Sam is an 8-year resident who loves to write
about life in Sun City Huntley. This column
contains tidbits of information from
various topics and experiences including,
dining out, entertainment, reader recipes,
and more. Sam will frequent local eating
establishments, usually joined by friends
and neighbors. He may write about
movies, concerts, a travel experience, or
various other forms of entertainment.
“Some Like it Hot” at Famous Dave’s!
The Dining Out Club resumed its monthly restaurant
outings with a return to Famous Dave’s Barbeque (FDB) in
Algonquin. Over 50 Sun City members of the club enjoyed
the unique features of FDB. In most restaurants, they serve
a standard sauce, but not so at FDB. You get to choose the
barbeque sauce that meets your personal taste from Rich
& Sassy® to Sweet & Zesty® to Pineapple Rage®. These
original sauces let you create your own BBQ experience.
The full slab of ribs is available in either baby backs or St.
Louis style.
In addition to their famous ribs, they offer steaks, chicken,
soup, sandwiches, and gluten-free options on their
extensive menu. A freshly baked corn muffin is included
with two sides when ordering an entree. The sides include
Creamy Coleslaw, Cheesy Mac and Cheese, Sweet Corn,
Potato Salad, Garlic Red Skin Mashed Potatoes, Grilled
Pineapple Steaks and Dunkin Apples, and Wilbur Beans.
Two diners at our table ordered salmon which they said
melted in their mouths.
Did I mention the bar? They have a full bar with a variety of
beers on tap and in bottles along with a full array of cocktails.
And don’t forget dessert, like the one we overdosed on, the
Down Home Banana Pudding, Hot Fudge Kahlua Brownie
Sundae, or Famous Dave’s Bread Pudding. It took two of
us to finish a large goblet filled with bananas, pudding, and
whipped cream.
In reading the comments written by the guests on the ratings
scorecard (see on another page), almost unanimously the
most mentioned comment was regarding service. FDB
received one of the highest ratings ever by our reviewers.
Our diners complimented the servers on their knowledge
of the menu and their prompt, friendly service. FDB also

sent everyone home with a bottle of their BBQ sauce along
with coupons for a future visit.
Famous Dave’s combines excellent food quality, friendly
and efficient service, with reasonable prices. You won’t be
overspending at FDB; their costs are comparable to most
area restaurants. Finally, FDB offers a take-out menu,
phone-ahead service and full catering. Visit their website
for the complete skinny on all they offer. Manager Ed and
his staff knock themselves out to please their guests.

Seeing that put joy into what had started as a rainy,
dreary morning of nothing but the same ol’.
Since the bird sighting, I’ve been inspired. The weather
is becoming more like Springtime and my spirit feels a
re-awakening. I want to spread my wings and fly with the
wind. Like the early robins, it is my season to migrate
into the land of new opportunities and build a new nest
with whatever I have and trust good timing to put me in
line to find the best worms.
The Sunflower Garden Club presents its annual plant
sale on Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 10 am to 1 pm at
the Fountain View Pavilion. We are offering a colorful It’s time to spring forward…come on and join me as I

Loco Gringo
By: Jerry Goldberg
After a light rain on Friday, I spotted my first Robin of the
season. My heart rejoiced with anticipation of Spring.
The bird lingered in the grass only a short while before
taking flight into the next door neighbor’s yard and
eventually, beyond my line of vision.
I wondered if it was searching for a yummy worm or a
scrumptious caterpillar, or was it pursuing scrap papers
and twigs to build a nest? I’ve always heard the old
saying that the “early bird gets the worm”, or finds the
best twigs, whatever the case may be.
The setting for this story is Ixtapa, Mexico on one of our
infrequent vacations. I was told to be very careful of the
treacherous undertow but daredevil that I am, I paid no
heed to this.
My wife,Gloria, was having a difficult time keeping pace
with me as I strode defiantly, deeper and deeper into
the ocean. I say “strode” because swimming is not my
best sport.
I noticed a group of Mexican youths eyeing me carefully,
as a wave hit me in the chest, flipped me over in a 180

accomplishments. For example, the diets I get on that
eventually fail, the workouts I have to cut short ’cuz I’m Gloria was standing there with her mouth open in shock

and even though I don’t understand a word of Spanish I
understood perfectly.
Timing is important.
Can I help it if I’m the one that doesn’t make it across
the intersection when the light turns red and I end up
having to sit through another cycle of colors? Is it my
fault that someone else bought the coolest sweater in
the universe before I got to the sale? Am I to blame for
waiting until tomorrow to fill up the gas tank and then
discover the price catapulted another 20 cents higher?
Am I cursed because I forgot to buy milk at the grocery
store and this morning I had to eat my cereal dry?
Timing is important.
The pockets of my bathing suit had been turned inside
out and dollar bills were floating all over the water. I
dove for my room card, which had vanished beneath
the surface of the water. The Mexicans all dove for the
bills.
I managed to salvage my room card and half of the
loose bills I had in my pocket. The Mexican kids were
just shaking their head at what had just happened.
I made it to the shore and told Gloria never to go in
the water...it’s dangerous. Oh yes, one more valuable
lesson I learned...always carry a waterproof wallet.
A clock ticks for every living thing on the planet. This
time, Destiny put me at the right place, at the right time,
enabling me to spot a beautiful robin in my backyard.

dollars spent on the Chicago election campaigns than
there were on any local elections.
Low Candidate Turnout
The Chicago election campaign was “not heated” just
intense. As Jimmy Durante philosophized frequently,
“May the winner emerge victorious”, and they did.
“Far more dollars” is a simple way to describe the millions
of dollars that were spent on the Chicago elections.
Compare that with “No dollars were spent” on almost all
of the local elections. This is not to characterize the local
candidates as “cheap” or “frugal”, but more accurately
the candidates were motivated by common sense not
to spend any money because in all but one race the
candidates had no competition.
A resident would have to have a special interest in any of
the local elections to even be aware of which municipal
groups were about to conduct elections to determine
who will serve on its Board or on whatever the legal
structure was.
The elections occurred after this publication’s deadline,
but just as an FYI, consider the following information.
The Kane County Clerk’s website provided election lists,
positions to be filled and names of candidates for each
election.

It Was A Dream
The Perfect Solution
A year before I was recruited by the Nigerian Government
as Contract Education Officer in 1975, I dreamed that I
was living alone in a bungalow-type house situated in a
small village in the middle of the jungle. A narrow lane
led from my house to the main college campus on the
other side of the village.
The other night, I was watching the Chicago Bulls game,
and one of the many commercials actually struck such a
chord, I immediately ran for a pen before the telephone
number had faded away. Actually, my fears wound up
groundless because the number was repeated so many
times, I said out loud: “ENOUGH ALREADY!”
There was a tall fire tree on my front lawn, full of bright
red blooms. A high mountain loomed behind the hill
where my house stood. My nearest neighbor was
partly hidden by weeping willow trees, half a mile away.
The winding valley road, the tall trees lining it, the wild
flowers all around the hill and the river below provided
a breathtaking panorama. It was a beautiful setting but
strange and formidable. I was feeling very lonely and
isolated.
They were selling a battery-operated hair trimmer that
did everything but trim your front lawn. Suddenly, I felt I
had to have it because my eyebrows can get very unruly
when I prolong my barber shop visit. The forest in my
ears needs constant plucking and don’t even mention
my nose. This was the perfect solution.
By: Lydia B. Wade
By: Jerry Goldberg
The dream vanished from my memory until I arrived
in Nigeria a year later with more than a hundred
experienced teachers of various fields from different
towns and cities in the Philippines. We were deployed
to different areas in the north, (where trouble is now
with Boko Haram), in the south, east and west of the
country. I was assigned in the northeast with eight other
colleagues, to a place not too far from Gombe, a town
now occupied by Boko Haram. Our assignment was to
teach in Teacher Training Colleges located in remote
villages. We were separated from one another by two
hundred or so kilometers apart.
To my surprise, I found myself in a somewhat familiar
surroundings, a college campus founded by early British
missionaries, situated in a sparsely populated, remote
village in the middle of the wilderness. The location of
my house and the scenery were exactly the same as
in my dream ! It was inconceivable, unbelievable that I
would have a future glimpse of what was to come. But it
happened. To this day, I still marvel at how things could
happen exactly as what I had dreamed about.

An automated voice answered the phone. For $15
and shipping, my troubles would soon be over. First,
however, I had to spell my name, address and zip code.
I had to repeat my address over and over because
when she repeated my address, it sounded like a Greek
island. I repeated it so many times, even I had to begin
second-guessing myself.
Covering the receiver, I woke up Gloria with my urgent
question:
“Glor, quick! What’s our address?”
That sure got her upright in a hurry.
“Oh, no,” she exclaimed, her face a picture of shock and
concern. “You’ve lost your mind!”
I quickly assured her it was only temporary insanity, as
I listened for my next prompt. In the end, however, I
was confronted with so many options and choices and
prompts for one thing or another, I just hung up and
went back to the Bulls game as I felt a new hair sprout
in my ear.
My son later revealed that he owns a battery-operated
hair trimmer, though he didn’t know the brand. He said
these things are so overrated, he doesn’t even use
his regularly. More importantly, though, his was store

Start a Home Based Business
from a Hobby You Enjoy
By: Max
If you have a hobby that you think could be turned into a
full-time business venture, you should consider making the
transition. Working from home doing something you enjoy is
one of the greatest feelings you can have. Because we all need
to earn a living, finding a job that we can be passionate about
in addition to earning a steady income is a dream for most.
But if you research your idea, create a business plan, and work
within your means, this dream can come true.
When most people think about starting their own business,
they usually come up with a million reasons why the business
would fail. They may not even have an idea about what they
want to sell or provide. If you already have an idea, you are
ahead of most people. The next step is research to determine
if there is a market for your product and if you will be able
to sell it quickly and easily. Most research can be conducted
at home on your computer. While you may need to visit the
library, retail stores, and other outlets, you can rely on your
computer to give you a lot of useful information.
Finding a market for your product may be difficult depending
on what it is. But you may also find many avenues including
opening your own store, selling your product at trade shows,
flea markets, or online, or you may find others who are looking
for products like yours and who may want to go into business
with you. There are many possibilities. If you are interested in
selling your product online, you can create a website or sell
your product on online auction sites. The Internet has created
many opportunities for those who want to sell a product, but
who don’t want to pay for retail space each month.
Creating a business plan is essential especially when you
have a certain budget or you aren’t sure how successful your
business will be. A business plan is one or two pages that
include your budget, your accomplishments, and any other
considerations you may need to make before creating and
selling your product. You can change this plan at any time if it
becomes impractical or if you exceed expectations.
Since most people have to create a budget when starting their
own businesses, being realistic about the cost of materials,
shipping, and advertising and marketing is important. If you
don’t estimate enough, then you may fall short, so be sure to
create a budget that fits your needs. As your business grows,
you can adjust your budget and start generating a profit. This
is when your will see the results of all your hard work.
Hobbies that Pay
By: Max
Many people have hobbies. Retirees and housewives often
have hobbies to help keep them occupied during moments of
relaxation or boredom. But not many people realize that you
can make money from most hobbies. By taking your hobbies
and turning them into cash at flea markets and swap meets,
you can easily earn a modest income while having fun.
Crocheting is one of the highest paying hobbies. Crochet
thread is often inexpensive while still being durable, washable,
and delicate in appearance. Crocheted table cloths, curtains,
and bedspreads can be completed within a month by most
experts in the craft, and can be sold for hundreds of dollars
depending on size and pattern.
Other home decoration hobbies like wreath making, basket
weaving, or wood working can also be turned into easy
income. Quilting is also a great hobby to make money from.
Since fewer and fewer people know how to quilt, a hand made
quilt is hard to come by, and therefore valuable. You can often
make at least a fifty percent profit on your completed quilts.
Baby quilts are also very popular.
Sewing and knitting of any kind can be very profitable hobbies.
Knit sweaters, baby hats, booties, mittens, and other items can
be big sellers at flea markets and swap meets. Clothing items
can also be sold at these locations very easily. Well made
home sewn clothing is often stronger than the cheap clothes
that you can get at the local department store, but can be sold
for the same price or less while still earning the seamstress
quite a bit of money. Wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses,
and prom dresses can be huge income earners for the expert
seamstress.
One of the best hobbies to make money from is gift baskets.
Decorating jars and other containers using appliqué, ribbons,
and paint can be combined with the creative mixture of
perfumes, bath oils, and bubble baths to make very pretty,
country style gift baskets. These bath baskets are great for
gifts all season round, including mother’s day, birthdays, and
Christmas, making them a very profitable hobby.
Gardening is also one of the more profitable hobbies. If you
like to garden but don’t really need everything you plant, you
can take the left over to a farmer’s market. You can also simply
set up a stand on the side of the road in some communities.
Fresh produce is a great commodity, and can earn you a hefty
income in the spring.

Pickleball is Catching On
The game got its start back in 1965, in Bainbridge
Island, just a short ferry ride away from Seattle, WA.
Congressmen Joel Pritchard, William Bell and Barney
McCallum came home from a game of golf one day to
find their kids bored and restless. They set out to create
a game that would engage them through the lazy days
of summer. They handed the kids table tennis paddles
and a wiffle ball, and lowered the net on their badminton
court. Over a short time, the rules evolved to resemble
today’s game.

attention of seniors across the nation.

Companionship or Love Affair?
By: Max
A marriage is like any relationship and has its good and
bad times, its agreements and disagreements. No one
can expect everything to be wonderful at every minute
of the day when two people from different backgrounds
and with different feelings and expectations live together.
Some marriages have serious problems that must be
resolved through concentrated effort or even therapy,
but most marriages just become boring over time.
When considering problems in a marriage, it is critical
to think about what exactly is causing the conflict
or uneasiness before taking any action. In many

In my quest to find the perfect rock I stumbled on an
ideal specimen last week and I went back the following
day with Gloria to get another gander. Glor flipped when
she saw it and thought it was perfect; not too large and
not too small and it was striking. It’s called,”Obsidian”

Everyone in any kind of personal relationship wants
passion and romance. However, there are some things
about romance that people don’t understand. The most
common difficulty in creating romance is that people
don’t know how to accomplish it. Sometime, they are
stuck in societal classifications, and their partners
can’t appreciate them for their unique qualities. As a
result, people often just give up on finding romance.
We had Eric, the young boy who handles most of the
outside garden stuff weigh it on the scale. At 29 cents a
pound it came to 231 pounds and between the two of
us we lifted it and put it on the scale. I told Eric to keep
his toe off the scale. The only thing that bothered me
was that the rock had a scoring mark down the center
as if someone had intended to crack it in half and then
changed their mind.
Today, when we are accustomed to convenience and
having everything happen at the touch of a button,
making an effort to create romance seems too difficult.
However, you can take some really old-fashioned
ideas about romance and make them work in our
modern world. Romance in the 21st century can be
alive with innovative ideas, passion, and creativity.
Romance refers to the way you express your love

Important Photography Principles
By: Max
A camera is actually a sensitive machine, which will
follow your command and you will be able to take the
picture exactly the way you want it. Of course, there are
quite a few things that you need to keep in mind before
you push the camera button. Here is an insight into
certain elements that needs to be taken into account
when you are going for that classic picture!
Creativity Using Camera Controls
Mastery over camera controls is necessary. You just
cannot do without that. You need to first read the
guidebook that most camera manufacturing companies
provide with the camera. You need to know the various
modes your camera offers from macro to panoramic,
back lighting and others.
If you have bought a DSLR then there are several
elements that you will have to master and understand to
bring out the best composition. A serious digital camera
has the ability to provide you with a creative control over
the images that you shoot. A digital camera can do this
by allowing you the luxury to control both motion and
light in all your photographs and at the same time it can
demarcate between sharpness and softness. Most of
the commonly available consumer digital cameras are
completely automatic and hence you will not have to
make too many adjustments. But high-end cameras like
the DSLR offer the ability to work upon a wider range of
controls. So before, you can even think of clicking away
to glory; check the automatic exposure as well as the
focusing systems, which is a key to achieving a good
composition.
The Automatic Mode
Most of the digital cameras work on an automatic
mode. The automatic mode can set the focus as well as
the exposure for you and all you have to do is click the
subject. The automatic mode will help you in situations
where you do not have the luxury of changing lenses or
manually focusing especially when you are taking shot
of a moving subject. But in spite of the automatic mode,
you should choose a sub-mode like the night mode for
taking pictures at night, so that according to the submode the camera can adjust itself.
Some Key Areas
Some of the key areas that most amateurs miss are too
basic to be noticed and yet hold a lot of importance.
For instance, you should always check in advance
if the battery is full or not. You should not be in a
situation where you get a great opportunity for a classic
composition and the camera battery dies. Check all the
minute things and then turn your camera on and set it
to the automatic mode. Most digital cameras have an
icon that says Auto mode.
Page 22
Another key area is lighting, which is something that
you will need to understand and feel to become a
professional photographer. Here are some of the most
important lighting conditions that assist photography
composition:
Backlighting: This kind of lighting comes from behind the
subject. If you are unable to control the requirement of
backlighting then it can turn your photography session
into a disaster. Most of your pictures will either be
over-exposed or burnt. The best way to take pictures
with high amount of backlight like the sun behind your
subject is by using a fill-flash.
Diffused lighting: As you will learn on the way that
sometimes whether the lighting is through an artificial
source or a natural source, it can be quite harsh. When
the lighting is harsh, you will need to soften it and try to
minimize the contrast. Normally, it is advised not to take
pictures in such a lighting condition. It is extensively
encountered in landscape or nature photography and
the best you can do is come back at a different time
when the lighting conditions are better.
Framing
This is an important aspect and you need to frame
your subject before you can push the camera button
to take the picture. The automatic mode gives you a
well-prepared platform but if you are unable to frame
the primary subject then the final outcome will not be
to your liking. Images can become hazy, blur or even
distorted. You can frame the subject by using the
viewfinder or the LCD monitor. Digital cameras have
the zoom view also. So if you need to bring the subject
closer then press the optical zoom or digital zoom as
necessary. Once all your elements are in place, then go
ahead and click the picture.
There will be times when you might not be satisfied
with the outcome in spite of having framed the subject
and following the guidelines. Do not be disheartened!
The best way to move ahead is by experimenting with
controls and through improvisations!
