Phone: (403) 821-3757 HEALING WITH NATURE EXPOSURE TO X-RAYS Donna Rae Surprising information has been released by Consumer Reports regarding the dangers of Radiation Exposure. The MRI and Ultrasound is graded as being almost no radiation. X-rays for the teeth/mouth are low if you only do one every 1-2 years. Unfortunately I did a complete scan of 18 x-rays all at once and it hurt my thyroid. Mammograms were rated as low. Thermography has no radiation. X-rays were low to medium. The biggest surprise to me was the CT scan which was rated as quite high and the PET (positron emission tomography) was equally high. If you wish to see this information online: www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2015dangersofCTScansandX-rays Here I was thinking I would love to have a CT scan just to see if everything was o.k. There are private clinics in Calgary and in the U.S. where you can do this. However, in light of the Consumer Report information, I’ll certainly rethink my curiosity and only use it if there is a real good reason to put my body through that potential abuse. For those who would like to look at past articles we have written or handouts that we use in the clinic, we are now on facebook: facebook.com/naturalhealingclinic AND many will also appear on our blog: [email protected] Donna Rae at the Natural Healing Clinic. Before freezing them, she stuffed them with a mixture of chestnut, squid, onion, and bread, and then cooked them. She noted that one ate the entire budgie, including the bones, and insisted they were "quite delicious," although she conceded they needed "a lot of spice." She hoped eventually to expand her business to include gerbils as well. Canada Buys Arizona - 1988 NPR's All Things Considered revealed that the Reagan administration had decided to sell the state of Arizona to Canada. Money from the sale would help reduce the national debt, and Canada, for its part, as the Canadian ambassador to the US explained, was eager to acquire a warm-water port "and this was the best we could do." Former governor of Arizona Bruce Babbitt, who had recently dropped out of the race for the presidency, had been offered the job of running the new province. He had accepted the position, saying it was apparent that Canada had "greater faith in my ability to lead." However, the sale was going to cause possible complications in the world of professional football, since the St. Louis Cardinals had been scheduled to move to Phoenix. But the NFL forbid teams from locating outside the country, and Phoenix was now going to become a foreign city. Road Warmers - 1989 BMW Canada ran an ad in the Globe and Mail announcing a new addition to its luxury cars: road warmers. Pivoting convex lasers mounted in front of each wheel would melt ice and snow on the road as the car was being driven. Turbo fans would then remove excess moisture from the road. According to BMW's press release, this invention would "virtually eliminate the need to clear your driveway during winter." The advertisement assured readers that road warmers would eventually become standard on all new BMWs, but until then dealers would install them on older models free of charge. Interview With President Carter 2001 Michael Enright, host of the Sunday Edition of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's radio program This Morning, interviewed former President Jimmy Carter on the air.The interview was about softwood lumber, since Carter had recently written an editorial piece in the New York Times criticizing Canada's heavily subsidized lumber industry. However, the interview took a turn for the worse when Enright began telling Carter to speed up his answers. Then Enright asked, "I think the question on everyone's mind is, how did a washed-up peanut farmer from Hicksville such as yourself get involved in such a sophisticated bilateral trade argument?" Carter seemed stunned by the insult. Finally he replied, "Excuse me? A washedup pig farmer? You're one to talk, sir. Didn't you used to be on the air five times a week?" The tone of the interview did not improve from there. Carter ended up calling Enright a "rude person" before he hung up. Enright then revealed that the interview had been fake. The Toronto comedian Ray Landry had been imper- sonating Carter's voice. The interview generated a number of angry calls from listeners who did not find the joke funny. But the next day the controversy reached even larger proportions when the Globe and Mail reported the interview as fact on its front page under the headline "Wood chips fly over lumber." The editor of the Globe and Mail later admitted he hadn't realized the interview was a hoax because it was "a fairly strange issue and a strange person to choose as a spoof." Personalized Tires - 2003 Dunlop Tires announced the introduction of personalized tire treads: "For hundreds of years people have been monogramming their clothes, and there's certainly no shortage of personalized license plates, so why shouldn't they be able to add a personal touch to their tires too?' said Ian McIntosh, General Manager of Advertising & Marketing Services, Dunlop Tires (Canada). Dunlop Ident-a-Treads are the product of more than a decade of top-secret work at the company's remote Canadian research and development facility in Serit Polnud, NWT. Researchers at the Serit Polnud lab created the new, ultra malleable and highly adhesive tires by combining sticky sap from Canadian maple trees with traditional rubber compounds. Dunlop Ident-a-Tread tires are available with initials, symbols, designs or logos engraved onto the tire treads, combining superior traction and handling with unique style." The Canadian Autobahn - 2004 BMW Canada ran an ad urging Canadians to petition their local Member of Parliament to support the creation of a Canadian Autobahn. This roadway would be an "auxiliary highway system that links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in a manner that benefits high-performance automobiles." BMW Canada revealed that it had already surveyed the country to determine where such an Autobahn might best be placed. Sleeper Cabins - 2008 Canadian airline WestJet announced it would be converting overhead compartments on its planes into sleeper cabins: WestJet (TSX:WJA) today announced that on April 1, 2008, sleeper cabins will be introduced onboard its existing fleet of 73 Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft. These sleeper cabins can be booked on all of WestJet's existing flights for a nominal incremental fee of $12... "The overhead compartment has traditionally been a place where guests have placed their carry-on baggage. Given that the overhead bins on our fleet are among the most spacious of any airline, we made the decision to offer sleeper cabins in that space." Helium-Lightened Planes- 2011 WestJet announced a "new state-ofthe-art money saving feature" aboard its flights. It was introducing "air mixed with helium in the ventilation system to lighten the weight of the aircraft." Helium is approximately 85 per cent lighter than nitrogen, which accounts for 80 per cent of the air we breathe. With a maximum takeoff weight of more than 150,000 pounds, adding helium to the air mix will provide fuel savings of approximately three to four per cent on board WestJet’s Boeing Next-Generation 737s. This will, in turn, allow WestJet to pass the savings on to its guests.” ~hoaxes.org Great, affordable weekend getaway Open on Fr iday, March 27 18 Hole Execut ive Golf Course with panoramic views Driving range Challenging course for all skill levels Competitive rates with corporate packages available Fully Licensed Clubhouse/Proshop Full Service RV park (22 sites) Facilities for special events / BBQ pit Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course 3245 10 Avenue S.W., Medicine Hat, AB 403-529-1010 Fax: 403-528-6472 www.cottonwoodcouleegolfcourse.com Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, April Fool’s Day, March 28, 2015, Page 3 Why is April 1 a day to celebrate foolishness? Holidays are celebrated for all sorts of reasons. Some honor heroes, others commemorate religious events, but April 1 stands out as the only holiday that celebrates foolishness. April Fools' Day, or All Fools Day, is an odd celebration with a strange history. What other holiday asks us to play tricks and dupe our unsuspecting friends and acquaintances? There's some uncertainty about when and where thisbizarre tradition began, but the most accepted explanation traces April Fools' Day back to 16th century France. Up until 1564, the accepted calendar was the Julian calendar, which observed the beginning of the New Year around April. According to The Oxford Companion to the Year, King Charles IX then declared that France would begin using the Gregorian calendar, which shifted New Year's Day to January 1. Not everyone accepted this shifting of dates at the same time. Some believed that the dates should not be shifted, and it was these people who became the butt of some April jokes and were mocked as fools. People sent gifts and invited them to bogus parties. Citizens in the rural parts of France were also victims of these jokes. In those days, news traveled slowly and they might not have known about Today in France, the shifting of dates people who are fooled for months or years. on April 1 are called These people also Poisson d'Avril, which literally means the April Fish. One common joke is to hook a cardboard fish to the back of a person. What a fish has to do with April Fools' Day is not clear. Some believe that the fish is tied to Jesus Christ, who was often represented as a fish in early Christian times. Others say the fish is related to the zodiac sign of Pisces, which is represented by a fish, and falls near April. It's interesting to point out that Napoleon earned the endured being made Poisson d'Avril monfun of for celebrating icker when he married the new year on the Marie-Louise of Auswrong day. tria on April 1, 1810. In ancient Rome, the festival of Hilaria was thrown to celebrate the resurrection of the god Attis. Hilaria is probably the base known as Roman Laughing Day. The question is one that many people are still asking today. The puzzle that April Fool's Day presents to cultural historians is that it was only during the eighteenth century that detailed references to it (and curiosity about it) began to appear. But at that time, the custom was already well established throughout northern Europe and was regarded as being of great antiquity. How had the tradition been adopted by so many different European cultures without provoking more comments in the written record? References to April Fool's Day can be found as early as the 1500s. However, these early references were infrequent and tended to be vague and ambiguous. Shakespeare, writing in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, made no mention of April Fool's Day, despite being, as Charles Dickens Jr. put it, a writer who "delights in fools in general." Many theories have been put forward about how the tradition began. Unfortunately, none of them are very compelling. So the origin of the "custom of making April Fools" remains as much a mystery to us as it was back in 1708. Renewal Festivals Almost every culture in the world has some kind of festival in the first months of the year to celebrate the end of winter and the return of spring. Anthropologists call these "renewal festivals." Often they involve ritualized forms of mayhem and misrule. The wearing of disguises is common. People play pranks on friends and strangers. The social order is temporarily inverted. Servants might get to order around masters, or children challenge the authority of parents and teachers. However, the disorder is always bounded within a strict timeframe, and tensions are defused with laughter and comedy. The social order is symbolically challenged, but then restored, reaffirming the stability of the society, just as the cold months of winter temporarily challenge biological life, and yet the cycle of life continues, returning with the spring. April Fool's Day has all the characteristics of a renewal festival. For one day forms of behavior that are normally not allowed (lying, deception, playing pranks) become acceptable, and yet the disorder is bounded within a strict timeframe. Traditionally, no pranks are supposed to be played after 12 o'clock noon of the first. Social hierarchies and tensions are exposed, but hostility is defused with laughter. For as long as people have been speculating about April Fool's Day, they have noticed the similarities between it and other springtime "renewal" festivals. Many historians have theorized that April Fool's Day evolved directly out of some such festival practiced in ancient times. A direct connection between April Fool's Day and any of the Roman-era festivals seems unlikely, though it is quite possible that the tradition evolved out of a medieval festival held around the time of the Vernal equinox (such as the New Year's festivals at the end of March, as discussed above). Nevertheless, there is no agreement about which festival the tradition of April Foolery developed out of. Below is a list of some of the festivals that have most frequently been suggested as its forerunners. The Saturnalia The Saturnalia was a Roman winter festival observed at the end of December. It involved dancing, drinking, and general merrymaking. People exchanged gifts, slaves were allowed to pretend that they ruled their masters, and a mock king, the Saturnalicius princeps (or Lord of Misrule), reigned for the day. By the fourth century AD the Saturnalia had transformed into a January 1 New Year's Day celebration, and many of its traditions were incorporated into the observance of Christmas. Hilaria In late March the Romans honored the resurrection of Attis, son of the Great Mother Cybele, with the Hilaria celebration. This involved rejoicing and the donning of disguises. Holi Further afield in India, there was Holi, known as the festival of color, during which street celebrants threw colored powder and water at each other. This holiday was held on the full-moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna (usually the end of February or the beginning of March). Festival of Lud Northern Europeans observed an ancient festival to honor Lud, a Celtic god of humor. There were also popular Northern European customs that made sport of the hierarchy of the Druids. Feast of Fools The medieval Festus Fatuorum (Feast of Fools) evolved out of the Saturnalia. On this day celebrants elected a Lord of Misrule and parodied church rituals, often in extremely blasphemous ways. The Church condemned the custom, but had little luck eradicating it despite frequent decrees forbidding it. It endured from the fifth century until the sixteenth century. Regional British Festivals Some festivals practiced in regions of Britain during the Middle Ages have similarities to April Fool's Day. Hoke-Tide (or Hock-Tide) was celebrated around Easter. Men and women would stop strangers of the opposite sex on the roads and tie them up, only untying them in return for money, which was to be used for a pious purpose. Various rowdy games would also be played. Shig-Shag (or Shick-Shack) Day was observed on May 20. Celebrants placed sprigs of apple oak in their hats or lapels. This was supposedly done to demonstrate loyalty to the monarchy, since Charles II was said to have hidden in an Oak Medicine Hat’s ONE STOP SHOP We have Medicine Hat’s Largest Selection of Royal Canadian Mint, Collector Coins, Currency and Supplies ◆ Fishing Tackle & Live Bait ◆ Largest Selection of Cigars and Cigarillos in Southern Alberta ◆ 12 Flavors of Slush ◆ Lotto ◆ Huge Selection of Magazines Serving the community for 30+ years OPEN 24/7 WE NEVER CLOSE! #101, 73 - 7th Street SE, Medicine Hat, AB Phone: 403.529.2900 • Fax: 403.529.2951 www.hatnewsandtobacco.ca Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com Apple tree to escape the forces of Cromwell. However, the tradition probably had roots in pagan tree-worship customs. Anyone not wearing the oak might be accosted and mocked, but only until noon. After noon the obligation to "have shig-shag" ceased. Mythological Origins Scholars in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, suspecting April Fool's Day to be of great antiquity, occasionally tried to locate its origins in ancient mythology. Such theories never found wide acceptance, but they're included here since they were so often raised in discussions of April Fool's Day. Roman Mythology In Roman mythology Pluto, the God of the Dead, abducted Proserpina and brought her to live with him in the underworld. Proserpina called out to her mother Ceres (the Goddess of grain and the harvest) for help, but Ceres, who could only hear the echo of her daughter's voice, searched in vain for Proserpina. Some scholars theorized that the fruitless search of Ceres for her daughter (commemorated during the Roman festival of Cerealia) was the mythological antecedent of the fool's errands popular on April 1st. Christian Mythology It was once popular to christianize April Fool's Day by locating its origin in Biblical traditions. For instance, the tradition was attributed to Noah's mistake of sending a dove out from the ark before the flood waters had subsided (thereby sending the dove on a fool's errand). A second story suggests that the day commemorates the time when Jesus was sent from Pilate to Herod and back again. The phrase "Sending a man from Pilate to Herod" (an old term for sending someone on a fool's errand) was often pointed to as proof of this origin theory. National Origin Theories There are theories of the origin of April Fool's Day specific to Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and France. None of these theories offers a compelling explanation of the day's origin. However, it is a sign of the cross-cultural nature of the tradition that four different countries should attempt to take credit for it. France The French origin theory (the calendarchange hypothesis) was discussed above. It alleges that the custom originated when King Charles IX reformed the calendar, moving the start of the year from April 1 to January 1. People who continued to celebrate New Years on April 1 were mocked and had pranks played on them, thus initiating the custom of April 1st foolery. This has become, worldwide, the most popular theory of the origin of April Fool's Day, despite its flaws. The French also have a theory that traces the origin of the custom back to the abundance of fish to be found in French streams and rivers during early April when the young fish had just hatched. These young fish were easy to fool with a hook and lure. Therefore, the French called them 'Poisson d'Avril' or 'April Fish.' Soon it became customary (according to this theory) to fool people on April 1, as a way of celebrating the abundance of foolish fish. The French still use the term 'Poisson d'Avril' to describe April Fool's Day pranks. They also observe the custom of giving each other chocolate fish on April 1. Great Britain British folklore links April Fool's Day to the town of Gotham, the legendary town of fools located in Nottinghamshire. According to the legend, it was traditional in the 13th century for any road that the King placed his foot upon to become public property. So when the citizens of Gotham heard that King John planned ONLY 1 LEFT 2014 Chevrolet 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 2500 LTZ 2014 GMC Terrain 2014 Chevrolet Impala Stk: 5284A; V6, auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio Was $25,900 NOW 23,999 +GST & FEE! or $175 bi-weekly $ 2014 Cadillac ATS Stk: 5276A; 20,157km, AWD, 2.0L Turbo, remote start, leather, auto, black Was $34,900 NOW 32,999 +GST & FEE! or $240 bi-weekly $ THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, April Fool’s Day, March 28, 2015, Page 5 to travel through their town, they refused him entry, not wishing to lose their main road. When the King heard this, he sent soldiers to the town. But when the soldiers arrived in Gotham, they found the town full of lunatics engaged in foolish activities such as drowning fish or attempting to cage birds in roofless fences. Their foolery was all an act, but the King fell for the ruse and declared the town too foolish to warrant punishment. Ever since then, according to legend, April Fool's Day has commemorated their trickery. Germany On April 1, 1530 a meeting of lawmakers was supposed to occur in Augsburg in order to consider various financial matters. Because of time considerations, the meeting did not take place. But numerous speculators, who had bet on the meeting occurring, lost their money and were ridiculed. This is said to have been the origin of the tradition of playing pranks on April 1. The Netherlands On April 1, 1572 Dutch rebels captured the town of Den Briel from Spanish troops led by Lord Alva. This military success eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands from Spain. A Dutch rhyme goes: "Op 1 april / Verloor Alva zijn Bril." This translates to: "On April 1st / Alva lost his 'glasses'". "Bril" means glasses in Dutch, but is also a pun on the name of the town, Den Briel. It is claimed that the tradition of pranks on April 1st arose to commemorate the victory in Den Briel and humiliation of the Spanish commander. ~hoaxes.org 2014 GMC Acadia Stk:5303A; AWD, AWD, heated front seats, remote start Was $27,900 Stk: 5287A; AWD, Leather, remote start, auto, White Was $38,900 Stk: 5274A; Only 29,306 km, 4WD, Crew Cab, diesel, leather, remote start, White Was $54,900 Stk: 5259A; 41,113km, AWD, Silver Was $31,900 NOW $25,999 or $190 bi-weekly NOW $36,999 or $268 bi-weekly NOW $53,999 or $390 bi-weekly NOW $28,999 or $211 bi-weekly 2014 Chevrolet Spark 2010 VW Tiguan 2012 Hyundai Sonata 2014 GMC Yukon SLE Stk: 140654A; Auto Was $12,900 Stk: 150280A; 84,506km, 4 motion, auto Was $17,900 Stk: 5251C; 45,875km, Leather, sunroof, aftermarket wheels Was $18,900 Stk: 5288A; 48,870km, 4WD, Leather, remote start, Bluetooth Was $38,900 NOW $11,999 or $90 bi-weekly NOW $16,999 or $165 bi-weekly NOW $16,999 or $143 bi-weekly NOW $36,999 or $268 bi-weekly 1270 Trans Canada Way SE, Medicine Hat, AB 403-527-1141 or 1-888-527-1141 • “Our Reputation is Your Guarantee” Open 24 hours at www.murraychev.ca All payments include taxes and fees - $0 down OAC • • • • Manufacturer’s Warranty 30-day/2500km Exchange 150+ Point Inspection 23-hour Roadside Assistance Page 6, THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, April Fool’s Day, March 28, 2015 Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com Memorable April Fool's Day pranks (MS) April Fool's Day is a day when people play pranks on unsuspecting friends, coworkers and family members. The history of April Fool's Day, or All Fools' Day, dates back to sixteenth century France and the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, when the Gregorian Calendar was introduced and New Year's Day was moved from April 1 to January 1. Back then, word did not spread nearly as quickly as it does now, and some people didn't find out about the date change until several years after it was initiated. As a result, some were still celebrating the New Year on April 1, and the rest of the population ridiculed those people who were not in the know. And they were sent on pranks called fool errands. These pranks were also known as poisson d'avril, which means April fish, because a young fish is easily caught. Eventually the April pranks spread outside of France into other areas of Europe, and different countries developed their own names and variations of pranks. In present day North America, April Fool's Day is celebrated with jokes and pranks, some of which have actually fooled the masses. Over the years, certain pranks have stood out as monumental April Fool's Day hoaxes. Here's a look at some of those more gravity. The condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of left-handed customers. Thousands of customers headed into Burger King to get the special burger. • It was reported in 1998 that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the mathematical value of pi from 3.14159 to the "Biblical value" of 3.0. News spread quickly over email, and the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from angry protestors. • In 1992, comedian Rich Little impersonated the voice of Richard Nixon to announce Nixon's new candidacy for president. The announcement included audio clips of Nixon delivering a candidacy speech. Listeners flooded National Public Radio's telephone lines to express outrage. • In 1977, British newspaper The Guardian published a seven-page supplement on San Serriffe, supposed to be a small republic consisting of several semi-colonshaped islands in the Indian Ocean. The two main islands were called Bell Corporation announced they had purchased the Liberty Bell and were renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Protesters called the historic park in Philadelphia where the bell was located.Taco Bell revealed the joke a few hours later. White House press secretary Mike McCurry added to the prank by announcing the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold. It would be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial. • Only one TV station broadcasted in Sweden in 1962 and did so in black and white. Only a few realized everything about the republic was named after printer's terminology. • In 1996, the Taco sands of people fell for the prank. •A Sports Illustrated journalist made up a story about a new rookie pitcher who would be playing for the Mets in 1985. The pitcher's name was Sidd Finch, and he could reportedly throw a baseball 168 mph with pinpoint accuracy. Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the "art of the pitch" in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the "great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa". Mets fans fell for the prank and the magazine was flooded with requests for more information. • In 1957, the BBC news show Panorama featured a story that a mild winter and elimination of the spaghetti weevil enabled a bumper spaghetti crop by Swiss farmers. Footage of Swiss peasants pulling spaghetti off of trees was released, and hundreds were taken in by the prank. Many called the BBC asking how they could grow a spaghetti tree for themselves. On March 31st Bickerstaff released a follow-up pamphlet announcing that his prediction had come true. Partridge was dead. Partridge (who was still very much alive) was woken on April 1st by a sexton outside his window announcing the news of his death. Washing the Lions (1857) "Please to Admit the Bearer and friend, to view the ANNUAL CEREMONY OF WASHING THE LIONS on Wednesday, April 1st, 1857." Pranksters handed out these cards on the streets of London to unsuspecting out-of-towners. The joke was that there was no lion-washing ceremony at the Tower of London. By 1857, there weren't even lions at the Tower. Versions of this prank had been regularly perpetrated since the 17th century, making it the oldest April Fool's Day joke on record. Calling Dr. Lyon (1920) The Los Angeles Times reported that the Selig Zoo, in east LA, was swamped by calls on April 1. "Messages were left on various temporarily vacated desks in town and requests were made over phones to the unwary to ring up Dr. Lyon, Mr. Bear, Mrs. Fox, Miss Wolf and the Widow Campbell. Several people even were trying to locate certains Miss Cats. The only animals which escaped attention during the day were Mr. Hippopotamus, Mrs. Rhinoceros and Miss Elephant, who are too big to answer calls, over the wire anyhow." [Los Angeles Times, Apr 4, 1920.] April Fool Experiment (1940) Radio comedian Don McNeill staged experiments in the lobby of Chicago's Merchandise Mart to test whether people would still fall for some of the oldest April fool gags. He discovered that 20 of the first 25 people who saw a bill fold lying on the floor stooped to pick it up, only to have it yanked away. In addition, McNeill set up an aquarium with a sign "Invisible Peruvian fish." He asked spectators to estimate the length of the fish. Fifty-six of the spectators turned in written estimates. Skyforest Orange Trees (1950) Residents of Skyforest, near Lake Arrowhead in Southern California, staged an elaborate prank. Twenty-five of them, led by cartoonist Frank Adams, crept out during the night and strung 50,000 oranges along a one-mile section of the scenic Rim of the World highway, making it appear that the region's pine and cedar trees had suddenly grown fruit. The oranges were leftovers from the recent National Orange Show in San Bernardino. [The Independent Record (Helena, Montana), Apr 2, 1950.] Atomic Sub in Bedford (1960) The Pennsylvania Bedford Express ran a photograph on its front page of an atomic submarine floating in the Raystown River. The paper was subsequently flooded with calls from its readers: "Was there really a sub in the river? Where is it now? Has it left yet?" The image was created by a Gazette photographer who superimposed a picture of the sub onto a picture of the river. The Raystown River is only three feet deep in the Bedford area. [Syracuse Herald-Journal, Apr 2, 1960.] Dutch Elm Disease Infects Redheads (1973) BBC Radio interviewed a "Dr. Clothier" about the government's efforts to stop the spread of Dutch Elm Disease. Dr. Clothier described some recent discoveries, such as the research of Dr. Emily Lang who had found that exposure to Dutch Elm Disease immunized people to the common cold. Unfortunately, there was a side effect. Exposure to the disease also caused red hair to turn yellow. This was attributed to a similarity between the blood count of redheads and the soil conditions in which affected trees grew. Therefore, redheads were advised to stay away from forests for the foreseeable future. Dr. Clothier was actually the comedian Spike Milligan disguising his voice. Rat Fur Coats (1980) The South African Johannesburg Star ran a story exposing an illicit ring of rat furriers. It said the police had raided a sewer where the ratters were breeding a special strain of imported Irish rats and selling the pelts as mink, seal skin, and other furs. After receiving complaints, the Star reminded its readers that the story had been run on April 1st. Stonehenge To Move (1991) The Daily Mail reported that on account of the "gradual slowing of the earth's rotation" the heel stone at Stonehenge had become out of line with the sun on Midsummer's Day. As a consequence there were plans afoot to dismantle the monument and re-assemble it "on another site of similar prominence." However, where to re-assemble it had become the source of controversy. The Ancient Society of Cosmologists wanted to re-assemble it on Mt. Snowdon. However, a Tokyo consortium had offered 484 billion yen to move it to Japan, saying it would "enhance Japan's status as the Land of the Rising Sun when re-sited on top of sacred Mount Fuji." Viagra For Hamsters (2000) The Independent reported that Florida researchers had developed a Viagra-like pill to treat sexually frustrated pets, including hamsters.Veterinarians were said to have greeted the news with derision, but the article pointed out that there are few things as sad as a pet suffering from feelings of sexual inadequacy, noting that "It's not unknown for a guinea pig to sit in its cage thinking, 'I haven't had sex for months. Am I so unattractive?'" Owners were instructed to grind the pills up and sprinkle them in the pet's food. Laying some newspaper down on the floor once the pills began to take effect was also advised. The pills were to be marketed under the brand name Feralmone. Cheeteau Perfume (2014) Cheetos, a brand of cheese-flavored, puffed cornmeal snack made by Frito-Lay, announced the launch of a perfume — Cheeteau. Taglines described it as "a wafting whiff of pungent desire," "dangerously cheesy," and "Unpasteurized. Unapologetic. Unavoidable." ~hoaxes.org Page 8, THE MEDICINE HAT SHOPPER, April Fool’s Day, March 28, 2015 Visit The Ultimate Classified Website At www.shoppergroup.com 315 W. Upon the arrival of spring, homeowners dust off their todo lists and charge ahead with renewed vigor. But before homeowners can get started on renovation projects, many must tame the existing mess that may have built up over the winter. Spring is a great time to dive into spring cleaning projects and ready a home for a season of renovation and remodeling. Getting started on spring cleaning can be a tad overwhelming. Spring cleaning a daunting process while and people have negative feelings about spring cleaning. But in spite of that initial lack of enthusiasm, respondents said they felt happy and more organized once they finished their spring cleaning. Establishing a plan and setting reachable goals can make spring cleaning a lot less daunting. • Set aside several days for spring cleaning. A long weekend is a great time to do some spring cleaning, as having consecutive days to clean will reduce the chances you grow distracted. • Make a list and purchase all of the supplies you will need. Again, this will help you stay on course, rather than going out to the store to pick up cleaners or organizational systems. • Try to set reasonable goals. Even if you hope to clean the entire house, stick to the one or two rooms that are most desperate for your attention. Divide each task into a series of steps so when you complete each step you will feel proud that you’re making progress. • Create your musical playlist. A playlist full of your favorite songs can provide some inspiration and energy to push you through the spring cleaning when your enthusiasm starts to wane. The music also may take your mind off of the work ahead and help to pass the time. • Start from the top and work downward. Follow a logical cleaning order. Begin by dusting away cobwebs and lighting fixtures. Clean light switches and walls. Empty closets and then restock them in a more organized fashion. Leave the furniture and flooring for last, as dirt and dust may accumulate on furniture and flooring as you clean other areas of the home. • Be prepared to bid adieu to some of your stuff. Have a few trash bags at the ready. Reorganize items you won’t be keeping into separate piles, with one pile for items you plan to donate and another for those items you will discard. Donate what you can and promptly put the remainder of the items at the curb for pickup. • Stay fed and hydrated. Cleaning can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Take breaks to fuel up on food and always have a refreshing beverage close by. Prepare the Lawn for Summer Blue skies, sunshine and snow falls that quickly melt all contribute to our excitement and itch to get outside and start our spring yard work. As homeowners, this is something we both look forward to and dread. With a good clean up, removing old leaves and lawn thatch, your yard is nicely prepped for the summer season. This is the time you want to dethatch your lawn, aerate and apply a spring fertilizer application. Dethatching can be done with equipment or manually. Often a power rake is used to help remove matted grass and leaves while combing out excessive thatch which then allows for better water and nutrient absorption. Aeration is removal of plugs or cores which helps in the stimulation of root development as it creates more room for the roots to reach. For hard compact soil or heavy traffic lawns (children playing or dogs) this is a yearly must. A regular scheduled fertilizer program is essential to a lush, green, healthy lawn. Healthy lawns are always more weed resistant reducing the need for blanket use of pestidices, keeping the environment beautiful and as healthy as possible. For more information on these services including responsible weed management, call Pepper’s ProGrass Services. What draft beer R you? Mallory’s ending has to be a chilling ending. Actually, the first act, she says, lulls the audience into expectations of “happy ever after”. Still enamored with that new car smell, drivers can be excused for not thinking of resale value as they put the pedal to the metal and speed off in their brand new ride. But it's never too early to start protecting a vehicle's resale value, especially if you hope to recoup as much of your vehicle investment as possible when the time comes to sell your car or trade it in for a newer model. The following are some ways motorists can protect the resale value of their vehicles from the moment the dealer tosses them the keys. · Don't overlook looks. Looks can be deceiving, but new car buyers who eventually plan to sell their vehicles should do all they can to keep the car looking as new as it did the day it was first driven off the dealership lot. Much like homeowners benefit when selling a home with curb appeal, a car that looks good gives buyers the impression that it was well taken care of. But a dirty car or one with lots of dings and dents is a red flag to preowned car buyers. · Keep a clean interior. New car owners typically maintain some strict rules with regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one wants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become with regard to allowing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehicle. Maintain a clean interior whether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. Much like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car with an interior that has seen better, cleaner days. Resale value may not be foremost on the minds of new car owners, but the earlier buyers begin to factor resale value into their car-care routines, the more they will benefit down the road. Liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less per container; must be in 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. The bag limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula/food and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces, and they don’t have to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. TSA officers may need to open them for additional screening. If in doubt, put your liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes in checked baggage. Inbound international flights You may now carry liquids more than 100 mL in your carry-on bag if: You are traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight; • they are in transparent containers; • you bought them at a duty-free shop, and • the store packed them in a secure, tamper-evident bag. If your liquids are not in a secure, tamper-evident bag, you must pack them in your checked bag. If the liquids alarm during screening, we will need to screen them further. ~www.tsa.gov DeJong’s Tours UPCOMING 2015 Tours MOOSE JAW April 13-15 & April 27-29 3 Day Trip - Cost $189.00/person dbl. Planning your career has evolved into an ongoing work in progress and an important skill to have. Career planning is the lifelong process of continually • thinking about work and create new ones. Career planning prepares you to manage change in positive and rewarding ways. Building on what you have Because career planning is an ongoing process that involves both life and work, it helps you build on what you already have, such as • your employability skills. Also known as transferable or soft skills, these are fundamental, personal and teamwork skills you need to suc- ed decisions and at all stages of your career, whether you are choosing a new career direction, going back to school or planning your retirement. Step 1: Know Yourself Identifying your vision, values, interests, skills, traits and abilities will help you decide what you want from your next career move: • If you’re choosing a new career direction, which of your core values do you want it to embody? • If you're looking for your values, needs and preferences • exploring the life, work and learning options available to you • ensuring that your work reflects your personal priorities • adjusting your plans to manage the realities of the work world Planning based on priorities and realities If you’re like most people, your priorities will change throughout your lifetime. Think about what has been important to you in the past and what might be important in the future. For example, how might your work and life change if you have children or when your children leave home? Career planning will help you ensure your plans reflect your priorities at every stage of your life. These days, you probably won’t find one type of work that will remain unchanged or continue to satisfy your priorities until you retire. Rapid shifts in technology, society and the economy will continue to eliminate some types of ceed in every workplace. No matter what type of work you choose to do, your employability skills will travel with you. • your specific skills and interests. Technical skills that you develop through work or on your own can become the basis for successful selfemployment. Talents, hobbies and recreational activities can lead you in new directions. For example, skills that you develop now as a volunteer can apply later to paid employment or even your own small business venture. • your feelings about your work and life. If you are bored with your job or it looks like the work you’re doing now might not have much of a future, career planning can help you figure out how and when to make changes. If you’re passionate about one of your interests or hobbies, career planning could help you turn it into a small business. Using the four career planning steps The four career planning steps are useful for all kinds of career-relat- new challenges at work, which of your skills or interests could help you develop and advance? • If you’re considering going back to school, which type of program would make the most of your positive traits? Step 2: Explore Options Explore your options, discover new ones and gather infor- mation about them. What choices do you have? What does each alternative involve? • If you’re choosing a career direction, find out about the occupations that interest you and then talk to people in those fields. Can you get direct experience by volunteering, working parttime or job shadowing? Look for related possibilities while you explore the ones you have already identified. • If you’re considering going back to school, talk to people in the occupations that interest you. Ask them how they acquired the skills and knowledge they need and which training options are most respected by employers. Step 3: Get Ready Evaluate your options and decide which ones are best for you at this stage of your life. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative? Consider the challenges you may face and how you can handle them. Step 4: Take Action Develop a plan to make your option a reality. Identify the shortterm and long-term steps you need to take and tie them to specific dates. Identify things you can do to stay motivated. Then, take the steps!
