Perhaps you are a snowbird with a
parent or other loved one whom you
just don’t want to leave at home “Up
North.” Or maybe you have a family member who needs help “getting
started” in the morning: getting
out of bed, bathing, taking medication, or dealing with the bathroom.

surgical procedure may need help

Are you embarrassed by the otherthan-fresh odor of your bathroom?
Do you wish that you knew of a
place that carried just the right nonfattening hostess gift?
Did your best friend just move to
Lakewood Ranch with his greatest
canine pal-of-all-time dog — and
then confess to you that he’d found
the dog’s favorite dish broken at the
bottom of the moving box?
Is your sister, the one who owns every fashion-trendy “container-to-carry-everything-in” known to modern
fashion, coming to town? You know
for a fact that she’ll want to check out a
local store that just might have an item
so unusual that it will be the talk of all
of her friends on her arrival back home.
There are solutions to each of these
monumentally vexing situations, and all
of the solutions can be found in one store
on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. The
name of the store is Obsessories, and,
yes they carry:
• Poo-Pourri – a liquid which can be
sprayed on the surface of the water in
your porcelain throne, and that thereafter acts to destroy “incoming” odors.

• One-size-fits-all wine bottle stoppers topped with various large colored “jewels” that will surely catch the
light of the candles around your hostess’s table.
• A dog food bowl that proudly
proclaims itself as the source of “Bad
Dog Breath.”
• A purse made from the cut-apart
halves of an old 33 rpm vinyl record.
You might even remember the album
or the artist, if you’re old enough!
Janie Pieper’s long experience in the
retail business has infused her with
a real eye for the unusual, and her
store, Obsessories, carries “unusual”
to some pretty for out limits! You
may be amazed to find, for example,
that there is such a thing as a Wonder
Bread Cookbook...and a Heinz Ketchup Cookbook!
Or, if cooking isn’t your thing, you
can find wine glasses with snappy
sayings on them, or scalloped leather
purses that can be embroidered with
a friend’s initials. Is there a new baby
in the family? Step right up, folks! Obsessories will provide for you a baby
outfit which proclaims on its front:
STROLLER TODAY; PORSCHE TOMORROW! If your family has a good
sense of humor, you may prefer the
outfit which states boldly: “My Family
Tree Is Full Of Nuts!”
Did you install an elegant tropicalthemed ceiling fan in your new Lake-
wood Ranch home, only to look at the
generic fan cord pulls provided by the
installer and say, “Ugh!”? Don’t worry. Obsessories stocks fan cord pulls
made from exotic looking sea shells –
very coastal.
What is the most unusual necklace/
pendant combination you’ve ever
seen? When you go to Obsessories,
take a look at the magnetic bottle cap
necklaces, which were designed by a

sixth-grade student, and which feature
interchangeable jeweled or otherwise
enhanced bottle caps that attach to the
magnet on the cord.
Clocks which do more than just give
you the time of day are also to be found
at Obsessories. There is a Mona Lisa
clock, featuring the face of that famous
Renaissance babe, but the talking wall
alarm clock may be the most unusual.
The metal clock is shaped like a face,
and when you push on the “nose”, the
eyes light up and the clock vocally tells
you the time of day.
Obsessories has numerous items that
they can monogram in-house, from
purses to dog collars. If the 1960s were
your “era,” you can find peace sign earrings at Pieper’s store, just the thing to
go with your tie-dyed T-shirt.
Candles, desk accessories, a “Fotofall” (a photo print holder which looks
like ‘60s-era freeform lamp – with
small clips suspended from thin wires
radiating out from a central post),
Obsessories carries the largest collection of the unusual in greater Lakewood Ranch.
My choice? Well...there’s this coffee
cup which declares that “Love Conquers All – Even Snoring!” It would
make a most appropriate gift for our
last houseguest.

ASIAN CUISINE FROM 1
He: “Look at what I just found. This
could be the answer. I was over at
Publix – you know, the new one at
Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and State
Road 70 – and I picked up a menu from
a new restaurant that just opened
over there. It’s called Asian Cuisine,
and the menu is HUGE. It says here
that they’re open seven days a week,
and the place is not just a Chinese
restaurant. The menu says that they
have Thai, Japanese, and Malaysian
dishes, too. And, it talks about healthy
choices in food. Guess that might be
better than burgers and bar food. How
about it?”
She: “Why not? It could be a change
of pace. I’d really like a healthy meal.
I had a burger and fries for lunch, and
I felt that I had a lead bowling ball in
my stomach for a couple of hours after. In fact, I think that I’ve picked out
my choice for dinner at Asian Cuisine
tonight. I’m going to try the chicken
with cashew nuts. Sounds light, with
lots of taste, and maybe I’ll have some
hot tea with it. Are you ready to go?”
He: “I sure am. I’ve picked out the
crispy sliced duck. I know that you
like chicken better, but I love a great
duck dish. Let’s go!”
A couple of hours later they returned
home, pleased with their dinner
choices, and carrying a small takehome carton to heat up for tomorrow’s
lunch at work. After all, they couldn’t
resist having an egg roll appetizer before their main course.
The above scenario pretty much
tells what transpired when my wife
and I recently decided to try out the
Asian Cuisine restaurant at the new
Lakewood Walk shopping center. She
had the chicken; I had the duck, and
we both enjoyed our food.
Asian Cuisine is a different type of
place. As the menu indicates, it is not
just another “Chinese restaurant.” It
offers Japanese sushi, at least 16 different Thai and Malaysian dishes, lots
of appetizers, soups, and combination
dinners, as well as a host of your fa-
AROUND THE RANCH
vorite Chinese meals. Their dinner
menu runs to six columns. And they
also have a 23-item lunch menu, offering healthy choices at prices only a
little higher than the cost of a burger
joint combo. Lunch is served between
11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Asian Cuisine opens
at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and
at noon on Saturday and Sunday. They
also provide take-out service.
Asian Cuisine has a different “look”
from other Oriental restaurants. Once
you enter, you may be surprised to
see that it is very tastefully decorated.
There is a relaxed, quiet feeling about
the place, with peach colored tablecloths (yes, real tablecloths, with cloth
napkins!), beige walls, and mahoganystained chairs. Shadowbox sculpture
pictures adorn the walls. There are
gold lanterns hanging from the ceiling featuring floral designs and red
tassels. The rice is placed on your
table in a wooden container bound in
brass, with a lid, to keep the rice fresh
and warm. The waitstaff is efficient
and polite.
Manager William Cheung, a Greenbrook resident, tells us that Asian Cuisine is owned by a Hong-Kong based
company which prides itself in providing fresh food, properly made by experienced cooks. Sauces are their specialty, if you don’t count their soups.
Cheung showed me the huge wok in
which the chicken soup was simmering, pointing out that the soup takes
24 hours to cook properly before it is
ready to serve! He is especially proud
of the clean, organized kitchen at
Asian Cuisine.
Cheung made a point of saying that
Asian Cuisine aims to provide quality
food (that contains no MSG) in quantities that give good value to the diner.
As for my dining experience at Asian
Cuisine, I confess that I really didn’t
bring home a leftover box – I retained
my membership in the “Clean Plate
Club.” One warning, though: If you decide to use the mustard sauce on your
egg roll, use it very sparingly. It has a
real kick!

Another Look at Real Estate
in Today’s Financial Climate
It’s a good possibility and better than
average bet that your future portfolio should
again include real estate. Who do you trust?
Why not become your own boss? And why
risk your financial future on unaccountable
CEOs, the greed of corporate directors, and
investment talking heads? Even the educated
and wealthy were taken by Madoff, while
regulators watched.
At current prices, it makes sense to buy
and hold real estate or look for rental
Jim Soda, ABR, CSP, RRS properties that offer positive cash flow. Bank
Prudential Palms Realty foreclosures, short sales or just excellent
values may fit your investment needs.
A combination of your IRA, personal monies and loans may be the right
equation. What ever you decide, it is a good time to buy.
The year 2008 was a difficult one for our local real estate market. It began
with initial hopes of our prices nearing bottom. Many sellers held on to that
notion, some too long. Many aggressive sellers did sell. Some will continue to
wait for the right buyer.
In years past we didn’t know the term “short sale” or thought we would
ever need to know it. As time went on, short sale seminars developed and
short sale certifications were offered. We had short sale failures, short sale
success stories and long hours of unsettlement with loss specialists whose
job description the week before was “receptionist.” These departments simply
didn’t exist. Bank foreclosure numbers rose and unfortunately, keep rising.
Foreclosures are happening to hard-working families, some with unfortunate
circumstances. As if we needed more salt in our wounds, nearly the entire
credit market collapsed and more new terms emerged, such as “bailout” and
“TARP,” with debts now in the trillions.
So here we are in 2009. Many of the same problems still face us. We will
probably hear and learn new definitions and terms as we go along for the
credit ride. We are hopeful this year will be a better year with more positive
terms and success stories. Our position remains, the time to buy is now.
Allow yourself financial freedom with smart investments offering positive cash
flow. Be your own boss and start your real estate investment portfolio. Please
call us if you have any questions.

dealing with other post surgical activity. And if you are caring for an elderly

is going to require that you be out of

to whom do you turn?
Granny Nannies may have the answer to your dilemma.
Granny Nannies of Sarasota and
Manatee is operated by Andrew Burke,
a former law enforcement official who
has translated his experience in dealing with the investigation of criminal
cases on the local, state, and federal
levels into administrating his Granny
Nanny franchises. Managing a team of
health care professionals is not all that
different from managing a team of law
enforcement investigators, Burke said.
Either way, it still involves administrative and people skills.
Burke got into the Granny Nannies
home care business through his involvement in an automotive enthusiast charity called Cars for the Cure.
Through Cars for the Cure, he met
Rob Hodgson, the founder of Granny
Nannies. Hodgson started the company after going through the type of experience that prompts many Granny
Nannies clients to seek out their services: he needed to find qualified and
quality help to enable an aging grandmother to continue to live in her own
home. Hodgson found very little in
the way of qualified assistance available to those people who needed help

– not nursing home help, but help to
continue to participate in life. Granny
Nannies was the result of his searching for the best solution, and Andrew
Burke now offers the Granny Nannies
experience to Sarasota and Manatee
counties.
What makes Granny Nannies special
and worth looking into?
First of all, Granny Nannies hires
only health care professionals, not just
“adult baby sitters.”
Every Granny Nannies caregiver has
the minimal qualification of being either a certified nursing assistant or
home health aide. They are therefore
authorized by the state to perform tasks
that require a skill level not found at

many strictly “companion care” agencies. In addition, they are carefully
screened as to qualifications and both
personal and employment references,
and are given a criminal background
and driver’s license check prior to being hired by Granny Nannies.
The advantage for the person being
cared for becomes obvious when, for
example, a patient may need additional help as time goes on. With Granny
Nannies’ service, the fact that the
caregiver is perhaps “overqualified”
for some basic services makes it possible for the patient to keep the same
caregiver if he or she begins to need
extra help. The result of this is that the
patient feels more comfortable having
LAKEWOOD RANCH HERALD SUPPLEMENT 7
the same caregiver, and is therefore
more relaxed, is able to maintain a
better attitude toward life, and able to
stay in their own home.
The type of need that may prompt
potential clients to seek out Granny
Nannies’ services may vary widely.
The most typical scenario is that of
the family that wants to enable a disabled or elderly family member to
continue to live in their own home –
the place where they feel most comfortable. On the other hand, Granny
Nannies even provides services to
people who are living in quarters as
temporary as a hotel, and can do so on
very short notice. A family can come
here to vacation and keep their loved
one with them, hiring Granny Nannies to take care of any special needs
and enabling the patient to enjoy
Florida, too.
Granny Nannies offers their “upgraded” services at competitive prices
because they run a “tight ship” financially. They keep their overhead low,
which allows them to pay their caregivers a higher rate while at the same
time offering their services at hourly
rates that start at only $15-16 per hour
for the services of a Certified Nursing Assistant. This rate, according to
Andrew Burke, is $5-6 per hour less
than the average rate in the Sarasota
area. If you’d like more information,

Manatee Chamber, United Way
are Ranch’s newest neighbors
By Jan Hatfield,
Digital Village Manager
I’m happy to share my column
this month with our nest neighbors, the Manatee Chamber of
Commerce and the United Way.
If you didn’t make it to the grand
opening or open house of the new
facility for the Manatee Chamber
of Commerce and United Way
of Manatee County, you’ll want
to make a point to stop by soon.
These two organizations partnered to build the McClure Center, a 9,000-sq.-ft. facility located
at 4215 Concept Court in the Business Park in Lakewood Ranch. A
visit to the lobby alone will yield a
bag full of information about our
community, local businesses and
agencies dedicated to meeting social service and human needs in
Manatee County.
The Manatee Chamber delivers
nationally-recognized business
resources and assistance, along
with a calendar of networking
and educational events designed
to ensure that employers and
employees have the tools necessary to succeed. Priorities for
the Chamber this year include:
healthcare access, quality and
capacity; local economic stimuli;
partnering with local government
to enhance “business friendly”
policies; transportation; education; and young professionals
programming, to name just a few.

agencies by addressing the human service needs of all residents
in Manatee County. Through the
support of more than 70 human
service programs and initiatives,
United Way focuses on creating
an impact in four main areas:
strengthening children and families; enriching the lives of seniors;
empowering people to independence; and assisting people in crisis. Now in its 66th year of serving Manatee County, United Way

Both the Manatee Chamber and

LAKEWOOD RANCH HERALD SUPPLEMENT 9
Keeping yourself free of some of Florida’s unwanted wildlife
By Ernie Soller, Community Correspondent
Forget bats in the belfry. You might
have rats in your attic. Have you
heard small noises in your walls, or
does your dog suddenly start to paw
at the baseboard in a particular area
where you see nothing amiss? You
might have rats chewing on your
electrical wires. Can you say “electrical fire”? Does the phrase “eaten
out of house and home” start ringing
bells in your mind? Did you notice
any strange odors when you returned
your Christmas decorations to their
storage area in the attic above your
garage after the holiday? How about
darkish areas along some of your roof
trusses? Did you see any small dark
colored droppings in the attic? These
are all signs of rat infestation, and if
you’ve seen them, you need to take
action, not next week, but now.
Do your store your pet’s food in
cardboard boxes or paper bags in
your garage? Do you have fruit trees
in your backyard? Do you have palm
trees whose fronds overhang the roof
of your home? These are all contributing factors which might promote
an invasion of your home by the “roof
rat” (Rattus rattus), also known as the
citrus rat, black rat, or fruit rat, the
most common rat in Florida. Accord-
ing to a University of Florida study,
the roof rat represents the largest rodent problem in the state.
Note: In Lakewood Ranch, many
residents have expressed their amazement that, due to deed restrictions,
they are limited in the number of citrus trees that they are allowed to plant
in their back yards. After all, this is
Florida, some people say. But one of
the prime reasons why the planting of
such trees is limited is that their presence promotes the growth of the rat
population, especially since roof rats
tend to not only live in trees, but they
just love to eat the sweet fruit that
Florida citrus trees produce.
PLEASE NOTE AND ABIDE BY
THE DEED RESTRICTIONS REGARDING FRUIT TREES!
Some of the restrictions are, by homeowner association:
Country Club/Edgewater:
• Citrus trees are only permitted
in rear yards and are limited to one.
Owners are required to remove all
dropped fruit, blossoms, etc., and not
allow this to accumulate more than
seven days.
Greenbrook:
• Citrus trees are only permitted in
rear yards and limited to one.
Summerfield/Riverwalk:
• Citrus trees are only permitted in
rear yard. Dropped fruit should be removed promptly.
Prevention of rats is actually fairly
simple. Rats need water, food, and
shelter to live. Take away any or all of
those things, and rats will not be living in your home. Make sure that pet
food is kept in solid, covered containers, and clean up any kibble spills immediately. Don’t overwater your yard
and create puddles of water near your
home. Why provide a water source for
rats close by your house?
Making it harder for them to enter
your home is also going to help. If you
have palm trees that are placed close
to the house, it might be a good idea to
trim away any fronds which overhang
the roof, since roof entry through a
small hole, even an unscreened vent,
is an easy way for a rat to get in and
start living under your roof.
If you absolutely must have fruit
trees in your yard, the University of
Florida recommends that you install
a “rat guard,” consisting of a piece of
sheet metal placed around the trunk
of the tree and secured by means of
wire, which will prevent rats from
climbing up into the tree, as the sheet
metal is too smooth for them to climb
over.
The U of F study also confirms that
rats, in order to get to water, have been
known to chew through plastic, and
even lead water pipes. This fact was
also confirmed by Jeff Norris, of Nuisance Wildlife Removal in Ellenton,
who e-mailed me a picture of a plastic
plumbing ventilation pipe which had
been exposed in an outside wall of a
home undergoing renovation. Rats
had chewed a hole in the pipe, which
then gave them access to the underroof area of the home, where they set
up living quarters. The homeowner
became concerned when she heard
noises coming from her attic.
Once rats start living in a structure,
they can start to multiply at a rapid
rate. Rhoda the Rat will advertise to
Ricky Rat (and any other male rats in
the area), that she is in heat by urinating all over the area where she is
living, and she comes into heat every
four days! Likewise, Ricky Rat also
uses this method of communicating
his presence and readiness to breed.

2009 SPRING EVENTS
AT LAKEWOOD RANCH
Rats are very prolific breeders, and
each of Rhoda’s litters will consist of
six to eight young.
How do you combat rats if you’re not
the Pied Piper? As mentioned above,
rats need a food source, water, and
shelter. Take away one or more of
these, and you will not have rats. But,
if you know you have rats, or suspect
that they might be trying to establish
a colony in your home, there are some
things you can do. First of all, make
sure that there are no openings in
your roof area that could allow a rat
to enter. You might want to secure
the services of a qualified pest control professional who specializes in
rodents, since they will know where
to look, and how to seal up these areas. (Note: many of the pest control
companies in our area deal primarily
with insect pests, and may or may not
have the background or equipment to
deal with rats, so check with the service provider prior to hiring them to
make sure that they are qualified.) Rat

Presented by:
traps work well, but must be left in
place for more than just a few days,
since rats may avoid “something
new” that has been introduced into
their environment. Poison baits also
work, especially those that contain
anti-coagulating agents but, keep in
mind, the rats that take the bait may
not end up in the area where the bait
was placed. Baits should only be used
in areas that cannot be accessed by
family pets or non-nuisance wildlife.
Rats do have natural predators, such
as birds of prey and snakes. Nonpoisonous snakes, such as the yellow
rat snake, are some of the best rat
destroyers around, especially since
they can go into the same places that
the rats go. Care should be taken that
these beneficial animals are not destroyed, since their presence may
indicate the presence of their favorite prey in the area. Elimination of
such creatures could result in an unwanted increase in the local rodent
population.

LAKEWOOD RANCH HERALD SUPPLEMENT 15
hosted the inaugural Jim McMahon
Charity Golf Tournament, held in
conjunction with this year’s Super
Bowl. McMahon, of Chicago Bears
and former Super Bowl fame, invited
dozens of sports and entertainment
celeb friends to join him in raising
money for three charities: Hope for
the Warriors, the Lynda McMahon
Ferguson Literacy Foundation, and
the Lakewood Ranch Community
Fund. The two day extravaganza
took place right here on the Ranch
with a “pairing’s party” on Jan. 29 at
John Saputo’s incredible Budweiser
distributorship digs, and the 18-hole
golf tourney on Jan. 30 at the Country
Club.
The private pairing’s party, complete
with a breath-taking ice bar designed
by sponsor Patron Tequila and food
by the Polo Grill’s Fete Catering, was
humming until the wee hours of the
morning. Retired USMC Gen. Dickerson escorted numerous warriors
who flew in from South Carolina and
Texas for the tournament and party.
All had stories to tell, but not that
night – it was time to have fun. Other attendees included boxing champ
Floyd Merriweather, Willie Gault,
actor Kevin Sorbo (no loin cloth, ladies), Mark Lemke, Mark Rypien,
Ottis Anderson, singer Steve Azar,
Darren Veitch, and Walter Briggs.
Former NFL player Larry Lee and
his “Back In The Day” band provided
the music. A live auction helped raise
additional funds.
Friday’s shotgun start of 18 “fivesomes” (four person teams with an
assigned celebrity mate or two), off to
a late start due to some unseasonable
rain, was led by McMahon and our
golf pro Scott Lamoureaux. With
pro golfer John Daly setting the pace,
country singer Ira Dean entertaining
on nearly every tee, and the attending
warriors taking full advantage of the
course, the event was a huge success.
Despite the chilling winds, there was
enough liquid refreshment to keep
folks warm. Although many teams
were into some serious golf (warrior
Joe Torry shot a hole-in-one), there
were a significant number of golfers
who were out for good time. At one
point, the traffic on the course backed
up to include 12 carts of players and
supporters jointly covering the last
five holes.
The two days ended with a private
dinner party hosted by McMahon
and his fiancée Laurie Navon at
the Lakewood Ranch Holiday Inn,
to thank their friends and the community volunteers for a successful
event. A core of volunteers led by the
amazing organizer Becky Miller (of
Best Western Atrea Hotel) included
Tonya Atchison, Robin Parsons,
Denise and Jerry Hearn, Christie Payne, Jamie Gephardt, Lydia
Kolbus, Gina Morgando, Maggie Mitchell, Kyle Sudbury, Steve
Gardner, Catherine and Bill Carter, Catherine’s son Brock Hillman
(who flew in from Seattle to lend a
hand), my husband Preston and me.
Sometimes volunteers do get to have
more fun.
Don’t forget to send me (smoling@
tamapbay.rr.com) some fun and interesting news that’s fit to print.
Just when you think the hectic holidays are over, the new year gets off
to a racing start: There’s no slowing down, no rest for the weary, and
no boredom in retirement! January
ended with a flurry of activity, late
nights, and lots of laughs, but more
on that later.
Lynn and Bill Griffiths recently
celebrated 47 years of wedded bliss.
The secret to their happiness? Lynn
is a great cook and Bill is a great eater. I tip my wine glass to you both and
wish you many more happy years.
It seems there is more than the

lingers as well. Congratulations to

on their recent engagement. They
look so great together. Sincere best
wishes to the happy couple as they

There are rumors running around
that a wee one will arrive at MacAllister’s in a few months. Do they
make plaid diapers? I guess there
will be many happy hours of a different sort in the near future.
Ann Marie Marinaccio was seen
at the Polo Grill lunching with author
David Hagberg. They were deep in
conspiratorial conversation discussing mysteries unknown – at least for
now. All the plotting surrounds Ann
Marie’s successful Rotary Club’s

a character in David’s next novel of
international intrigue. She gets to
choose her “personality” — spy or
heroine. Humm…delicious possibilities! Stay tuned; maybe the locals will

Official dedication of Imagine
School at Lakewood Ranch held
Lakewood Ranch facility for the 2009‘10 school year.
The partnership with The Institute for School Innovation (www.ifsi.
org) makes the West Florida region
unique, as all of its six schools deliver
instruction using the Project CHILD
method of innovative, hands-on
learning. Students of varied learning
styles practice skills in center-based
activities meant to target high-level
thinking. As students learn to work
independently alongside their peers,
teachers are free to deliver personalized instruction to rotating individuals and small groups. Project CHILD
also utilizes a triangulated teacher
cluster, wherein each student receives
daily instruction from three separate
teachers, each an expert in their own
subject area, and keeps these three
teachers for three years.
Imagine Schools' philosophy stresses the importance of character development alongside strong academic
instruction. Imagine School at Lakewood Ranch has monthly themed
character assemblies, recognizing individual students for good character,
and students will be working on contributions for the national Imagine
Schools character essay contest. Parent involvement is also one of Imagine
Schools' “Measures of Excellence,”
and the Lakewood Ranch School encourages parent volunteers on campus
and in the classroom. Their Thanksgiving pageant was a particularly
family-oriented event, entirely run
by the teachers and parent volunteers
who prepared and served lunch for all
the students and their relatives, who
dined together as a school family.
The dedication of Imagine School
at Lakewood Ranch, affectionately
referred to by Steve Sajewski as “The

the new beginning of the school in

2009-‘10 school year. Bradenton
Christian School and Christ Presbyterian Church are in the final stages
of working out the details of this
endeavor. Christ Presbyterian is located just north of the intersection of
Upper Manatee Road/Lakewood
Ranch Boulevard and S.R. 64, which
is easily accessible to many residents
in East Manatee.
The preschool will serve 4-yearolds and mirror the education offered at Bradenton Christian’s main
campus since 1960. The voluntary
prekindergarten (VPK) program is a
free program sponsored by the state
of Florida and is accepted at Bradenton Christian School. The program’s
primary goal is to encourage early
education for all families.
The preschool curriculum at Bradenton Christian School focuses on
preparing students for kindergarten
in the core subject areas as well as
spiritual, social and physical development. Students are also exposed to
Spanish, computer, physical education, library time and music throughout each week. The VPK program
schedule is Monday through Friday, 8
– 11 a.m. In addition to the VPK schedule, the school offers extended hours
for a fee.
To learn more about how to enroll
at Bradenton Christian School, contact Jannon Pierce, director of admissions at 941-792-5454, Ext. 117, [email protected] or visit
the school’s Web site at www.bcspanthers.org.
Founded in 1960, Bradenton Christian School (BCS), a fully accredited,
inter-denominational school with a
student body of approximately 600
in preschool through 12th grade.
BCS offers honors and AP courses, award-winning music and art,
championship athletics, weekly chapels, media production, foreign language, transportation, and tuition assistance.

A dedication ceremony for Imagine School at Lakewood Ranch was
held Jan. 21, serving to officially welcome its kindergarten through grade
five students, faculty, and staff to
their permanent home at 10535 Portal Crossing. The tuition-free public
charter school opened its doors in
August in a temporary location at the
Braden River Baptist Church on State
Road 64 while the Lakewood Ranch
site completed construction.
The school leader of Imagine School
at Lakewood Ranch, Steve Sajewski, enjoyed seeing his students and
teachers bring life to the pale yellow
building that looks like it was built to
be a place of learning. The current
staff of nine teachers and 124 students participated in the ceremony
with their original song “This School
is Our School,” (to the tune of “This
Land is Your Land”). The song is a
tribute to the ownership they feel in
their new facility, which is complete
with a new playground, classrooms
with windows, and a cafeteria with a
freshly painted mural of their shark
mascot.
Also speaking at the dedication
were Harry Kinnan, Manatee School
Board Member; Dr. Sally Butzin, president and executive director for The
Institute of School Innovation and the
Creator of Project CHILD; Rex Jensen, president and CEO of SchroederManatee Ranch, and Dennis Bakke,
who started Imagine Schools with his
wife and partner Eileen Bakke. Based
in Arlington, Va., their shared goal
was to restore vision and purpose
to schools and return parents to the
full participation in the education of
their children. Their “learning communities of achievement and hope”
now serve more than 35,000 students
nationwide.
Imagine School at Lakewood Ranch
will join the Imagine Schools family
of over 70 schools this year, making it
the largest charter school company in
the country. This past August, Imagine Schools opened five new schools
(North Port, Land O'Lakes, St. Petersburg, Tallahassee, and Lakewood
Ranch) in the West Florida region,
in addition to its existing campus
(North Manatee) that operates out
of the Ellenton Ice Rink. The North
Manatee site will be sharing the new

AROUND THE RANCH
FEBRUARY 18-MARCH 3, 2009
LAKEWOOD RANCH HERALD SUPPLEMENT 19
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Lakewood Ranch Safety Committee
A safety committee is maintained in
each Lakewood Ranch village. These
committees have representatives from
each neighborhood committee within
the villages. The committees monitor safety within the community and
implement changes where required
to improve personal and home safety
and security. The safety committees
meet periodically to maintain a process
for residents to report and resolve safety
concerns.
Security Reminders
Manatee County Sheriff Reminder
Residents should always call the Sheriff’s department whenever suspicious
behavior is observed. County Commissioners must approve funding increases
to add deputies for increased patrols in
Lakewood Ranch. Compared to other
Manatee districts, Lakewood Ranch’s
level of incidents is low. If no reports
are received, the county will have no
basis to consider additional staff. Greenbrook and Summerfield/Riverwalk residents should also contact Wackenhut
Security.
Recommended Security Actions
Actions can be taken by Lakewood
Ranch residents to reduce incidents
within the neighborhoods. These actions include:
1. Lock cars parked in driveways.
2. Remove garage door openers from
cars parked outside overnight.
3. Don't leave iPods, cell phones or oth-
er valuable items in parked cars.
4. Set security alarms when away from
the home (even for a short time).
5. Lock doors when working outside
around the home or in the backyard.
6. At night, lock doors between the garage and the house (use a deadbolt).
7. Lock bikes when not in use.
8. Close garage doors.
9. Keep post lamps in working order;
add landscape lighting, and keep carriage lights on during evening hours.
10. Add the telephone numbers for the
sheriff to your cell phone speed dial for
quick access. (Greenbrook and Summerfield/Riverwalk residents should also
add the telephone number for Wackenhut to their home phone speed dial.)
Reporting of Safety Concerns
Make sure that you know the process
to report safety concerns to ensure resolution.
If you see suspicious activity, report it
as follows:
1. Call 9-1-1 for emergencies
2. For non-emergencies, call the Sheriff
at 941-747-3011.
3. Always notify neighborhood committee members and, if a program exists, your neighborhood watch block
captain.
4. In Greenbrook and Summerfield/
Riverwalk, always contact Wackenhut
Security at 941-921-4475
Safety information is available on
Digital Village on the summary page for
each village and the home safety & security page.
