The White Book Day went well with all the staff pitching in to deliver copies around the
City and the Inns. Those of you who follow us on Twitter or Facebook will have seen the
pictures. You can see some of the pictures on page 4 of this Book News.
Now it is after Easter and the first quarter of the year has flown by. To make the second
quarter of the year a little more interesting we have our Wildy competition which we
announced last month. This year is our 185th anniversary so our bookshop manager
thought it would be interesting to see whether the staff’s combined years of experience in
law bookselling and publishing would equal the number of years we have been established
in Lincoln’s Inn Archway. You could win signed Paul Hollywood or Tom Kerridge
cookbooks, amongst other prizes. For a starting point on making an educated estimate, see
our website. All guesses should be sent to [email protected] and the winners will be
announced at the annual BIALL conference in Brighton.
Finally we would like to thank our customers for their patience. We had no phones
or electricity in the shop on the 1st and 2nd of April due to the fire in central
London. Fortunately it did not effect our Fleet Street shop, where we were still able
to maintain some form of normal service.

The Old Munster Circuit, the legal memoirs of Maurice Healy, was first
published in 1939 by Michael Joseph, and has reappeared in several editions over the last 75 years. It has been out of print in recent times and
much sought after. These amusing memoirs affectionately describe the
workings and people of the Munster Circuit, where Healy practised from
1910 to 1914. Healy goes to some length in trying to describe and explain
his countrymen to an English audience:
“The difference of atmosphere between the two countries was exemplified
in a case of my father’s which came to be tried in London before Mr Justice
Darling. The point at issue was the identity of a valuable picture, and hosts
of witnesses, many of them humble Irish folk, were examined on either side.
One of these Irishmen who had tuned his harp to the romantic air of his
own County Court was a shock to a judge of pedestrian imagination. Darling at last turned to him sternly and said ‘Tell me, in your country, what
happens to a witness who does not tell the truth?’ ‘Begor, me Lord,’ replied
the Irishman, with a candour that disarmed all criticism, ‘I think his side
usually wins.’”

I’ve been managing eBooks at Wildy’s for a couple of years now and I thought I would take
some time to think about my relationship with eBooks and how this differs from the professional
market. Every day on the train from darkest, deepest Surrey I will read my Kindle. I have got
to the point where I actually prefer using a Kindle rather than a physical book. However my
requirements from my eBook reader are relatively basic. I want it to start on page one and for it
to remember where I was up to when I fall asleep somewhere around Raynes Parks. That’s all I
need. However, the legal profession needs more than that and that is why your basic Kindle is a
red herring in the world of eBooks.
If you use an iPad (or any other tablet) to read your eBooks you will find that you are quickly in a
world where you can annotate, bookmark and highlight with a mere swipe of your thumb. Legal
books are rarely intended to be read from page one to completion instead you need to find the section you want easily and quickly.
Paper books may have Indexes and Contents but they don’t give you the option to search for
keywords or phrases. eBooks can do this and then they will take you straight to that page. With
Apps like ProView and Lexis Note they will also remember where you have been so it is easy to
navigate backwards as well as forwards.
There is still a lot of affection for the physical book and I understand why (I’ve been in bookselling for 22 years!). However eBooks do offer a lot of extra functionality and convenience that a

physical book just cannot provide. And as the late, great Douglas Adams once said “Lovers of
print are simply confusing the plate for the food”.
The White Book was published a few days ago and sales of the
eBook continues to grow every year. This has been the title that
has really got people using and appreciating ProView.

One of the great advantages of eBooks over print copies is their
portability. Phelan’s Immigration Law Handbook is an annual
bestseller and has been for many years now. The 2015 edition
has just been published. This current edition runs to 1900 pages
and weighs over 2 kilogrammes. Do you really want to be carrying that around with you when you can just access it on your
iPad whenever or wherever you are?

a general eBook reader like Adobe Digital Editions then feel free to stop by the shop in Carey

It has been a major contention of classical natural law theory that the arguments
it makes, because rooted in a robust account of human nature, are of universal applicability. A somewhat less well explored dimension is the extent to which it can

China has become the first socialist legal system to acquire an interest and the capacity to
invest significantly beyond its own borders and abandon the policies of economic autarchy that approaches to socialist economic planning seemed to impose upon predecessor
socialist legal systems. In this pathbreaking study, Dr. Chenyang XIE examines how the
Chinese legal system regulates – usually by default rather than design – Chinese investor behavior with respect to outward investment opportunities and/or priorities. He offers
intelligent and perceptive critiques of legal rules, institutions, systems, and administrative
practices, providing suggestions for potential reform or adjustments of these.
Drawing upon the Chinese tradition of codification, the author has prepared a draft Code
of Overseas Investment Law, together with Commentary to explain why each formulation is desirable and necessary. In his view, Chinese overseas investment relations are a
“legal laboratory” for shaping a constructive legal regime to encourage and regulate such
investment. His bold, subtle, and nuanced strategy embodies reservations about the extent
to which in a planned economy the State should assume investment risks rather than the
non-State sector.
Subjects covered include the Chinese macro policies and concepts of overseas investment, information services, investment promotion, approvals, authorizations, and filings,
financial support, foreign exchange regulation, insurance, taxation, and supervision Stateowned assets abroad. The draft Code of Overseas Investment Law is the first of its kind
for any legal system.
Chenyang XIE received his LL.M. and S.J.D. degrees at the Pennsylvania State University. He has many years of experience with legal aspects of inward and outward Chinese
