The California State University, Fresno Armenian Studies Program the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society and the Leon S. Peters Foundation present “The Martyred Armenian Writers: 1915-1922” by Dr. Herand M. Markarian State University of New York This anthology focuses on thirteen of the most prominent Armenian writers who were martyred during the Armenian Genocide. The translations in the book are original and appear for the first time. For each a writer a biography is presented along with their literary accomplishments, the works they produced, and then the original translations. Dr. Markarian will present the works of the writers and six excerpts will be recited. A scientist, professor, playwright, poet, literary and theater critic, director, actor, translator and educator, was born in Basrah, Iraq. He first appeared on the stage in 1956 in Basrah, debuted as a director in 1958 in Baghdad, and had his first poem published in 1958 in Koyamard Weekly, Baghdad, Iraq. Dr. Markarian has authored 26 plays, a book of poems and a travelogue; published 13 books, directed 53 plays and acted in more than 50 plays. His plays have been presented in the USA, Canada, Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, Greece and England and he had two successful Off-Broadway theatrical performance runs in NYC in 1995 and 2012.
