The Customer
Dunham-Bush is a pioneer and industry leader in rotary screw
compressor technology for refrigeration systems and next generation
air-cooled rotary screw flooded chillers. They provide customized,
leading-edge cooling systems to commercial buildings, schools,
hospitals, airports, factories and residences.
It was formed through the merger of C.A. Dunham Company (Est.
1894) and Bush Manufacturing Company (Est. 1906) in the 1950s. With
over 100 years of combined Research and Development (R&D), they
produced one of the broadest lines of air-cooled and liquid-cooled
chillers in the industry.
From their corporate headquarters in Kajang, Malaysia, Dunham-Bush
operates a global network of sales and service offices to deliver
products and services to their customers. Their manufacturing facilities
are based in many countries including USA, England, Malaysia, and
China.
Their unique combination of customer intimacy and expertise that
results in products engineered and manufactured to efficiently and
reliably operate in its environment gives them the flexibility to
continuously respond to evolving conditions and emerging markets
around the globe.

Challenges
The Solution
Dunham-Bush had an existing network from a major networking vendor.
This network was not optimised for IP Telephony and did not have
sufficient High Availability features. This became a limitation for
Dunham-Bush as they implement new applications and migrate towards
Cloud Computing.
The new network that was proposed and installed at Dunham-Bush
utilized the following Allied Telesis products, ensuring a high performance solution to meet the network demands of Dunham-Bush.
Furthermore, annual recurring maintenance in terms of SMARTnet
increased their Operation Costs significantly.
• AT-x600-24Ts/XP - Advance Layer 3 Core switches
• AT-8000S/24POE- Layer 2 Stackable Fast Ethernet switches
• AT-8000S/48POE - Layer 2 Stackable Fast Ethernet switches
• AT-XPSR - 10 Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable
2 units each of the AT-x600-24Ts/XP are installed in their 2 main office
blocks. The first 2 units of core switches provides connectivity to the
AT-8000S/48POE in one of the main office block. The second set of core
switches provides connectivity to the server farm and to the rest of
Dunham-Bush’s operations. They have increased their bandwidth
between the 2 main office blocks from 1 Gbps to 20Gbps.
Customer Requirements
Dunham-Bush looked for a network with High Availability to support
their mission-critical applications within the organisation. Any network
outage would have significant impact to their business and productivity.
To move towards Cloud Computing, network connectivity has to be
reliable and predictable. In order to support IP Telephony, they needed
a network with low latency.
Figure 1 shows the diagram of the network provided for Dunham-Bush.
Dunham-Bush looked for a solution that did not require complete
re-training of their technical staff. In addition to product performance,
the evaluation process included assessment of their vendor’s technical
capability and support. Multi-vendor solution integration was important
as Dunham-Bush wanted to implement Best-of-Breed solutions within
their IT infrastructure.

Benefits of the New Solution
Future-Proof
Powerful simplicity achieved with Virtual Chassis Stacking (VCS)
The new infrastructure will easily respond to any future changes with
ample bandwidth available.
The new network utilizes Allied Telesis Virtual Chassis Stacking (VCS)
technology which delivers resiliency and scalability to Dunham-Bush’s
network, simplifying management while increasing performance. Fast
failover further enhance the solution by providing absolutely minimal
network downtime in the event of a problem.
In a normal operation with VCS, all bandwidth and all routing
performance in the network are fully available for use all the time. If a
link or device fails, some of the bandwidth or forwarding performance
will be lost, but the network will still be fully operational and all
remaining resources will continue to be fully utilized.
The key advantage of VCS comes from configuring the links from the
Access switches to the Core as an 802.3ad link aggregation. With link
aggregation across ports on different virtual chassis members, there is
no perceptible disruption in the case of a link failure; and the full
bandwidth of the network is available. Link aggregation is also used to
connect network resources, such as servers, across the virtual chassis
members. This ensures device and path resiliency for Dunham-Bush.
High Availability with Fast Convergence
The Allied Telesis SwitchBlade x600 Layer 3+ switches offer an
impressive set of features in a high-value package.
Non-blocking architecture and comprehensive low-latency wire-speed
QoS provides flow-based traffic management with full classification,
prioritization, traffic shaping and min.max bandwidth profile.
Dunham-Bush is able to enjoy a boosted network performance and
guaranteed delivery of business-critical Ethernet services and
applications. Time-critical services like voice and video take precedence
over non-essential services like file downloads, maintaining
responsiveness of Enterprise applications. Voice VLAN is a key
convergence feature of x600 which automatically separates voice and
data traffic into two different VLANS. This automatic separation places
delay-sensitive traffic into a voice-dedicated VLAN, which simplifies QoS
configurations for Dunham-Bush.
The AT-8000S POE switches provides high performance Layer 2
switching in an affordable fixed configuration platform combined with
Power over Ethernet to provide power to edge devices including IP
phones and wireless access points. The stacking capability integrated into
this platform is configured as a resilient ring topology designed to
provide high reliability and simplified management for higher port
density applications.
Page 4 | Allied Telesis Case Study: Dunham-Bush
The x600 has a choice of 24-port and 48-port versions, coupled with the
ability to stack up to 4 units, which means a flexible network
configuration from a small workgroup to a large business. The choice of
1 Gagabit or 10 Gigabit uplink ports allows Dunham-Bush to tailor the
uplink bandwidth to suit their network application. Stacking bandwidth
is provided separately from the 10 Gigabit uplink ports which effectively
allows Dunham-Bush to have up to a massive 160 Gbps of uplink
bandwidth.
The AT8000S/24 supports both Gigabit & Fast Ethernet Small
Form-factor Pluggables (SFPs). This makes it ideal should Dunmah-Bush
phased in Gigabit fibre solutions over time. Support for both speeds of
SFPs allows Dunham-Bush to stay within budget as they migrate to
faster technology.
Secure
The advanced security features of x600 protects Dunham-Bush network
- from Access to the Core. NAC give unprecedented control over user
access to Dunham-Bush’s network. If multiple users share a port then
multi-authentication can be used. Different users on the same port can
be assigned into different VLANs, and so given different levels of network
access. Additionally, a Guest VLAN can be configured to provide a
catch-all of all users who aren’t authenticated.
Cost Effective
Being able to provide a total network solution for Dunham-Bush helps
to lower integration cost, making it more cost-effective to operate in
the long run. In addition, IP Telephony lowers the cost of
communications which further lowers the operating costs.
Easy to Use
The x600 switches run the advanced AlliedWare Plus Fully Featured
Operating System delivering a rich feature set and an industry-standard
Command Line Interface (CLI). This significantly reduces learning time
and minimize cost of deployment. In addition to the CLI, the x600
switches features a comprehensive GUI for easy access to monitoring
and configuration.
Service and Support
Allied Telesis provided good service and support during the whole
process and designed customer training and workshops, enabling the
solution to be implemented smoothly at Dunham-Bush’s offices and
factory.
