Every caregiving relationship is different…
A couple of years ago, I shared with you my own experience of needing others
to help me when I was going through my diagnoses and treatment for Breast
Cancer. I shared that it was very difficult for me to accept help from others,
even after spending a life-time “caring” for others, both in my personal life for
family and friends and professionally for over 35 years.

Well in this newsletter I want to share with you that I have recently been going
Executive Director
through a new caregiving experience as the primary caregiver for my husband
who is even more reluctant to accept help from others, including me. It is amazing how I
understand him so well but get so frustrated because I feel that with all that we have been through
together, (he was certainly there for me) he should willingly accept my help. He has been
diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Disease and Cancer and we have been back and forth to four
specialist (Nephrologist, Oncologist, Urologist, and Hematologist, as well as appointments in
Vascular Medicine & consultation with a Vascular Surgeon, etc.) and countless trips to the lab to
do follow-up tests for each, as they all try to figure out together the best treatment plan, all things
considered.
In addition to all of the medical appointments, I have been overwhelmingly busy dealing with the
ongoing responsibilities of managing LIVE OAK as we move to the next level, as described by
our Board Chair in his article.
And yet, I am truly sustained and renewed each day when I come into the office and get a chance
to spend time in the program room visiting with clients or chatting with caregivers about their
challenges, sharing my own. It suddenly dawned on me that each caregiving experience is
different based upon the relationship that you have with the individual that you are caring for.
My parents were easy and very cooperative with me taking care of them. I loved caring for them
and giving back to them a small portion of what they had given to me and they knew it! Our
relationship of parent and child was reversed but well received. My siblings were very grateful
and vocal about how just hearing my voice made them feel better. We always ended the visit or
call with “I love you”. Friends were very similar in their gratefulness for my time and attention
to them, even when there was nothing I could do but listen.
My husband on the other hand is very silent and does not want to feel like he is a “burden on me
or anyone else”. His words not mine. His initial response was that he did not want any treatment
at all. Since all of this started to unfold we have had many long conversations about what is
going on, what our options are and even sat down with our kids to complete a Durable Power of
Attorney for Healthcare in or der that we could get a handle on what his wishes ar e should
he become incapacitated. As a result of this and subsequent conversations, he now is ready to
accept the help he needs as well as undergo any treatments prescribed by the doctors!
Another thing that really helped is that we called all of his family and friends to tell them what
was going on and he received such an out-pouring of love that also helped to give him such
renewed hope. I did likewise with my family and friends, as I knew that I needed support as
well. Through all of the love and prayers, I know that we will make it.
One more time, my heart and best wishes goes out to all of you who are giving so unselfishly
of yourselves to care for someone you love! Please do not hesitate to call us with any
assistance that you may need to make help you take care of yourself and loved one! In fact

As we move from winter—albeit a California winter with warm days and
cool nights—into spring, a number of things are being planted and others
growing in the Live Oak organization. As Board Chairperson, It is my
pleasure to highlight several:
From Small Business to $1 Million Nonprofit Corporation
One might well ask how an organization with a budget over one million dollars and four branches can be a “small business,” but for much of our first 35 years we have been operating as one.
Up until a couple of years ago, we were doing our own bookkeeping, largely by hand with a
little help from Excel spreadsheets. Now we are in our second year with Health Trust who handles all of that bookkeeping for us. We spent many of the last several years dealing with outdated computer equipment and piecemeal reporting procedures that ranged from hand-modified
Excel spreadsheets to faxed reports. Now, all of our centers and the main office have modern
computers and we are in the process of streamlining our reporting processes so that they are
more accurate and take less time. Finally, we have hired an Operations Director and Vice President, as well as a new Administrative Assistant. Both these positions are to succeed Tiburcia, to
take some of the load off Colleen, and to move us to a more sustainable administrative structure.
You can tell how much Tiburcia meant to Live Oak when two people are needed to replace her!

Last December we welcomed Toni Ensunsa to our staff as Operations Director and VicePresident of Live Oak, reporting to Colleen as Executive Director and President. Toni comes to
us from over 23 years at United Way and is eager to help our organization move to the next level
in our capability to serve seniors and caregivers. We also recently welcomed Martha Montenegro to our staff as our new Administrative Assistant to both Toni and Colleen. Colleen will give
you more information about them elsewhere in this newsletter, but we are very happy to have
them on board and working with us to make Live Oak Adult Day Services all it can be.

Your Board of Directors has been busy keeping up with changes on the Board itself, at Live
Oak, and in the senior care world in general. Late last year we said goodbye to another Board
member, Janet Kraemer, who has served on the Board for over four years but who is now very
busy with her own small business. In March we welcomed Lisa Jackson, of Bateman Senior
Meals, as our newest Board member. We continue to look for Board members who are both passionate about our mission and will add new skills and viewpoints to our board. We have two
board slots open at this time. In addition to board changes and staff changes, we are currently
wrestling with the inevitable challenges and opportunities that the Affordable Care Act will
bring to adult day care.
Fundraising and Resource Development
At our December board meeting we also decided to postpone our Annual Fundraiser until Spring
of 2016 in favor of an “un-fundraiser” this year. We are partnering with Silicon Valley Gives on
May 5th as they raise money for many nonprofit organizations via their giving portal. It is a way
to spotlight the generosity of the people of this area while also helping people donate to the nonprofit organizations they care about—including Live Oak. So, mark your calendars and join the
fun! ( See page 3 for further details.)
Finally, a new web site!
If you have not already done so, please go to www.liveoakadultdaycare.org and check out our
new web site! There are information pages about each of our centers, videos, calendars, and
much more. We’re very happy with the new site and hope you will be, too.

Toni A. Ensunsa – Chief Operations Officer
As we celebrate Tiburcia N. Irving’s Retirement, we also would like to ask you to join us in welcoming Ms. Toni
Ensunsa to LIVE OAK. Ms. Ensunsa comes to us after having worked 23 years at United Way Silicon Valley as the
Director, Investments & Impact Programs. As such, Ms. Ensunsa was responsible for the development and
implementation of investment strategies designed to focus limited resources on services that provide maximum impact.
Over the years she developed relationships with key stakeholders, including corporations, government, foundations and
agency leaders. She also represented United Way in various human service collaborations, committees, and activities.
Prior to United Way Ms. Ensunsa was the Program Manager at the Montefiore Senior Center in San Francisco for three
years. While there she developed and managed weekly programmatic activities for over 200 seniors. She was part of
an interdisciplinary staff, creatively working to improve the well-being of the seniors who attended the program. Ms.
Ensunsa has a Bachelor’s degree in sociology and a Certificate in Gerontology from San Jose State University. We
certainly look forward to Ms. Ensunsa utilizing her skills and real “passion for helping seniors” as she assumes her new
position at LIVE OAK.
Live Oak’s
Lisa Jackson is currently the General Manager for Bateman Senior Meals, Santa Clara. In this position
she oversees a multi-unit contracted Food Service Organization which provides Senior Nutrition
Meals for the County of Santa Clara, City of San Jose and others. Lisa has worked in a variety of
capacities in the Food Service Industry for more than 15 years. She specializes in Event Planning as well a Catering for
both the Business and Private Sector. Prior to serving as General Manager, she worked as Director of Dietary for
Cambridge Healthcare in Southern California. Lisa has a passion for Senior Citizens and their overall quality of life.
She has volunteered for Organizations who specialize in Alzheimer’s research and helped coordinate Fundraising
Events for Senior Citizens. She is excited about joining the Board of Director’s for Live Oak and looking forward to
assisting in all areas as needed. Lisa is a Graduate of California State Long Beach with a Bachelor of Science in Food
Service Hospitality. She is also a Certified Dietary Manager, ServSafe Trainer/Proctor and holds a DSS certification.

One of my favorite lines of poetry comes from the pen of William Wordsworth, who wrote,
“The best portion of a good man’s life: his little, nameless unremembered acts of kindness
and love.” It is heartening to reflect on times in one’s life when a kind word or act done for
one or by one made all the difference. I think back to when my mom suddenly passed away
in 2001. She had been working, living alone, traveling with friends, so her death came as a
shock. I returned to work several days later, feeling unsure of my ability to make it through
the day without sobbing. My co-worker, Gloria, saw me walk in, said, “Cheryl,” in the most
gentle, sympathetic way, and enveloped me in a hug that let me know that I was safe and
supported. She may never know how much that small act of kindness helped me, and also

revealed much about her own generous character.
Another co-worker had a challenging time this past December. She had a houseful of relatives staying with her, not just for the holiday season, but also to participate in a memorial service for a beloved family
member. She was feeling such stress and sadness, when a package arrived in the mail, addressed to “The one and only
Patsy.” She had no clue what it might be, and opened it to find a beautiful handmade afghan. It turned out to be from a
former boss she hadn’t worked with in four years. Patsy wasn’t sure her boss even remembered her, but Patsy has a big
heart and is always doing small acts of kindness for our seniors here at Live Oak. Her boss’ gift arrived at a time when a
cozy afghan symbolized all the warmth and comfort she needed right at that moment.
Our volunteers at Live Oak share their talents and interests with us each day, and many also volunteer with the homeless, scrub graffiti in the neighborhoods, read to kids in local schools, and do all they can to improve the community,
often anonymously and to little fanfare. They all fit Wordsworth’s idea of a “good man’s life.” Our Live Oak seniors
have stories to share, as well. Barry tells me that he’s trying to turn over a new leaf and be a better person but, “the Lord
is still working on me.” Each day, though, I see him cheerfully greet all the other seniors and staff here, and he loves to
walk up to new people who are visiting the center to offer his hand and try to make them feel welcome. He doesn’t realize how much that eases the anxiety of a new member, but it is a true act of kindness from a good man. Mary is in her
late nineties now and fondly remembers the kindness of her fourth-grade teacher, Miss Dailey. Mary had to walk
through snow drifts on cold winter walks to her Idaho schoolhouse. Her galoshes would fill with snow and ice, chilling
her to the bone by the time she arrived. Miss Dailey would let her stand by the radiator to tame her chattering teeth and
goosebumps, while her socks and galoshes dried nearby. Mary says she will never forget that teacher’s kindness to a sensitive child, easily recalling Miss Dailey’s name after eighty-five years.
Wordsworth may say that many acts of kindness are nameless and unremembered, but I think we do well to remember
and appreciate those who gave us an encouraging word on a dark day, a hug when needed most, an act of love and gen-
erosity that we hopefully pass on to the next person we meet.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, Live Oak Adult Day Services will again participate in the online
fundraising event – Silicon Valley Gives. Silicon Valley Gives will raise money for local nonprofits
through a single online donation platform, providing a simple way to connect donors to the charitable
causes they care about most. We hope you will contribute and choose to support Live Oak Adult Day
Services. Following ar e some impor tant facts to know and help you to par ticipate:
When will it take place?
This is an online, web based fundraising event during a 24-hour period starting at midnight on
Tuesday, May 5, 2015. You can go to Live Oak Adult Day Services web site
www.liveoakadultdayservices.org to make a donation. Dur ing this 24-hour period there will be
times when your donation may be matched by corporate sponsors or other prizes may be awarded to
our organization because of your gift.
How can I participate in this event?
There is a special link set up on our web page www.liveoakadultdayservices.org that will take you to
our Silicon Valley Gives donation page. You can access this website through any web enabled
device, cell phone, iPad, or computer to make a quick, easy and secure donation. Contributions may
be made via credit or debit card only and you will need to provide a valid email address. 100% of
your online charitable gift is receipted as a charitable contribution to Razoo Foundation, who manages
the on-line donation system, and your donation will be sent to Live Oak Adult Day Services. Your tax
receipt will be e-mailed to you immediately by Razoo Foundation upon successful processing of your
gift.
Who will receive my contact information?
Live Oak Adult Day Services will receive your name and contact information, unless you choose to
make an anonymous contribution. As the host of Silicon Valley Gives, the Silicon Valley Community
Foundation will also receive your contact information. This information is solely to thank you for
participating.
Can I donate by cash or check?
In order for your gift to qualify for additional monetary prizes during Silicon Valley Gives 2015 it will

We are pleased to invite all of you to join us in celebrating the retirement of Tiburcia N. Irving. Whether, you are a client, caregiver, volunteer, vendor, community partner, funder, Advisory Council Member, Board Member or staff, we
know that you will agree she has definitely given so unselfishly of herself to our Mission. In fact, it would be remiss if
we did not all acknowledge a few of her accomplishments and the legacy that she has created during the past eight years

Absorb additional workload and deadlines imposed by new/on-going government funding sources.
Manage increased demand for services with decreased funding.
Accomplish seamless downsizing.
Absorb additional workload due to staff turn-over.
Deal with client and staff emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
Provide oversight and supervision to five, then four centers, as needed.
Hands-on assistance with production of Public Relations & Marketing
Assist with agency fundraising activities.
Interactions with Advisory Council, Board Members and general public.
Maintain highest level of professionalism at all times.
Excellent analytical, quantitative, problem solving techniques.
Though these are all wonderful accomplishments, Ms. Irving’s greatest gift to LIVE OAK was her kind, caring and loving spirit that she showered on everyone with whom she interacted. Tiburcia, we wish you nothing but the best of
health and happiness in your retirement!
