The African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific Habari kwa ufupi - AFSAAP Newsletter No. 58 - March 2015 To contribute to the newsletter, please contact [email protected] Facebook Twitter Website MARCH 2015 AFSAAP Newsletter Remembering Two Great African Studies Scholars Professor Anthony Low - 1927-2015 AFSAAP would like to acknowledge and celebrate the life and contributions of Professor Anthony Low. He was AFSAAP’s first president from 1978-1981, and he made an invaluable contribution to African Studies, and the academy. In the Australasian Review of African Studies, Vol 34 No 2 December 2013, David Lucas wrote about Anthony Low’s ‘retirement’ from research – see http://afsaap.org.au/assets/ARAS_Vol_XXXIV_2_Lucas1.pdf. At the 2012 AFSAAP Conference held in Canberra, (see http://afsaap.org.au/conference/conference-2012/) we also celebrated his contribution to AFSAAP. You can see in this photo, http://afsaap.org.au/assets/2012conference1. jpg from the front Professor Low, his wife, his son in law Matthew Neuhaus, and his grand-daughter, with Tanya Lyons, AFSAAP’s current president, acknowledging his life’s achievements. AFSAAP sends sincere condolences to Anthony’s family at this time, and would like to thank them for supporting his achievements in African Studies. Farewell Terence Ranger A leading Africanist historian - passed away on January 3rd 2015 Many AFSAAP members will know Ranger’s formidable list of publications on African history, in particular Zimbabwean history. You can see his major publications at this link - http://explore.tandfonline.com/page/pgas/ terence-ranger-2015 More importantly, Ranger inspired many young Africanist scholars around the world, and he is considered to be one of the leading figures in African Studies. Read his obituary here - http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/ jan/18/terrance-ranger-obituary On a personal note, I met Terence Ranger in Harare in 1996, in the bar at the Miekels Hotel, where we discussed a feminist history of Zimbabwe over a beer, and he suggested the title for my PhD thesis. He connected my research on women in the liberation struggle to David Lan’s 1985 book “Guns and Rain: Guerillas and Spirit Mediums in Zimbabwe”, and the title “Guns and Guerrilla Girls: Women in the Zimbabwean Liberation Struggle” was invented. Ranger’s enthusiasm inspired the completion of my research. While it may seem trivial, it is these moments of inspiration and support - which Professors like Terence Ranger excelled at - that have enabled the development of knowledge about Africa, for Africa across the world. Farewell Professor Ranger.
