The conference is only a short drive down to Baltimore, MD. This is a great conference that I have been able to attend for the last 3 years. I enjoy getting the opportunity to hear a number of excellent presentations as well as network with those from around the world. They offer group registration pricing so please check out page 6 of our newsletter if you are interested in attending the conference. We are coming down to our final events for this chapter year! All of these are must see events…I’d suggest you register today! March 31st – Corporate Compliance and Ethics Investigation for 2 CPE April 30th – All day event on Forensic Accounting worth 8 CPE’s. June 5th – Annual chapter social at Iron Pigs game I hope you can make all of these upcoming events! They are a great way to earn CPEs and network with fellow fraud fighters in the area. We are now using Eventbrite for event registration. Each ACFE event will have its own Eventbrite link (located in email announcements and newsletters) which will allow you to register. Volume 5, Issue 7 Page 3 March 31 Training Event: Corporate Compliance and Ethics Investigation (2 Ethics CPEs) The training program will start with a review of a corporate compliance program including the importance of an effective program, and how it relates to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines and the whistleblower program. It will also include compliance initiatives involving social media, gifts and entertainment, antitrust and competition, and privacy issues, plus the importance of risk assessment. Breakfast Meeting at Hilton Garden Inn Airport Building upon the foundation of a good understanding of compliance program basics, the presentation will move into the area of mindset and the importance of thinking like a workplace investigator. This section of the presentation will start by providing an understanding of the key purposes of an investigation and the importance of acting with an investigation mindset. While discussing a proper workplace investigation, the presentation will cover the difference between interview and interrogation and the proper utilization of each within a compliance investigation. Standard operating procedures will then be discussed as well as allowable deviations within the workplace. The training will conclude with a participant-involved case study and conclude with a discussion of lessons learned, and a Q&A session. Please click here to Tyrell’s background includes over 13 years as a Senior Federal Law Enforcement Officer with the United States Coast Guard (USCG). He was the team leader for the USCG’s Tactical Anti-Terrorism/Counter-Narcotics Team based out of Staten Island, NY. He was also the lead compliance reviewer for federal compliance reviews focused on training and budget management programs within numerous specialized USCG units throughout the United States. As a result of Tyrell’s vast experience and knowledge base, his expertise was vital in the creation of the USCG’s deployable team standard operating procedures that are still in use today. Have you thought about becoming more involved? Then we need YOU! Do you like to plan events or is there a specific topic you want to hear about? Then help us out as a Governor. Are you good at organization and record keeping? Volunteer as Secretary! Do you want to volunteer, but don’t know in what capacity? Contact our President and we’ll find what fits you best. We’re currently have open positions for the 2015-2016 chapter year as Secretary and Governor. Please consider volunteering your time by serving with us. As chapter Secretary, you will be responsible for preparing, publishing, and maintaining board meeting minutes and (semi)monthly newsletters. You’ll also email chapter announcements to our members. As a Governor, you are responsible for participating in Board Meetings to discuss and vote on events and other chapter items, and assist in planning events for the chapter year. Please note: Volunteers for Secretary and Governor must be a member of the national ACFE organization. Volume 5, Issue 7 Page 8 Meet the Member 1. Provide a brief summary of your education and work experience. I work as a Corporate Investigator with T-Mobile. 2. How long have you been a CFE and why did you decide to obtain your CFE designation? I've been a CFE since October 2010. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the fraud management area after working with a previous employer. I mentioned it to a college friend and she suggested that I Corey Cooper, look into becoming a CFE. T-Mobile 3. What do you enjoy most about your current job? I love taking apart a process and identifying the gaps to help bring awareness to my business partners. 4. What is the most challenging part about your current job? The challenging part is trying to find a balance between meeting the expectations of our customers while building the brand. 5. How has the ACFE affected you professionally? I have made some great connections over the years with people in different industries. Knowledge gathering and sharing has been self rewarding, but most of all has helped me help others. 6. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I love to travel to different cities/countries, spending more time with my family and friends now that I'm back on the east coast. 7.
