RAGGED OLD FLAG
Katrina Cline
By: Johnny Cash
Barbara Harness
Below are a few stanzas from the Ragged Old Flag, as recorded by Mr. Cash.
Phyllis Pierce
It seems appropriate to include it as we celebrate our freedom this month.
Jeff & Sherry Lloyd
I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run
down."
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging
on it.”

He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down.
"Is this the first time you've been to our little
town?"
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to
brag,
But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old
Flag."

of the brave.”

box white or yellow cake mix (with pudding in the mix for an extra
moist cake)
3 eggs
1/3 cup oil
(water per cake mix instructions)
3 ounce box strawberry jello
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup ice water
8 ounces whipped topping
1 pound fresh strawberries, sliced
Bake cake according to package directions. Cool completely.
Stir strawberry jello in 1 cup boiling water until dissolved. Add 1/2
cup icy cold water.
Using a plastic spoon handle, toothpick or skewer, poke holes into top
of cake about 1/2 an inch apart. Slowly pour or spoon warm liquid
jello over cake and holes, covering cake evenly. It always looks like
too much liquid, but it will be perfect. Cover and chill cake in refrigerator for several hours before serving.
To serve, top cake with whipped topping and fresh berries. Store in
refrigerator. You can even do it with cupcakes!

OAK HILL CEMETERY
Oak Hill Cemetery is a 60 acre property located at the mouth of Historic downtown Newnan. The cemetery dates back to 1828
when Newnan First United Methodist Church opened on the property the same year the city of Newnan was founded soon to be
joined by the First Baptist Church of Newnan. The First Presbyterian Church which had been established in 1828 in Bullsboro
(closer to what is now Interstate 85) moved to the location across the street from the main cemetery in 1834.
Oak Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for two of Georgia's Governors, Governor William Yates Atkinson (1854-1899) and Governor Ellis Gibbs Arnall (1907-1992). In addition, the cemetery is home to two soldiers form the Revolutionary War. In the large
Confederate Section there are 2710 soldiers representing all Confederate states, who were either killed in the Battle of
Brown's Mill near Newnan or died in one of the several hospitals established in Newnan during the War Between the States. Of
these 270 soldiers, 269 are identified.
Of particular interest is the grave of William Thomas Overby, a member of Mosby's Rangers, who was captured and hanged in
Front Royal, Virginia because he would not divulge the location of his unit. After burial in Virginia his remains were disinterred
and re-interred in Oak Hill in 1997. A special plaque honors his service. There are numerous veterans of World War I and II, Vietnam and Korea buried in the cemetery. Lots of history in this cemetery and a great place to spend an afternoon!
