MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES &
MACHINE TOOL SUPPLY COMPANIES
ACCI: MANUFACTURERS CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC
It is not going to come as a surprise when I say that if you are in
manufacturing then there is a good chance that you are doing it
tough or at the least much tougher than you did a few years ago.
We have all been affected by this dramatic down-turn; if
manufacturing suffers then machine tool suppliers feel the impact
also.
Australia’s manufacturing sector is in a state of cautious optimism, with
manufacturers expecting the general business situation in the next six
months to be better than the previous half-year, the latest Australian
Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Westpac Survey of Industrial
Trends has found.
The March-quarter Survey of Industrial Trends, which asks questions on
current and expected conditions for Australian manufacturers across 12
sectors and all states, comes at a time of a falling Australian dollar and
falling interest rates, easing cost pressures. The survey found a net
positive 8% of responses on the question of whether the general
business situation in Australia will improve over the next six months,
though this is down on a net positive 27% in the previous Decemberquarter survey. When asked about their own firm, respondents were
even more optimistic, with a net positive of 13% of respondents saying
they expect their firm’s profitability to improve in the next 12 months.
This reflects a modest but continuing underlying positive trend,
following a 23% net positive result the previous quarter. The Reserve
Bank’s decision to lower interest rates in February to 2.25% was a
welcome development, benefiting the manufacturing sector. It is
widely expected that the Reserve Bank will lower rates further in
coming months. Manufacturers say they have room to grow, with a net
13% saying they are operating below normal capacity utilisation. The
biggest single factor limiting the increase in production was orders,
accounting for 62% of responses. Respondents to the survey said they
expected in the coming year to increase capital expenditure on
buildings (net positive 8%) and plant and machinery (net positive 12%).
These investment indicators, which initially turned positive in late 2014,
suggest greater confidence among firms may translate into additional
spending.
Even with improvement in the industry machine tool suppliers are
the last in line to see any benefits, as companies will already have
excess machinery that can handle any increase in their production.
Further to this most companies will wait until they can see a long
term improvement before they make any further decisions to
invest in new machinery. Because of this, it is more important than
ever that if you are currently considering any new equipment, that
you also consider the long term viability of the machine tool
supplier.
I have been involved in the supply of machine tools for over 30
years; during that time companies marketed a very specialised
range of machines and this was not considered to be an issue; new
technology and a healthy manufacturing sector were able to
support this type of limited product range. However, with the
overall decline in manufacturing in Australia, there has been a
similar decline in the market for the machines that these
companies offer.
When I made the decision to start my own company, it was very
clear that we needed to be able to adopt a structure whereby we
could offer a diverse range of machinery; we also needed to be
able to supply to all sectors of the manufacturing industry. This is
reflected in the machinery that we offer to the metal cutting,
sheet metal and fabrication industries in New South Wales.
Manufacturers sounded a note of caution on wages growth, with a net
10% saying they expected their firm’s next wage enterprise deal to
produce annual rises less than in place under the previous deal. “This
latest survey shows that Australian manufacturers are optimistic about
the general business situation and their own firm’s future profitability,”
said Kate Carnell AO, CEO of the ACCI. “But firms are still holding back
on making big commitments until they get further momentum. Overall
this is a positive and encouraging survey, with demand and output both
returning positive indicators.”
The ability to offer a diverse range of machine tools to the overall
manufacturing sector creates stability with-in a machine tool
supplier, thus ensuring viability for that supplier in the long term.
The manufacturer can be confident that there will be ongoing
support for the capital equipment that is purchased.
In closing, it is increasingly important that the next time you are
considering the purchase of a new machine that you also
investigate the long term viability of the company that is offering
the equipment.

NEW DESIGN EVERISING COLUMN SAWS
COMING SOON ….
A very exciting development is happening with the Everising range of
column saws, specifically the H-360HANC and H-460HANC which are
360mm and 460mm diameter capacity fully automatic straight cut
machines.
1.
The design is changing and now we will be offering the
Everising "HB" with an integrated double column design which
will make the machine design more rigid and improve overall
cutting performance. The design will also offer a one piece
sacrificial cutting plate that will be integrated into the moving
clamping vice so there will be no need to remove the traditional
cutting blocks hence saving time. The motor will now be a
direct drive system installed directly into the gear box giving
better torque. The standard "HA" series will still remain
available for a more cost effective solution!
2.
The Everising H-360HA/HB & H-460HA/HB saws on order for
stock will be coming in with an enclosed design cover for added
safety and also a LED light built into the cover which will have a
3 colour system. This will simply tell you when the machine is
working, stopped or in error by the colour of the lights on the
machine.
Leadwell BC-600
The Leadwell BC-600 represents the latest and greatest in technology
now available in 5 axis machining, this 5 axis machining centre not only
offers a B axis rotary head but also an in-built rotary table for complete
flexibility to machine any work piece. The Leadwell BC-600 uses a
Heidenhain controller which is renowned for being the premium
controller for 5 axis machining. The advantage of this type of machine is
that you can also use it as a normal 3 axis machining centre by not using
the rotary table.
A further addition to the BC range, will be the BC-3000, also with
integrated rotary table and B axis rotary head is anticipated to be
available be end 2015. This will allow for larger work pieces.
