I was a teenage yo-yo dieter. I’d eat my feelings and then go on stupid
diets. After my parents died, I thought, “I’m going to do everything I can
to save my life and my siblings’ lives.” I wanted to learn about health.
My next book will be a love story. Two months into my relationship
with my husband Michael Brown, he was diagnosed with cancer. I said,
“Failure is not an option.” He’s been in remission for 11 years.
I did a radio segment on sensitive bladder, and I said, “Why is
nobody talking about this? I have a big mouth, so I will!” I don’t want this
issue to stop anyone from dancing or exercising.
I remember virtually every day of my life in detail, because I was
born with something called highly superior autobiographical memory.
By comparison, most people can only remember 8 to 11 events from each
year of their lives. I’m also able to retain nearly everything I read. The
cop played by Poppy Montgomery on TV’s Unforgettable has the type of
memory I do, so I’m a consultant on the show.
Your memory is a muscle you have to exercise. Each day, take a
photo on your smartphone that represents the theme of your day. At the end

I believe everyone should eat half an avocado every day. When
the 3 o’clock slump hits, I eat a big salad with spinach, red onion and avocado.

we text a lot. My youngest son called yesterday and said, “I can’t wait to

spring is starting earlier than it used to, while
plants are producing more symptom-triggering
pollen. “So you have more pollen, more
powerful pollen and pollen that lasts for a longer
time,” says Clifford Bassett, MD, fellow of the
American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and
Immunology (AAAAI) and medical director of
Allergy & Asthma Care of New York.
Fortunately, doctors are cultivating different
methods for treating allergies and minimizing
their unpleasant symptoms—from new
technologies to ancient practices. Here, three that
can help take the sniffles out of your springtime.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy exposes the immune system
to tiny amounts of the thing that you’re allergic
to in the form of shots (which have been
around for years) or oral drops, a new method
of treatment. Over time, that exposure teaches
your immune system to stop seeing allergens as
threatening invaders—and in turn, tamp down

Morning Make-Ahead
This heart-healthy take on a Southern classic from Soul
Food Love, by Alice Randall and daughter Caroline, can be
assembled the night before. It’s a no-fuss centerpiece for a
family brunch. Look for refrigerated egg whites in cartons from
brands such as Eggland’s Best and Egg Beaters.
Breakfast Casserole
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. crushed red pepper ﬂakes
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. salt
½ tbsp. ground nutmeg
1 lb. ground turkey
1 tbsp. olive oil
6 large leeks, white and light
green parts, chopped
2 cups 2% low-fat,
small curd cottage cheese
4 oz. (½ cup) goat cheese
4 cups tightly packed chopped
fresh spinach
1 pint egg whites, lightly beaten
1. In a large bowl, combine the ﬁrst 5 ingredients (through
nutmeg). Add the turkey and mix well.
2. Place olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the
turkey mixture and cook until no longer pink, about 7 minutes.
Add the leeks and cook for another minute; then add cheeses.
Stir over low heat until the goat cheese just begins to melt.
3. Pour the turkey mixture into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
Spread the spinach on top, and then pour in the egg whites,
making sure they are distributed evenly. Cover and refrigerate
for at least 1 hour, or overnight.
4. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the casserole 50-60 minutes,
until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Serves 12.
