He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town." I said, "Your flagpole has leaned a little bit, And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it.” Susan Bell INSIDE: Strawberry Poke Cake Recipe 2 Solution to June’s Crossword Puzzle 2 Neighbor Spotlight 3 New Businesses Opening in Newnan 3 “Water” Tips 3 What’s Happening at CW? 4 July 4th Picnic 4 Oak Hill Cemetery 4 CW Events 5 Local Events 5 COA Information 5 Crossword Puzzle 6 Carnegie — July 2014 7 He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down. OAK HILL CEMETERY Oak Hill Cemetery is a 60 acre property located at the mouth of Historic downtown Newnan. The cemetery dates back to 1828 when Newnan First United Methodist Church opened on the property the same year the city of Newnan was founded soon to be joined by the First Baptist Church of Newnan. The First Presbyterian Church which had been established in 1828 in Bullsboro (closer to what is now Interstate 85) moved to the location across the street from the main cemetery in 1834. Oak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for two of Georgia's Governors, Governor William Yates Atkinson (1854-1899) and Governor Ellis Gibbs Arnall (1907-1992). In addition, the cemetery is home to two soldiers form the Revolutionary War. In the large Confederate Section there are 2710 soldiers representing all Confederate states, who were either killed in the Battle of Brown's Mill near Newnan or died in one of the several hospitals established in Newnan during the War Between the States. Of these 270 soldiers, 269 are identified. Of particular interest is the grave of William Thomas Overby, a member of Mosby's Rangers, who was captured and hanged in Front Royal, Virginia because he would not divulge the location of his unit. After burial in Virginia his remains were disinterred and re-interred in Oak Hill in 1997. A special plaque honors his service. There are numerous veterans of World War I and II, Vietnam and Korea buried in the cemetery. Lots of history in this cemetery and a great place to spend an afternoon!
