Details about this exciting initiative are outlined on Page 2. To find out more about the School Breakfast Program, please contact Miranda on 9463 3213 or via email [email protected] School Breakfast Program 2013 COUNTER: Total Schools: 377 # Children involved: over 14,000 # Breakfasts per week: over 48,000 # Emergency meals per week: over 18,000 (Current as at 30 April 2013) THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 2, 2013 2013 School Breakfast Program Volunteer Awards Volunteers are critical to the existence of School Breakfast Programs across WA. Whilst Foodbank WA provides the ‘food’ component of the program free of charge to schools, the Program would not function on a school-level without the commitment and dedication of volunteers. On each school day, hundreds of volunteers across WA work to ensure that thousands of children can sit down in the classroom with a full stomach and ready to learn. Nominations are now open for the 2013 School Breakfast Program Volunteer Awards. The initiative is aimed at helping schools to acknowledge and formally recognise the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to School Breakfast Programs across the state. In acknowledgment of the benefits of volunteering to good mental health, Foodbank WA is happy to continue the partnership with Mentally Healthy WA’s Act-Belong-Commit initiative as a supporter of the 2013 Awards scheme. What is the School Breakfast Program Volunteer Awards? The Awards are not intended as a competition, where one schools’ nominees are competing against other nominees state-wide – there are no ‘winners’ and ‘losers’. Rather, the purpose of the initiative is for Foodbank WA to assist each School Breakfast Program school to formally recognise the efforts of standout volunteers. What are SBP Volunteers’? School Breakfast Program volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, be they parents, community members or representatives from outside groups. Even school staff who coordinate the program often do so voluntarily, over and above their usual duties. What sort of tasks do SBP Volunteers perform? Volunteers perform various ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘front line’ tasks, including: • Ordering and collecting SBP product from the local Foodbank WA Branch (or arranging transport of SBP product to remote schools) • Communicating with Foodbank WA • Setting up, providing breakfasts and cleaning up • Ensuring all equipment is in working order and secure • Talking to children and parents during breakfast We are asking schools to nominate up to two people within their school community to receive the Award. These people may be staff members, community volunteers or even the designated ‘SBP Coordinator’. Up to two people per school can be nominated and the nominations must be endorsed by the Principal before submission. The nomination form is available for download via the following Healthy Food for All® website link: http://www.healthyfoodforall.com.au/images/uploads/2013_SBP_Volunteer_Award_-_Nomination_Form.pdf. For more information, please contact Miranda (Coordinator, School Breakfast Program) at Foodbank WA on 9463 3213 or via email [email protected] Nominations close on Friday 7 June (Week 5) 2013 Issue 2: Term 2, Page 2 THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 2, 2013 Partner Focus: Foodbank WA Partnership Awards Four stand-out Healthy Food for All® partners – BHP Billiton Iron Ore, BW James Transport, Harvey Fresh and Pilbara Population Health Unit – were recently recognised at Foodbank WA’s inaugural Partnership Awards held at Government House. Hosted by Foodbank WA Patron and Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC, the awards acknowledged the dedication of people and organisations committed to fighting hunger in Western Australia. On behalf of Healthy Food for All® schools and participants across WA, thank you for partnering with us to support food relief and healthy lifestyle education. Partnership Award Recipients – Healthy Food for All® Category BHP Billiton Iron Ore BHP Billiton’s commitment to communities in the Pilbara has seen it provide support for Foodbank WA’s Healthy Food for All® programs throughout the region. Not just financial, BHP Billiton’s support has included providing access and transport to communities as remote as Punmu and Jigalong. Harvey Fresh Since 2010, Harvey Fresh has supplied low cost UHT milk and donated 97,200 litres of unsweetened fruit juice. Fresh produce is a cornerstone of the School Breakfast Program. Howeve, remote schools often miss out due to transport challenges. The support of Harvey Fresh means that these children can still enjoy the health benefits of including fruit in their diets. BW James Transport Bruce James and the BW James team not only transport food to regional schools at a low cost, they also provide outstanding service to Foodbank WA and the schools themselves. Foodbank WA often receives feedback from schools detailing the truck driver’s friendly attitude, helpfulness and concern for children’s safety. WA Country Health Service’s Pilbara Population Health Unit PPHU has been instrumental in the expansion of the Regional Strategy in the Pilbara. From the provision of transport to assisting with access and training, Pilbara Population Health Unit’s support has been a critical element of Foodbank’s impact in the region. Help us spread the Healthy Food for All® message! “I wish we’d heard about the School Breakfast Program years ago!” is one of the most common statements we hear when schools contact Foodbank WA for the first time. Nearly 400 schools – a third of all schools in WA - are involved in our Healthy Food for All® initiatives (School Breakfast, Food Sensations® and Choose to Move), yet there are still many more schools out there that could be receiving support from Foodbank WA. Spreading the Healthy Food for All® story is a main focus for us in 2013. Information packs were recently mailed to over 200 schools, each containing the new Healthy Food for All® Case Study Storybook – in this way, we hope to provide a ‘real life’ glimpse of the various forms and benefits of the Programs. We are calling on School Breakfast Program schools across the state to help us spread the word about Healthy Food for All®. Word of mouth is a powerful tool – in fact, endorsement by current schools is the main reason for new schools joining the Program! Spreading the word may be as simple as a brief mention at district or cluster meetings, or simply forwarding The Morning Toast to colleagues at local schools. After all, what better testimonial for the Program than personal recommendation from current School Breakfast Program schools! 2013 Issue 2: Term 2, Page 3 THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 2, 2013 Free Sports Equipment for Schools Did you know children aged 5-18 years of age should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day? This can built up throughout the day with a variety of activities. Physical activity should be done at moderate to vigorous intensity. There are heaps of fun ways to do it: • Moderate activities like brisk walking, bike riding with friends, skateboarding and dancing. • Vigorous activities such as football, netball, soccer, running, swimming laps or training for sport. • Vigorous activities are those that make you “huff and puff”. For additional health benefits, try to include 20 minutes or more of vigorous activity at least three to four days a week (Department of Health and Ageing, 2013) To help increase children’s physical activity levels in schools Foodbank WA’s Choose to Move Physical Activity Program is available to schools registered for the School Breakfast Program. Schools who qualify for the Choose to Move Program receive a range of free sporting equipment. The aim of Choose to Move is to encourage students in years 4-7 to be more physically active through structured lessons and unstructured play. Sporting equipment provided free to schools include: basketballs, markers, tennis balls, AFL footballs, bean bags, soccer balls, cricket sets, dodge balls, netballs, Frisbees, touch flag belts and ball pumps packed in a quality sports bag. If you would like more information or would like to register your school to participate in Choose to Move, please visit the HFFA website www.healthyfoodforall.com.au or contact Jenny Tartaglia (Foodbank WA’s Physical Activity Promotion Coordinator) on (08) 9463 3210, or via email [email protected]. Session content can be targeted to the needs of your group and sessions may include a practical, hands-on cooking component using simple and healthy recipes. Nicole can be contacted on 0419 208 048 or via email [email protected]. The aim of the Sport4All program is to benefit tens of thousands of young people across Western Australia by increasing participation at communications in sport and recreation clubs, increasing the capacity of clubs and getting kids playing outside more often. For more information about KidSport, please contact Paul Goodly (Project Leader, KidSport) on 9492 9740, email [email protected] or visit your local government office. Many thanks to our Food Sensations® in Schools team for providing the recipe for this edition of The Morning Toast – Pumpkin Scones. (Editor’s note: typing up this recipe made me hungry, so the Healthy Food for All® team whipped up a test batch – they were delicious!). These scones are a great idea for the lunch-box, or an after-school snack! National Volunteer Week (13-19 May) is a time for us to reflect on and acknowledge the invaluable support of volunteers. Why not print out the recipe and file it in the ‘Recipes’ section (section 8.0) of the School Breakfast Program Toolkit? This will ensure that all recipes are located together for future use. You may also like to publish this recipe in your school newsletter to share with your school community. If you would like to share a recipe for a future edition of The Morning Toast, please email us at [email protected]. 2013 Issue 2: Term 2, Page 5 Foodbank WA is mostly staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers. Over 180 volunteers help in a number of ways at Foodbank WA’s branches across the state. Some help with office work and invoicing. Others are the weigh out staff you see at the branches. Our warehouses also have a number of volunteers who help sort donated stock and pack up your School Breakfast Program orders ready for pick up, or to be transported to regional and remote schools across Western Australia. Without our volunteers Foodbank WA wouldn’t be able to do the work we do. So, don’t be shy and say thank you to any of the volunteers you see on your next Foodbank visit. We’ll be giving them a big Thank You during National Volunteer Week! THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 2, 2013 Pumpkin Scones Serves: makes 12 scones Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes These scones are great lunchbox fillers or after-school snacks! Ingredients: 1 cup pumpkin, peeled and chopped 1 cup white plain flour 1 cup wholemeal plain flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoon margarine 1 tablespoon hot water 1 egg Equipment: Chopping board Saucepan Large bowl Wooden Spoon Measuring cups & spoons Knife Small bowl Fork Baking tray Method: 1. Wash your hands - you are now ready to cook! Tips and Variations! 2. Preheat the oven to 180oC. 3. Cook pumpkin by boiling in a pan of hot water for 10 minutes, or until tender. Allow pumpkin to cool. • This recipe uses wholemeal flour to boost the fibre content. If wholemeal flour is not available, it is fine to use all white flour. Don’t try to use all wholemeal flour, as the scones will come out too dense. • Want to ‘spice things up’ a bit? Try adding 2 tablespoons of chopped rosemary, 2 tablespoons of chopped chives, or 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. • Try using leftover roast pumpkin instead of cooking fresh. • Use low-fat cream cheese to spread on the scones, instead of butter or margarine. • Once cool, scones can be sealed in snap-lock bags and frozen. 4. Blend margarine and sugar with hot water in a small bowl. Add the egg and mashed pumpkin. Mix well. 5. In a separate bowl, mix the flours and baking powder. 6. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture. 7. Mix until no dry areas are left. If the mix is too dry, you may need to add a little more water. 8. Use a dessert spoon to drop heaped spoonfuls of the mixture onto a lightly greased tray. You should get 12 – 15 scones. 9. Bake at 180oC for 12 to 15 minutes 2013 Issue 2: Term 2, Page 6 THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 2, 2013 New Regional Strategy Resource We are very pleased to announce the release of our new Regional Food Sensations® Educator’s Resource. This new resource is a useful tool to assist educators in the delivery of Food Sensations® nutrition, shopping and cooking concepts to a range of client groups. The resource has a variety of modules with pictorial lesson plans to demonstrate the practical delivery of the activities. It includes modules such as; Healthy Eating Basics, Soft Drinks, Budget Buying, Food Label Reading, Homemade vs. Takeaway, Meal Planning, Store Tours and Cooking. An accompanying CD which has additional modules and lesson plans is included to complement the Regional Food Sensations® Educator’s Resource. Teachers, Aboriginal Islander Education Officers; community workers and health professionals working in regional and remote parts of WA will find this a helpful guide in educating communities in the areas of nutrition, shopping and cooking. To receive a copy of the Regional Food Sensations® Educator’s Resource, you can enrol in one of the Food Sensations® Educator Training courses, delivered state-wide. We’ve also listened to feedback from schools that it is difficult for teaching staff to attend training programs during the day, which is why we now offer after school Food Sensations® Professional Learning sessions on-site, to every school that we visit, providing staff with the chance to see the activities in action and being trained to use them in the classroom. Both the Educator Training delivered in regional towns and the Professional Learning delivered on school sites are completely customised to suit the location in which they are being delivered. So far, the feedback about these sessions has been fantastic. For more information about the new Regional Food Sensations® Educator’s Resource, please contact Stephanie Godrich (Regional Strategy Coordinator) on 9463 3209 or via email [email protected]. Upcoming Regional Strategy trips for Terms 2 and 3, 2013: REGION Pilbara (Punmu & Kunawaritji) Pilbara (Warralong, Strelley & Hedland) Kimberley (Yakanarra & Wangkatjungka) Pilbara (Yandeyarra & Hedland) Pilbara (Newman & Jigalong) DATES 20-23 May 17-21 June 21-26 July 12-16 August 2-6 September Important: Foodbank WA System Upgrade As of July 1, Foodbank WA will transition to a new software package, Microsoft Dynamics GP, which will replace the current Pastel system. The upgrade will streamline the ‘business side’ of operations – everything from logistics and inventory to finances and administration. The streamlined operations will also benefit member agencies and schools, and will pave the way for future improvements and expansion. Staff and volunteers have been working for a number of months to set up and learn the new system. However (as with all major system changes), it will take some time for all the issues to be ironed out. The transition will mainly affect internal administrative processes. ‘Client side’ School Breakfast Program operations (submitting orders, collecting product, etc) will remain the same. However, please be mindful that some general operations (such as point of sale processing) may be delayed or take longer than usual. Foodbank WA runs on a small number of staff and a dedicated, passionate team of volunteers, with our primary aim being to make your Foodbank experience as pleasant and efficient as possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition period. Foodbank Peel! Foodbank WA is proud to announce the relocation of Foodbank Peel to a bigger and better facility, just 1.5km from the old Thornborough Road site. Located on Reserve Drive, Mandurah, the new facility is easily accessible, with plenty of parking to cater for our member agencies and schools and extended operating hours. In the past, a lack of space prevented us from keeping a ‘stockpile’ of product at the branch, requiring several trips a week between Mandurah and the Perth (Welshpool) branch, just to keep the shelves stocked with product. The new Reserve Drive facility is twice the size of the old site – this will allow for storage of extra product without impacting on ‘shop floor’ space, and reduce the fuel, vehicle and staff costs associated with frequent trips to Perth. Hamish Dobie, Foodbank WA Inventory & Logistics Manager, has been one of the key parties involved in the Peel branch relocation. “The demand for product at Foodbank Peel has gone up 37% on the same time last year,” Mr Dobie said. “The new facility will go a long way to helping to satisfy the demand in the Peel region.” Street Address: Unit 1, 68 Reserve Drive, Mandurah Phone: 9581 9200 (same as previous) Fax: 9581 9211 (same as previous) Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm If you have any queries in relation to the Peel branch relocation, please contact Caroline Cox (Manager, Foodbank Peel) on 9581 9200.
