Well, another month has flown by, with the highlight
being the 2015 AMA National Championships. This was
an amazing event run so well by NSW Masters, with a
total of 670 entries, including 63 from the ACT, which is
our highest in recent times away from Canberra. It was
great to see an ACTVAC member in nearly every age
group from the M30 all the way up to the W85. There were
some fantastic performances with lots of medals as well as
some ACT Records and a few Australian Records. It was
also great seeing ACTVAC members, or their partners, out
there helping when they had some free time between
events.
At the AMA Awards Dinner, our own Sue Archer was
awarded the AMA Most Outstanding Performance for her
win at the World Mountain Running Championships in
Austria, a well deserving winner.
On Saturday 9 May, Athletics ACT will be holding
their awards night at Manuka Oval. As this is the 60th
year since Athletics ACT was formed, the awards night is
going to be a celebration of the 60 years of athletics in the
ACT. Athletics ACT are holding the event at Manuka Oval
as it was the spot of the very first Athletics ACT event. As
a lot of our members did start their athletics lives as
members of Athletics ACT, you are welcome to buy a ticket
for the night.
Athletics ACT is also looking for memorabilia of
anything to do with Athletics ACT in those 60 years. If you
want any more information on the awards night, please
contact Athletics ACT on 62534420 or via their website at
www.athleticsact.org.au. I hope to see a lot of the ACT
masters athletics fraternity at this celebration of the
history of Athletics in the ACT.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
On Tuesday 19 May, the 2015 ACTVAC Annual
General Meeting will be held at the Belconnen Soccer
Club, Cnr Springvale Drive & Belconnen Way, Hawker.
Come out and have your say on how the club is run, or
nominate for the main committee where all positions will
be declared vacant, or one of the many sub-committees
that keep this club running. There will also be some
discussion on the re-structuring of the membership fees
that the main committee is proposing. There will also be
some finger food served during the night. I look forward to
seeing everyone there.
There are also some training times available on
Mondays and Thursdays at the new Woden Track between
4:00pm and 5:30pm. It will cost $4 per session and it will
need to be given to Phil Alchin from Woden Little As.
I want to congratulate all of our members who made
the big trip over to France for the Paris Marathon, with
special mention to Maria O’Reilly who set a new W60 ACT
Record for the marathon with a time of 3 hours and 31
minutes.
Hope to see you all at either the AACT Awards dinner
on 9 May or the ACTVAC AGM on 19 May.

Fristad Awards
By Philip White
Audun Fristad Awards for Athletics Excellence
acknowledge our most outstanding men and women
competitors. Recipients may have set Australian or even
World Records, performed several times within the upper
percentages of WMA age standards and were regular
participants at our Thursday night meets.
BRONZE
JAN BANENS: Competing in the W70-74 age group
Jan performed consistently all season across all throwing
events. Her hammer and weight throws would have placed
her 2nd and 3rd respectively at the WMA Championships
in Brazil. Jan got 2 gold and 3 silver medals at the AMA
Championships in Bankstown. In pursuit of her love of
competing, Jan also performed with distinction at the Pan
Pacs and the AMA Winter Throw Championships this
season.
ROBIN WHYTE: Robin continues to be our number one
male walker who holds nearly all the Club records for the
walks in the M70-74 age group. Robin is also the current
Australian record holder in the M70 30km road walk. This
season Robin got a Club record over the 3000m Walk and
his gold medal performance at the AMA Championships in
Bankstown over the 5000m Walk would have also got him a
2nd placing at Brazil. Robin also competes regularly in all
the throwing events.
Fristad Award winners (Michael Roden missing)
SILVER
MARLENE REID: Competing in W55-59 age group
and then W60-64 age group during the season, Marlene
consistently performed within the upper percentages of the
WMA age standards in all the flat sprint events,
particularly in the 60 metres where she scored 94%. Her
best 400 metres (which was also a Club record) and long
jump for the season would have placed her third at Brazil
in those events. Marlene also represented the Club with
distinction at the AMA Championships, most notably in the
W220+ 4x100m relay team which smashed the old Club
record by 4 seconds in a time of 60.60s.
BRUCE GRAHAM: As a regular M50-54 competitor in
the middle and long distance events Bruce is generally
readily identifiable as the one out front. He is the winner of
the Pennington Series over the middle distance events for
this season. Not only did he win the 8km cross country at
the AMA Championships, but he also finished 3rd overall.
Bruce’s 10km time at the Championships would also have
secured him a 2nd placing at Brazil.
GOLD
MARGARET TAYLOR: Margaret is a world class
athlete. Running in the W65-69 age group at the AMA
Championships she again surpassed her own triple jump
Australian record which would also have gained her 1st
place in Brazil. At the AMA Championships, Margaret also
set a new Australian long jump record which would have
placed her 2nd at Brazil. Margaret equalled her own Club
high jump record which would have also placed her 2nd in
Brazil. Margaret also set new flat 60 metres and 80 metres
hurdles Club records this season, the latter placing her 3rd
in Brazil. She was runner up in this year’s Gift which she
has won 8 times and been runner up on 4 other occasions.
Margaret was also a member of the W220+ 4x100m relay
team which smashed the old Club record by 4 seconds at
the AMA Championships. Margaret is also a regular
participant in both the monthly throwing and running
handicaps.
MICHAEL RODEN: Fittingly, Michael stands with
Margaret as another world class athlete. Competing in the
M50-54 age group for the latter part of the season Michael
went about re-writing the Club records for all the flat
sprint events from 60 metres to 400 metres. His 100 metre
time would have placed him 2nd at Brazil, 200 metres 4th
while his 400 metres time would have placed him 1st. Not
only did Michael’s 400 metres time take 3 seconds of the
previous Club record but it was not far off the world record!
Michael also won the GIFT for the sixth time.

Vets Half Marathon 2015 - Organisers Needed
Organisers for the 2015 event NEEDED URGENTLY
The annual Vets Half Marathon is a long standing
traditional event run by the Club in August each year. Last
year’s Race Director has advised the Club that she will be
unavailable this year so we need to find a couple of
volunteers to take on this important role for 2015.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday 23 August
2015.
The Vets Half Marathon has enjoyed a long and
successful history since its beginning in June 1982. It is a
special event for persons over the age of 30 although there
always are a lot more 50 and 60+ than 30-39 year-olds
participating. It is especially attractive for older and/or
slower or inexperienced long distance runners or walkers.
Its unique three starts, a safe and scenic course and the
commencement of Spring make this half marathon the most
enjoyable of the year for male and female Veteran/Masters
athletes of all ages and abilities.
It would be a tragedy if it were to fold after 33 very
successful and popular events.
We are pleading for a couple of volunteers to put their
hands up to organise this important event in 2015. A Race
Director’s guidelines package has been compiled and there
is a wealth of knowledge to fall back on to assist you if you
require it.
If you’re interested in organising this event, please
contact either Brett Kingston ([email protected]) or
Phill Toomey ([email protected]) urgently thanks.

Stromlo Forest Park Run/Walk Handicap
29 March 2015
Reporter: Marian Hill
Stromlo Forest Park on the last daylight-saving Sunday
in March was picture-perfect, with young deciduous trees in
autumn yellows, oranges, and reds standing out against a
darker backdrop of native plantings, a track that was green
after showers early the previous week, and the promise of a
beautiful day in the sky. There was little sign of the chilly
fog that had settled over the city at dawn. The course
surface looked ideal, and the calm conditions were perfect
for the many runners and walkers who enjoy the open and
undulating track. Some, however, find its hilly sections more
than a little challenging. Fortunately, there were no nasty
mishaps on the close-mown Santa Ana couch grass. Still, the
presence of St John First Aid officers close to the action was
reassuring.
A new safety measure was noted off the track this year: a
fence with child-proof (at times adult-proof) locks on gates
separated cyclists from Vets. It was a convenient place to
drop bags and jackets or lean on later.
More in evidence at this venue than most others is the
extent of preparation – and number of volunteers – required
to enable the event to run smoothly. Under the direction of
the event and course managers with rosters devised by John
Alcock, a team of helpful marshals, start and finish line
officials, course officials, time keepers, place card monitors,
and recorders ensured everything was ready for the 9.00
start. As always, those in charge of the catering trailer and
the equipment trailer were models of cheery efficiency.
A volunteer with a difference, who is seen by all and allseeing, is John Kennedy. His camera records each handicap
for posterity, his splendid photos capturing moments of joy,
strain, busyness, action, and rest.
A regular, too, is Steve Appleby, our excellent announcer
and award presenter. Steve arrives early to help mark the
course. Then he runs in the Thomas event. Afterwards he
reads out notices and results (louder on Sunday, when the
microphone malfunctioned). Steve does this every month.
But this day was special, because, for the first time, he
announced his own name as a gold medallist – to delighted
applause.
There was a good turn-out, despite other events or
commitments keeping certain regulars away. Of the 158
Vets who completed the handicaps, 74 finished the 8km
Thomas run, 42 the 4km Frylink run, and the same number,
42, crossed the finish line in the 4km Waddell walk.
The perfect day brought splendid achievements: Fastest
performers by world age rating were Kent Williams (M70)
with WR 89.3% in the Thomas event, Gwen Gleeson (W85)
in Frylink with WR 96.2%, and John Suiter (M85) in
Waddell with WR 95.2%. Mike Clapper also reported that
new course records were set in Frylink in the M75 age group
by Roger Abbott and in the W85 age group by Gwen Gleeson,
while in Waddell several records were broken: John Suiter
in M85, Linda Bone in W55 (better than her W50 record),
and Dorothy Seedsman in W75 (better than her own W70
record).
Thomas Series – 8 kilometres
Men won the medals in the Thomas event. Steve Appleby
(M60) started from group 23 and was sixth across the line, to
take the gold. Steve has been running monthly handicaps for
twenty years; his first was at Mt Ainslie in May 1994. In 202
starts he has won three medals: gold, silver, and bronze, all
in the Thomas series. But he places more importance on the
pointscore, which he has won twice, maintaining that it’s
more about consistency and staying healthy and injury free
for the year.
Steve runs most days and also cross trains by riding his
mountain bike to work. Before Sunday, he had run in the
CBR 100km on the north side Centenary Trail and
completed a 26km training run on the Bullen Range, with
almost 1000 metres of altitude gain. At this event ‘it all
came together… The day was perfect, the soft grass
surface… and there were a few short sharp hills, which I
love’, he claimed. According to Steve, his Birdsville run was
the best 8-9 days of his running life. He says that he works
to support his running and associated activities, and with a
4WD and caravan he can do these and enjoy the journey.
Steve particularly likes the Vets events because there are
people he sees only once a month; he likens a handicap to a
family gathering.
Will Foster, who took the silver, was first involved with
the Club in the mid-1980s. He became a truly active member
in 1989; now he’s drawing close to his 200th run. Will has
won fourteen handicap medals: six gold, five silver, and
three bronze. Modestly describing his style as a “shuffle”,
Will adds that with chronic back problems he needs to
remember to walk slowly when there is a steep downhill
section on hard ground. Will maintains his fitness by
walking for 40-50 minutes, five days a week.
Bryan Thomas’s sixth bronze is his tenth medal. A
member since 1981, he has been a regular at handicaps ever
since – this was his 305th. He has also been a participant at
Track & Field and Throwing Handicaps from the beginning.
He reports that he had a good handicap and started
alongside the “Burglar” Will Foster on group 12. However,
Will soon opened up a big lead until the last downhill run to
the finish, where Bryan almost caught up with him. Bryan
likes the Stromlo course, but finds it much tougher than it
looks, because ‘it is always rolling’.
Frylink Series – 4 kilometres
Gold medal winner, Alan Wilson, believes that he is running
faster over the shorter distances than he has for the past 15
years or more. Alan’s first cross country race was at the age
of 11, and he went on to represent his county and the British
universities at cross country. He tells of how, in his early
running days in the UK, he twice competed against, and was
soundly beaten by, the famous Herb Elliott. In New South
Wales he ran marathons in the 1970s, achieving a personal
best of 2:31:56 in 1978 when he was placed fourth in the
NSW championships. Now his challenge is to maintain his
present form and stay under two hours for the half
marathon. (He entered the Australian Running Festival
Half-Marathon on 12 April.)
Page 8 — May 2015 Vetrunner
Despite serious health problems and major surgery,
Alan keeps running. His goal is to train every day, and he
competes regularly in parkrun events, as ‘racing is the
ultimate form of hard training!’ Alan’s wife Bev Forbes and
mother-in-law Judy Forbes also run in Frylink. He says he
enjoys ‘the opportunity to run and socialise with thoroughly
nice, interesting people of different ages, of various types
and with many diverse interests.’ His gold is his fifth medal.
Roger Abbott, the silver medallist, joined the ACTVAC
in 1979, though there have been times when he was
interstate or overseas. He believes his greatest sporting
achievement was his first marathon run in under three
hours in Canberra in 1980, ‘I was more than a little pleased,
kept the singlet for many years.’ He had been looking
forward to Sunday, because he knew he could run without
the risk of tripping or falling. Roger runs two or three days
a week, almost always on the grass of Aranda Oval, and he
also does “running in the water” at the local pool. His main
challenge this year is to keep reasonably fit and not fall.
Jo Cockwill moved to Canberra in January 2013 with
Mike, and they were ‘delighted to find such a wellestablished … group right on (their) doorstep.’ Jo’s favourite
running is in the bush, but she does like to run with others.
The Stromlo course is not a favourite, but she says she felt
good on the day and her legs were strong on the hills. Jo has
jogged regularly for a long time. This year she is training
with Greg Stretton on Sunday mornings, which she enjoys,
though she modestly claims she is the slowest runner there.
Jo adds, ‘The ACTVAC athletes inspire me. How good is it
to see people of all ages participating in so many events? …
I love the encouragement and the “have a go attitude”.’
home with a tangible reward for effort’. However, it was
down to good preparation rather than luck. John is a
regular walker with the ‘Tuesday Group’.
Silver medallist Linda Bone had just returned from a
holiday in Tasmania, where she had walked nearly every
day on Maria Island or Bruny Island. This, she believes,
helped her get fit for the handicap. She had added
incentives on Sunday: one was to stay ahead of Graeme
Small (both started off the same group), while the other was
that she was in a hurry, as her new grandson (three months
old) was coming for a visit. Linda thinks that the answer to
winning a medal is ‘always to go on holidays before Vets
handicap!’
Col Simpson, who was awarded the bronze medal, was
also somewhat surprised by his result. He felt he put in
quite a good effort on the day, but as seventh across the line
he had no expectations. Now he has four bronze medals.
The Stromlo Forest Park course suits him. ‘I do like having
a variety of courses through the year,’ he says, ‘although
this involves organising.’ Col is planning a long walk in
South Australia (the second half of the Heysen Trail) in
May/June with three other Vets. He thinks things are going
along quite well; his main goal is to maintain his overall
fitness and not to get an injury. Col likes the Vets for ‘the
relaxed approach to activities, yet with a dedicated
commitment to see that official things run smoothly.’
Finally, the Vets have welcomed several newcomers to
recent events. Among them are Ann and Michael Poole, who
came to the January handicap and became members before
the February one. Ann joined to accompany her husband.
She enjoyed Stromlo and likes ‘that the meets are very
relaxed and you are really only competing with yourself.’
She walked in Waddell and was glad to make the start,
unlike her first walk when she and your reporter were too
busy talking to notice that her group had taken off.
Both Ann and Michael liked the course, Ann because
there were ‘no potholes or other obstacles to watch out for.
Such things can be hazards when you are busily talking’,
while Michael, who had never been to Stromlo Forest Park
before, ran in the Thomas and was pleased with his time.
He says, ‘The organisation of the run/walk is very, very
good. The efficiency of processing the results, the marking
of the course and the volunteers who guide competitors
around the course is extremely well done.’ Michael’s goal is
to keep as fit as he can as he ages. He rarely drives, walks
Waddell Series – 4 kilometres
most days, and runs three times a week over a course
The final results in Waddell were revised after the
through the streets of Ainslie. He adds ‘I get a lot of joy out
presentations had been made. To his surprise, John Littler, of physical activities, running, cycling, dancing, and I want
who came in fifth, bagged the gold medal. A member of the to continue to vigorously pursue these activities as long as
Vets for more than 20 years, John is steadily approaching
possible and delay the inevitable decline into decrepitude.’
200 events. Before the start he believed that, with Alan
Ann hopes to improve her fitness, though she admits to
Burdon away travelling, he could be in with a chance for a
being a bit accident-prone, having had a portable netball
placing. He had the added incentive of having been eased
ring fall on top of her and also once managing to fall
out a group to 22, and although he foresaw challenges from through a dance floor… But she’s an optimist: ‘Hopefully
two others on the same number, they proved no competition walking with ACT Vets isn’t too dangerous.’ Hopefully,
on the day. John thought that he was ‘very lucky to come
indeed!

Vets In For The Long Haul
John Kennedy found that March/April 2015 held a
bonanza for Vets who fancied a little extra (distance). March
kicked off with the Six Foot Track (45km) from Katoomba,
followed closely in Canberra by the CBR100 (50 and 100km)
and concluded with the Anzac Ultra (450km as a 5 person
relay). John has provided some photos of Vets competing in
these events.
Also in March was the Coburg Six Hour Track
Championships; Cory Collins reports on two Vets who just
can’t stay away from that event.
Six Foot Track
Coburg Six Hour
Do you remember what you were doing at 6am on
Saturday 8 March - perhaps thinking of going out for an
easy run or walk around the lake or even a hard 10km. Not
so for two of our members - Robin Whyte and Val
Chesterton were on the start line for the annual Coburg Six
Hour Track Championships in Melbourne - a run/walk to
see how far you can go in six hours.
This event is run by the Victorian Race Walking Club
every year. It is usually held at Coburg in Melbourne’s
north but this year was on a track at Clifton Hill. It is open
to runners and walkers and is limited to 45. Runners go in
Lane 1, walkers in Lane 3. This year there were 32 runners
and 13 walkers.
Robin was first overall in the walk completing
50.741km (he insisted I include the third decimal point) and
Val, who was aiming for 40km, almost made it with
39.965km. These distances were both Australian records to
Robin and Val in their age groups.
What a fantastic effort!

Chuck Wagon for May and June Monthly Handicaps
From John Alcock
Bernie Millett and John Alcock will be away for the May
and June handicaps, so will not be able to provide the chuck
wagon refreshments for these events. Two members are
needed to volunteer to ensure that the usual refreshments
are provided at these two events.
Sherryl Greathead has offered to manage the pick-up
and loading of the wagon but needs someone to assist with
hooking up the trailer and to take responsibility for
purchasing consumables (mainly tea/coffee/Milo/biscuits/
milk).
Sherryl lives in Evatt and can be contacted on 62724170
(w) and 0419 013 025.

Susan Archer Wins Prestigious AMA Award
By Bryan Thomas
One of the highlights of every Australian Masters
Athletics (AMA) Championships is the presentation of their
annual track and field awards. The awards recognise the
Australian veterans/masters athletes with the most
outstanding performances during the previous calendar
year.
At this year’s presentation night held during the recent
AMA Championships in Sydney W65 Susan Archer was
the recipient of the Most
Outstanding Individual
Performance category for
her remarkable achievement
at the World Masters
Athletics Mountain Running
Championships in Stubai,
Austria on Saturday 6
September 2014. Susan was
an easy winner in her age
group when she crossed the
finish line of the tough
7.5km course, with an
elevation of 760m, in
1hr.00.49secs - 1min 22secs
ahead of the silver medallist.
Last month’s Vetrunner had brief descriptions of the
performances achieved during 2014 for each of our
nominated athletes for the awards. Below are all of our
nominations from 2011 to 2014 (shown in italics) and all
previous ACTVAC winners (shown in bold italics) for
each of the eleven categories.
Over the years ACTVAC members have figured
prominently in the nominations and now 13 members have
been recipients of these prestigious awards winning a total

”Fitness Through Fellowship”
(A History of the ACTVAC)
By Bryan Thomas
In the March issue, we commenced the above history
with an introduction, the contents page and the first
chapter: Pre 1979: FAVOURABLE PRE-CONDITIONS.
This month the story continues with:
Chapter 2: 1979: GREAT CONCEPT REJECTED
BY ATHLETICS ACT
New club for older athletes was not welcomed by
the athletics establishment
Ken Daniels’ advertisement in the Canberra Times
(February 1979) calling for a meeting of persons interested
in establishing a club for mature-aged athletes was the
first step in the creation of the ACT Veterans Athletic
Club. Seventeen persons; Mal Bone, Arthur Brown, Nigel
Crew, Ken Daniels (chair), Peter Frylink, Peter Hanlin,
Peter Kallio, John Keen, Laurie and Wendy Kupkee, Bob
Mee, Ken Miller, Rod Moore, Terry Munro, Brian Paxman,
Ray Robbins and Pat Robertson attended the meeting held
in a private home in Watson (22 February) while apologies
were received from Jack Pennington, Paul Rudkin, Eric
Sales, Warwick Selvey, Nigel Spurling and Dennis Wilson.
The meeting selected an interim committee to run the
affairs of the group until such time as an AGM could be
held.
After several other informal meetings our inaugural
AGM, chaired by 1956 Olympic shot putter Peter Hanlin,
was held at the East Canberra Rugby Union Club in
Kingston 2 May 1979 where the ACT Veterans Amateur
Athletics Club was born. Sir William McMahon accepted
the position of patron, Peter Frylink was elected president,
Nigel Crew vice president, Ken Daniels secretary, Terry
Munro treasurer and a general committee of Mike Adler,
Rod Moore and Brian Paxman.
Not Wanted by the Establishment
The meeting agreed to apply to become a district club
within the ACT Branch of the NSWAAA. The local
athletics establishment at the time was not keen on
admitting this fledging club with its motto of ‘Fitness
through Fellowship’ (coined by Peter Frylink) into their
organization. A decision made at an executive meeting on
22 July 1979 to change the club name to Canberra
Veterans Amateur Athletics Club was an attempt to
overcome one obstacle. However, after several meetings
between the rapidly growing new club and the ACTAAA,
and even modifying our constitution to better suit their
requirements, we were still not accepted.
Although rejected, Peter Frylink remained hopeful and
in December stated: “I am a firm believer and optimist to
know that common sense will prevail; for the Amateur
body will realise what a wealth of experience and good will
the Veterans offer.” But when Denis Wilson retired as
president of ACTAAA six years later (1985) he remarked in
his farewell speech: “… the area where there was shortsightedness was the veteran question. When the Veteran
Athletics Club applied for full membership, the Council by
a small majority, rejected an executive recommendation
that such membership be granted. It is history now but the
Veterans’ Club has gone from strength to strength without
our help…..”
It was decided our colours should be the royal blue and
yellow of the ACT and our competition uniform consist of a
yellow singlet and blue shorts. The yellow singlet had a
vertical blue stripe down one side of its front and a cloth
badge identifying the club while the blue shorts were to
have yellow trim down both sides. Our original club
emblem, designed by Ken Daniels, consisted of the ACT
coat of arms placed within a square and surrounded by the
words ACT Veterans Athletics Club. Apart from being on
the front of our competition singlet it also featured
prominently on our bright yellow (with blue trim) T/shirts
and on the front of a yellow cap.
So much established in Just a Few Months
Within the first few months many of the club’s favourite
institutions and practices were established; for example the
Sunday morning pack run in Stromlo Forest followed by a
BBQ was a highlight of the week for many members. In
July, 20 runners (Roger Abbott, John Bakker, Chris Best,
Ed Brittain, Alan Burdon, Kevin Comerford, Bob Cousins,
Ken Daniels, Peter Frylink, Joe Mayer, Terry Munro, Tom
Murray, Brian Paxman, Jack Pennington, Keith Perroux,
Ray Robbins, Jack Tonkin, Lucille Warth and Roy Yeeles)
completed the first running handicap, a 6.6km event
within Stromlo Forest. Mike Adler organized the event and
donated trophies for the place-getters. Appropriately,
newly elected president Peter Frylink won the first
handicap, finishing just ahead of Brian Paxman and Roger
Abbott.
Also during these first months Ken Daniels was
encouraging sprinters to join him at training in
preparation for the upcoming athletics season. Our first
track meet; consisting of a 100, 200, 400, 1500 and 5000m
(note that there were no field events), was held at Bruce
Stadium on Sunday morning 2 September 1979. Then in
October 42 men and 13 women participated in our
inaugural fun run held on a 7.5km loop within Stromlo
Forest. First across the line was M40 Peter Kallio in a time
of 25.43. Other age group winners were – Mick Dando M45,
Norm Franzi M50, Jack Pennington M55, Joe Mayer M60
(Joe was also the oldest competitor), Jonne Yabsley W35,
Janine Russell W40, Joan Raprecht W45, Lucille Warth
W50 and Lillian Child W55.
A three page Newsletter, produced by Ken Daniels and
Peter Frylink, was published in August. The term
Vetrunner was first used as the magazine’s banner in its
third edition (November 1979). We have always been proud
of our magazine even in its early days when it was a crude
four or six page Gestetner production.
Our Friendly Rivals
Jack Tonkin, an original member, was also a leader of
the Stromlo Forest Fleet Feet (FFF), an unstructured but
active group of mature-age long distance runners that met
regularly for early morning runs in the forest. Although
most of the FFF runners were also members of the
ACTVAC, they enjoyed competing against Vets’ teams in
relays. The rivalry between us often made for exciting
tussles within a race, especially in the popular annual
ACTCCC road relays such as the two 80km+ relays - the
Canberra to Gunning and the Canberra to Tidbinbilla - and
the Parliament House Relays.
May 2015 Vetrunner — Page 17
Many local veteran club and FFF members travelled to
Melbourne by coach to participate in the 1979 Big M
Marathon that began in Frankston and finished in front of
Melbourne’s Town Hall. The day of the Big M turned out to
be a disaster for many of the thousands of competitors, and
even some of our own such as Tony Luyendyk and Terry
Munro, who either did not finish or ran poorly because of
unusually high temperatures and strong head winds.
The Nocturnal Marathon
Perhaps the most unusual marathon was the ‘National
Capital Do It Yourself Nocturnal Marathon’ (NCDIYNM)
created and organized by Brian Lenton each year for the
decade from 1979 to1988. Brian boasted that this unique
event provided only two services, an accurately measured
course and a finishing time. As there were no entry fees
and no lap counts, drink stations, toilets, change rooms,
certificates, trophies, entry forms or result books, runners
did everything themselves. At 9pm on the Saturday
evening closest to the December full moon Brian struck a
match sending runners on 13 out-and-back laps of the path
between the National Library and the Yacht Club.
At the start of the first ‘Nocturnal’ Brian Lenton said:
“We are about to create history. I know all present share
my vision that participating in this event is one of the most
exciting ways of closing the decade of the seventies”.
However, Brian later confessed: “… these words fell on deaf
ears with only 10 of the 95 starters finishing…. And things
didn’t improve over the years”.
Bryan Thomas won the inaugural event in 2.49 and won
again in 1980 and 1984. Bryan’s eight completions and
three firsts were the most by any runner. Tony Luyendyk
won twice (in 1982 and 1983) and his 1983 performance of
2.33.42 is the race record that will more than likely last for
ever. Jo Cullen’s 3.09.49 was the best by a woman, while
Stuart Reid ran his first of many sub 3 hour marathons and
M55 Chappie Dyson made his marathon debut on this
unusual and lonely course. Trevor Jacobs handled the
oppressive conditions best when he won the tenth, and
final, Nocturnal Marathon Saturday evening 10 December
1988. Three other members – Peter Skinner, John
Jamieson and Stuart Reid also completed this unusual
marathon.
A Successful First Year
The club’s first year had been successful despite not
being wanted by the AAA. In December most of our 40
members and their partners celebrated appropriately at our
first dinner/dance.
In his end of year President’s Message in the December
1979 edition of Vetrunner, Peter Frylink said: “Remember
the Club came into being only last May and since then –
just eight months – we have doubled our membership, kept
up our Sunday morning runs, had our monthly handicap
events, enjoyed a couple of track workouts, and taken part
in numerous Fun Runs. Despite the signs of a growing club
of athletes with a philosophy of “Fitness through
Fellowship”, rather than record breakers, the ACT Branch
of the NSWAAA decided that a veterans club will not be
allowed to join the ACT Branch as a ‘full’ club. My personal
feeling is that we are better off as we are; a club for older
people to do their own thing……”

Chapter 3: 1980 – 1984: WE MAKE IT ONTO THE
NATIONAL STAGE
Despite misgivings the small and inexperienced
club successfully conduct their first major event
Note: As this is a relatively lengthy chapter it will be
published in three sections.
The Way We Were
By Bryan Thomas
30 YEARS AGO (May 1985)
AGM elects - Bryan Thomas president, Duane Lowry
vice president, Rosemary Parker secretary and Stuart Reid
treasurer. Quentin Anthony, Peter Frylink, Frank Green,
Maggie Johnson, Bronwyn Muller (Gardner) and Maureen
O’Shea were elected to committee. Our annual subs were
$10 of which most was spent on producing Vetrunner. A
sub-committee was established to investigate the possible
need for computer technology and put out a call for a
“computer expert”.
M45 Craig Malot reported on his run over the Overland
Track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair in Tasmania
and becoming the first to run under nine hours.
A question was posed in Vetrunner as we now averaged
more than 80 to our monthly running handicaps why don’t
throwers organize a “monthly novelty throwing
competition” that might encourage more to try the throwing
events?
Eighty-three ran in our inaugural cross-country
championships on a 10km course in Stromlo Forest. Age
winners were– W30 Linda Waide, W35 Jo Cullen 42.26
fastest woman, W40 Marion Ward, W45 Suzanne Counsel,
W55 Lucille Warth, M35 Geoff Moore 34.33 fastest, M40
Ron Vines, M45 Terry Munro, M50 Stuart Reid, M55 Peter
Tesseyman, M60 Jack Pennington and M70 Joe Mayer.
The 1984-85 track and field awards were presented at a
dinner/dance. The Heart Foundation Trophy was won by
Peter Schiworsky; Fristad Awards by Charlie Rann and
Annette Perkins (gold), Garry Hand and Lyndall Hatch
(silver), Bob Chapman and Jan Williams (bronze) and the
Johnson Trophy for club-persons of the season was
presented to Alan and Maggie Johnson.
The running handicap was a 7km loop of Watson. John
Kemp won from 59 runners, Graham Bridge was second
and Alan Burdon third.
20 YEARS AGO (May 1995)
AGM elects – Jack Pennington patron. Bryan Thomas
president, Ken Daniels vice president, Geoff Moore
secretary and Will Foster treasurer. Bob Banens, John
Busteed, Sherryl Greathead (new), Jim O’Donnell, Trish
Thomas and Alan Williams were elected to committee.
Bryan was honoured with Life Membership.
The inaugural Boag Awards for sprinting and hurdling
were presented to Margaret Taylor and Ken Daniels by the
donor M75 Gordon Boag at a dinner at Brassey House.
Our monthly running handicap was at Copland College.
Seventy-nine ran the 10km course won by Doug Fry from
Duane Lowry and Neil McLeod while 48 ran the 5km short
course that was won by Rosemary Parker from Gael Brook
and Theresa Thorogood.
The May throwing handicap (consisting of hammer and
javelin), was won by Ewen Drummond from Al Mallory and
Ray Green. Jen Bourke and Trish Thomas became the first
recipients of the “50 monthly handicaps” T shirts.
Page 18 — May 2015 Vetrunner
10 YEARS AGO (May 2005)
Because of the unsatisfactory conclusion of the Special
GM a few weeks earlier, our AGM attracted a record
attendance of 160. Geoff Sims was elected president after a
ballot between him and incumbent Ray Green, Chris Lang
vice president, Ken White secretary and Will Foster
treasurer. Will was by far the most experienced committee
person as this was his eighth term of which five were as
treasurer. In his first President’s Report Geoff listed three
priorities – “re-establishing our website and IT services,
promoting our club to potential new members and
organising the AMA Championships at Easter 2006”. By
September John Donovan and Stuart Reid had set up a new
club website.
A highlight of our 150th monthly throwing handicap was
that both Trish Thomas and Jen Bourke had completed all
events since its origin in June 1990. Both were therefore the
first to don the special vests hand-made and embroidered by
Trish. Trish was now the first to have completed both 150
throwing and running handicaps. This month’s throwing
handicap in hammer and javelin was won by W65 Pamela
Weiss from Raylea Rudov and Fran Schiller.
A new course on Farrer Ridge was the venue for this
month’s run/walk handicap where on his 215th attempt
Bryan Thomas enjoyed his first win. The silver medal in the
long course was won by Roger Pilkington from Greg DuttonRegester. The short course was won by Beryl Lowry ahead of
Pamela Weiss and Karen Taylor. Ray Bramwell won the
walk handicap from John Littler and Otmar Dorfer. Peter
Freeman became the sixth member to earn his ‘200
handicaps’ T shirt while Beryl Lowry and Pamela Weiss
were presented with their ‘100’.
Mario Larocca reported in Vetrunner on his successful
completion of the challenging ultra run from Cradle
Mountain to Lake St Clair in the Central Highlands of
Tasmania.
Rad Leovic organized a contingent of 35 to participate in
the Nail Can Hill Race in Albury. Of the more than 1300
finishers, 15 ACTVAC members became “Age Busters”.
For The Record
Thursday night T&F
There was a very quiet finish on the records front to the
last three meetings of the T&F season. There were no Club
records set on the 12 March meeting. Nor were there any
records set on the 26 March meeting, although it is worth
mentioning that Sue Bourke’s 9.15s came within a
hundredth of a second of equalling the W55 60m record of
8.9 hand-timed (9.14 adjusted) set back in 1999 by Leslie
Hamilton. And there was only one record set at the 19
March meeting. That record was in the M50 60m with
Michael Roden now claiming all the M50 sprint records.
Michael’s time of 7.62s beat the previous hand-timed 7.4s
(7.64s adjusted) set by another pocket rocket, Robert
Barbaro, back in 2003 and equalled by Leo Kennedy in 2008
with an electronic time of 7.64.
AMA Championships (Bankstown)
While there was a quiet end to the local T&F season,
things soon hotted up again for the AMA Nationals held in
Bankstown over the Easter break where the following Club
records were set:
Margaret Taylor (66), Sue Bourke (55), Sharon
Gibbins (56) and Marlene Reid (60) with a combined age
of 237 broke the Women's 220+ 4x100m relay by nearly 4
seconds with a time of 60.60s. Unfortunately this team could
not also claim the W55 4x100m relay record (which they
beat by 3 seconds) because Margaret Taylor is two age
groups up and the relay rules only allow for up to two
runners to be in the next age group up.
M70 Ray Green scored 3,643 points in the Throws
Pentathlon: Hammer 36.06m (752), Shot Put 10.91m (771),
Discus 36.66m (805), Javelin 25.25m (485), Weight 14.61m
(830). Ray now has the Club records in this event for M55 to
M70.
M65 Bob Banens finally managed to break the Javelin
Club record previously held by Don Fraser since 2005. Bob
has been ever so close on a number of occasions and finally
achieved it with a throw of 39.53m while competing in the
Javelin leg of the Throws Pentathlon.
W55 Sue Bourke maintained her ‘Sprint Queen’ status
with two great sprints at the Championships. Sue began by
finally breaking the 60m record which she had got so close to
at our T&F meet on 26 March (see earlier). She did this by
running 9.08s which beats the hand-timed 8.9s which gets
adjusted to 9.14s under the rules. Then Sue went on to
improve on her previous 400m Club record with a new
record time of 68.17s.
W65 Margaret Taylor was at it again with three Club
records, two of which were also Australian records. Margaret
ran a new Club record time of 10.04s in the 60m dash. Next
Margaret did a great leap of 3.96m in the Long Jump
beating the previous Australian Record mark of 3.85m.
Finally, Margaret hopped, stepped and jumped 8.72m to
improve on her old Triple Jump Australian record.
W60 Marlene Reid topped off a great meet with a welldeserved Club record in the 400m with a time of 73.41s
M40 Brett Kingston was able to improve on his
previous 10km Road Walk record and establish a new record
time of 1:14.56s.
Latest Club Records List
I have included in this issue (pages 24-29) the latest list
of ACTVAC records. If you pick up any errors here, please
don’t hesitate to contact me.
It is now ever more important to stress that you email
me if you have equalled or beaten any of our Club or
Australian records during the off-season as I can’t check for
many of these results on our website. Moreover, the
recorded and published results are not always correct. For
example, the 10km Road Walk results at the Bankstown
AMA Championships were recorded as the 10,000 metres
Race Walk, leading me to a number of errors.
Time for a laugh (or more likely a groan)
I thought I might as well finish off our T&F season with
a little attempted humour:
One of our older athletes was complaining to me about
his poor performances on the track. I said, ‘Why don’t you
make an appointment to see a watchmaker.’
‘How is that going to help?’, he questioned.
‘Because you’re running slow’, I quipped.

Monthly Throws Pentathlon - March 2015
Reporter: Jayne Hardy
Well, this month’s Throws Pentathlon was the club’s
Championship event for the year and is usually held now as
a great warm-up for the Easter Nationals – this year held in
Sydney
We had 7 women and 8 men competing in what could
only be called glorious weather, although a little windy at
times. Some rain would be really appreciated as the ground
is so hard, we could barely get the numbers into the ground
with a hammer, let alone the shot put sector which is
sand!!!
Total points are shown here but for a full breakdown of
scores, please go to www.actvac.com.

There was a good competition going in the Men’s 70 agegroup between John, Ray and Robin with Ray winning in
the end. It was also nice to see more than one member in
some of the other age-groups.
Also good to see Kerry and Jean Thew drive down from
Wingello in NSW; Ray Green from Lake Macquarie and one
of our champion sprinters/jumpers Margaret Taylor join us
for a solid throwing competition.
Thank you to all those who assisted in the setting up and
putting away of the equipment and we look forward to more
members coming along to try it. Check the website for the
dates.

Throwing Handicap - 28 March 2015
Reporter: John Reynolds
Very good performances in both the hammer and javelin
saw Kevin Blewitt score an easy win in the March monthly
throwing handicap. He won the javelin on handicaps and
placed second in the hammer to finish 2½ metres clear of
Jan Banens. Ray Green just missed second place with his
total distance only five centimetres behind Banens. Twentytwo throwers enjoyed excellent conditions on a calm sunny
autumn afternoon. Results were close overall with placings
two through to nine being separated by a little over two
metres. For Kevin Blewitt it was his seventh win from the
126 times he has contested the event.
Jayne Hardy led the women in the hammer with an
excellent throw of 43.33. In the men’s hammer Ray Green
had the best toss of 37.10. Bob Banens chasing the elusive
M65 club record in the javelin once again fell just short with
his best effort of 35.43. Once again Jayne Hardy was easily
the best of the women in the javelin. Her best throw was
24.51.
Eight throwers contested the standard weights. Best
distances recorded in that event were 14.26 by John
Reynolds & 12.47 by Jayne Hardy. Ray Green was the
leading contestant in the 100 lb weight throw. He threw
2.53.
Due to the excellent throwing and lack of mishaps it
seemed unlikely that the Oscar would be awarded for
March. At one stage the most likely recipient appeared to be
a King George Spaniel which had wandered away from its
owner. It had decided that when you are lost the best place
to be was among a group of sympathetic hammer throwers.
They quickly adopted it and looked after it until a relieved
owner turned up some time later. The Oscar was finally
awarded to John Parker for his effort in the weight throw.
Using the triangle handle weight, John decided that he
would add a bit of skin from his head to the handle to
enhance the throw. Apart from the bleeding it worked well
as he recorded a good distance of 11.70.
The winner of the bottle of wine kindly donated by
Southside Physiotherapy was Duncan Macnicol. Duncan
could almost start a wine collection as he was last month’s
winner as well.
The next throwing handicap will be held on May 30th
commencing at 1pm. The events to be held are hammer
throw, javelin, standard weight throw and 100lb weight.
Volunteers for May are Tania Colyer. John Hunt and Gina
& William Etienne. Remember, if for some reason you are
unable to volunteer on that date, please ensure that you
swap your duties with someone.
