Northeast High School
March/April 2015
Dear Northeast Parents,
Eagles are off to a great start for the new semester. You will know exactly how well your Eagle is
doing when Interim Reports come home with your student on March 5 (Please contact the main office if
you need to be “plugged in” to your student’s grades through Parent Connect).
I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the 86 students who achieved perfect attendance
for the 1st semester, and the 94 students who had perfect attendance for the 2nd marking period. This
achievement shows dedication and perseverance, and these students are to be commended for this
achievement. What our students are doing once inside their classrooms is also spectacular. Forty-eight
Eagles made the Principal’s Honor Roll, while 495 students made Honor Roll. Congratulations to these
students, they are in hot pursuit of their happiness through high academic achievement. If your student
did not make the Honor Roll “yet,” ask your student if they are taking part in the extra help provided by
daily I and I sessions, as well as Extra Help Mondays.
If you are the parent of a senior, this is the time of year to keep checking with your student to
make sure they are finishing strong and taking care of all their senior business as their graduation date of
May 29th begins to draw near. Seniors, STAY THE COURSE. Be sure that you accomplish, fully and
completely, your work as a Northeast Eagle. We look forward to your ceremony which will be held here
at Northeast High School on a beautiful sunny day.
Parents of our underclassman, your students are meeting with their counselors to finalize their
course selection sheets and choose courses that will get them to their post-secondary opportunity. Soon
your student will bring home their course verification sheet for you to sign. Please be sure to review the
course verification sheet with your student, and make changes that you feel are necessary. This will be
the last opportunity to change courses for next year. Also, please consider signing your student up for
the MJROTC elective. This course is an excellent way for students to build leadership skills and selfdiscipline to achieve their future goals. This is not a recruiting program for the military and it is open to
both boys and girls. Please see the enclosed flyer that further explains the program, or call our Office of
School Counseling if you have further questions.

**Important Note Regarding Inclement Weather
and Emergency School Closings
The school calendar has five days built in at the end
of the school year for emergency closings. If more
than five additional makeup days are needed:

Monday, March 30 through Thursday, April 2 the first four days of Spring Break - will be used
(in that order) for potential makeup days.

Additional inclement weather closings after
April 2, and any days needed beyond nine, will
be added onto the end of the school year.

Inclement Weather Closings
The Board of Education has unanimously approved changes in the 2014-2015 school year that clearly
address the handling of inclement weather closings and allow parents to make plans for Easter/Spring break and
summer vacations.
Under the revisions approved by the Board on May 7, 2014, five days are built into the calendar for
inclement weather closings as opposed to the four included in past years. Should more than five days be necessary,
the sixth through ninth days will be taken, in order, from the first four days of Easter/Spring break (March 30, 2015
through April 2, 2015).
The calendar further stipulates that should any or all of the sixth through ninth days be needed for inclement
weather closings after April 2, 2015, the necessary makeup days would be added onto the end of the school year.
Any additional days necessary beyond the ninth day, regardless of when they occur, would also be added to the end
of the school year.
Under the approved calendar, schools and offices would still be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday,
with no plans to utilize those days as makeup days.

Graduating Students’ Involvement with
Drugs and Alcohol
Graduating students who violate Board policies on possession, consumption, or distribution of
alcoholic beverages, controlled dangerous substances, counterfeit controlled dangerous substances,
non-controlled substances as defined by Article 27, Section 286B of the Annotated Code of Maryland,
or other intoxicants at any time during the last four weeks of school prior to the last scheduled day for
graduating students, or during the time between the last scheduled day and the graduation ceremony,
whether the activity takes place on school buses, within a school building or upon any school property,
or during any school, school-related, or Board sponsored activity, whether held on school property or at
locations off school property including private clubs, businesses, or commercial establishments, shall be
prohibited from participation in all senior activities, including proms, awards ceremonies and graduation
ceremonies.
Diplomas earned by students denied participation in graduation ceremonies will be available
upon request in the office of the appropriate school principal on the first workday following graduation
ceremonies.


Alternative to Drugs Program, Responsible Actions Program, or
Anti-Tobacco Use Program.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE
Members of the Class of 2015 who hope to
play Division I or II athletics need to process a form
for the Clearinghouse. The NCAA applications

taken the SAT I or the ACT at least once. When
this form is mailed with the fee, make sure that the
applicant keeps track of his/her pin number. This
number will be needed any time an applicant wants
to access the status of his/her application.

Seniors requiring transcripts for college
applications or scholarships must have a transcript
release form, signed by a parent, on file in the
Office of School Counseling. All transcripts are

The High School Work Study Program is designed for high school students who

THE UPCOMING PARCC ASSESSMENTS
1. What is PARCC?
The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) are required assessments that
were designed by a group of states working together on a common assessment linked to the Common Core State
Standards. The assessment is comprised of two parts: the Performance Based Assessment (PBA) given in early
spring and the End of Year (EOY) given around May. These tests will provide a more accurate measure of a
student’s critical thinking, problem-solving, reading, and writing skills. States involved will have comparable
results, and students, parents, and teachers will have detailed information on whether students are on track for postsecondary success. More background information can be found at www.parcconline.org. In Maryland, PARCC is
replacing the MSA and HSA Algebra 1 and HSA English 10 assessments.
2. What PARCC assessments are being administered during the 2014-2015 school year?
English/Language Arts and Mathematics in grades 3-8, and Algebra I, Algebra II, and English 10 for middle and
high school students enrolled in those courses.
3. Which students are required to participate in PARCC testing?
All students in grades 3-8 as well as those enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra II, and/or English 10 will be required to
participate in the PARCC assessments. The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, more commonly
known as No Child Left Behind, requires school districts to assess students annually.
4. What Maryland assessments have been replaced by the above PARCC assessments?
The PARCC assessments will replace the Reading and Mathematics MSA tests in grades 3-8 and the Algebra I and
English 10 HSAs. The Algebra II assessment is new, and is designed to gauge college and career readiness.
5. What other Maryland assessments will continue to be administered during the 2014-2015 school year and
who will participate?
Students in grades 5 and 8 will continue to take the MSA Science, and high school students enrolled in Government
and Biology will continue to take the corresponding HSA.
6. Why is student participation in PARCC testing important?
States involved in PARCC assessments will have comparable results, and students, parents, and teachers will have a
better idea of whether students are on track for post-secondary success. Test scores from this year will be
considered baseline data points for students, schools, and school districts.
7. How does the district/state plan to use my student’s PARCC scores?
Annual testing is an important way to monitor whether all students are making academic progress. PARCC scores
will not be comparable to MSA scores, and will use an entirely new scoring system. Therefore, a direct correlation
between MSA and PARCC scores should not be made.
Scores from the 2014-2015 assessment will represent new baseline data for Maryland and will be shared with
students, teachers, parents, schools, school districts, and the state. Federal law requires states to assess all students
annually in Reading and Mathematics as a mandatory part of school progress monitoring.
8. Which students will take the PARCC assessments using the paper-and-pencil format?
Most students in grades 3 and 8 and any student with a disability that impacts his or her ability to test via computer
will take the paper-and-pencil version of the test. Students in these two grades will utilize the paper-and-pencil
format in order to give schools more flexibility in scheduling other students for online assessments.
9. Which students will take the PARCC assessments online?
Students in grades 4-7, and those enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra II, and English 10. Some students in grades 3 and 8
will take the online test if their teachers have determined that they will benefit from features available on the online
test.
10. When are students participating in PARCC testing?
The PBA testing window opens on March 9. The EOY window opens on April 27. Each school will develop its
own testing schedule within the testing windows. That schedule is attached to this document.
11. What happens if a child is late or absent during the scheduled PARCC testing day(s)?
Students will be provided an opportunity to make up any missed portion of the PARCC assessments during the
testing window.
12. How will be parents be notified if a school’s PARCC testing schedule changes?
Changes to the primary testing window will be communicated through various methods, including email, automated
telephone calls, and social media.

14. How will PARCC testing impact graduation requirements for high school students?
Students will not be required to pass the Algebra I and English 10 PARCC assessments in order to receive a
Maryland High School diploma until 2016-17. However, current students are required to participate in both the
PARCC Algebra I and English 10 assessments if they are enrolled in the course.
In addition, students must meet all other testing requirements and complete the coursework and credits necessary to
graduate.
