THE CHALLENGE

THE CHALLENGE
The world's largest commercialscale propylene oxide plant with
an innovative HPPO technology
required service work. The scope
of work included the servicing of
different valve types from a variety
of manufacturers, with the added
complications of a very tight shutdown
period.
A leading U.S. refinery, was planning a
major turnaround of its deasphalting
plant in 2014. The shutdown had a
critical two-week time frame and
included the routine repair and
maintenance of ten large Vanessa
triple offset valves.
A major UK oil refining company
required Pentair to provide a specialist
valve management solution to include
the management of over 11,000
control valves.
THE SOLUTION
Working closely with our Dutch and
Belgian service experts, Pentair
serviced 160 safety valves and
80 control valves with pneumatic
actuators from a variety of
manufacturers, including 14 Vanessa
triple offset valves with Biffi actuators.
THE OUTCOME
Positively impressed by the service
team's support and performance, the
customer asked Pentair to service
an additional 214 Biffi actuators. This
activity was successfully accomplished
- all onsite and within the planned
shutdown period.
THE SOLUTION
The Corona, CA service team
developed a planning and repair
execution strategy to help the refinery
get back online in just 13 days.
Through expert planning, spare part
procurement and coordinated shop
schedules the refinery was back to
production in under two weeks.
THE OUTCOME
Pentair delivered great value by
performing the shutdown on time and
with no EHS issues.
THE SOLUTION
Pentair implemented an Asset
Management database, combining
predictive spares management with
the latest Risk Based Inspection (RBI)
and Root Cause Failure Analysis
(RCFA) methodology. This allowed the
Pentair team to monitor each control
valve more effectively, which in turn
helped the client to maximize the
service life of its assets and improve
the efficiency of its plant.
THE OUTCOME
By improving valve reliability and
extending service intervals, Pentair’s
complete Asset Management strategy
has enabled the oil refining company
to achieve cost savings of between 30
to 35 percent on an annual basis.
