Course Description
Prescribed and over-the-counter medicines influence how and whether patients benefit from
rehabilitation therapies. Knowledge by rehabilitation specialists of drug administration, actions, and
adverse reactions thus enhances the probability of safe and effective treatment outcomes. This
course will examine drug families and drugs commonly used in rehabilitation across spectra of illness,
disease, and disability. It will begin with foundational principles in pharmacology. Course sections will
then focus on body systems that are treated with common pharmaceuticals used for inflammation and
pain, as well as diseases and disorders of the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, endocrine,
and nervous systems. Each section will examine methods of drug and medication action, medication
influences on patients undergoing rehabilitation therapies, as well as common adverse effects and
patient errors during self-administration. Content will include contemporary issues in women’s health,
and use of internet-based free-ware resources that enhance understanding for prescription and nonprescription medication use. The course concludes with presentation and discussion of common overthe-counter drugs and herbals focusing on their hazards, interactions with prescription drugs, and
adverse effects influencing successful rehabilitation. Your active involvement is required in order to
complete the course and to ensure a dynamic learning experience.
Course Purpose Statement
This course will examine drug families and drugs commonly used in rehabilitation of across spectra
of illness, disease, and disability. Contact hours will be available for nurses who have not previously
taken this course.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
1.Describe 3 basic principles of pharmacokinetics that control drug uptake, distribution, bioavailability,
and metabolism.
2.List 2 benefits, 2 limitations, and 2 adverse effects of 2 drug families that are used to treat
inflammation and pain.
3.For disorders of the musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, nervous, and endocrine systems identify 2
drugs each that treat these disorders, the specific disorder they treat, and the major adverse effect
of treatment.
4.Identify 2 common errors made by patients when taking their prescribed medicines.
5.List 2 major ways in which over-the-counter medications, herbals, and neutraceuticals interact with
prescription drugs.
