Rabbi Steven Morgen
was always bothered by the description of the so-called
“wicked” child in the “Four Sons” passage in the Passover
Haggadah. After all, on the face of it, his (or her) question is
not so terrible. In Hebrew, it consists of four words: Mah ha’avodah hazot lakhem?
(What does this “work” mean to you?) It could be that this child is simply asking
what anyone at the table might ask: why are we doing this ritual? What is the
purpose of reading this long, boring book (the Haggadah) when we are all so
hungry? Let’s eat already!
But, the Hebrew word avodah can actually have several, very different,
meanings. It can mean “work,” but it can also mean “worship” (of God – through
prayer, ritual or sacrifice). It also comes from the same root as the word for “slavery”. This gives rise to another interpretation of the “Wicked Child’s” question:
“You say that God rescued us from slavery in Egypt. But look, now we are
essentially slaves to God, who commands us to follow all kinds of laws, rituals,
and decrees. Even this Seder ritual that keeps us from enjoying a delicious meal
is an oppression that our new Taskmaster (God) has foisted upon us. So what
have we gained from the Exodus from Egypt? We have simply exchanged one
tyrant for another.”
My teacher, Rabbi Eliezer Diamond, offered an answer to this question. It
is true that the Exodus from Egypt did not grant us unrestrained freedom to do
whatever we please. Upon leaving Egypt, we traveled to Mount Sinai where
we were given the Ten Declarations which were followed by hundreds of other
rules that are designed to govern every aspect of our private lives as well as our
public interactions. But there is a crucial difference between slavery to Pharaoh
and worship/obedience to God. Pharaoh sought to destroy our people, to profit
immensely from their free, back-breaking labor, and to crush our spirit and our
cultural identity.
God, on the other hand, gave us rules and rituals that nurture the soul, enhance the quality of life, foster strong and healthy family relationships, create a
just and compassionate society, and satisfy our spiritual yearnings for a relationship
with our Creator. Love your neighbor as yourself. Use fair weights and measures
in your business. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul and strength.
Be kind to animals. Return lost objects to their rightful owners. Even the Passover
ritual, which too often we see as a burden, can be a hallowed time for sharing
the values of our Jewish faith, heritage, history and traditions with our children
and grandchildren.
We connect the festival of Passover to the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) by counting
every day of the seven weeks until the 50th day. The ritual of connecting Passover
to Shavuot (which commemorates the giving of the Ten Declarations), reflects
the Jewish belief that freedom alone is not sufficient. We were freed precisely
so that we could worship God, whose commands sanctify our lives (as we say in
the blessings we recite when we perform the commandments). The change in
“Taskmasters” makes all the difference in the world.

Friday, Apr. 3, is the first night of Passover. Just about
every Jew goes to a Seder that night. But there is another
ritual on that day to which all of you are invited.
On the morning before Passover, following the regular
daily service, we hold a special ceremony in the Greenfield
Chapel. We complete the study of a tractate of Talmud. Why
do we do this now? Traditionally, the firstborn males fasted
on the day before Passover, as an acknowledgment of their
being spared in the plague of the firstborn in Egypt which
occurred that day. Since it is a minor fast which only applies
to a small subset of the Jewish people, participating in this
joyous siyyum (completion ceremony) exempts the firstborn
from the especially difficult fast before the Seder.
The J.B. Greenfield Chapel is there for happy occasions
(the occasional baby-naming, aufruf, and special birthday
and anniversary celebrations) and for sad times, when our
members come to recite Kaddish and remember loved ones.
But it is also there for regular occasions, for all the days which
fall on our Jewish calendar.
Even if you are not a firstborn male, you are welcome to
join us for the siyyum and the breakfast afterwards. Special
thanks to Paul Katz and our Beth Yeshurun Brotherhood for
sponsoring this special breakfast!

Carnival
2015!
Despite less than perfect
weather, Congregation Beth
Yeshurun celebrated its annual
Purim Carnival on Sunday,
March 1st. We brought our
fun indoors and the halls of
the synagogue were filled with
families enjoying games and
good food. Of course we still
had our carnival rides outside,
which we were able to enjoy
after the rain let up.
Thanks to all who helped
to plan our carnival and to all
who attended – we hope you
enjoyed a fun day!
Chag Sameach Purim!

weekly bulletin and a notification letter sent to the
honoree or a deceased person’s family member. One
such notification letter will be sent per donation.
The deadline for donations to be published in the
weekly bulletin is the previous Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Donations are published upon submission and
will not be “held” for future publication. When
you make a donation to Beth Yeshurun, please be
sure to provide all of the necessary information:
who the donation is in memory of, who or what the
donation is in honor of, who needs to be notified of
the donation (name and complete address) and by
whom the donation is given. When this information
is incomplete, we are unable to process your
donation efficiently. Donations with no specific
fund indicated will be credited to the Synagogue
General Fund. Beth Yeshurun appreciates your
generosity and support.
