Tamil Nadu Civic Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has asked the
Chennai Corporation to procure rice for subsidized canteens at the
prevailing market price of Rs. 19.85 per kilogram.
The government welfare scheme has so far been successful as the
civic body had been buying rice at Rs. 1 per kilogram from TNCSC.
TNCSC is now asking the Corporation to pay market rates for rice
procured for these canteens, that too with retrospective effect for the
past two years. The procurement of rice at market rates is likely to
affect the popular welfare scheme that covers several outlets across
the city.
An official of the Corporation said these canteens require 500
tonnes a month. Procurement of rice at market rates will increase the
expenses by Rs.12-crore every year.
These canteens offer idli at Rs. 1 each, a plate of chapati at Rs. 3,
sambar rice, pongal, lemon rice and karuveppilai rice at Rs. 5 and curd
rice at Rs. 3 a plate.
The additional canteens proposed to be commissioned are also
likely to be delayed in case the Corporation is required to procure rice
at market rates.

Steps taken by Traffic Police in West Mogappair
laudable
Sir, Pedestrians, especially senior citizens, are relieved as traffic
police set up parking lots in the open spaces along First Avenue, West
Mogappair and parts of J. J. Nagar last week.
The new initiative is part of the efforts taken by the Thirumangalam
Traffic Police to not only regulate the traffic but also to monitor the
safety of pedestrians and movement of vehicles. The statutory
measures were aimed to streamline the traffic movement in the
locality.
New traffic signals were installed at important stretches, including
First Avenue in Nolambur, and the stretches within 100 meters of
traffic signals have been made ‘no parking zones’.
We, the residents, also thank E. Balakrishnan (Inspector—Traffic
Regulation, Tirumangalam Police) for regularly monitoring the stretch

Passengers’ Association seeks

successfully administrated a shelter for homeless people in
Thattankulam near Purasawalkam. Based on the performance, Chennai Corporation has selected ICWO to
administrate one more shelter for the homeless people in
Chennai. According to A.J. Hariharan, Secretary, ICWO, the
new shelter is expected to accommodate around 30 homeless

Mogappair, in the past month.
A dog which had climbed on
to the sunshade of the third
floor of a building of Rohini
Flats on April 1could not make
its way back. It was rescued
at around noon on that day.
Another dog that had fallen
into a 30-foot deep well on Z
Block 5th Street, 13th Main
Road, Anna Nagar, was
rescued on March 17.
In a similar incident,
another dog that had fallen
into a well in an empty plot on
5th Street, D Sector, Anna
Nagar Western Extension,
was rescued on March 14.
A cat that had fallen into a
dry well in Kalaivanar Colony,
Ambattur Estate Road,
Tirumangalam, was rescued
without any injuries, with the
help of a ladder last week.
In the second incident,
another cat which had fallen
into a sump filled with water
on ORI Salai, Mogappair, was

PIL filed to reconstruct median on 3rd Avenue

demolition of the reconstructed
median on 3rd Avenue, East
Anna Nagar, at its junction
with 5th Main Road, H Block, a
resident filed a public interest
litigation (PIL) in Madras
High Court last week.
The hearing of the PIL has
been adjourned to April 24.
According to the residents of
E and H Blocks, the center
median was developed for the
smooth flow traffic on this bus
route road in 2010.
It was demolished in the
beginning of last year to
facilitate the massive drain
work. When the drain work
came to an end, contractors
started reconstructing the
median in the stretch.
When they were almost
finished, business firms on 3rd
Avenue influenced the contractors to demolish the
structure with political
support for personal gain,
added the residents.

this reporter that the residents
here are determined and they
will not budge even a bit
until the median is reconstructed.
“We, the residents of 5th Main
Road, Anna Nagar, especially
senior citizens, face a lot

uphill task and motorists
never bother to slow down even
after seeing pedestrians
crossing the road,” S. Veeraraghavan (88) lamented.
“We all will fight for justice,”
the residents added.

junction leads to frequent
traffic jams on 3rd Avenue
during peak hours. Police

posted at the junction to
