Obituary
James Elliott Smith was born on
July 16, 1936 in Mount Vernon,
Illinois to the late Johnnie O. Smith
and Helen Coleman. He was raised
by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Spears in Mount Vernon,
Illinois.
James, affectionately called Jim,
moved to Detroit, Michigan during
his adolescent years. While in Detroit, Michigan, he completed his high school
education. James later moved to Chicago, Illinois and lived there for a number
of years. In 1973, James moved to Dayton, Ohio and remained there until his
passing. Jim worked for the city of Dayton for 23 years before his retirement.
James had a larger than life personality. He was known for his wisecracking
personality. Until the very end, he maintained his love for jokes and laughter,
cracking jokes with the medical staff and nurses who were helping him. Jim
was also very competitive. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing chess
with his children, golfing, cards, softball, video games, and attending horse
races. James had a habit of talking trash during any and every event that he
was a part of. He would not hesitate to let you know just when, how, and why
he would win. In most cases, he was absolutely right. However, having
learned from the best, his children began to talk trash on their own, and win
more and more against him.
James was also very musically talented. He greatly enjoyed working with and
teaching singers. James played the guitar, bass, drums, and could harmonize
with the best of them. He was also a recording artist and arranged many
original songs. He founded the Stars of Harmony of Chicago, Illinois and the
Gospel Jewels of Dayton, Ohio. He also played guitar for the Swan Mellarks in
Chicago, Illinois, The Spirit of Faith, and the Golden Voices of Harmony in
Dayton, Ohio.
Through the Years
Obituary
While living in Dayton, Jim realized he needed something in his life that he
had not found anywhere else. He accepted Jesus Christ and began to attend
regular church services. James sought a closer relationship with God, and his
walk as a believer evolved accordingly. He began to study the word of God at
Christ Holy Temple and confessed to receiving the Holy Spirit in his home
during a tarrying meeting conducted by his pastor, Bishop Foy Munlin and his
wife. James later attended Mount Olivet Church of God In Christ under Pastor
Ozell Northern. During his tenure there, he served faithfully and played bass.
After further study of the word of God, he found and resolved to keep the
seventh day Sabbath and Holy Festivals, as outlined in the Scriptures. After
this turning point, he attended United House of God under the leadership of
Bishop Harry Calloway and the Late Elect Lady Alcerean Watson. He would
attend services as often as his health would allow. Most recently, he attended
Abundant Grace Church of the Living God under Pastor William Houston, IV.
Jim loved to share the Word of God with others. He wanted everyone to know
about the truth that God had revealed to him, and would send video tapes and
information to others, to share this good news.
James departed this life peacefully on June 2, 2015 at his residence; and he
will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spears, parents, Johnnie Smith and Helen
Coleman, children, Sabrina Smith, Karen Werts, Keith, Kevin, Sheila, and Mark
Smith.
James leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife Nancy Smith;
sister, Mary Ferguson; sons, Dwayne, Stephen, Morgan, Demetrius, and
Carlton Smith, Mark and Marco Shoecraft; daughters, Shalon Smith, Renia
Moman, Carolyn, and Cornicia Harvey; special sons, William Houston IV and
family, and Ben Faircloth, a special daughter, Leeann Robinson; special
friends, Earl Davis and Virginia Yarborough; and a host of grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
