On the day after Christmas in 1991, 23-year-old Mary Dupris’ body was found near the 400 block of Paseo del Volcan NW. She appeared to have been run over, and was also shot in the head. Though the case grew cold, the Albuquerque Police Department continued its investigation and in 2012, the case came to a head when a DNA CODIS hit linked defendant Anthony Morris to Dupris’ death. At the time, Morris was serving a prison sentence for the 1982 murder of a woman in Washington State. Then, in 2014, Morris was indicted on First Degree Murder in Bernalillo County, and then brought to New Mexico to face charges. His murder trial began Monday, March 23rd and lasted just two days. Morris denied the crime, and did not testify during trial. A total of 17 witnesses took the stand on behalf of the State. Key witnesses included: (1) A woman working at a motel at 10th and Central, who witnessed the victim being abducted by someone in a red truck; (2) The victim's sister, who narrowed the timeline to when the abduction must have occurred (4:45-5:15 pm); (3) A father and son in different cars driving 15 minutes apart at 6:45/7:00 pm (one who saw a red truck and one who found the body); (4) The OMI doctor and DNA Analysts who recovered sperm DNA at autopsy from the Decedent's mouth, which was then tested multiple times over the years by various labs, and eventually got developed into a profile and was a hit in CODIS to defendant. (5) Albuquerque Police Department Cold Case Detective Sally Dyer, who put the pieces together, and determined that the defendant owned a red truck in 1991. On March 25th, after just two days of trial and only two hours of jury deliberations, a Bernalillo County jury returned a guilty verdict on 1st degree Murder. The Court immediately proceeded to sentencing, and Morris was sentenced to Life in prison. Morris will be transported back to Washington State to serve out the remainder of his sentence for his Washington State case. His Life sentence for Dupris’ murder will run consecutive to that time. This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney David Waymire, and Assistant District Attorney Jesse Benoit, both of the Violent Crimes Division of the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office. ### Juvenile Division 5100 Second St. NW (505) 222-1160 Albuquerque, NM 87107 FAX: (505) 241-1160 Main Office 520 Lomas Blvd. NW (505) 222-1099 Albuquerque, NM 87102 st FAX 1 Floor: (505) 241-1100 FAX 2nd Floor: (505) 241-1200 FAX 3rd Floor: (505) 241-1299 Metro Division (505) 222-1079 FAX: 241-1000 520 Lomas Blvd. NW Albuquerque, NM 87102 March 30, 2015– FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (TOP) Contact: Kayla Anderson; (505) 222-1312 NEWS RELEASE Man Accused of Using Pliers to Bind Teenage Girl is Indicted by a Bernalillo County Grand Jury Albuquerque, NM– The 38-year-old Albuquerque man accused of blinding his teenage girlfriend with a pair of pliers, has been charged by a Bernalillo County grand jury.
