CO-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy first week of spring! Thank you to all of those
members who helped make our Fashion Show such a
success. Clare Christiansen and her committee did a
wonderful job this year. Helen Bates organized the ticket
sales and we had another sell out crowd. The models were
lovely and Jill from Casual House did a wonderful job
describing the outfits. I especially want to mention the
Interest Groups and individual members who donated
items for the raffle and silent auction. Thank you all.
The Women in History presentation at our March Branch
Meeting was both entertaining and educational. Thank you
to all the members who presented to the 5th grade
classrooms, our branch meeting and the Friends of the
Library meeting on March 19th. This was Sarah
Mackaman’s first year as Chair and she organized it
beautifully.
Angie Homola has received all of our scholarship
applications from the three High Schools and will be

Scholar Recognition Reception on
April 14th.
This year we will be meeting our STEM
students, our scholarship recipients and
the new group of Tech Trek students. This
reception is our only meeting in April and
we want all the participants to feel
welcomed and celebrated. Please make
every effort to attend. If you are
interested in bringing a sweet or savory
food item, please contact Carol Rice for
details. We look forward to seeing
everyone there!

Trudy Sundberg Memorial Lecture
Series Fundraiser
Trudy was a charter member of AAUW,
Whidbey Island. She was passionate
about education and lifelong learning.
After she passed away in 2013, her good
friend and neighbor, Marshall Goldberg,
established the Trudy J. Sundberg
Memorial Lecture Series. There will be
a luncheon to benefit the Trudy J.
Sundberg Memorial Lecture Series on
April 24th at 11:30am at Useless Bay
Country Club in Langley. Bob Whitsitt,
former President of the Seattle Seahawks
and President and General Manager of
the Seattle Supersonics and Portland
Trailblazers will be the featured speaker.
Tickets are $100 ($80 tax deductible) and
can be purchased at

purpose of this fund is to underwrite a
lecture series that will honor the memory
of Trudy Sundberg by bringing eminent
speakers to Whidbey Island, establishing
an annual event for our community.

2015 Tech Trek Scholarships
The Tech Trek Committee has reviewed the
applications and thirteen girls will be
interviewed the week of March 23. The
selections will be made April 2 and the five
names will be submitted to AAUW State. We all
will be greeting them at our April 14th Scholars
Night!

Showcase of the Arts
Our annual juried art show for
Island high school students,
will be held at the Coupeville
Library on Friday, May 1st and
Saturday, May 2nd from
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There
will be a reception on Friday
evening from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
for the students, their families,
friends and teachers. It will be
open to the public,
refreshments will be
served and the awards
will be presented to the
winners. This is a
wonderful show that
includes paintings,
photography, small
sculpture, jewelry and
pottery. There will be a
special photography
award given by Nancy
Hodges in honor of her
father. AAUW
members are

Legislative Report
AAUW of Washington State
The Appropriations
Committee heard the
Reproductive Health Act and
passed it out of committee on
February 26th.
AAUW has been having good
conversations with legislators
about the Equal Pay
Opportunity Act --unsurprisingly the issue
of the gender pay
disparity has a real
resonance with many
legislators, Republicans
and Democrats alike.

several bills that would
impose both civil and
criminal penalties for
distributing intimate
images of another
without their consent. It
is hopeful that will come
to the floor and receive
partisan support.
