KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Barbara Reuer, PhD, MT-BC/L
Dr. Reuer is known internationally for her expertise in music-centered wellness and music therapy. She is a graduate of the
University of Iowa, and has more than 35 years of clinical experience in schools, convalescent facilities, retirement homes,
hospices, medical and psychiatric hospitals and more. She is the Founder and Director of MusicWorx, Inc., a consulting agency and
has established Resounding Joy, Inc., a non-profit organization to provide supportive and healing music environments for adults and
children who are homebound or have special needs. Dr. Reuer has authored and co-authored several books and articles and has
served as President of the National Association of Music Therapy. She has also been the recipient of the American Music Therapy Association’s
national Professional Practice Award in 2000, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
(A) Thinking Outside the Box: Understanding the Impact & Power of Pet Therapy
Lynne Robinson, M.Ed. (PAWS for People)
This session is designed to teach family members and healthcare professionals how to incorporate pet
therapy into interactions with loved ones and clients. Participants will learn the benefits of pet therapy as
well as how to support, encourage, motivate and calm persons with dementia by using the assistance of a
gentle, affectionate pet.
(B) Alzheimer’s Disease Update
Dennis C. Graham, D.O. (Associates in Neurology)
Participants will hear an overview of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s, diagnostic testing, and the
pathology of the disease. Potential therapies and research updates will also be reviewed.
(Recommended for non-professional family caregivers)
(C) Optimizing Nutrition in Persons with Dementia
Mary C. DiBartolo, PhD, RN-BC, CNE (Salisbury University)
This session will provide an overview of nutrition-related problems in older adults with an emphasis on
specific challenges in persons with dementia. The importance of proper nutrition, as well as methods to
optimize intake, including the importance of oral care, will be discussed.
(D) Music Therapy Research Update for Dementia Patients and Caregivers
Barbara Reuer, PhD, MT-BC/L (Resounding Joy, Inc.)
This workshop will share the current “state of the art” in music therapy research and music therapy
practice when working with dementia patients. Techniques for managing stress of caregivers and care
receivers, music resources, and strategies to enhance relationships and promote relaxation will be
discussed. (Recommended for professionals)

With humor as a framework, this engaging session will examine personal caregiver experiences, issues
relating to aging, gaps in services and emerging solutions and trends. Participants will identify and discuss
caregiver stressors and solutions for effective coping.
(Recommended for non-professional family caregivers)
(F) The Prevention of Re-hospitalization for People with Cognitive Impairment
Ilene Warner-Maron, PhD, RN-BC, CWCN, CALA, NHA, FCPP (St. Joseph’s University)
This workshop will focus on the issues of re-hospitalization of persons with dementia. This population
has an increased risk of adverse effects from hospitalization and efforts to decrease re-admissions are
necessary to maintain the safety of these individuals.
