Dear Parents
Celebration has always been a distinctive feature of the
Catholic faith and in particular Catholic schools have always seen that celebration is an important part of building
community. On Tuesday evening it was wonderful to host
the official blessing and opening of the College. It was a
significant occasion in the new life of the College and it
was significant that the Archbishop of Brisbane, the Most
Reverend Mark Coleridge was present to lead our celebration. Archbishop Mark was very generous in his support
for the College and it certainly added to the evening to
have him bless the original building as a symbol of our new
life as Ambrose Treacy College. The night was also very
significant for the wider Edmund Rice Education Australia
community –Ambrose Treacy College is the first mainstream school across Australia opened by EREA. To mark
this special event it was great to have Br Paul Oakley, President of the EREA Council, Br Peter Clinch Oceania Province Leader of the Christian Brothers, Mr Graham Goerke,
Chair of the EREA National Board and Dr Wayne Tinsey
Executive Director of EREA present with us for the evening.
It was a great evening and my only regret was that we
were not able to open up the evening to our whole ATC
community. Unfortunately with nearly 400 in attendance
from our invited guests, staff and students and parents of
year 8, space did not allow us to extend an open invitation
to our whole community.
The highlights of the evening for me were certainly our
students involvement and I would like to congratulate our
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who warmly
welcomed our gathering in a welcome to country dance,
all the students involved in the musical performances and
Quentijn Whitfield and Patrick Robinson who offered a
vote of thanks at the end of the evening. It was a real
pleasure to receive so many complimentary messages at
the end of the evening from our invited guests. Most comments centred on the wonderful liturgy to start off proceedings as well as the impressive performance of all our
students on the night.

As you can imagine there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to have a successful production like this
and I would like to thank Conor Finn, our Dean of Formation and Jodi Rivalland, PA to the College Leadership
Team who were responsible for orchestrating this special
event. Their attention to detail and thoughtful preparation
was very evident and on behalf of the whole community I
would like to acknowledge and thank Conor and Jodi on a
great job. I would also like to thank all our staff who contributed to the evening from our ground staff who had the
place picture perfect for the occasion, to our music staff
who always do an amazing job in preparing our students,
and to our front office staff who are always generous in
their assistance to ensure all the little things are taken care
of. I would also like to thank one of our parents, Grant Parker, who assisted by recording the evening from a photographic perspective; an important task in this historic moment for the College. Thank you to everyone involved it
was truly a memorable evening for the College.
In my address on the night I made the connection that it
was fitting that our opening coincided with the 35th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Romero. In a poem “A

Romero we are reminded that “We plant seeds that one
day will grow. We water seeds already planted knowing
that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will
need further development. We provide yeast that provides effects far beyond our capabilities.” This sentiment is
certainly true for the ATC Community and in our hands we
have the start of an opportunity to build a school that will
provide an exciting future for countless young ATC men for
many years to come.
For some this will be in outdoor cricket while for others it
was realised in indoor cricket. Either way the main ingredients were fun and enjoyment as boys took up the challenge to follow their passion and dreams. The cruel face of
cricket meant that not all days were the days of following
P&F Welcome Evening
Last Saturday I had the pleasure to share a great evening
with well over 250 parents at our annual Welcome Evening hosted by the P&F. Even the annual rain curse that accompanies this event could not dampen the enthusiasm of
the night. With most parents taking up the challenge of
the Irish theme the night was a great introduction to our
community for many new families. We are very lucky to
have such an energetic P&F Association and one that really
embraces their call to help us build community here at
ATC. Once again with any event there is always a core of
willing workers who take on the added responsibility to
plan the night. The success of the night was in no small
way due to the diligent work of the organising committee,
Alicen Warriner, Anda Bakker, Cheryl Lock and Lee-Mary
Hosking who worked tirelessly in the lead up to the night
to ensure we all had such a great time. Thank you to everyone who assisted on the night, once again the number of
volunteers who assisted was overwhelming. We are very
lucky to be a part of such a generous and committed parent community.
Prayers
I would ask everyone to please keep James Crilly (6 Bod-
kin) and his family in your prayers and thoughts following
the recent passing of his Grandfather. We hope the passage of time will help ease the loss they will be feeling at
this sad time May eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and
let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Cricket Season
This Saturday marks the end of the term 1 cricket season.
Here at the College we have tried to provide opportunities
for all boys who want to follow their cricketing passions.
in the footsteps of our cricket idols with plenty of runs and
wickets, but the thought of the next weekend meant that
chance of a big score or a few wickets kept everyone focussed. It was great to see so many students involved in
our cricket program. Developing cricket skills, learning and
understanding the values of sportsmanship and being a
part of a team are certainly goals of our program.
There are few better ways to experience and learn to deal
with disappointments in life than in the sporting arena and
I am grateful that we can offer our boys a rich learning
context in our sporting program. I would like to once again
thank all our staff who so generously commit to our cocurricular program. I know of very few schools that can
match the commitment of our staff. Without teachers willing to turn out for training after school and their willingness to give up a Saturday morning when a cosy sleep-in is
a more attractive proposition, the cricket season just
wouldn’t happen.
Thank you to all the parents who have assisted with umpiring, scoring and coaching throughout the season – your
efforts have not gone unnoticed. On behalf of all the cricketers I would like to thank Dave Capra who has once again
organised the cricket draw and season with his usual meticulous efficiency, and to Luke Donatini who has ensured
that our indoor cricket program is energetic and engaging
for the boys. I would also like to thank Brett Henschell and
all the coaches from the Henschell Cricket Academy who
were a great addition to our coaching ranks this year. I
would also like to extend a particular thank you to our behind the scenes men, Wayne Green, and the rest of the
ground staff for ensuring the fields both here at the College and the other home venues we use in the western
suburbs were ready each week.

Whole School Photo
A whole school photo will be taken on Tuesday 31 March. This is a special occasion being the historical photo to celebrate
and remember the first group of students and staff at Ambrose Treacy College. I would encourage all families to ensure if
possible that their son is here for this photo. The photo will be taken in stages from 8.30am to around 11.00am. Sections
will be photographed in Year level groups. Due to the special nature of the photo all boys must wear their full formal uniform – this includes blue stripped school shirt, college tie and college jacket.
Term 2 Uniform
From Day 1 Term 2 (Monday 20 April) all boys are to wear the winter uniform. This is the formal uniform mentioned
above - blue stripped school shirt, college tie and college jacket. Boys are to wear this to and from school, unless they
have training before or after school. During the school day, boys may elect to wear their jacket or not.
Last week of Term
ATC will conclude Term 1 with a liturgy at 2pm on Thursday 2 April. The final day will include normal lessons for the first
three periods of the day followed by the Lenten Fair. There has been a great buzz of excitement and fun around the
school grounds over the last two weeks as the boys have been organising and being involved in numerous fund raising
activities. This will culminate with our Lenten Fair next Thursday to be followed by our End of Term Liturgy. All parents are
invited to join us for the liturgy.
ANZAC Campout
ANZAC Day holds a significant place in our country’s history. This year it has even more special significance as we celebrate the centenary of the ANZAC’s landing at Gallipoli. Many celebrations will be held across our country and across the
world. ATC is planning an opportunity for our community to come together and commemorate the 100 year anniversary.
On Friday 24 April, the 2015 ANZAC Campout will be held on Jack Bowers ovals. The campout is for ATC to commemorate
this historic event and I encourage families to go online via Trybookings and book their tickets. The organising committee
would appreciate bookings before the Easter holidays to assist with the planning for the campout. This is a whole family
event and we ask that parents are directly involved with their children.
Academic Coaching Term 2
Academic coaching will be offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Sessions are $10 each and students
are to attend a minimum of two sessions per week. Sessions must be booked in blocks of 10 and payment can only be
made online by clicking here. Please email Mrs Jodi Rivalland to confirm your interest by Wednesday 1st April.

Nurturing Seeds
During the course of this week, whether it be our Blessing and Official Opening, meeting prospective families at enrolment interviews and tour mornings, discussing with parents the progress of their son (including how their son is already
close to outgrowing his College jacket!) or catching up with colleagues at our school and other EREA schools, a common
theme has emerged to me – our College prides itself on nurturing the gifts, talents and hopes of young men.
Furthermore, below are some wise words with which I’ve been recently gifted. The words reinforce the theme of nurturing young men and our mission as an Edmund Rice school.

Each of my experiences this week have reaffirmed my ongoing commitment as a teacher in an Edmund Rice school.
They have reaffirmed my decision to join the Ambrose Treacy community. They have inspired me to continue to be hope
filled about the tremendous possibilities that our College community can pursue.
Term 2 & 3 Winter Uniform
For the duration of Term 2 and 3 all students will be required to wear a College tie for the whole day and their College
jacket to and from school. During days that the College sports uniform is to be worn, the College jumper or tracksuit
jacket can be worn.
Hair & Grooming
All students need to ensure that they meet the College’s expectations in relation to our hair and grooming guidelines.
Hair should be above the eyebrow, ears and collar and should not have any artificial colouring. Hair should be no shorter
than a gauge 2.
Middle School Student Council
Our Middle School Student Council has been formed and has already had two very successful and productive meetings.
They are currently leading their respective Homerooms in developing Lenten Fare activities. I’ve been most impressed
with the commitment and the leadership skills already displayed be all members.
Homeroom Happenings
Our Homerooms are currently enacting a Lenten commitment to supporting those at the margins of our society by creating Lenten Fare fundraising activities. Our end of term Lenten Fare is set to be a fun-filled way to celebrate Easter. All
the funds raised will go towards supporting our local community Friendship Groups.
Lost Property
Our Middle School students need to take far greater responsibility for their property. Far too any lunch boxes, water
bottles and hats are being deposited on our Middle School Lost Property bin. Your support with promoting with your
son a more responsible approach to looking after personal property would be greatly appreciated.

The mission of the ATC STEM faculty is to inspire, challenge and raise the aspirations of the students in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics.
Sometimes great learnings about STEM sit outside that which is achievable in the classroom covering the Australian Curriculum. Competitions, team challenges and clubs allow us to provide the boys with opportunities to
encounter these learnings.
Many co-curricular opportunities will become available to interested STEM students over the course of the coming year starting with Robotics and Engineering clubs in term 2.
Robotics club – Year 7 and 8 students have been working with Robots in Digital Technology in Term 1. As a result, all students have covered the basics of robotics and programming. The robotics club will explore this further by allowing students to build and program their own robotic solutions to defined problems. Next term we
will focus on space design challenges. The robotics club will take place on Tuesday afternoon from 3:15 –
5:00pm. Robotics club students will compete in the First Lego League (FLL) competition at QUT in November.
They will also run introductory robotics programs for the junior school boys in later terms.
Engineering club – Middle School students are invited to join the Engineering Club commencing in Term 3. At
Engineering Club students will be given design problems to solve in an efficient manner. Engineering club students will be encouraged to participate in the Maryborough Technology Challenge in their human powered vehicle competition in coming years.
Competitions – A number of competitions will be entered in the coming year giving our students the opportunity to compete against students from other schools or to achieve high results individually. Teams from year 7
and 8 will be representing the school in the upcoming Da Vinci decathlon at AB Patterson College in May. The
Big Science competition will also take place in May and is open to all Middle School students. Students will be
given information about how to enter this competition at an upcoming assembly.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SINGS AND RINGS
As we have been concentrating on practices for the College Opening's liturgical music, the Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Handbell ensembles will NOT be performing at the Autumn Concert tonight. Today we commenced new music, so that we will be ready for
Term 2's Winter Concert.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SINGS AND RINGS
Ringers will NOT be performing tonight as we have been practising for the College's liturgy. We shall be performing at term 2's concert.
Singers will meet outside the main office just after 3pm tomorrow FRIDAY to be driven by bus to Brigidine. Practice is from 3.15pm
to 5pm. Parents are to collect their sons from Brigidine at 5.10pm. Flautists will be collected by bus from Brigidine at 4.30pm to be
taken to their QTC performance.

As term 1 comes to a close, we are starting to see some beautiful artworks reach completion. Our talented ATC artists
have been working hard all term on their masterpieces, and we have begun to display some of the finished products
around the school. In the Student Reception you’ll find some of our Year 8 students’ clay masks and mask cut-outs, as
well as the Year 5 screen prints.
Our Year 5 artists converted their sketches of the Edmund Rice Building to stencils for their screen prints. and results
show that we have some pretty talented sketchers in our midst!
Our Year 4, 6 and 7 boys are in the final stages of completing their assessment pieces, adding the finishing touches
of colour. These works will be up on display around the school early next term.
Mrs Hawkins Tuesday Art Club boys are finalising their ‘Street art Canvas’.
Art Club for Term 2 will be invitation only, based on the term 1 waiting list, then if places are still available it will be
offered to all students. Notices will be sent out this week.
If you have any empty containers, foam meat trays, or anything of a similar sort just laying around at home or waiting
for recycling day, we’d love to take them off your hands! Any donations are greatly appreciated. Now that the cricket
season is drawing to a close we are asking for donations of old cricket bats for a future art project.

Inaugural ATC Welcome Night. A big shout out to the organisers of the Welcome Night—Alicen
Warriner, Lee Mary Hosking, Anda Bakker and Cheryl Lock for their hard work in coordinating the
Irish themed night. It was a fantastic evening, and the biggest opening function on record. It was
a fantastic culmination of months of hard work, even if the weather tried to rain on our parade.
In addition, we are delighted to advise that the winner of the raffle prize—one term’s tuition
fees—is Bronwyn Shanahan. Congratulations Bronwyn! As a result, Bronwyn’s son Eddie (Year 7)
is the winner of a massive Toblerone bar. We wonder who is more excited?
