out from your local library as well?
For those of you with tablet/e-reader access, if it seems like every
time you put a popular e-book on hold you have to wait forever
you're not alone. You'll be happy to hear that due to demand, we are
purchasing best seller e-books out of the consortium so you
have access to them more quickly.
Did you know the Eaton Library has a free Video Phone for the Deaf?
Your public library is an integral part of your community. We are
always finding ways to work hand-in-hand to make hard times better.
Did you know that the Eaton Library is a site for the Jacob's Ladder
Program? Some children do not have access to a nutritional meal
when school is out for the summer. The Jacob's Ladder Program
provides a free meal for these area children. Currently the Eaton

Dinner Bell Donated
The Genealogy Staff wishes to
thank Mrs. Shirley Rhoades of
Lewisburg, Ohio for the wonderful cast-iron dinner bell she
recently donated to the Preble
County Room. Shirley had always wanted a dinner bell and
about 20 years ago, while she
was on a business trip, her husband, Herbert, surprised her
with the bell. He had purchased
it in an antique shop located in
Centerville, Indiana. By the time
she returned home, the bell
was mounted and ready for her to ring.
The markings on the bell indicate that it was made in 1886 by Montgomery Ward and Co., Chicago, Illinois, making it over 125 years old.
A special thank you goes out to Skip Rhoades for letting us know
about the bell in the first place, and also to Tom Davis, PCDL Maintenance, and Marvin Deaton for making a new home for this special
bell.
Next time you are in the south part of Eaton, stop by the Library
Administration Office (450 S. Barron St) to see our new bell. You
might even give it a ring or two in thanks to Shirley Rhoades for her
very generous gift.
Marlene Ressler, PC Room Supervisor
Marilyn Combs, Genealogy Asst.
Marilyn Melling, Genealogy Asst.
Monetary Donation
Recently a couple from Los Coso, CA visited the PC Room to do some
family genealogy. She was able to find information regarding her family that she had searched 15 years to find! Thrilled, she donated $100
to our room!

The library automatically purchases books by many popular authors. If
you are interested in any of the titles listed here, please request them

Holds can be placed on any title offered from the library’s catalog.
Released in June, Gillian Flynn’s latest psychological thriller focuses on a marriage that isn’t as
perfect as it first appears. In Gone Girl, Amy Dunne disappears on the
day of her fifth wedding anniversary. Is she merely missing or dead?
Does her husband, Nick, know more than he is telling? Twists and
turns worthy of Hitchcock will keep readers gasping to the end.  In
July, Herman Melville’s great, great, great granddaughter, Liza Klaussmann (NY Times journalist), debuts her first novel with the publication
of Tigers in Red Weather. The book is set in an old family estate
named Tiger House and centers on a family grappling with secrets,
betrayal and murder.  In August, author Enid Shomer unveils her
novel, The Twelve Rooms of the Nile. In 1850, Florence Nightingale
and Gustave Flaubert happened to travel down the Nile at the same
time. Shomer takes this historical tidbit and runs with it, weaving an
enthralling tale of imagined adventure and friendship that brings together two glorious characters just on the brink of greatness.  In
September, award-winning author (and investigative reporter for Boston’s NBC affiliate) Hank Phillippi Ryan introduces The Other Woman,
the first book in her new series. This mystery thriller bands together
disgraced television reporter Jane Ryland and Detective Jack Brogan
as they rush to catch a serial killer who is linked to a Senatorial election campaign. The publisher’s tagline for the book reads: “Seduction,
betrayal, and murder—it’ll take a lot more than votes to win this election.” Hank is also the author of the Charlotte McNally mystery series.
 Bonfire of the Vanities author Tom Wolfe will introduce his latest
novel in October. Back to Blood is set in Miami’s Biscayne Bay and
introduces outlandish Wolf-style characters readers won’t soon forget.  Shaking up the status quo in 1960’s Florida is the theme of
Amy Hill Hearth’s latest novel due out in October. Miss Dreamsville
and the Collier County Women’s Literary Society introduces readers
to Jackie Hart, a Boston transplant to Naples, Florida who starts up a
literary club that allows ANYONE to join including a woman who did
prison time for allegedly killing her husband, a man of questionable
sexual preference, a young divorcee, as well as a Black woman. Unbeknownst to everyone in this racially segregated town, Jackie is the
anonymous Miss Dreamsville, host of a much-loved radio show. This
novel promises to make you laugh and cry.

The Blackbird Sisters Are Back!
No Way to Kill a Lady / Nancy Martin: Nora

scandal. Her sister Emma is expecting a mysterious love child. Her best friend, Lexie Paine,
is serving time in the slammer. And now her mobbed-up boyfriend,
Mick Abruzzo—who might actually be her husband—is conducting
clandestine capers from Blackbird Farm while under house arrest.
What’s a good girl to do?
Find a killer, that’s what! Soon, Nora Blackbird is hot on the trail of
a murderer, but this time, the culprit is very likely someone in her
own family! Previous books in the series: How to Murder a

Heather Wells Mystery
Size 12 and Ready to Rock / Meg Cabot: Just
because the students at New York College have

squealing thirteen- and fourteen-year-old girls
attending the first ever Tania Trace Teen Rock
Camp, hosted by pop sensation Tania Trace herself—who just happens to be newly married to
Heather's ex-boyfriend, heartthrob Jordan Cartwright. But the real headache begins when the producer of a reality TV show starring Tania winds up dead . . . and it's clear that the

Mystery Romance
It doesn’t get any better than reading mystery romances written by an author who
was a former lawyer and is presently a popular, well-known comedian. As a lawyer,
Karen Bergreen clerked for a federal judge,
so her novels sing with lawyerly authenticity. As a stand-up comedian, she is one of
New York City’s finest, performing at such
popular hot spots as Gotham and The Comic Strip. Her hilarious brand of humor zings throughout her novels with perfect
comedic pitch! www.karenbergreen.net
The Novels
Perfect is Overrated: What is the best
cure for post-partum depression? After
years of barely moving, Kate springs back
to life when the mothers-you-love- tohate in her daughter’s preschool begin to
turn up dead. Murder as a cure for sadness? Sounds evil, but it’s not. In Perfect
Is Overrated...Bergreen presents a
lovable heroine who is so at sea she’s still
not sure whether what she suffers has to
do with the birth of her little girl or with
the fact that her handsome hunk of a detective husband
doesn’t live with her anymore. She might fall back in love, she
might find a killer, but she sure won’t be spending all day in
bed anymore. Pub date: 7/17/12
Following Polly: Would you call Alice
Teakle a stalker? Or just someone with
an, um, healthy obsession with golden
girl Polly Linley Dawson? No one much
notices Alice: not her boss, not the
neighbors, not even her mother. Besides, everyone follows Polly: her business selling high-end lingerie you can
only imagine her wearing, her all-overthe-social-pages marriage to movie director Humphrey Dawson, her chic
looks, her wardrobe. Alice just follows her a little
more….closely.
Yet one Manhattan autumn afternoon, when Alice loses her
job and starts to follow Polly, she stumbles on the object of
her attention sprawled dead on the floor of a boutique and is
forced to become truly invisible. Because she’s accused of
murder. But can another obsession help save Alice? Charlie is
Alice’s longtime unattainable crush. He might be able to help
her out of the mess she’s in…in return for a favor or two, that
is. But how will Alice find out if Charlie is really the man she
thinks he is? Psst! I just finished this book - it was good! CR

Avery and Nicole have hit some speed bumps in their lives,
but when they arrive in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood,
they are all hoping for a do-over. Literally. They’ve been
hired to bring a once-grand historic house back to its former
glory on a new television show called Do-Over. If they can
just get this show off the ground, Nikki would get back on
her feet financially, Avery could restart her ruined career,
and Maddie would have a shot at keeping her family together.
At least, that’s the plan – until the women realize that having their work
broadcast is one thing, having their personal lives play out on TV is another
thing entirely. On order.

*Gaslamp Fantasy, a subgenre of Fantasy and
Historical Fiction, is a quirky gothic-style cousin to
the more science-based Steampunk Fiction. Set
during the Victorian or Edwardian era, the world
of Gaslamp Fantasy contains advanced technology, but, like Steampunk, creates that technology using materials that existed at the time, such as hand-wrought metals,
leather, wood, cogs, etc. Gaslamp sets itself apart from Steampunk by relying more on supernatural elements, themes, and
subjects than on science and technology. Gaslamp Fantasy is
also known as Gaslight Fantasy or Gaslight Romance.
The Fifty Shades Trilogy by E.L. James not your cup of
tea? Try “The Last Letter from Your Lover” by Jojo Moyes
for some nostalgic-style romance!
The Last Letter from Your Lover / Jojo Moyes:
A Brief Encounter for our time, [this book] is a
sophisticated, spellbinding double love story
that spans decades and thrillingly evokes a
bygone era.
In 1960, Jennifer Stirling wakes in the hospital
and remembers nothing—not the car accident
that put her there, not her wealthy husband,
not even her own name. Searching for clues, she finds an impassioned letter, signed simply "B," from a man for whom she
seemed willing to risk everything. In 2003, journalist Ellie Haworth stumbles upon the letter and becomes obsessed with
learning the unknown lovers’ fate—hoping it will inspire her
own happy ending. Remarkably moving, this is a novel for romantics of every age.

Publishers promise to offer a thrill-a-minute this summer with the release
of all sorts of novels to suit every taste - from thriller to mystery to action
adventure - your appetite for goose bump-raising, mindboggling, heartpumping storytelling will be totally satisfied!
June saw the release of Matthew Quirk’s debut thriller, The 500. Mike Ford, a
recent Harvard grad, grew up in a world of small-stakes con men. Now he’s
working in his dream job for a powerful Washington consulting firm. Only, he’s
quick to discover that consulting is the biggest con of all. Who can resist this
teaser from the publisher: “To get out, he’ll have to do all the things he thought
he’d never do: lie, cheat, steal - and this time, maybe even kill. Combining the
best elements of political intrigue and heart-stopping action, THE 500… calls to
mind classic thrillers like The Firm and Presumed Innocent.”
Did you know that private investigation is illegal in China? That’s one of the interesting facts you’ll glean while devouring the first book in Ridley Pearson’s brilliant new action thriller series. The Risk Agent introduces readers to Rutherford
Risk, a firm that specializes in hostage extraction and recovery. The firm’s first
case involves the kidnapping of a Chinese National working for an Americanowned construction company. Where to start? Follow the money, of course.
Forensic Accountant, Grace Chu and civilian John Knox (“a man with unparalleled
training in both combat and culture”) do just that - and more - but can they
rescue the hostage before it’s too late? On order
The sultry and atmospheric New Orleans headlines Daniel Blake’s second book
(after Thou Shalt Kill) in his Franco Patrese mystery thriller series. City of the
Dead finds Patrese making a new life for himself in a new job (FBI, New Orleans
Bureau). It’s not long before he finds himself bayou-deep in murder and the dark
and twisted underworld of Voodoo. The book will be released in July.
In July, Dewey Andreas, author Ben Coes’ Army Ranger and Delta hero, comes up
against his most formable foe yet in The Last Refuge, the third book in the series.
Dewey finds himself racing against time to eliminate Iran’s first nuclear weapon
to repay a debt. All he has to do is rescue his friend from one of the world’s most
secure prison’s, and find and destroy an Iranian nuke - all in a day’s work, right?
Stephen Romano gives readers a white-knuckle ride of suspense
when he releases his techno-thriller Resurrection Express in September. Who can resist a novel with a description from the publisher that reads: “Meet Elroy Coffin. He’s a twenty-first century high
tech thief with deadly hands...There is no code he can’t break, nothing he can’t hack. No safe he can’t crack. But even the best can fall.
Sold up the river after a job..., Coffin has spent the past two years
incarcerated in a maximum security hellhole, driven to near-madness by the
death of his beloved wife. When a mysterious “concerned citizen” arrives...with
evidence that Coffin’s wife is still alive, and offers him the chance to find her in
return for cracking the most deadly security system ever designed, Coffin knows
something big is going down. Back on the street and relentlessly hunted by the
same man who left him to rot in jail, Coffin is drawn into a breakneck maelstrom
of action, betrayal and intrigue that will test the limits of his skills, and puts him
in the center of a death-defying escape through the criminal underworld.”
Linwood Barclay releases his latest thriller in September. Trust Your Eyes features map-obsessed schizophrenic Thomas Kilbride and his brother/caretaker
Ray. They both become targets when Thomas’ obsession with a map of the world
computer program called whirl360.com unveils a murder in New York City.
The Yellow Birds: A Novel / Kevin
Powers: "The war tried to kill us in
the spring," begins this breathtaking
account of friendship and loss. In Al
Tafar, Iraq, twenty-one-year old Private Bartle and eighteen-year-old
Private Murphy cling to life as their
platoon launches a bloody battle for
the city. In the endless days that follow, the two young soldiers do everything to protect each other from the forces that press
in on every side: the insurgents, physical fatigue, and
the mental stress that comes from constant danger.
Bound together since basic training when their toughas-nails Sergeant ordered Bartle to watch over Murphy, the two have been dropped into a war neither is
prepared for. As reality begins to blur into a hazy
nightmare, Murphy becomes increasingly unmoored
from the world around him and Bartle takes impossible actions. Pub Date: 9/11/12
Debut author Kevin Powers served in Tafar, Iraq in
2004 and 2005. His writing style has been compared
to that of Ernest Hemingway and Cormac McCarthy,
but with a distinctive and insightful voice all his own.

Preble Teens have been sure to “Own the Night” this summer in
Teen Summer Reading. Some Teens have already started their
3rd Time Card, which means they’ve already read 50 hours this
Summer!
Haven’t signed up yet? You should! Summer Reading ends July
28th. The theme “Own the Night” has inspired some fun Teen
Programs, including “Be a Ninja,” where Teens showed off their
Ninja slicing skills tournament-style with Wii Speed Slice. Ninja
gloves went to the first place winners. Trendy mustache anyone? Incognito/Spies gave Teens a chance to make tattoo
sleeves and photo booth props (which included a fake moustache!) for all their spy needs. Southern Ohio Supernatural, a
local paranormal investigation group, stopped by the Eaton
Branch on June 23rd and discussed ghosts in Preble County.
They showed off their equipment and took questions relating to
the paranormal.
A Star Wars Program is coming up at many Branches and there
will be another tournament with Wii Lightsaber Duel. Top Winners receive a Star Wars Lightsaber! Also, we’re making Princess Leia headbands or Yoda Ears, eating Star Wars snacks, and
crafting Pool Noodles into Lightsabers! Then, at the Eaton
Branch, we’re celebrating all the end-of-the-world Teen Lit that
is popular by holding a Project: End of the World on July 18th @
3 p.m. Inspired by the crazy challenges on Project Runway,
Teens will be challenged to make an end-of-the-world outfit
with random supplies (bubble wrap, Duck Tape, etc.). We will
also be making electrical tape bracelets and wristbands. Finally
at the Eaton Branch we’ll be serving Monster Food and showing
