Participant Information
Welcome to the 19th annual Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon!
The marathon, half marathon and relay begin at 7:30 AM on Sunday, April 26th
at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and finishes at the Ocean Promenade in Long
Branch. The point-to-point course travels through the diverse neighborhoods and
business districts of Oceanport, Monmouth Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst,
Loch Arbour, Asbury Park and Ocean Grove.
The 2nd annual ShapingNJ 5K will take place on Saturday, April 25th at 8:30 AM
starting at the Ocean Promenade in Long Branch. It is a fun, 3.1 mile looped course
along the oceanfront and filled with scenic ocean views.
The Barnabas Health Family Festival and Kids Races are also on Saturday, April
25th. The fun starts with on-site registration at 8:30 AM and goes until noon on the
Great Lawn at the Ocean Promenade in Long Branch. There will be kids races,
clowns, face painting, music, carnival games, crafts, refreshments, and more.

SUNDAY SECURITY MEASURES
To ensure a safe, enjoyable race experience all ATHLETES and SPECTATORS must abide by
the following security measures:
Start Area
• There will be no backpacks, pocketbooks, handbags, etc. of any kind permitted to
enter the start line area at Monmouth Park.
• All athlete belongings must be loose within a race issued clear plastic bag. All bags
are subject to search. All bags dropped at the Baggage Trucks will be transported to
the Finish Line.
• Athletes must have bibs visible at all times.
Finish Area
• There will be no backpacks, pocketbooks, handbags, etc. of any kind permitted to
enter the Finish Line Festival area.
• Athletes will be able to pick up their clear plastic gear bag in the Recovery area at
the Finish Line after the race. Please do not leave gear bags unattended at any time.

MARATHON INFO
Run through the diverse neighborhoods and business districts of Oceanport, Monmouth
Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Asbury Park, and Ocean Grove. This
scenic, fast and flat course has been very popular with both runners and spectators alike. It is
a point-to-point course that has proven to be a good choice for those attempting to qualify
for the B.A.A. Boston Marathon as so many have done with us in the past.
Start Time:
• 7:30 AM
• Athletes in wheelchairs will start at 7:30 AM followed in waves by the rest of the
corrals.
Start Location:
• Monmouth Park (on Park Rd.), 175 Oceanport Ave., Oceanport, NJ 07757
Finish Location:
• Ocean Promenade (north of Pier Village and the Ocean Place Resort & Spa), Long
Branch, NJ 07740
Time Limit:
• Chip time of 6 hours 30 minutes or less (approximately 15 minutes per mile)
• First 4 miles must have a chip time of 1 hour or less
• Those not past the 4 mile mark by 8:45 AM will be rerouted without a finish time
• First 11.5 miles must have a chip time of 3 hours or less
• Those not past 11.5 mile mark in 3 hours or less (10:45 AM) will be instructed to leave
the course; certain parts of the course will begin to open to traffic and on-course support will begin to shut down at that time.

• Point-to-Point course is USATF certified
• Boston qualifying race
• Very fast and virtually flat course (few very gentle rolling stretches and bridge crossings)
• Official state championship race of the Road Runners Club of America
Age Restrictions:
• At least 18 years old
• Age requirements are based on recommendations by the International Marathon
Medical Directors Association (IMMDA) and the American Pediatric Association. For
further information and background, see: IMMDA Advisory Statement on Children and
Marathoning. Entering a false date of birth during registration will result in the registration being cancelled without refund.
On Course Food:
• GU energy gels: Available at miles 7.9, 13.3, 18.7, 19.2 and 23.6
• If you’ve been training with other Energy Gels please be prepared to carry your
own favorite gel packs and only take the GU if necessary.
• Bananas: Available at miles 13.3, 18.7, 19.2 and 23.6
• Oranges: Available at mile 9.5

HALF MARATHON INFO
Enjoy a 13.1 mile celebration through the neighborhoods and business districts of Oceanport,
Monmouth Beach, and Long Branch. With the same oceanfront finish as the marathon, the
half marathon has become a spring tradition at the Jersey Shore!

HALF MARATHON RELAY INFO
The Half Marathon Relay combines the spirit and excitement of the half marathon with the
camaraderie of a team relay event. It will be run on the same course and at the same time as
the half marathon.
Start Time:
• 7:30 AM
• Athletes in wheelchairs will start at 7:30 AM followed in waves by the rest of the corrals.

• Relay Staff will be on-site to help with any questions and to ensure that each team
completes the hand-off properly. Please adhere to all directions from the staff
• Local parking will be limited within 1/4 mile of the Transition Area
• Shuttles buses will be available to transport:
• Second runners from the start area to the transition area. The shuttles will leave
just before the start of the half marathon at 7:30 AM
• First runners from the transition area to the finish area
Distance of Each Leg of the Race:
• First leg - approximately 6.7 miles; will begin at the Start Line and end at the Relay
Transition Area
• Second leg - approximately 6.4 miles; will start at the Relay Transition Area and end

HALF MARATHON RELAY INFO
Time Limit:
• Overall chip time of 3 hours 15 minutes or less
• Teams with walkers or slow runners are welcome to participate provided they are
able to complete the entire race in 3 hours 15 minutes from the time the 1st team member crosses the start line until the second team member crosses the finish line

• None, though we rely upon the common sense of parents/legal guardians of those 17
years old and younger and suggest they consult with the child’s pediatrician

registration cancelled without refund
On Race Day:
• Bibs:
• FRONT of shirt - “Team Name” bib with race number
• The 1st team member will wear a belt with a bib and timing chip on it which will be
handed off to the second team member in the transition area. Only one team member
may be on the race course at a time
• Two finisher’s medals for the entire team will be given to the second team member
after they cross the finish line and turn in the timing chip belt
• Second team member should request food for both team members as the first team
member will not be allowed inside the athlete food tent

ON-COURSE INFORMATION
Portable toilets:
Portable toilets will be available at the start and finish area and along the course near every
fluid station. Ask a fluid station volunteer for the closest toilet.
Medical Support:
The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon & Half Marathon is very proud of the volunteer support from the many New Jersey municipalities that supply EMT staff and ambulances along
the course, as well as the volunteer medical personnel from Monmouth Medical Center who
staff our medical tents.
• There is a large medical facility adjoining our finish line area to deal with serious
issues.
• Mobile EMT ambulances are stationed at strategic locations throughout the course.
• Bicyclists will be patrolling the course in multiple sectors to both assist and seek
assistance as needed.
Timing:
We will be using chip timing with mats at the start line, finish line, 10K, 13.1 mile, 30K, and 40K
points. Timing clocks with mile markers will be placed at nearly every mile along the course.
• Clock locations: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.1, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26
Please note: the timing clocks will start when the first corral starts, and therefore will not be accurate for you.
Fluid Stations:
Gatorade Endurance Formula (lemon-lime) is available at each of our fluid stations. Gatorade will be served first at the stations with water served second. Most fluid stations average
about 1.5 miles apart and are staffed by many service organizations and volunteers from
various charity beneficiaries.

Safety:
We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you DO NOT use your headphones during the races for
safety reasons. Please be aware of your surroundings, including fellow runners and the possibility of errant traffic on the course. And make sure you take in the spectators, bands and
scenery!
Clothing:
All discarded clothing will be donated to charity. We cannot return clothing discarded either
at the start or along the course.
Animals and children in strollers, bikes, etc.:
For safety and insurance reasons, animals of any kind, regular or jogging strollers, bikes, kettle
bells and in-line skates are NOT permitted on the course.

for families. Enjoy events for all ages and abilities including a kids 1.2 mile marathon, kids’

The marathon, half marathon and half marathon relay start at 7:30AM All races begin at
Monmouth Park in Oceanport and the last race ends by 2:30 PM at the Ocean Promenade
in Long Branch. Shuttles will be available to bring you back to the central parking area near
the start line.
Shuttle buses will also be available to take spectators and volunteers to the Finish and Relay
Transition areas and back again to Central Parking.

Parking near the Finish area is limited and many local streets will be blocked starting no later
than 7:00 AM.
SPECTATOR SUGGESTED VIEWING LOCATIONS
SUNDAY RACES
The Novo Nordisk New Jersey Marathon, Half Marathon, and Half Marathon Relay point-topoint courses are “spectator friendly”. Make a parking plan and walk to your choice of viewing location from there. Bring a noise-maker and/or a strong voice to cheer.
• Finish Area – On the Ocean Promenade in Long Branch, just north of the Ocean
Place Resort & Spa.
• Eastern end of Broadway, Long Branch - A short walk across Ocean Blvd. to/from the
Finish Area.
• Pier Village, Long Branch - Mile 12.8 of the Half Marathon/Relay and mile 25.9 of the
Marathon is at the beach and full of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. A great
vantage point and a great place to relax and watch the race.
• Corner of Ocean Ave & Brighton Ave. in the West End area of Long Branch - Mile 11.5
of the Marathon/Half Marathon/Relay and also mile 24.5 of the Marathon as it comes
back north towards the finish line. This beautiful, tree-lined stretch will be closed to
traffic (be sure to park west of 2nd Ave.). It is one block from the beach, full of shops/
restaurants, and will have live entertainment at the bandstand.
• Asbury Park Boardwalk, Asbury Park - The stretch of boardwalk south of Convention Hall is lined with shops and restaurants. Another great location to relax and watch
the race.
• Between the Great Auditorium and Ocean Ave., Ocean Grove – On the southern end
of the course and close to the mile 19 turnaround and the Finish Line 7 miles away. It is
lined with historic B&Bs and pleasant ocean views.
