Don’t miss our annual Branch

May 16, at the home of our president,
Marsha Gochenour. Great food will be
provided by board members and we will
discuss our future as a branch and what
kinds of meeting we might like to see.
Complete the Program Evaluation on
page 5, bring it with you to the meeting,
and be prepared to talk about where we
are going as a Branch. If you cannot
attend send the form to Rosemary Green.
President’s Message
Treasurer’s Report
Marsha Gochenour
Thanks to all the members who
helped make the Woman of the Year
reception a great success. Dr. Cheryl
Thompson-Stacy was an enthusiastic
and appreciative honoree. AAUW has
so many ties with both her and Lord
Fairfax Community College it was
destined that she would be recognized
as WOY. A special thanks to member
Liv Heggoy for Dr. Cheryl’s
introduction and taking care of the
news release and press coverage.
Kudos also go to Betty Jo and Myron
Dickerson for spearheading the
refreshment committee.
Congratulations to Rosemary
Green who was revealed as our
Named Gift Honoree. Her sparkling
and inquisitive mind has led our
programming for the last two years, as
well as the next two years. She is a
great asset to our branch. See our
program evaluation in this newsletter.
There are a dozen of us heading
to Charlottesville for the state
conference this month. Mary and
Martha have been working on
registrations and name badges
beforehand. The rest of us have been
assigned duties the day of the
conference such as greeters, workshop
guides, meeting aides, etc. If anyone
else has an interest in attending, please
contact me ASAP.
Since we are not having a
Winchester branch meeting in April,
consider joining one of our monthly
special interest groups. The book club
is meeting April 20. You do not have
to have read the book in order to enjoy
the pot luck dinner. Or just come out
to eat at Carrabba’s on April 27. This
is a purely social time to share each
other’s company. And don’t forget our
Winchester Little Theatre fund raiser
on May 6th.

The Signature of All Things
by Elizabeth Gilbert
The insatiably curious Alma Whittaker,
daughter of a scrappy botanical baron,
spends most of her life confined to her
family estate in Philadelphia, yearning
for a life of greater passion and liberty.
She channels her desires into botany,
thrilling to the miniature universe of
moss in the forests surrounding her
house, developing a new taxonomy that
becomes a theory encompassing all
living things, parallel to Darwin’s. Then
she finally turns herself loose on the
world. Beautifully written and imbued
with a reverence for science and for
learning. A rich novel by the author of
Eat, Pray, Love.

Voter Guide
This is the fourth year for AAUW of Virginia’s One Member/One Vote initiative. It is very important
that members participate because we need a quorum of 7 percent for the election. Please take the time to
vote as a responsible AAUW of Virginia member. This year you will be voting on candidates for state
office. The Voter Guide is available on the state website (http://aauwva.aauw.net/).
Verify your email and mailing address in your AAUW national profile
Voting will be made available online to all AAUW of Virginia members with email addresses. The email
address that AAUW National has in your profile in the Member Services Database (MSD) will be the
address used to notify you to vote. New members who have joined by April 1 will be eligible to vote in
the 2015 elections.
Requesting paper ballots - Deadline is April 21
In order to save money, we have instituted an opt-in rather than an opt-out process for receiving a paper
ballot. Members may request a paper ballot between February 2 and April 21 by calling Mary K. Johnson
at 703/913-9490, emailing to [email protected], or writing to her at 7703 Griffin Pond Court,
Springfield, VA 22153. She will need each member’s AAUW ID number, branch, and address. Member
ID numbers are printed in the Winchester yearbook.
Watch for your voting instructions in late April and early May
Do not ignore emails and mailings in April and May! The instructions provided to you at that time will
include the deadlines for voting. All votes will be returned to and tallied by AAUW National so they will
not be seen by AAUW of Virginia members. Questions concerning the process of voting can be directed
to the AAUW of Virginia Voting and Elections Committee (V&EC) at [email protected].

Rosemary Green
Named Gift Honoree
The Winchester Branch is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2015 Named Gift is Rosemary
Green.
We are so fortunate that Rosemary has blessed the Winchester Branch by providing leadership for
exemplary programs for the past two years. She has also agreed to serve as Co-Vice President for
Programs for another two years! Her engaging personality and her spirit of inquiry have secured many
interesting speakers and provided the Winchester Area with two excellent Political Forums for the
November elections.
Rosemary Green was born and raised in Blacksburg, Virginia, a university town of the highest order.
Many generations of Rosemary’s immediate and extended family attended what was then VPI. They have
all gone on to contribute greatly to the culture and quality of life on campus and in the greater
community, making contributions in education, the sciences, and of course, in agricultural engineering
and foremost in citizenship and community service.
Rosemary also attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts
as an English major, but all who know her recognize an unlimited interest in all subjects, academic or
otherwise. Her interests cover all aspects of learning and understanding—the grand educational
experiment in general.
.
She received a Master of Science in Library Science from The University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. Library Science was a natural fit for graduate studies embracing the enormous wealth of human
understanding. Rosemary did find time to focus on a special interest in musicology and dance—passions
of a lifetime.
Leaving academia, Rosemary contributed to the shared search for knowledge in several hospital and
community libraries including the Handley Regional Library. However, the call to teaching brought her
back to the campus of Shenandoah University where she is currently on the faculty as a Librarian with
the Graduate Studies program. She is uniquely qualified for this position having received her PhD from
Deakin University in Victoria, Australia.
Rosemary’s contributions to learning make a very long but quite interesting list. Her papers and
publications support new and proven methods of learning while her application of her own research
touches on an endless variety of topics and focused student interest. She is truly a ‘renaissance professor
of education.’ Her writings encompass digital information literacy, faculty-librarian collaboration,
research anxiety, and distance education.
She shares a custom built “Craftsman Style” home in Stephens City with her husband Ron Heath, also an
artist. She also shares her home with three wonderful cats, some who insist on helping her at the
computer when grading or writing papers. What skills the kittens lack in typing, they more than make up
for in social and therapeutic attention to this woman who does so much for others.
Congratulations, Rosemary!

Opening Remarks
AAUW Woman of the Year 2015
Welcome to the 32nd annual Woman of the Year Reception
We are the Winchester Branch of the American Association of University Women.
Previous winners attending tonight: June Wilmot, Helen Zebarth, and Rhoda Kriz
Here is a little bit about AAUW and WOY with one commercial interruption.
The American Association of University Women is a local, state, and national nonprofit, nonpartisan
organization that has been a leading voice for equity for women and girls since 1881. Our programs
include:
Education: We support public education that promotes gender equity, fairness, and diversity,
particularly in STEM fields.
Advocacy: In 2014 our Lobby corps volunteers made over 1,200 visits to congressional offices to lobby
on bills and issues such as paycheck fairness act, sexual assault in the military, and the healthy families
act.
Research: We analyze gender equity issues in education and the workplace with topics including
Women in Community College, and Sexual Harassment at Schools.
Leadership: We provide leadership development opportunities for members through workshops and
conferences. In April 2015 the Winchester branch is co-hosting, with the Harrisonburg branch, the VA
state conference in Charlottesville. For college women, we co-host NCCWSL – National Conference for
College Women Student Leaders.
Philanthropy: AAUW is one of the largest sources of funding for graduate and post-graduate women.
National and international awards of $3.7 million dollars were made in the 2014-2015 academic year.
Locally, we award a scholarship to a Lord Fairfax Community College student who is returning to school
for a degree, or to improve her workplace skills.
*** COMMERCIAL ***
Our Winchester Little Theatre fund raiser will occur on May 6th, 2015. All are encouraged to attend and
bring a friend, or two, or three.
WOY history:
The Winchester Business and Professional Women (BPW) started the Woman of the Year program in
1983. When the local club folded, several of us that were members of both organizations wanted to keep
the WOY going. BPW endorsed AAUW taking over in 2009. We moved the reception to March for
National Women’s History Month and have been strong ever since.
