Good morning everyone. My name’s Ethan, and I’d like to tell you about the different
activities on offer on board this fantastic cruise ship.
First of all, there are lots of sports facilities. There’s the swimming pool on deck 3. I’m
sure you’ve seen it already. Near there, there is a hot tub, sauna and steam room. You
can use the pool and hot tub between seven in the morning and eleven in the evening.
The sauna is available from one in the afternoon until nine in the evening. You don’t
have to book or pay extra to use any of these facilities.
There’s a gym on deck 4, and you can go there whenever you like. No need to book.
It’s open from 6 am until 10 pm. There are also four squash courts. You can book
these at the desk in the gym.
If you’re not sporty, there are lots of other interesting things to do. If you’d like to learn
to paint, there is an art class every morning at ten o’clock, which lasts two hours.
There’s a cooking class every afternoon at three. There’s different themes every day.
Today it’s Indian cooking, and tomorrow it’s Italian cooking. You don’t have to book for
these classes, just arrive. But there is a maximum number of people in the class, so
make sure you arrive early, or there may not be enough space for you.
In the evening we have lots of entertainment on offer. There’s a show every night in the
theatre. Tonight there’s a jazz band, and tomorrow night there’s a comedy show.
These shows are all free, but you need to get a ticket from the ticket office at the
theatre. In the afternoons, you can hear lectures about the different places we visit on
the cruise. Today, there’s a lecture about the wildlife of North Africa. This is at two
o’clock and four o’clock, in the theatre. It’s the same lecture both times. Tomorrow’s
lecture, which is at the same two times, is about the Roman Empire in North Africa.
So, that’s all for now. On Wednesday, I’ll tell you about the different activities
happening later in the week. Until then, I hope you have a great time.

Accom Officer: Hello, can I help you?
Marcel: Yes, my friends told me they already have accommodation for next year. They
said I need to sort out my accommodation too.
Accom Officer: Yes, you do. In fact, you’ve left it a bit late. We tell students to arrange

accommodation in January.
Marcel: Really? That’s very early.
Accom Officer: Well, by March, there’s usually nothing left. So, it wasn’t a good idea to
leave it until the end of May. Well, let’s have a look. I can probably find something for
you. What sort of accommodation are you looking for?
Marcel: Well, I’d like to stay in the university halls again.
Accom Officer: What year are you in?
Marcel: What year am I in? Oh, I see, I’m a first year student.
Accom Officer: So in September you’ll be in your second year. I’m afraid we don’t
reserve halls accommodation for second year students. Rooms in halls go to first year
students, and we give any remaining places to final year students.
Marcel: Oh. So what can I do?
Accom Officer: Well, most students rent a room in a house. It’s often cheaper than
halls anyway.
Marcel: Okay…
Accom Officer: Do you have any friends you’d like to share a house with?
Marcel: I don’t know… not really. I think they already have plans.
Accom Officer: Well, I’ll look on the computer system. There may be free rooms in
some houses. I’ll print a list for you. .. (sound of computer keys)… hmm, there’s not
very much left.
Marcel: What is there?
Accom Officer: There’s a room in a house on Old Road. It’s with 5 other students, two
bathrooms, one kitchen, living room. £85 a week.
Marcel: Old Road? Where’s that?
Accom Officer: It’s about 5 miles from the campus.
Marcel: Five miles? That’s quite far.
Accom Officer: You can take the bus.
Marcel: Isn’t there something closer?
Accom Officer: Er… let me see - there’s one on Edward Street: small room, with 6
other students, one bathroom, kitchen diner - it doesn’t have a living room. This
bedroom’s very small - only 2 metres by 3. It’s cheap though - £65 a week, bills
included.
Marcel: It doesn’t sound so good…
Accom Officer: There’s nothing else close to campus. You could look for a private
room.
Marcel: How do I do that?
Accom Officer: Check the local papers, look online - The Newcastle Forum website
often has accommodation in it. Someone might want a lodger, or have a room to rent.
Marcel: Okay, I’ll try the forum. Thanks for your help.

Hello students. I’m Mr Taylor, and I’m one of the geography teachers on this course.
This lesson, I’m going to tell you about the course.
This year, you will study four modules. You will do two modules this term, one module
next term and one in the final term. The topics of the modules this term are Industry
and Rivers. I will teach the Industry module, and Miss Holiday will teach the Rivers
module. Next term, Miss Holiday will teach the Population module, and in the final
term, I will teach you about Climate.
You will have two exams at the end of the year. The first will last two hours, and will
have questions on all four topics: Industry, Population, Rivers and Climate. The other
exam will last one and a half hours. This one will test your geographical skills.
During the course, you will have homework twice a week. Sometimes you will
complete some exercises, you might prepare a presentation, do some reading and
note-taking, or write an essay. You should spend about 30 minutes on your homework
each time. Each term, you will also do a project. For these projects, you will have to
do some research and write it up. The finished projects will be around 2000 words
long. These projects are important, because your marks will go towards your final
grade.
Once a month, we will do some fieldwork. We might visit a local place of interest, or go
into the countryside and do some experiments. The fieldwork is important because it
teaches you important geography skills.
Finally, let me tell you about books. We do not follow one course book. We want you
to read widely. You should read some of the different text books in the library. Here is
a list of useful books to read.
