Gloria Dei Lutheran Church March 29, 2015 GATHERING SONG 9:30 a.m., Palm Sunday Hosanna (Praise is Rising) Brown/Baloche PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL P C Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna to the Son of David. P C The Lord be with you. And also with you. P Let us pray. Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us life everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. C PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL Mark 11:1-11 When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'" They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. THANKSGIVING P C The Lord be with you. And also with you. P C Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. P We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was acclaimed Son of David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path. C We ask that you bless these branches and those who bear them, and grant that we may ever hail him as our Lord and King and follow him with perfect confidence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. P C Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest. SONG A WORD FOR THE CHILDREN Hosanna, Loud Hosanna THE READING: Isaiah 50:4-9a 4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens — wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. LENTEN SENTENCE Here’s My Heart SECOND READING: Philippians 2:5-11 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 6 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON Pastor Charles Bang THE SERMON HYMN W&P 140 There is a Redeemer THE PRAYERS WELCOME AND SHARING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. SONG At the Cross (Love Ran Red) Verse 1 There's a place Where mercy reigns and never dies There's a place Where streams of grace flow deep and wide Where all the love I've ever found Comes like a flood comes flowing down Chorus 1 At the cross at the cross I surrender my life I'm in awe of You I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white I owe all to You I owe all to You (Jesus) Verse 2 There's a place Where sin and shame are powerless Where my heart Has peace with God and forgiveness Where all the love I've ever found Comes like a flood comes flowing down (Bridge) Here my hope is found Here on holy ground Here I bow down here I bow down Here arms open wide Here You saved my life Here I bow down here I bow (down) Chorus 2 At the cross at the cross I surrender my life I'm in awe of You I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white I owe all to You I owe all to You I owe all to You I owe all to You Jesus CCLI Song # 7017786 Chris Tomlin | Ed Cash | Jonas Myrin | Matt Armstrong | Matt Redman © Countless Wonder Publishing (Admin. by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc.) Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE Merciful God, accompany our journey through these forty days. Renew us in the gift of baptism, that we may provide for those who are poor, pray for those in need, fast from self-indulgence, and above all that we may find our treasure in the life of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE O God most mighty, O God most merciful, O God our rock and our salvation, hear us as we praise, call us to your table, grant us your life. When the earth was a formless void, you formed order and beauty. When Abraham and Sarah were barren, you sent them a child; When the Israelites were enslaved, you led them to freedom. Ruth faced starvation, David fought Goliath, and the psalmists cried out for healing, and full of compassion, you granted the people your life. You entered our sorrows in Jesus our brother. He was born among the poor, he lived under oppression, he wept over the city. With infinite love, he granted the people your life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Together as the body of Christ, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. THE OFFERING As you come forward to commune today, please place your offering in the basket on the table. COMMUNION All those who believe that in the Eucharist our Lord Jesus Christ offers us his gifts of love and forgiveness are welcome at the Lord’s Table. If you wish to receive by Common Cup, please extend hands—palms up. If you wish to intinct (dip), cross one arm across your chest. If you desire simply a blessing, cross both arms over chest. Lead Me to the Cross Rid me of myself I belong to You Oh lead me lead me to the cross Verse 1 Saviour I come quiet my soul Remember redemption's hill Where Your blood was spilled For my ransom (Pre-Chorus) Ev’rything I once held dear I count it all as loss Verse 2 You were as I tempted and tried, human The word became flesh Bore my sin and death Now You're risen Chorus 1 Lead me to the cross Where Your love poured out Bring me to my knees Lord I lay me down (Bridge) To Your heart To Your heart Lead me to Your heart Lead me to Your heart CCLI Song # 4785828Brooke Ligertwood © 2006 Hillsong Music Publishing (Admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing) For use solely with the SongSelect Terms of Use. SONG AFTER COMMUNION Seed, scattered and sown SENDING OF COMMUNION Compassionate God, as Jesus called disciples to follow him, bless those who go forth to share your word and sacrament with those who are at home, hospitalized, in caring facilities, or Sunrise House. May these gifts be signs of our love and prayers, that through the sharing of the body and blood of Christ, all may know your grace and healing revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The theme of the month of March is “Listening to God’s Voice.” We find true and abiding life in Jesus. Jesus tells his disciples that he will endure hard times—even death upon the cross. We explore the stories of Abraham and Sarah, who, like Jesus, listened to God’s voice, and obeyed. We will also explore our family tree. Our Bible lesson comes from Genesis 17:1-7 and 17:15-16. The memory verse for March comes from Genesis 17:7: Pre K-K - "I promise to be your God." 1st - 5th - "I will make an agreement with you and your descendants that I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you." The closing prayer for the month: Dear God, Thank you for speaking to us. Please help us to listen to you every day, all day long. We want to hear your voice. Amen. Women of the ELCA of Gloria Dei: April 27, 6:30-8:30, in the Simeon Center Once again, WELCA will be gathering supplies to make Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. “When LWR distributes Personal Care Kits, it’s often to people who have lost everything. In the wake of an earthquake, or having fled from violence as their homes were overtaken, they clasp a towel from a faraway place, with a bar of soap, a toothbrush…and washing up, they know that they have not been forsaken by the world. The very simple gesture of giving a Personal Care Kit can give someone the encouragement to start anew, starting with a bath. You can share God’s grace and love by providing that simple comfort.” Anyone may donate any of the following items. Please drop off donations in the designated box in the Atrium, by Sunday April, 26. One light-weight bath-size towel (between 20"×40" & 52"×27"), dark color recommended Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging, toothbrush multi-packs are acceptable One sturdy full-sized comb One metal nail clippers (attached file optional) #14—Food Pantry Needs The Food Pantry is in need of food at all times of the year!
