Summer Reading Kick-off
The kick off for Summer Reading 2012 was held at the Eaton
Branch on Saturday, June 2 for all the children of Preble
County! The Brukner Nature Center was on hand to make the
event extra special. The children saw a variety of nocturnal
animals, including a possum and an owl!
Over 90 children and parents were on hand to make this
year’s first ever kick-off event for Summer Reading a great
success!

The Eaton Summer Reading Program is going great this year!
The first week we offered 3 programs with 332 people attending. The second week we held 2 programs with 288 people
attending. We have been very busy every day since the
program started and I would like to thank the circ desk staff
for all the hard work they have put in this year. They are a big
part of the success we are having this summer. Also I would
like to thank the public for their continued support, making

et ready for another great “Family Fun Night”? The Eaton
Library will host Steven’s
Puppets from Fort Wayne,
Indiana on Thursday Sept. 20th
at 6:30. The marionettes are
hand carved and painted. The
show we will be presenting is
Beauty and the Beast, a favorite
among children of all ages.
Steven’s Puppets has been doing
marionettes for over half a century. The voices are by professional actors accented by harp music. This will be a chance for
the children of Preble County to see live theater. As always
everything is free and open to the public. If you have any
questions call Teresa Deaton or Sarah Tozier at 456-4331.

Besides our Summer Reading Programs, many of our library branches
offer drop in programs for kids to play board games and Wii.
Book Sale News: The Eldorado Branch of the Preble
County District Library will hold a book sale on the following
days: Tuesday, August 14 from 10am-5pm; Thursday, August
16 from 2-7pm, and Saturday, August 18 from 9:30am-4pm.
Beginning on September 4, the Eldorado Branch will begin
offering an ongoing book sale Tuesdays from 10am-5pm; on
Thursdays from 2-7pm, and on Saturdays from 1-4pm.
The West Manchester Branch of the Preble County District
Library will begin offering an ongoing book sale during open
hours: Monday 10am-5pm, Wednesday 2-7pm, and Saturday
9:30am-12:30pm.
Did you know that stuffed animals and other toys can be checked
out from your local library as well?
For those of you with tablet/e-reader access, if it seems like every
time you put a popular e-book on hold you have to wait forever
you're not alone. You'll be happy to hear that due to demand, we are
purchasing best seller e-books out of the consortium so you
have access to them more quickly.
Did you know the Eaton Library has a free Video Phone for the Deaf?
Your public library is an integral part of your community. We are
always finding ways to work hand-in-hand to make hard times better.
Did you know that the Eaton Library is a site for the Jacob's Ladder
Program? Some children do not have access to a nutritional meal
when school is out for the summer. The Jacob's Ladder Program
provides a free meal for these area children. Currently the Eaton
Library has about 25 children coming for these meals offered in the
children's programming area.

The New Paris Library participated in the 2012 New Paris Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Business Expo.

Carrie Burkhardt was also recently hired after
serving as an Eaton Library Volunteer, then as a
Page. Now she is an Eaton Library Assistant who

Homeschool Coordinator and Youth Dept. Asst.
Jessica Holton has been volunteering at the West
Alexandria Branch Library for years and was recently hired to replace Tabitha Nies.

Eaton Branch as a Library Assistant.

ike Lloyd has been involved in OSU
Extension’s efforts over the past eighteen
months to work with the ongoing oil and
gas efforts in eastern Ohio from a variety of
viewpoints, including community adaptation and longer term philanthropic benefits
to the region. He also has served for many
years as the Enterprise Zone Administrator in the various counties
where he has been housed. He currently serves in Noble County
and has also worked in Monroe, Harrison, and Washington counties. He helped to organize (and currently serves as the secretary)
of the Noble County Community Foundation.
His special focus is Economic Development with interests in Oil &
Gas Development, Enterprise Zones, and Philanthropy.

Dinner Bell Donated
The Genealogy Staff wishes to
thank Mrs. Shirley Rhoades of
Lewisburg, Ohio for the wonderful cast-iron dinner bell she
recently donated to the Preble
County Room. Shirley had always wanted a dinner bell and
about 20 years ago, while she
was on a business trip, her husband, Herbert, surprised her
with the bell. He had purchased
it in an antique shop located in
Centerville, Indiana. By the time
she returned home, the bell
was mounted and ready for her to ring.
The markings on the bell indicate that it was made in 1886 by Montgomery Ward and Co., Chicago, Illinois, making it over 125 years old.
A special thank you goes out to Skip Rhoades for letting us know
about the bell in the first place, and also to Tom Davis, PCDL Maintenance, and Marvin Deaton for making a new home for this special
bell.
Next time you are in the south part of Eaton, stop by the Library
Administration Office (450 S. Barron St) to see our new bell. You
might even give it a ring or two in thanks to Shirley Rhoades for her
very generous gift.

Released in June, Gillian Flynn’s latest psychological thriller focuses on a marriage that isn’t as
perfect as it first appears. In Gone Girl, Amy Dunne disappears on the

Amy Hill Hearth’s latest novel due out in October. Miss Dreamsville
and the Collier County Women’s Literary Society introduces readers
to Jackie Hart, a Boston transplant to Naples, Florida who starts up a
literary club that allows ANYONE to join including a woman who did
prison time for allegedly killing her husband, a man of questionable
sexual preference, a young divorcee, as well as a Black woman. Unbeknownst to everyone in this racially segregated town, Jackie is the
anonymous Miss Dreamsville, host of a much-loved radio show. This
novel promises to make you laugh and cry.

departure from her Stephanie Plum series. The Husband List will be
published in December, 2012 and is set during the American Gilded
Age in 1894. Will the story contain Janet’s signature car explosion?
Don’t know, but the combustion engine was invented in 1885!
 It was announced on March 26, 2012 that Universal Studios and
Focus Features secured the film rights to the Fifty Shades of Grey
Trilogy. Casting is under way. FYI: Fifty Shades began life as
“Twilight” fan fiction that British author E.L. James later rewrote into
the erotica trilogy so popular today.
 Nora Roberts’ next Eve Dallas book will be published in late 2013.

Between the Covers
Adults are reading "Between the Covers" of their favorite books this
summer. Summer Reading at the Eaton Branch has brought out 186 adults
who love to read. Between all of the other branches there are 178 adults
signed up! You can still register to read and review your favorite books
through the end of July. You will receive a book bag just for signing up
(while supplies last). And your review will be your entry into our weekly
prize drawings. Our grand prizes, to be drawn July 30th, is an eReader for
each of the branches of PCDL.

Preble Teens have been sure to “Own the Night” this summer in
Teen Summer Reading. Some Teens have already started their
3rd Time Card, which means they’ve already read 50 hours this
Summer!
Haven’t signed up yet? You should! Summer Reading ends July
28th. The theme “Own the Night” has inspired some fun Teen
Programs, including “Be a Ninja,” where Teens showed off their
Ninja slicing skills tournament-style with Wii Speed Slice. Ninja
gloves went to the first place winners. Trendy mustache anyone? Incognito/Spies gave Teens a chance to make tattoo
sleeves and photo booth props (which included a fake moustache!) for all their spy needs. Southern Ohio Supernatural, a
local paranormal investigation group, stopped by the Eaton
Branch on June 23rd and discussed ghosts in Preble County.
They showed off their equipment and took questions relating to
the paranormal.
A Star Wars Program is coming up at many Branches and there
will be another tournament with Wii Lightsaber Duel. Top Winners receive a Star Wars Lightsaber! Also, we’re making Princess Leia headbands or Yoda Ears, eating Star Wars snacks, and
crafting Pool Noodles into Lightsabers! Then, at the Eaton
Branch, we’re celebrating all the end-of-the-world Teen Lit that
is popular by holding a Project: End of the World on July 18th @
3 p.m. Inspired by the crazy challenges on Project Runway,
Teens will be challenged to make an end-of-the-world outfit
with random supplies (bubble wrap, Duck Tape, etc.). We will
also be making electrical tape bracelets and wristbands. Finally
at the Eaton Branch we’ll be serving Monster Food and showing
a Teen Monster Movie on July 25 @ 3 p.m. Practice your Zombie shooting skills, try your best at our Zombie Jello Brain eating
competition, and eat Unicorn Poop Cookies! Then watch a
Teen Monster Movie!
