Principal’s Message
Inside this issue:
Hello PTSA Friends,
March is a month for
"Hairspray" and registration. Our nationally
recognized theater program, led by Steven
Volpe, promises another resounding success
with their presentation
of “Hairspray” in the
PAC. If you have not
been to an Arcadia High musical you are truly
missing out on one of the best entertainment
deals in Southern California.
March is an important month for registration
and thinking about the 2015-16 school year. If
you have a question regarding a course, please
consult the curriculum guide, soon to be available online on our school website. Departments will also begin holding their AP preview
presentations during lunch throughout the
month of March. The goal of these presentations is to give our students as much information as possible regarding specific AP
course expectations and work load. We encourage students to investigate AP courses in
specific areas which interest them.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Vicky Stiles, PTSA President
If you haven’t been on campus recently then
you haven’t seen the newly remodeled Library
and Media Center and Apache Cafe. You may
remember that both spaces were dark and
seemingly dysfunctional. Now we have a
modern, comfortable and most importantly,
welcoming library and cafeteria befitting the
students of Arcadia High School.
Another recently reopened part of campus is
the Apache Cafe. No longer a pit, the Cafe is
styled after collegiate dining halls. There is
even a juice bar operated by Robeks offering
smoothies and create-your-own-juice
concoctions. There are plans for a recreation
table, which in addition to the two flat screen
televisions, reinforces the idea that the space
is truly a cafe where
students can lounge
and linger, whether
they are discussing
their English project
or last night’s game.

A Message From Student Services
By John Finn, Assistant Principal
Personal Items
Please remind your sons and daughters to keep their belongings with
them. Many times we have cell phones, backpacks, gym bags and other
personal items turned in that were found in the lunch area, restroom and
other assorted locations on campus. Often times the items have considerable monetary value. Unfortunately, in a few situations we have students report lost or stolen items. In most situations these items were lost
or stolen when the owner was not in close proximity to their bag or backpack. Also, please have your sons and daughters avoid bringing a large
amount of cash or expensive items to school. If students keep their items
within their vision and avoid bringing unnecessary expensive items to
school, they will minimize their risk of losing or having an item stolen.
Cell Phones/Internet
Technology has brought many positive communication tools to us but, with that, it has also reduced our privacy. It is important for your students to realize whatever they do in public could
become the subject of a posting on one of the popular or not so popular sights. Often times this
posting might cause embarrassment to your student. Whether they are at a dance or out with
friends at the mall, their actions can be the focus of a posting. It is very important that students
realize anything they do in a public area can become very public, to many viewers, even without
their permission. Reinforce the importance of appropriate behavior in all activities so that your
student can avoid a potentially embarrassing and harmful situation. It is important students realize
potential colleges, universities and employers have access to the same information their friends do
and sometimes a posting can have a negative effect on acceptance for either a college or job.
Attendance, Academics, Behavior
Please continue to reinforce the importance of good attendance, academic focus and proper behavior. The Spring tends to bring with it more incidents of students facing negative consequences for
one of these three areas. It is important that all students stay on the right track but most especially
for seniors and juniors. A failing grade is more difficult for a senior or junior to make up since
they have less time before their graduation date. Violations in attendance or behavior can also include the loss of senior or junior privileges such as prom, grad night and in some cases, graduation
and their diploma. Please emphasize that senioritis is not a recognized illness and cannot be used
as an excuse.
Positives
The above information is intended as support for your sons and daughters as we work with you to
provide them the best learning experience possible, both in and out of the classroom. The Student
Services Department is fortunate to be working with so many honest, hardworking and respectful
students. The number of students that have turned in items they found, including money, is heartwarming. Thank you for sending your students to Arcadia High School and all of us in the Student Services Department appreciate you and your students.

2015-2016 COURSE SELECTION AND INFORMATION
Believe it or not, it’s almost time for students to begin thinking about next year’s classes!
Starting the week of February 16th, Counselors will have conducted Orientation and Programming
sessions with all freshmen, sophomore and junior students and parents.
The process of Course Selection involves the following steps:
1) Course Selection Assembly – students received:
 Curriculum Guide
 Course Selection Draft Sheet
2) Students and Parents research and review classes:
 Read class descriptions in the Curriculum Guide
 Talk to parents, teachers and students about classes in which they are interested.
 Choose carefully – there are very strict policies regarding dropping and changing classes
3) Students meet with Counselors to select classes:
 Students come to Career Center with their English class.
 Students receive their transcript.
 Students bring completed Draft Course Selection Sheet to meeting.
 Counselors meet individually with all students to review their transcript, graduation status, future educational plans and options and summer school recommendations. Together they will fill
out the final Course Selection Sheet and complete a thorough review of their high school progress.
4) Students take Final Course Selection Sheet home for parent signature.
5) Students return the signed Final Course Selection Sheet to the Counselor of the Day desk by due
date indicated on the Course Selection Sheet. Students need to make their own personal copy before
returning the sheet.
6) Any adjustments to these selections can only be made during PAW week (Program Adjustment
Week), May 26 – May 29.
2014 – 2015 Course Selection Dates
Powerpoint presentations used for both the student assemblies and parent evening meetings are now
posted on the AHS Counselor website: counseling.ahs.ausd.net (click on “Grade Specific Documents and the student’s grade, then click on the Spring Assembly link).

AHS Grad Night 2015 - 6/17 11PM to 6/18 4AM
CALLING ALL PARENTS OF SENIORS!
Our seniors have been working hard for their entire academic years and Grad Night is a FUNtastic way
for them to celebrate their last event as a class (only seniors attend). Many teachers and administrators
also join in the festivities. Grad Night is a party hosted mostly by PARENTS OF SENIORS...we need
you to help! Please sign up to help on our signup genius link (parents of any AHS student are most welcome to volunteer!):
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094baaae2aa4f85-adult
Unfortunately, a mistake was made – at Apache Days, many of you paid $100 for Grad
Night, but this was the price for the graduating class of 2013. In 2014, it was $110 and
for 2015, our intent was to charge $120 to cover rising costs of running the event. The
current price has been $120 since October 2014. We are planning to raise the price to
$130 beginning April 1st and $140 on May 1st. Please note these prices reflect a
change from what was advertised during Apache Days.
Our Grad Night committee is working diligently to figure out solutions for this error…but with most of the vendor costs going up, we are now in a financial bind. We
are at risk of having some things for Grad Night unavailable. Working with PTA we have been able to create a PayPal link that will allow parents to go online to help
out the Class of 2015. The link will soon be live so be sure to look for it on
ListServe and the PTSA website. An additional donation of $25.00 is recommended,
but more is GREATLY appreciated. Please help us fix our error and make Grad
Night what it should be for our seniors – a fun, safe, local celebration of their accomplishments! And if you haven’t already done so, be sure to purchase your senior’s Grad Night ticket soon at the ASB office.
Donation checks payable to “AHS PTSA” will be accepted at the AHS front desk. Please write “Grad
Night” on the front of the envelope and on the memo line of your check and give it to Ms. Shari Omarsaid at the front office of the Student Services Building. Gift card donations are also appreciated!
(Consider purchasing scrip cards – see Page 19 for Scrip Order form)
Grad Night senior parent meetings are as follows:
 Mar 30, 7 PM - Lecture Hall
 May 4, 7 PM - location TBD
 June 1, 7 PM - Lecture Hall
Thank you for your support. It will be a wonderful and memorable evening for our children. If you have
questions, feel free to contact us.
Hope to see you at our next parent meeting!

SWEET TREATS FOR AHS TEACHERS & STAFF
With Love and Appreciation from PTSA!
There is nothing better to cheer up your day than finding a special treat in your box. Throughout the
year, small goodies have appeared in the teacher and staff boxes from the AHS PTSA. On Halloween,
there were Bugs & Kisses, on Thanksgiving, Indian corn, and right before the holidays, a happy
Snowman ready to make a warm cup of cocoa. All of these special treats were designed and produced
by the PTSA Teacher Treats co-chairs, Fay Shin-Maman and Doris Hayata.
For Valentine’s Day, they coordinated and packed over 250 delicious bags of cookies for all of the
teachers and staff, with the help of many of our amazing PTSA parents.

AEF—YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
You may have noticed AEF lawn signs adorning the entrances of all
AUSD campuses. This visual campaign is to build community awareness about
the Arcadia Educational Foundation (AEF) and its mission. The signs serve as a
"thank you" to our current donors, and will hopefully encourage more of the Arcadia community to support our great schools and students.
The lawn sign campaign goes in conjunction with the AEF Annual Appeal letter arriving soon in
Arcadia mailboxes. This appeal letter provides details on what educational benefits AEF is currently
funding, the future goals of the foundation, and why AUSD relies on private community support to keep
the high level of public education in Arcadia schools. AEF is targeting raising money in part so AUSD
can hire college counselors at the HS. According to a 2011 State of College Admissions report, only a
quarter of public schools have a dedicated college counselor, as opposed to three-quarters of private
schools. This places students at a disadvantage compared to their peers who enjoy college counseling.
We are aiming to increase community participation in supporting AEF & Arcadia schools. Currently AEF has a participation rate of 4%...imagine the enhancements and benefits AEF could provide
with a bit more community participation. Twenty percent participation will maintain and expand counselors. It is a goal worth striving for!

During the last week of March, Counselors will conduct assemblies at the Middle Schools for

There will be a Freshman Orientation evening event for incoming 9th grade students and their
parents on Thursday, April 16 in the Arcadia High School North Gym (detailed information will follow). At this orientation, we will provide the student assembly course selection information to the parents as well as have presentations by various AHS departments and programs.
SENIORS
Changes to your second semester schedule or receiving a D or F in college prep classes during
your senior year may negatively impact your admissions status to 4 year universities. Please check the
websites of the colleges and universities to which you have applied to see if they have established deadlines for reporting changes. Please note: Contacting the universities with changes to your schedule or
reporting a D or F senior year semester grade does not guarantee that your admissions status is secure.
Remember, the admissions office tentatively accepts you based on reported grades up to 11th grade
AND reported senior year courses, along with admissions tests scores and other criteria. The final determination for admissions will be made after the university receives your final transcript.
