Good job by Meghan and her team for organizing a successful event. Traffic north of 69th Avenue still continues to cause the committee lots of headaches. The items discussed were: 1) Brookfield Development was in attendance to discuss their consideration of the Market on Macleod site. Brookfield is in their due diligence phase, which ends in June. They are considering the purchase of the Market site, for redevelopment into multi-family residential and some commercial uses. A site design has not yet been contemplated but the representatives will keep in touch with KCA and update the Planning Committee at the appropriate times. This site is within the redevelopment area planned in the Kingsland Community Plan; we anticipate and are supportive of a mixed-use development in this location. We will continue to work with Brookfield if they pursue their purchase of the site, to advise of community needs and concerns as they move forward with their land use redesignation and development permit applications. 2) A Traffic Study Application was submitted in early February, requesting a traffic study be completed by the City of Calgary for the roads at 67, 68 and 69th Avenues SW between Elbow Drive SW and 4A Street SW. This application was a supplement to the application submitted in 2011 to further our need for the community to be looked atby the Cityin the 2015 work program.100 signatures were on our petition to the City requesting traffic management options for this area in Kingsland. Our community is currently being considered and we will know more in March. New items: A land use redesignation application has been submitted to the City of Calgary by Michel Berdnikoff for the parcel south of the Retina Clinic on Elbow Drive SW. The application would allow for a multi-residential development that could result in up to 12 units. KCA has re~continued on page 12~ Bring this ad in & receive 50% OFF your first D/C day! We will be putting together a questionnaire for impacted residents and a petition for those who have concerns. Canvassers will be in the area shortly to request your input. The questionnaire and petition will be left in your mailbox with options for your response. Residents with concerns are asked to contact Ms. Brandy MacInnis at [email protected] to discuss your thoughts. Most injuries occur when a cyclist suffers a fall, strikes a stationary object, or collides with another cyclist/pedestrian. Remember – it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn during recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating, or cycling. Getting informed • Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious injury, or even save a life; • Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or death; • Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet; • Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash, even if it appears undamaged. Getting started • Allow children to assist when buying their helmet. Cyclists who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them; • Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride tricycles need to wear helmets; • Parents must lead by example – always wear a helmet when cycling. Getting the right fit • Take the time to properly fit and adjust your helmet to ensure maximum protection in case of a crash; • When worn properly, helmets should fit level, not tilted up, or down over the forehead; • Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test the fit, the helmet should not fall off when you shake your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened; • Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly forward from the ears; • Only one finger should be able to fit under the chin strap when it is fastened; • Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the helmet. They will help improve the overall fit, comfort and safety. Kingsland Community Preschool News In the month of February, we had time to celebrate our friends and families! We celebrated Valentine’s Day by making valentines and delivering them to our classmates mailboxes. It was very exciting to see our full mailboxes! We continued our study of the Arctic and Arctic Animals. We talked about how polar bears were in trouble because the ice is melting so quickly in the Arctic. We wondered what we could do to help. We heard about “Wear a Sweater” day from our friends at Chinook Park School and decided that it would be a good challenge for us too. On February 4th, we turned down our thermostat at school and we all put our sweaters on. We didn’t even notice that it was cool in our classroom. Maybe we should do that every day. We have been continuing to mix colours and creating new ones. We are now working on colour collages to decorate our classroom. We have been reading about the artist, Ted Harrison, and looking at hisamazing art work. He uses many lines and colours in his art of the Yukon, and we are trying to make art in the same style. Loaves like COBS’s signature Cape Seed, made with nine grains and seeds, pack a delicious and nutritious punch, with two slices containing 25% of the recommended daily iron intake. COBS Bread Kingsland Plaza Kingsland Community I t’s 3am, and Joel Sibuyo, Bakery Manager at COBS Bread Kingsland Plaza, is wide awake. He’s at the bakery, measuring, mixing, and baking fresh bread for his customers to enjoy in just a few short hours once the bakery opens its doors at 8am. Joel hasn’t always been a baker, but he dreams of one day being the franchise owner of a COBS bakery which he will run with his wife, Karolina. Their daughter, Sierra, is only two, but perhaps in the future she will join her parents at the bakery. Having the right team is very important to Joel-with over 14 years of retail management experience, he knows how important it is to deliver a high-quality product paired with a delightful customer experience. The recipes that are used by Joel and COBS Bread bakers have been passed down, refined, and sometimes revisited. Dedicated to using traditional baking methods, you can trust that the Sourdough is authentic as they come, using a real levain starter. It is a 20-hour labour of love. Similarly, the French Baguette is authentic as you would find in a Parisian bakery, given that our technical baker journeyed to France to learn and develop the recipe. Baking it is a process in excess of 16 hours, allowing for proper fermentation to develop the fullest flavour profile. Joel, Karolina, and the team at COBS Kingsland Plaza are proud to be your local baker and welcome you to come by to meet the team. There is no greater honour than being a part of the meals that nourishes families and we hope you will allow us to delight you. This month, Joel and his team are all about the bunsHot Cross Buns, that is. The Hot Cross Buns made at every COBS Bread bakery from now until Easter are a staff and customer favourite. With three flavours - Traditional Fruit, Cranberry Orange and Chocolate Chip, everyone has a favourite. “They’re delicious by themselves, but I highly recommend toasting them,” says Joel. “When that butter melts on a toasty Hot Cross Bun… there aren’t many better treats.” Fresh bread tastes the best, and that is why Joel doesn’t sell the bread he baked today, tomorrow. All leftover bread is donated to local charities at the end of the day. This is part of COBS Bread’s Freshness Promise - that any unsold product at the end of the day is donated. This allows COBS to give back to the community and start from scratch every morning. Speaking of “scratch”- all of COBS traditional and artisan bread is baked from scratch, ingredient by ingredient and contain no added preservatives, colouring, sugar or dairy. Breads containing whole wheat are baked with 100% whole grain flour. A diet rich in whole grain can be helpful in maintaining a healthy heart, managing 18 APRIL GROUPS AND PROGRAMS Kingsland Community Preschool 3 Yr Olds: Tues/Thurs, 8:45-10:45am or 12:45-2:45pm. $130/month Sept-June 4 Yr Olds: Mon/ Wed/ Fri, 8:45-11:15am or 12:45-3:15pm. $180/month Sept-June Spots still available for afternoon classes, may have one available in 4 year old morning class. Thank you to everyone who voted and continues to participate in the public discussion regarding the future of Alberta. I continue to be amazed by the variety and depth of queries that I become involved with as your MLA. One of my favourite tasks as an MLA is researching and talking to experts about issues and questions that are brought to me by constituents. You keep me on my toes! Thank you to those of you who gave up a beautiful Sunday afternoon to attend the Budget Consultation in Haysboro on February 22nd. It was wonderful to see so many new faces and I sincerely appreciated hearing the various points of view regarding Alberta’s financial situation. By the time you receive this newsletter, the 2015 Budget will have been tabled and we will know the outcome of the conversations that were held with thousands of Albertans. I sincerely thank those of you who took the time to complete the on-line survey. I am confident that Premier Prentice is listening to the views and opinions of the constituents in Calgary-Glenmore.
