been written
properly. Any
objections and
request for corrections/additions
should be made to the authorities
on or before 23 March, 2015.
This is the first time the
authorities have tried to introduce
e-governance into election exercise.
It is convenient to the people as
well as the authorities. It is hoped
that people will welcome it.
CIDCO allocates ` 1.5 cr for
Samaj Mandir in Selghar
Alooramji, both of us
have similar ambition.
You want to be Prime
Minister while I want
to be Crime Minister.
There is no difference
between the two!
By Umesh Parida
SELGHAR: The City
and Industrial Development Corporation has
allocated Rs 1.5 cr to
construct a Samaj
Mandir for the Selghar
residents. The villagers
appreciated the efforts
of Congress leader and
INTUC state leader
Mahendra Gharat for
his continuous efforts.
The villages Selghar, Kopar, Gavan,
Belpada, Shivaji Nagar
under Gavan grampanchayat have been approved with type plan
Samaj Mandir. Out of
the above, the first such
Samaj Mandir will
come up in Selghar.
Soon the bhoomi pujan
Mahendra Gharat
program will be held in
the Selghar village for
the Samaj Mandir’s
construction work.
The program also
coincides with the 90
year celebration of
Joma N Gharat who
was the firm supporter
of Janardan Bhagat.
CMYK
The CIDCO MD Sanjay
Bhatia will also be
present for the program. About 28 guntha
land has been given to
Selghar for various
public facilities.
The Selghar village
will also have school,
play ground, garden,
new cemetery, underground sewage line,
concrete blocks on road,
etc. About 30 ft wide
road will also be a part
of the Selghar development works. Such a
wide road has never
been found in any village. The Selghar pattern will be replicated
in 15 other villages,
hoped Mahndra Gharat.
NMMC could not give
scholarships to 717
students in 2013-14
By Umesh Parida
NAVI MUMBAI: The
civic body was not be
able to give 717 scholarships in 2013-2014.
However, the number
of applicants during
the year had reached
11161. The applications
were received by the
Social Welfare Department of the civic body. This
was revealed by
Navi Mumbai
Municipal Corporation.
According to
N M M C ,
10444+717 had
applied
for
scholarship to
the NMMC Social Welfare Department in
2013-14. Out of this
only 717 students had
applied in March 2014.
However, during the
said year funds were
not available. Hence
the 717 students had
not been granted scholarship.
The reply was given to corporator Rangnath K Auti who had
sought the details in a
question in general assembly. It seems that
lack of funding for providing scholarship to
the meritorious and
needy students was the
reason. NMMC’s reply
that there was non
availability of fund and
lack of awareness
about when to apply is
not convincing.
The civic body
should announce and
create awareness
about all such scholarship so that a large
number of needy beneficiaries apply in time.
This will enable them
to get the benefits in
time. The scholarship
will help the students
to avail education. This
is being widely opined
by many residents.

Party hopping continues
NCP, Congress continue to slide
By Vikram Gaikwad
VASHI: In the light
of NCP stalwart and
Navi Mumbai strong
man losing his seat in
the last assembly election and in view of the
imminent municipal
election to the cashrich Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation,
the aspirants, especially the sitting corporators have started looking for greener pastures. Most importantly, many of them deserted NCP and some,
Congress as they find
no future for these parties.
It all started with
one of the staunchest
supporters of Naik, M
K Madhvi from Airoli
announcing his exit
from NCP. He and his
wife, corporator Vinaya
Madhvi are believed to
have opened the flood
perkhairane, sitting
corporators Shivram
Patil and his wife Anita Patil were the next
to join the Sena.
In Nerul, long time
Congress worker Nam-
gates when they quit
NCP and joined Shiv
Sena. They were followed by another stalwart, Kishore Patkar
leaving NCP and joining the Sena. In Ko-
dev Bhagat and his
wife, corporator Indumati Bhagat also
changed their loyalty
and jointed the Sena.
Similarly, Sindhu
Naik and her husband,
Admissions of wards
under RTE granted 25%
reservation till 23rd March
By Chandrashekhar Hendve
NAVI MUMBAI: Students gaining admission
under the Right to Education Act, 2009 will
be granted 25% reservation. To apply for the
same parents of the
wards have to register
by 23rd of March.
Those parents who
have already registered
for the seats under the
RTE act have asked to
visit one of ten schools’
helpline centers to check
the details pertinent to
application of the student and verify the process of admission by retrieving the certificate
of admission.
To verify the admission certificate, parents
should visit one of the
civic schools – School
Sr.no 1 (Belapur),
School sr.no 14/15 (
Shiravane), School no.
20/21 Turbhe Gaon,
School no.31/32 ( Koparkairne, sec-7),
School no.38 (Koparkhairne, sector -2),
School no.42/43 ( Ghansoli), School no. 48
(Digha), School no. 54/
55 ( Katkaripada) as
well as Ikarwallah Education Academy, Sec14 of Vashi. These
schools will be available with helpline center for verification till
the deadline of 25 th
March. To know further details contact no
– 27546887/27550466
and mobile no. 98928
12192 / 99678 36191.
Education Committee
member Arvind Naik
also switched loyalties
and joined the Sena.
The latest to change
loyalty has been Sampat Shewale of Vashi.
He seems to be a victim of delimitation. His
ward has become a
part of the Ward represented by Bharat
Nakhate, another
Naik loyalist. Naturally, both of them will not
be nominated for the
coveted Ward. So, he
has found rehabilitation in BJP. Political
observers do expect
more desertions and
switch overs in the
days to come.

Corporator questions about
her right to participate in
preparing of the budget
By Umesh Parida
NAVI MUMBAI: A Sena
corporator questioned
the role of a member’s
participation in preparation of the budget
thereby raising a query in the Navi Mumbai
Municipal Corporation’s General Body.
The corporator Komal S Vaskar raised the
query whether a member has the right to participate in preparation
of the civic body budget
while citing the date of
completion of the term.
Not knowing the right
of an elected or nominated member reflects
her ignorance. She, despite having served a
full term, has yet to
know about the basic
rights of the elected representatives.
The NMMC chief in
his reply said that the
member is elected for
five years. He or she
will complete his or her
term as the civic body
term ends. The NMMC
administrative head
pointed out the various
provisions of law.
About budget preparation, the commissioner said that the
budgetary income and
expenditure is prepared
by the commission and
then it is presented in
the Standing Committee and the General
Body. The budget
should be approved before 31 March every
year by the General
Assembly.
The civic body also
pointed out that the
NMMC General Body
in March 1997 had approved to prepare annual urgent works and in
February 2010 had approved that the transport
undertaking
(NMMT) should prepare the annual budget
accordingly. Thus this
was the reply by
NMMC to the query
posed by the corporator.

Common scenario every month at Vashi
By Meena R Prashant
VASHI:
Flooded
streets with car wheels
submerged in drain
water have become a
common sight in
Sector 17, Vashi.
The residents allege that this has
become a common scenario every month on the
day of Amavasya
(New moon) as
the high tide water gushes into
the drain forcing
it to overflow and
enter the streets
emanating foul
smell and a spurt
in mosquito menace.
“It is sad to see
that every month
d u r i n g
Amavasya, the
storm
water
drain over flows
and the high tide
water gushes
out. This scenario lasts for at
least three days making it difficult to walk,”
says Seema Jadhav, a
resident of sector 17.
The residents allege
that despite consecutive problem since a
year and even after
bringing the issue to
the notice of the civic
body officials, no action
has been taken to sort
out the matter. “The
high tide water enters
the streets of sector 17.
After the water recedes
in about three to four
days there is scum and
foul smell. The roads
get slippery so walking
becomes a task. To park
vehicles and get out or
get in also becomes difficult. Kids play in the
accumulated water
which is a severe health
hazard. It is said that
due to the ongoing gutter work in neighboring
sector 16 the water is
entering in sector 17.
However this problem
is occurring since a
year. Officials of NMMC
have been notified about
the same but in vain”,
said Aruna Patil,
a resident of sector 17.
When contacted, the corporator of sector 17,
Sampath Shewale said, “During the period of
Amavasya, there
is high tide and
generally the
back water does
enter the city
drains. However,
due to the ongoing work of drain
near
St.
Lawrence School,
the valve of the
drain has been
closed due to
which the water
has gushed onto
the streets. This
water is generally let out in the
creek. With the
completion of the work
the problem will get
rectified on its own.
Nevertheless, I have
intimated the officials
to immediately open
the valve so that the
water is let out in the
nallah. With regards
to mosquito menace I
will ensure that fumigation is done,” assured Shewale

Premium FSI and a
greedy government
State finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has been most unkind to the middle class
residents of Mumbai and nearby cities. By
raising the cost of premium FSI, he has put
medium size houses which are already costly, beyond the reach of middle class people.
On the one hand, the central government
has been promising cheap and affordable
houses to the people of the country, while on
the other, the state government is trying to
do the opposite. Originally, FSI was a devise
conceived to keep the density of population
in urban surroundings under check. It is
strange that the greedy governments are
turning it into a source of revenue. At one
end, the government is promising free houses to the slum dwellers, who are nothing but
encroachers, at the other, it makes buying a
house by honest people impossible. Remember that middle class people want to buy a
house with their hard earned money but they
get no support from the government. The
contrast is clear: honest people are punished
or exploited and the encroachers are rewarded!
Looking at government’s finances, last
year, it is reported to have spent 73% of its
revenue on ‘establishment’ or staff salaries
and perks. Either it is over staffed or the
staffers are overpaid. Any sane government
should be making genuine efforts to control
this unproductive expenditure. That will provide a fillip to growth too. We are aware that
the state governments have few avenues for
raising revenues through direct taxes. Profession tax is probably the only direct tax in
its kitty. But that has limited scope for raising. And it also brings immediate reaction
from the citizens. Therefore, governments
are afraid of touching it. Motor vehicle tax
and stamp duty are two other sources which
are already over exploited. The former in particular should be used as a tool to control
vehicle population rather than one for raising revenue. VAT, being an indirect tax, is
bound to fan inflation. That leaves sales tax
as the only other source. The government
should be increasing sales tax on liquor and
tobacco products, as they injurious to people’s health. But the irony is that the budget
has made liquor cheaper! Milk is being made
costlier and liquor cheaper! Is it what people
expected from a BJP-led government?
Coming back to the issue of FSI, housing
is an essential after food and clothing and
only a morally bankrupt government can
think of making them costlier and putting
them beyond the reach of people. While the
very same government is making it difficult
to acquire rural land for industrial projects,
it is freely allowing urban land under its control to be encroached upon! The issue of land
is full of ironies.

Letters to the Editor....
Airoli Bridge – a dangerous road
Good Wishes for Gudi Padwa
The Airoli Bridge was opened for traffic in
January, 1999. During the last 16 years, the
traffic has increased a lot on this main road
connecting Thane-Belapur road and eastern
express
h i g h w a y.
The particular place
on
this
road near
G a r a m
Masala hotel (sec: 10
bus stop) is
very dangerous while crossing the road.
Few months back, a traffic signal was installed at this place. Most of the time, the signal is not working. Even when signal works
sometimes, many drivers don’t bother to halt
their vehicles to allow pedestrians to cross the
road. So, crossing the road at this place has
become highly risky.
Many senior citizens and school children
take a longer route to avoid crossing the main
road at this place. Many accidents have taken
place on this road at this particular place. During night time, due to glaring light from the
vehicles, it becomes more difficult to cross. But
the authorities are lethargic in solving the problem. The two speed-breakers on either side of
the road have got completely worn out.
Presence of a traffic police at this place will
help pedestrians to cross the road. The installation of traffic signal has completely failed to
solve the problem of pedestrian crossing here.
Footbridge at this place is also another solution. The authorities can also think of a subway at this place which can be used by pedestrians and also light vehicles.

I really love to see women play Lezim, Mahrashtra State’s Traditional Folk Dance during
the New Year of the State, Gudi Padwa Day, in
every nook and corner of the city. It is good to
witness such a colorful extravaganza
on the streets.
However, to be
able to celebrate
such a folk dance
in the streets of
Mumbai and Navi
Mumbai with gay
and gaiety is a
great achievement.
The Lezim Phugadi dances and their specific
gestures, movements have been adapted by
cultists, their exercises in the drive for “Body
Beautiful”. In Lezim dance there are various
types of movements like stepping, hopping,
squatting and bending. Every movement of the
dance is executed with perfect timing and proper strikes, which is swung in four or eight
counts. This provides a rhythmic accompaniment to the dance.
In Phugadi dance the girls stand facing each
other, crossing their arms they join their palms
and lean back with their feet together, while
doing so they outstretch their arms and whirl
round as far and as long as they can and then
part ways to perfection.
The state-wide dance programme in colorful attire shows Maharashtra’s tradition. Lezim on the streets creates awareness of the folk
dance to the people, who otherwise generally
think about Bollywood actors shaking their legs
for top numbers. With Lezim around, it is a
great show on Gudi Padwa. Good wishes for
Gudi Padwa!

Diagnosing for a better view of life.

NAVI MUMBAI: Fortis
Hospital Vashi organized a Free Heath
Check-up Camp at Taloja Jail, for the prisoners. More than 250 jail
inmates took the opportunity to get familiar
with health issues and
received tips from the
experts on how to take
care of themselves.
The Multi-specialty
Camp organized by Fortis Hospital Vashi included a number of free
Health check-ups like;
Body Mass Index
(BMI), Blood Pressure
(BP), Random Blood
Sugar, Electro Cardiogram (ECG), Bone Mineral Density (BMD),
Ear, Nose and Throat
(ENT) and Dental
Check-ups which was
followed by Doctor consultation.
The prisoners took
keen interest in getting
the check-ups done and
enthusiastically interacted the physicians,
raising queries on different issues related to
health and wellness.
The doctors were impressed by their concern for their health
The prisoners took keen interest during the check-ups
done and enthusiastically interacted the physicians
and happily obliged.
Dr. Bipin Chevale,
Facility Director, Fortis
Vashi said: “Everyone
deserves to be in good
health, irrespective of
their circumstances,
and so do the inmates
of the prison. We were
happy to see such a positive response from the
inmates and were surprised to know that
they were so concerned
about health issues.
There is a strong correlation between the
physical and emotional
health. We believe that
these check-ups will
encourage inmates to
take better care of their
health and look at life
in a far more constructive manner.”
Shamkant Shedge,
Jail Administratorat
Taloja Jail said, “We
are happy to have conducted health checkups for the prisoners,
who also have a right
to good health. We feel
that the concern for better health should encourage them to leave
their unlawful ways
and get into the mainstream at the earliest.
We thank Fortis Hospital Vashi for this initiative and are hopeful
that these efforts will
leave a positive impact
on the minds of the inmates.”
