The airplane model was built at 1:20 scale, measuring approximately 1.8m long, with a wingspan of 1.4m. Ed Diment, from Bright Bricks, said: “The LEGO build of the Flybe Dash 8 Q400 went really well and generated a lot of interest from travellers and airport visitors alike. Set to take place on the airport’s runway at 6am on Sunday 21st June 2015, the run is 5km in length. Approximately 500 people are expected to join in the fun, taking advantage of the unique opportunity to run along a real runway at daybreak on the longest day of the year. The Summer Solstice Sprint will raise funds for Sophie’s Appeal – a local Southampton charity which provides support to children, their parents or carers, nursing and support staff who find themselves suddenly faced with the reality of childhood cancer. The charity’s patron and ex-Southampton Football Club player, James Beattie, officially launched the event at the airport. James Beattie said: “What a fantastic opportunity for people to help a charity so close to my heart. I know Sophie would have loved to have taken part in such a unique event, especially with her dad, on Father’s Day.” Kevin Montgomery, Airport Fire Service Station Manager and organiser of the event added: “It’s an early start but what better way to welcome dawn than on the day of the Summer Solstice? The airport will be open as normal for flights from 07:30am, so runners can be back home in time for breakfast.” Mike Barringer, Chairperson and Trustee of Sophie’s Appeal – and Airside Operations Duty Officer at Southampton Airport, said “We are so grateful to Southampton Airport for giving us and our supporters an opportunity that very few people will ever experience, the chance to run on the runway at Southampton Airport. We have enjoyed fantastic support from Southampton Airport and its staff over the last ten years and the money raised from this event will make a huge difference to the lives of many local children battling or recovering from life threatening illnesses.” At the end of the run, prizes will be awarded for the fastest runner in male, female and junior (12-16yrs) categories, to the person who raised the most money and to the best dressed team. Participants are encouraged to run in fancy dress. It’s just £15 to take part in this fundraising event*. Catherine Collins finds out more T his beautiful, fashionable and stylish city is at the heart of the diamond trade, and its medieval streets, Renaissance monuments and vibrant nightlife ensure that visitors feel both inspired and intrigued by Belgium’s second largest town and best kept secret. Antwerp is a city of green spaces and elegant buildings, dominated by tramways and cycling lanes. Wander through the narrow alleys and expansive squares of the old Flemish town and experience the bustle of life at the Grote Markt [Marketplace] – considered to be one of the most beautiful 14 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2015 palaces in Belgium and home to the truly impressive Gothic masterpiece, the Cathedral of Our Lady. Built in 1351 and 169 years in the making, the cathedral towers over the city from a heavenward reaching height of 400ft and is extremely well preserved with many religious masterpieces adorning the walls, including authentic treasures such as the triptych of the Descent from the Cross by 17th century Dutch master, Rubens – the town’s most famous artist. Rubens is buried at the church of St Jakobs, and more of his art can be admired there, at the Museum of Fine Arts and at Rubenshuis, the painter’s own house. In the centre of the square is the statue of Brabo, which tells the story of the mythical legend that gave the city its name. It is said that Antwerp was terrorized by a giant called Druon Antigoon, who made all the passing ships pay a toll until young Brabo killed the giant, chopped off his hand and threw it into the Scheldt River. Today the hand is a quirky symbol of the history of Antwerp, found on the coat of arms, sculptures and souvenirs, and moulded into sugar cookies and chocolates. SUMMER 2015 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 15 DESTINATION ANTWERP Antwerp boasts the second biggest port in Europe and it is hard to imagine the city without the River Scheldt giving it its international outlook. Stroll along the quays in the city centre to explore the café-filled cobbled lanes, sit under the lights of the promenade and gaze across the water, watching the sunset reflecting on the ripples. Allow the allure of the silhouetted skyline to transport you back to the age of romance and the Victorian images of ladies and gentlemen disembarking from cruise liners in years gone by, which has never left the Port of Antwerp. On a riverside knoll lies Het Steen [The Stone] – a medieval fortress built after the Viking incursions in the early Middle Ages as the first stone fortress 16 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2015 of Antwerp and the city’s oldest building. For centuries Het Steen was used as a prison, but now the building is home to a learning centre for children and is open several days a week to the public. Next to the grandeur of one of the world’s most beautiful art deco train stations is a green oasis where splendid animal statues and striking big-cat mosaics welcome visitors to internationally renowned Antwerp Zoo – home to more than 5000 animals and 950 different species, with a programme to help save animals that are endangered, such as bonobo apes and okapi. The Zoo is one of the oldest in the world and the beautiful buildings and garden have been as monuments and when it was built in 1843 it was just outside of the city’s walls, but Antwerp has grown so much it is now in the centre. No visit to Antwerp would be complete without admiring its diamonds and many great jewellers source their diamonds in the city, including Cartier and Van Cleef. At the Diamond Museum of the Province of Antwerp, discover the story of the long and glittering relationship with diamonds which has earned the city much of its economic prosperity. A visit to the museum will tell you all you have ever wanted to know about these shimmering little stones, and allows you to follow each stage of the process of their transformation into a beautiful jewel with a trail of images, light and sound effects. We have selected local treasures and mouth-watering trips to suit your foodie taste. Tara Russell finds out more SUMMER 2015 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 21 DESTINATION FOODIE’S DELIGHT F rom eating wild boar stew in the rugged mountains of Corsica to taking a gastronomic tour of the globe in Italy’s trendiest city, there are lots of fabulous places to visit for the foodies. Milan Milan is without a doubt Italy’s trendiest city which attracts both fashionistas and foodies from across the world. But this year gourmands would be crazy to miss Milan when it hosts Expo Milano 2015 on a subject close to any Italian’s heart – food. The 20 million expected visitors will be able to take a gastronomic tour of the globe when more than 140 countries will discuss food and specifically issues surrounding sustainable agriculture and global nutrition. From May to October, the 1.1 million sq metre fairgrounds will be laid out like a classical Roman city with avenues, a canal and a huge artificial lake surrounded by pavilions. Explore the ‘future food district’, watch cooking demos, taste each nation’s best dishes, learn about food and gastronomic traditions across the world, wander through a plaza full of street musicians and dance performers or indulge in winetastings. While in the city, don’t miss Milanese favourite cotoletta, buttery veal wrapped in breadcrumbs. Corsica It’s a magical island with a turquoise coastline, isolated sandy coves, craggy cliffs, thick forests and majestic mountains. But though affectionately called The Mountains in the Sea and Island of Beauty, Corsica’s quality wines and great food make the island ideal for a gourmet break. Situated off the south coast of France, south-west coast of Italy and north of Sardinia and just a two-hour flight from 22 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2015 Left: Corsica Greek Orthodox Church at Cargese. Top: Kathedrale La Seu Palma de Mallorca. Above: Ferragudo harbour, Algarve Southampton Airport, the Corsican cuisine is as varied as the island is in its contrasting scenery. Relying heavily on seasonal produce, the locals take their food and wine seriously so restaurants tend to be high quality. It’s the herbs – thyme, marjoram, basil, fennel and rosemary of the maquis – the dense scrub covering lowland that lends the island’s cuisine its distinctive flavours. Game, mainly stews of wild boar but also roast woodcock, partridge and wood pigeon are considered something of a speciality in the mountainous regions while freshly caught seafood like red mullet, bream and crayfish is eaten along the coast. Chestnuts are a Corsican staple not to miss as are cured meats and savoury cheeses which are served on most menus. A welcome accompaniment to Corsica’s delicious cuisine is a glass of one of the excellent wines that are produced locally from the abundant vineyards, which sell a lot of their production direct to the public and often welcome visitors without an appointment making winetasting a must for any foodie itinerary on the island. Algarve Think Algarve and probably sundrenched, historical villages and redcliffed coastline will come to mind. But this region of Portugal is the perfect foodie destination for those after lovingly prepared local dishes. At the top end of the scale the region is dotted with impressively plush and Michelinstarred restaurants such as Ocean at the luxurious Vila Vita and the only doublestarred Michelin eatery in Portugal at the beautiful Vila Joya hotel close to Praia do Gale. However for those who like to dine with the locals, very few places beat southern Portugal for the most memorable traditional regional dishes served fresh, simple and delicious. Highlights include simply grilled fresh seafood and the local speciality of fiery chicken piri-piri which single-handedly put the Algarve firmly on the culinary map. Mallorca Sandy beaches, striking mountains, glorious sunshine and now a real foodie destination, the Balearic island of Mallorca really is one of the world’s most appetising countries. There is a new wave of culinary culture on the island with chefs reviving traditional local dishes and proudly showcasing locally sourced ingredients like fish and shellfish, lamb and pork, fruits and vegetables, nuts, oils and wines. Gastronomic experiences range from an authentic paella on the beach to rustic roasts in farmhouse restaurants inland and Michelin-standard cuisine in the smarter resorts. Meanwhile Slow Food and the organic movement are rescuing local varieties and livestock breeds from the verge of extinction. The island is swamped with places to eat from cafes and tapas bars to old style cellers (old converted wine cellars specialising in traditional cuisine). Cellers, the best of which are found in market towns like Inca and Sineu, are great places to go to try Mallorcan classics such as llom amb col, pork wrapped in cabbage or frit mallorqui, fried offal. Fo r W On i ha t 's n Ha m p se e p s h i re age 3 8 SUMMER 2015 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 25 CRUISING NEWS CRUISINGNEWS I T WAS “Strictly” a day that will never be forgotten when the Queen visited Southampton to name the world’s newest cruise ship. Bottles of bubbly fizzed, a blizzard of multi-coloured confetti filled the air, the sun shone and the stars of favourite television programme Strictly Come Dancing tripped the light fantastic during an exclusive royal command performance for the christening of P&O Cruises’ Britannia. Making sure that the dancers were putting their best foot forward was Strictly judge and former prima ballerina Darcy Bussell together with show presenter Tess Daly. At one point top dancers Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite emerged from the audience and ripped off their dress and suit to dramatically reveal glamorous dancing clothes to lead a large group of young dancers through an energetic routine on the dockside. The Queen, wearing a peach coloured dress, coat and hat, together with the Duke of Edinburgh, was seen tapping her feet when the massed bands of the Irish Guards and the Royal Marines marched on to the quayside in front of hundreds of specially invited guests. 26 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2015 After being greeted by Captain Paul Brown, master of the giant, 141,000-ton Britannia, the Queen was invited to officially name the ship by saying the famous words: “I name this ship Britannia...” and then sending a giant bottle of British sparkling wine, equivalent to 20 normal-sized ones, crashing against the ship’s enormous hull. The bottle smashed to smithereens, spraying wine across the vessel’s name, as spectators, including many showbusiness celebrities and sporting personalities, together with five famous television chefs and wine experts, roared their approval and Captain Brown called for “three cheers” for the Queen. When the bottle smashed against the side of Britannia, P&O Cruises continued its theme of all things British by using sparkling wine from the Wiston Estate Winery in West Sussex. After the ceremony the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were escorted on board Britannia, where the royal couple met officers and members of the crew as they were given a brief conducted tour of the ship, the biggest vessel ever built solely for British passengers. One of the most unexpected hits of the ceremony, hosted by comedian and actor Rob Brydon, was a rousing performance by the bagpipers and musicians of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, who brought spectators to their feet with their version of Queen’s We Will Rock You. Britannia is the second ship in the current Southampton-based fleet of P&O Cruises vessels to be named by the Queen, as back in April 1995 she officially christened Oriana, which many believe heralded the development of Britain’s modern cruise industry, which has its centre in the port. David Dingle, chairman of P&O Cruises, told the audience that the naming of Britannia was one of the company’s proudest moments in its 178-year history. He said: “Today’s Britain has emerged as a place of style and sophistication, optimism and excitement and Britannia has been envisaged to capture that spirit. “We embarked on this journey four years ago and with my team it has been a proud honour to see Britannia through from concept to reality. “We have created a truly incredible ship, which could only have been borne out of insight, passion and the remarkable cruising heritage of P&O Cruises.” DESTINATION REASONS TO GO TO... Giant’s Causeway With a landscape of dramatic cliffs and views across the North Atlantic Ocean to Scotland, the Giant’s Causeway is Ireland’s only World Heritage Site. According to legend, the 37,000 basalt columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. For centuries the Giant’s Causeway has inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it. Walk across the old fisherman’s bridge, climb the Shepherd’s Steps and hike along the cliff-top trail to get a bird’s eye view of the beautiful causeway coast and one of the great natural wonders of the world. James Johnson finds out more SUMMER 2015 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT 31 DESTINATION BORDEAUX S o what does Bordeaux have to offer the curious traveller? Well, for a start it’s classified as a “City of Art and History” and contains more than 360 historic monuments, second only to Paris. Even thinking of the name brings to mind strolls along old-fashioned but beautiful streets, magnificent old churches, and stunning water scenery. It’s on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it’s has one of the largest squares in Europe, a 200-year-old neoclassical theatre, and beautiful churches and cathedrals. But all that can wait - what about the wine? The city’s name itself is synonymous with wine of all varieties. Recipes and tricks of the trade have been handed down for generations, to the delight of connoisseurs. There are currently more than 7,300 chateaux in the region, producing more than 10,000 different wines of every vintage. It brings in an astonishing amount of money, with more than two billion euros made each year. It is estimated that a mind-boggling 450 million bottles are made each year - all in all, 1.5 per cent of the entire world’s wine. Frankly, the choice can be almost overwhelming but tourists and natives can seek information and instruction from guides. A massive variety of tours are available taking in a number of stunning locations including Saint-Emilion, Médoc, and even wine cruises. Others offer the chance to wander round Margaux and discover great Cabernets and Merlots. The length and destination of these trips can be customised to your choice, so whether you just want to dip into a half-day excursion or immerse yourself for three days or more, all options are open. For example, 33Tour offer a four-day and three-night trip to vineyards in Margaux, Pauillac, St Emilion, Pornerol and Sauternes, or a ‘vintage’ trip lasting two days and including transport in a private minivan. Meanwhile BD Tours gives the chance of touring vineyards by car, on foot, or for those really daring travellers, horseback. The firm promises views of beautiful landscapes and an increased knowledge of the different varieties and tastes of wine. If you’ve ever fancied playing winemaker for the day then French Wine Adventures is worth a look. And for those who are keen on getting some good exercise as well as enjoying fine wines, Bordo Vino Tours offer wine and bike tours around the region. But what to do when you’ve had your fill of delicious, intoxicating reds and whites? You’ll be pleased to know there is a great deal of choice. 32 SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT SUMMER 2015 The enormous Place des Quinconces, which contains two 21-metre columns and a number of sculptures, was laid out in 1820 to prevent rebellion against the city. In the past the city has gathered a reputation of having seen better days. It has since been dragged into the modern world with the installation of trams, restoration of acres of riverbank, and improvements to fading buildings. And finally, there can be few sights in Europe more stunning than the reflective pool of the Place de la Bourse, designed in the 18th century by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. The easiest way to get to the city is by plane, and Flybe have weekly direct flights from Southampton Airport to Bordeaux and Bergerac between May and September.
