I like to describe making books for children as a multi-player game.
There is the initial interplay between author and publisher.
After a manuscript is acquired, other collaborative match-ups
take place between:
• author and editor
• author and illustrator
• illustrator and art director
• publisher and printer
• salesperson and bookseller

And finally, between book and reader.
Given the multiple levels of this publication game, getting a book
from inception to physical reality is a complicated process, which
can easily falter at any stage along the way. The biggest challenge
is to have a book emerge still new and fresh…not overwhelmed by
the process (or DOA).
If all goes well, a book takes eighteen months to reach its final
destination: the reader! The biggest danger in the negotiations
among the players is that they forget their playfulness. The players
can lose sight of the child—his interests, capacities, and needs.
As a small, independent publisher, we try to play the game differently.
Our core strength comes from our ability to collaborate as a creative,
interdisciplinary team. Collaboration demands good chemistry among
the partners, including playfulness, sense of fun, courage, and humor.
All must be able to tolerate the discomfort of ambiguity and be open
to ideas that may at first sound foolish.

We know that small children are often better at playing games than
adults. They thrive on humor and interactivity. And so we offer a list
of books under the name Blue Banana, all of them encouraging kids
to “play” as they read.
