Central California Fellowship of AA By The Way 9960 Business Park Dr. Ste. 110, Sacramento, CA 95827 www.aasacramento.org 916-454-1771 MARCH 2015 A God I Don’t Need To Understand Newly sober, it seemed that AA members solved their drinking problem by using God, but I knew little about the substance of whatever that was, save many drunken bar room “religious” conversations; the TV preachers left me even more bewildered. Perhaps I fell into the category of an agnostic—that is to say without knowledge of God. So what to do? My case was different! Yet, the Big Book told me: “Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly." I certainly related to page 44 of the Big Book: "If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic." Yes, that was me—never a drinking year passed but what I had quit drinking forever, only to wake up with a two-inch thick tongue, mouth on fire and my foggy head swearing never again! Quitting drinking did not work for me! Again, what to do? Central Office will be CLOSED Monday March 30th Clear Ideas Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our personal adventures before and after make clear three pertinent ideas: (a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives. (b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism. (c) That God could and would if He were sought. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 60 CCFAA I still have no intellectual understanding of God, nor do I need one, because the AA program has allowed me to feel its waxing and waning in an inexplicable, yet mysteriously intuitive manner. I believe this is what the Big Book implies by the phrase: “Great Reality deep within.” I have not had to drink since those early days. Thank God for the slogan: “Stick around until the miracle happens. Dr. Bob tells us: “Your Heavenly Father will never let you down!” Bob S. Selfishness What’s inside? Master Calendar Speaker Meetings Group News Special Events Birthdays Minutes Treasurer’s Report Group Contributions Happily, the Big Book explained that when those alkies before me were even willing to believe in a greater power—whatever that may be—they got results! (p. 46). So, I simply exclaimed: I believe! I believe! . . . and started praying to whatever mystery God was. I thanked Him many times every day that hadn’t drank. This contact, meager as it was, gave me sufficient confidence that AA was going to work for me—indeed it did! About a year later I had a release, of sorts, and began to realize that I was no longer plagued by that miserable “drinking thinking” that had been my unwelcome companion for over twenty drunken years—it has never returned! 2-3 4 4-5 5 6-8 11-14 16-17 18 So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making. They arise out of ourselves, and the alcoholic is an extreme example of self-will run riot, though he usually doesn't think so. Above everything, we alcoholics must be rid of this selfishness. We must, or it kills us! God makes that possible. Office Manager’s Report, Manager’s Report February 17, 2015 1. The alarm system cellular communicator has been upgraded. No costs involved. 2. Our AT&T phone cost will be reduced by $65-$85 per month because will be migrating to an All for Less bundle that moves our ISP to fiber optics. We have negotiated for lower rates and 360 Tech Support at no additional charge. 3. The contracts for the 2015 annual picnic have been signed and the cost of the picnic space is $249.60 and the softball field rental cost is $407.20. 4. 4th Quarter and annual payroll taxes and returns have been filed and 2014 annual wages & tax statements have been distributed. 5. 4th Quarter Sales Tax return and payment have been completed. 6. On January 27, 2015 we had an unscheduled compliance review from the Board of Equalization under the statewide Compliance and Outreach Program. Renewal certificates arrive on 2/14 and we will start to mail the certificates and invoices this week. Thank you in advance for your patience. Rae W., OM E. Treasurer’s Report – Tom W Explained the printed Income/Expense Report for those new to the Delegates Meeting. In general all the numbers are positive: group contributions, Faithful Fivers, literature and medallion sales are already ahead of the budgeted figures. Remember that the pro-rated budget column is one-twelfth of the total budgeted amount and some groups make contributions after the end of the year so January figures are frequently higher. One expense to note is that our NCCAA liaison was unaware that we had monies budgeted for his use at conferences, so he presented two years of expenses for past conferences. In all, we are off to a great start for 2015. F. Special Needs Chairperson’s Report – Matt C There were two calls this month: 1. A hearing impaired/ASL request. The requestor did not respond to two follow up calls but I have received information form the CNIA (Area 07) special needs committee to coordinate with future calls of this nature. 2. Outreach for a man who was homebound after being released from the hospital for heart surgery. Took a meeting out to this house. G. TeleService Chairperson’s Report – Frank D The phones are being answered and the shifts are being filled. I’m a little behind in the paperwork. I’m working on it. H. We had our first Web/Tech Committee Meeting Saturday 02/14/15. In attendance: John C. (Chair) Katya (Co-Chair), and Rae W. Not present: Liz, Karina, Kevin First order of business was to more appropriately call the committee "Web/Tech Committee" to encompass all technologies for Central Office but with an emphasis on Web presence for CCFAA. Web site and hosting password changes have been completed and properly stored by Central Office Mgr. We are going to work on the building the meeting list and office operations database simultaneously so that information entered in one place updates throughout. This will eliminate many repetitive tasks for CO staff. We will be adding existing data into our new database as soon as John finishes working on a form to simplify the input to allow more people to help with data entry. We have a working prototype of the next iteration of the online Meeting list. There is very little data in it as of yet. It is for testing and proof of concept only. Most future meetings of the Web/Tech Committee will likely take place virtually to make it easier for people to attend because everyone involved will need to have some knowledge of internet and web. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Discussion of 2015 Budget Amendment Proposal We discussed the budget amendment to increase the manager’s salary line item by $5,000. The manager has done an exemplary job with cutting costs and maintaining services. She has not had a salary increase since 2012. In the last few years the CCF has not been financially able to offer a raise. While we don’t have a recent salary comparison, she still does not make the comparable salary from the 2008 survey. When the budget was first worked up in September 2014 we didn’t foresee having the inflow of cash that occurred, thus allowing us to offer an increase. The Office Operations Committee fully supports this increase. VII. New Business No new business. VIII. Exhaustion - Allowing oneself to become overly tired; usually associated with work addiction as an excuse for not facing personal frustrations. 2. Dishonesty - Begins with pattern of little lies; escalated to self-delusion and making excuses for not doing what's called for. 3. Impatience - I want what I want NOW. Others aren't doing what I think they should or living the way I know is right. 4. Argumentative - No point is too small or insignificant not to be debated to the point of anger and submission. 5. Depression - All unreasonable, unaccountable despair should be exposed and discussed, not repressed: what is the "exact nature" of those feelings? 6. Frustration - Controlled anger/resentment when things don't go according to our plans. Lack of acceptance. See #3. 7. Self-pity - Feeling victimized, put-upon, used, unappreciated: convinced we are being singled out for bad luck. 8. Cockiness - Got it made. Know all there is to know. Can go anywhere, including frequent visits just to hang-out at bars, boozy parties. 9. Complacency - Like #8, no longer sees value of daily program, meetings, contact with other alcoholics, (especially sponsor!), feels healthy, on top of the world, things are going well. Heck may even be cured! 10. Expecting too much of others - Why can't they read my mind? I've changed, what's holding them up? If they just do what I know is best for them? Leads to feeling misunderstood, unappreciated. See #6. 11. Letting up on disciplines - Allowing established habits of recovery - meditations, prayer, spiritual reading, AA contact, daily inventory, meetings - to slip out of our routines; allowing recovery to get boring and no longer stimulating for growth. Why bother?! 12. Using mood-altering chemicals - May have a valid medical reason, but misused to help avoid the real problems of impending alcoholic relapse. 13. Wanting too much - Setting unrealistic goals: not providing for short-term successes; placing too much value on material success, not enough on value of spiritual growth. 14. Forgetting gratitude - Because of several listed above, may lose sight of the abundant blessings in our everyday lives: too focused on # 13. 15. "It can't happen to me." - Feeling immune; forgetting what we know about the disease of alcoholism and its progressive nature. 16. Omnipotence - A combination of several attitudes listed above; leads to ignoring danger signs, disregarding warnings and advice from fellow members. -- Akron Intergroup News, December 1998 CCFAA March 2015 CONCEPT III As a traditional means of creating and maintaining a clearly defined working relation between the groups, the Conference, the AA General Service Board and its several service organizations, staff, committees and executives, and of thus insuring their effective leadership, it is here suggested that we endow each of these elements of world service with a traditional “Right of Decision.” As background for this Concept, you should be familiar with the Conference Charter and the Bylaws of the General Service Board, both of which are found in The AA Service Manual. For, except for the specific directions in these documents, every trusted servant and every AA entity – at all levels of service – has the right “to decide…how they will interpret and apply their own authority and responsibility to each particular problem or situation as it arises.” That is, they can “decide which problems they will dispose of themselves and upon which matters they will report, consult, or ask specific directions.” This is the essence of “The Right of Decision.” But this right also means the Fellowship must have trust in its “trusted servants.” If the groups instruct their G.S.R.s rather than giving them a “Right of Decision,” then the area conference is hamstrung. If the G.S.R.s instruct the area delegates rather than giving them a “Right of Decision,” then the General Service Conference is hamstrung. As Bill points out, “our Conference delegates are primarily the servants of A.A. as they should … cast their votes … according to the best dictates of their own judgment and conscience at that time.” Similarly, if the General Service Board, acting through its subsidiary boards, “were to attempt to manage” the General Service Office and the A.A. Grapevine “in detail, then … the staff members … would quickly become demoralized; they would be turned into buck-passers and rubber stamps; their choice would be to rebel and resign, or to submit and rot.” Bill warns against using “The Right of Decision” as an excuse for failure to make the proper reports of actions taken or for exceeding a clearly defined authority, or for failing to consult the proper people before making an important decision. But he concludes: “Our entire AA program rests squarely upon the principle of mutual trust. We trust God, we trust AA, and we trust each other.” (P-8) The Twelve Concepts for World Service illustrated Thought to Ponder . . . Humility is not a station we arrive at; it's a way of traveling. Just for laughs… The car sped off the highway, went through the guard rail, rolled down a cliff, bounced off a tree and finally shuddered to a stop. A passing motorist, who had witnessed the entire accident, helped the miraculously unharmed driver out of the wreck. "Good lord, mister," he gasped, "Are you drunk?" "Of course," said the man, brushing the dirt from his suit. "What the hell do you think I am ... a stunt driver?"
