The sermon was given by the Uniting Church minister, Reverend
Sue Ellis, in the absence of an Anglican minister.
It was followed by a time of fellowship and food over a BBQ lunch.

Introducing. .
Lolu & Funmi Tayo & Family
Nigeria
United Kingdom
Botswana
T
he journey began when Lolu moved
from Nigeria to Botswana in 2005,
and then to the UK in 2008. His wife,
Funmi joined him in 2006. Lolu worked
as a pharmacist in Lloyds Pharmacy in
Chesterfield, which is one of the largest
pharmacy businesses in the UK. They
decided to move to Australia, and in August
2013 Funmi and the children travelled to
Ballarat while Lolu stayed and kept working
in the UK. It was up to Funmi to decide if
Australia should become their home. As
soon as she arrived she thought “We will
have to go back to the UK”. Without a job,
missing friends, and trying to cope with the
cultural differences was concerning. The
food was not the same, and travel to get
home to Nigeria was even more difficult
from Australia. She kept an open mind and
after mixing with people there and with the
support of friends already living in Ballarat
she agreed to stay. Lolu joined the family in
December.
Adelaide
Cummins
Berri
Ballarat
on Facebook, Lolu applied and started
work in Berri in March 2014. He commuted
from there each weekend while the
family remained in Adelaide. Meanwhile,
Funmi was studying two courses. She has
completed Certificate 4 in Disability Care,
and her study in Bachelor of Business
Information Systems will now lapse
because of distance from workshops and
tutorials required as part of the subject.
The travel from Berri to Adelaide and
separation from family meant they needed
to rethink arrangements, so Lolu resigned
from Berri and started employment in
Adelaide. The new job was temporary so
when he was contacted about the job in
Cummins, and offered the opportunity of a
permanent job, they agreed to move to Eyre
Peninsula. Lolu and Funmi believe that
Cummins is the right place for them at this
point in time, and they plan to stay. Funmi’s
first impression of Cummins was how small
the town is, with not many people around.
However, she feels the value of Cummins
is the friendly people, and says “They are
happy, and will interact and speak to you,
and are very welcoming”. Even though
the Tayo family has come from a different
background, the people “don’t make us feel
left out”! The children are happy living here,
and Toyin’s comment was “the People are
very good: the teachers at the school are
even good!” Lolu believes their journey
so far was meant to happen as it has, and
although significant changes have occurred
they are thankful and feel blessed.
Cummins welcomes Lolu and Funmi Tayo
and their children Toyin, Seun and Dara.
Lolu and Funmi had read about Adelaide
when in the UK. Other friends they knew,
who were living in Tasmania, had also
decided to move to Adelaide at the time
they also decided to move to South
Australia. This meant they knew someone
when they arrived at Brahma Lodge in
December 2013.
They had the conviction that Adelaide
was the place to go to live. Job interviews
around Christmas 2013 showed Lolu was
prepared to do any work to support his
family. In January 2014 they rented a house
in Adelaide and the family moved from
Ballarat to live. Time was spent getting
fully registered to work as a pharmacist
in Australia, even after many years’ work
in the UK. Finally, after seeing a vacancy

Science PUB
Monday the 23rd of March saw the first Science Pub held at the Cummins Hotel. A small
but enthusiastic group met and talked science over drinks and food. Topics of conversation
ranged from climate palaeontology of the East MacDonnell Ranges to DNA sequencing
techniques and many things in between. Next month we’ll be ‘rocking’ the pub (sorry bad
pun) with a Geology theme. Emma Addinsall will talk about her honours project in climate
palaeontology and it’d be great if others would bring something Geology related.
We’d love to see more science tragics so please join us on Monday 20th April at 7:30pm
at the Cummins Pub – if Mondays don’t suit you please contact Kellie or Kirsty as we’re
pretty flexible.

Re-thinking Child,
Youth and Family Ministry in Modern Australia
25—26 April 2015
Uniting Church Hall
68-72 Bruce Terrace, Cummins SA
For many congregations and families, sharing the Christian faith with children and youth is an area of struggle or
challenge. Culture and society has changed so much, raising many new questions and issues and pressures. We invite you to
join us in rethinking child, youth and family ministry for a new time and a new age.
 What does it mean to form faith in children and youth?
 What seems to work best and why?
 How can we partner with and support Christian families today?
 How can we bring the Good News of Jesus to unchurched children, youth and families?
“Grow Ministries” invites you to join the conversation. It’s about hope, new life, and the future we have together in Christ.

Helping Cummins Residents to
“Take Charge of their Life”
Often when we think about mental health we instantly
think of mental illness but creating a mentally fit EP is
the vision for local resident, Kirsty Traeger. While she
never imagined people holding hands and skipping
down the main street of Cummins, she hoped that by
sharing her experience with mental illness and her focus
of becoming mentally fit, that perhaps she could help
just one person.
This dream started to become a reality last year with the
success of the “Life’s a Circus” Gala Dinner that raised
$24,000 in partnership with the Cummins and Port
Lincoln Bendigo Banks, Medicare Local, West Coast Youth
and Community Support and local business owners. It’s
not every day that you can turn up to an event wearing
a full length gown with a clown nose, being greeted by a
red carpet and dancing acrobats!
A free take charge of your life course was delivered in
Cummins over the past month, as a direct result of this
fundraising and sponsorship. The course filled up, and
the feedback has been incredibly positive. One local
resident, Mardi Green, has even created a hashtag
#theyearofthemardi, as she has made the decision to put
herself first after feeling empowered by the course.
It was fantastic to see a mix of people of all ages and
both men and women, keen to learn skills to become
mentally fit.
The course is fun, free, full of activities, and all
participants will receive a certificate upon completion,
not to mention lifelong skills to try and prevent mental
illness and to live happier and healthier lives.
If you would like to “take charge of your life” or sign up
to the mailing list, please email kirsty.arnold88@gmail.
com or like our facebook page “Eyre Peninsula Mental
Wellbeing Program”.
A huge thanks must go out to Bendigo Bank Cummins for
making this happen and everyone who attended.
“A big THANKYOU to Kirsty Traeger and Sue Berry for
presenting the "Take Charge of Your Life" workshop,
it's been AMAZING!! I highly recommend it!!”

World Day
of Prayer:
The Bahamas
Cummins Uniting Church hosted this year’s World Day of
Prayer. The Country studied was The Bahamas, so as the 40
people who gathered to share in the service arrived, they
were handed a hibiscus which followed into the theme of a
sea scene. The Alter was decorated with shells, sea colored
drapes, bougainvillea, candles, straw hats, and tropical
fruits.
Petrea Glover, the capable Leader for the service led in
the Guest Speaker, Uniting Minister Rev Sue Ellis, (suitably
dressed in a brightly colored blouse), scattering shells, pot
pouri and colored stones around the alter.
The Call to Worship to commence the service were the Anglican Ladies, followed by Psalm of Praise, when the Catholic
Ladies took part.
Leonie Phelps read the bible reading John 13 verses 1-17.
(Leonie was also responsible for the power point presentation). The Lutheran Ladies led the Prayers of Confession,
followed by Rev. Sue Ellis, who gave a deeply meaningful
message, which was really well received.
The Uniting Church members then led in the Prayer of
Intercession.
The Peace of Christ was then shared, followed by the collection, where $273.15 was collected, which will be forwarded
to the World Day of Prayer Committee, to be then sent to the
Bahamas.
A person from each church then led the Prayer of Thanksgiving. Petrea asked the ladies from the Catholic Church to
come forward indicating that they have accepted the role of
coordinating the service for 2016. The service closed with a
Blessing then Julie Maxwell who had played the keyboard
for the music through the service played the closing Hymn.
The friendly gathering, stayed to share morning tea and
discussion already on next years Service – the Country being
Cuba.
