As in other years, this event is an opportunity to show that you love your library by donating items for the Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS)’s collections. Our generous patrons have given thousands of dollars for wonderful books, DVDs and CDs over the past decade. And like in previous years, you still have the option to donate online or in-person. This year library lovers have the opportunity to select a book, CD or DVD using the library’s Amazon.com wish list, which can be found at http://amzn.com/w/1SPH0GNNZFGPC or by going to Amazon.com and clicking on “Find a Wish List” and typing in “Prince William Public Library”. This is a curated list of the mostneeded items for the library system. Donors simply order what they Volunteer at Your Library It’s raining volunteers all over the library system thanks to our Volunteer Program Coordinator, Belinda Tyson. The library depends on volunteers to supplement and extend Belinda Tyson paid staff’s Volunteer Coordinator ability to deliver services, and to strengthen our relationship with the community. At any one time, more than two-thirds of our staff are volunteers. The citizens who step up from the communities to make up this large volunteer staff give two or more hours per week. Applications are now being accepted for volunteer positions at the new Haymarket Gainesville and Montclair Libraries. If you are interested in additional information about volunteer positions at our new libraries, please email us at LibraryVolunteerOffice@ pwcgov.org. Page 3 would like the library to own, and if desired, they can ask that the library be notified as to the donor’s name at the time of ordering. If a donor would like a special “Love My Library” bookplate affixed to the item or if the material is to be in honor of, or in memory of, someone, they can so specify by sending an email as per the instructions found on the Amazon site. Donors also have the option of visiting any of the 10 libraries to donate funds. These funds will be used to purchase item for the library’s collection. All libraries have copies of the donor form, and purchased items will be given a special Love My Library bookplate. Library staff members will select what the library most needs, using the preferences listed on the form. In addition, in-person donors will receive a small thank you gift as an acknowledgement of their generosity. PWPLS looks forward to seeing how much you love your library. Stop by from April 12th through May 10th to do exactly that – show your love. And you can always visit pwcgov.org/library. Event Calendar Around the Yellow House By PWC Poet Laureate Zan Hailey The train passes—a heavy heart—beating down the tracks. A U-turning rickety pick-up, matte black finish—brings dogs to a bark across the block. Afternoon planes fly—streaking contrails that connect cumulonimbus clouds. And a letter from an uncensored inmate was left in my mailbox while I was out walking a fuchsia petaled path, where wild Dogwoods fade pink with the gold of magnolias, leaving a perfume alley trail. A squirrel bats its tail like a duster on a bookshelf—take in the day. Open it slow—pocketknife blade soundly tearing a slit—Dear Wonderful. ©2014 Zan Hailey Chasing Ginsberg By PWC Poet Laureate Robert Scott A four-year-old girl practices diving Into the deep end of the swimming pool. She wears inflatable water wings That possess all the confident certainty Of a soap bubble, But she throws herself fearlessly, repeatedly Into eight feet of imminent disaster With only a seventy-year-old grandfather to catch her. It’s slack tide; The wind dies. A squadron of mosquitoes, like Luftwaffe, Emerge from the estuary in attack formation. They’re gathering blood for the swamp. I want to stay, Bear witness to her bold fearlessness, But the Wehrmacht drives me off. Such extemporaneous acts of courage are rare, Hard to come by; Someone should savor them. Haymarket Gainesville Community Library 14870 Lightner Road Haymarket, VA 20169 www.pwcgov.org/library Opening Late 2015 Construction Progress Report The future Haymarket Gainesville Community Library will consist of a 21,665 square foot one story library. Parking has been provided for 100 staff and patron vehicles, with priority spaces reserved for hybrid vehicles, carpooling, and handicapped visitors. Another focal part of the site is The Bushy Park House, a historic farm house dating back to the late 1600s, which will be preserved and restored by Prince William County. The library is built out of a steel frame which sits on a concrete slab on grade. The exterior walls will be clad in a red colored brick, selected to complement the surrounding neighborhood. The main form of the library is a long rectangular space topped by a barrel vault roof. A circular form extends off the south side of the library and will house the children’s reading area. The library will be book ended by two tall stone features which echo the chimneys built at The Bushy Park House. The roof pops up above the main spine of the building and tall clerestory windows let a lot of natural light into the main stack and reading area. The underside of the roof will be clad in natural wood providing a warm and inviting space on the interior. Large areas of glass offer views to the surrounding neighborhood and permit natural light into the building interior. The building is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015. Currently, the majority of the steel frame, wood deck and exterior sheathing has been completed. The contractor is currently working on waterproofing and constructing the roof of the library. Montclair Community Library 5049 Waterway Drive Dumfries, VA 22025 www.pwcgov.org/library Opening Late 2015 Library Interiors to Reflect Environment Many of you are excitedly watching the construction of the new Montclair and Haymarket Gainesville Community Libraries. If you are unable to drive past the construction sites, you can manage a virtual tour by visiting the library web site and checking out the new photos that are constantly being uploaded. The external facades become clearer to all as walls are constructed and roofing takes place, but what about the insides? Currently, finishing touches are being made to the interior designs of both these buildings; designs around two wonderful themes. Both new Community Libraries will reflect the nature of their locations. Montclair Community Library embraces the theme of the lake with water, blue skies, birds, creatures, and plants found in that habitat. Think frogs, turtles, fish, and boats. Soothing greens and blues throughout the facility with some bold, bright splash’s of color in the teen area. Haymarket Gainesville will echo the fields and pastures so abundant in the area. The colors will focus on the vision of harvest, with red and rust hues, warm textured tans, and rich autumn golds. And of course touches of blue to reflect the sky. Reflections of horse country and farms will add fun and depth to the design. The colors and themes will enhance the pleasant user experience to be discovered at the new branches! There will be plenty of tables and chairs for study and computer work, several small meeting/tutor rooms, quiet study rooms, and large community rooms in addition to the books, DVDs, CDs, recorded books, puzzles and friendly helpful staff! image for illustrative purposes only Sing, Dance, and Move as you Read to the Rhythm for Summer Quest 2015.
