Job Description
THE ORGANIZATION
Asian Americans United (AAU) was founded in 1985 as a Philadelphia based nonprofit organization
dedicated to building leadership in Asian American communities to strengthen local neighborhoods and
unite against oppression.
AAU has worked in Philadelphia’s Asian American communities and in broader multiracial coalitions
around quality public education, youth leadership, anti-Asian violence, immigrant rights, and folk arts
and cultural nurturance.
Among AAU’s accomplishments are: the initiation and monitoring of a legal settlement with the School
District of Philadelphia to improve services to immigrant students; development of hundreds of leaders
through the Community Youth Leadership Project and the Asian American Youth Workshop; creating
and sustaining the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival; and founding the Folk Arts – Cultural Treasures
(FACTS) Charter School.
AAU is headquartered at the FACTS Charter School at 1023 Callowhill Street. It is a tax-exempt
organization supported by a broad range of private donations including individual contributions and
foundation grants
THE POSITION
Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the lead staff person for AAU. The executive
director provides leadership and strategic direction to the organization, promoting the goals of AAU,
serving as the public representative of AAU, and working in concert with the broader progressive
community.
REPONSIBILITIES









In concert with the Board, establishes and implements program priorities and direction
Oversees general operations and financial management of the organization
Works with the Board and staff to establish specific goals and strategies
Maintains current funder relationships and develops relationships with potential new funders
Supervises and provides direction for administrative and program staff as needed and as is
fiscally possible
Keeps abreast of trends within, and collaborates with various sectors of, the Asian community
Promotes a public presence of the organization, and works in alliance with other progressive
sectors of the social change community
Has responsibility for strategic planning of the organization
Serves as the public face of the organization as occasions require
QUALIFICATIONS










Demonstrated leadership abilities working collaboratively with diverse groups of people with
the capacity to move them toward shared goals
Strong identification with the goals and mission of AAU particularly its commitment to social
justice
Strong communications skills including writing in various formats and speaking to a broad range
of audiences
Particular ability and experience in working with young people
Ability to listen well and intensively
Fundraising skills at various levels including grant writing and the ability to deal personally with
funders
Capacity to deal with program planning and organizational budgeting
Broad familiarity with social justice movements and institutions and the ability to work in
coalition with them
Bi-lingual proficiency in an Asian language would be preferred
A minimum of five years of leadership experience in non-profit environment
