Spring Term 2015
Have a
wonderful
half term!
Dear Colleagues,
As promised last Friday, here is the information about changes to the management of the Learning
Service that will start from April 1st.
School Improvement: I am pleased to inform you that Dani Wade has been appointed as Group Manager for School Improvement. Dani
will take over the role from Barbara Breed, who has been a great colleague since joining the team in September. Barbara will continue
to work with the school improvement service as assigned adviser for a number of schools.
SEN: Ian McFee was appointed to the role of Group Manager SEN earlier this year and will now take on the role from Sandra Bingham.
Sandra will continue to work with the Learning Service on specific projects. I am very grateful to Sandra for her leadership of the SEND
reforms in Southend.
Integrated Locality Services: Some of you will be aware that Integrated Locality Services and specifically Early Help, are under review.
Cathy Braun was appointed as Interim Group Manager from December and will be continuing in this role until the review is completed
and decisions taken about next steps.
Governor Services and Music Education Hub: Alison Gellett will be taking on responsibility for Governor Services and the Music Hub,
and will continue to explore options for future delivery.
I am very sad that we will be saying farewell to Phil Warner today. Phil has been a great colleague with wisdom and clarity and I’m sure
you will all join me in wishing him all the best as he leaves us to begin a new chapter in Gozo.
Earlier this week, Headteachers representing each Southend Challenge cluster met with Robin Bevan and Mike Skelly to discuss how
grammar schools can work with primary schools to boost pupil premium intake. The discussion was around preparation, aspiration,
application and preference. Further discussion is planned to take place in the summer term - if you wish to be involved, please contact
Dani Wade.
This week I was delighted to attend our Spring Term Ofsted Celebratory Tea which was attended by nearly 100 staff from St Thomas
More High School, Alleyn Court Preparatory School, Friars Primary School and Nursery, Southend High School for Boys and the Southend
Adult Community College. It was wonderful to celebrate with such dedicated colleagues who have all achieved a ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’
outcome in their Ofsted or ISI inspection. Well done to all of you and please see page 6 for photos!
As mentioned last week, please click here to see the new ’full time prospectus for school leavers and apprentices 2015-16’ from
Southend Adult Community College. The next open event for anyone wishing to find our more is Wednesday 22nd April, 14:00 - 16:30.
This week I’m delighted to include your feedback from the SEN and Leadership Conferences. I’m so pleased that you have found them so
beneficial. Your comments included: 'Inspiration and enjoyment - Renewed energy - alternative perspectives on leadership' and 'Totally
inspirational. Really practical, strategies relevant to supporting development of children's talk.' See page 5 for more feedback.
I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and I look forward to seeing you in the Summer Term!
Kind regards,
JANE THEADOM
Head of Learning - Department for People
