Spring 2015

Spring Issue
March 2015
Letter from the Owner
Spring 2015
www.allislandlandscape.com
Dear Folks,
Spring can’t come soon
enough! This winter has been
an interesting one to say the
least. It started out as the
winter that didn’t seem to
come, other than a few cold
days, and we had clear
weather and were working on
projects right through midJanuary.
That all came to a screeching
halt when the January 2015
Blizzard hit. Our crews
worked for weeks afterwards,
just trying to clean up and
haul out snow for our
customers. We are already
seeing some of the damage
from snow and the snow
removal process. Please
contact us ASAP if you need
any pruning or have lawn
care issues from the winter
storms.

we doubled in size and we’re

Winter Damage Assessment
Once the snow and ice melt away, it’s
time to evaluate the health of the trees
in your landscape. New England Tree
Preservation offers a free assessment
and estimate to determine what issues
may exist and what we can do to help.
It’s been a stressful winter with heavy
accumulations of wet snow that can
cause damage. Evergreens and weak
wooded trees are more susceptible to
breakage than deciduous and hardwood
trees. Often snow damage to evergreens is not apparent until spring,
since a broken branch will retain its
green color until warm weather. Many

homeowners often blame this damage
on insects, disease or other problems.
Our trained staff can identify overload
scenarios, poor limb structure, and pest
and nutrient deficiencies which can
make your trees more susceptible to
harm.
New England Tree Preservation offers a
full range of services including pruning,
removals, stump grinding, 24 hour
emergency assistance as well as preventative measures that include diagnostics,
pest eradication and fertilization.

IN THE GARDEN
Witch Hazel
For color in the winter garden, Witch
Hazel or Hamamelis ranks among the
best. Its bright fragrant blossoms
appear in February and March on a
medium to large shrub growing
between 10’ and 20’ tall depending on
the cultivar.
‘Arnold’s Promise’, a lightly fragrant
bright yellow Witch Hazel, is one of
the oldest and very best hybrids
introduced by Harvard University’s
Arnold Arboretum in 1928. The
rounded dark blue green leaves are
handsome in summer and turn a bright
apricot/yellow in fall. It is tolerant of a
range of PH but is best grown in moist,
organic laden, free draining soil. Witch

Hazel will bloom best in full sun but
will produce a respectable show in part
shade. They are lovely under-planted
with simple green foliage such as
liriope or pachysandra.
Other favorite varieties include:
‘Jelena’ – fragrant coppery orange
blooms and bright orange red foliage in
fall. Horizontal habit, smaller than
‘Arnold’s Promise.’
‘Ruby Glow’- Bronze red flowers on
an upright spreading shrub 15’ tall.
‘Pallida’- A shorter yellow flowering
cultivar shrub better suited to small
spaces.

recovery process and it will force
the plants to push up new shoots
and blades.
Plowing damage needs to be
cleaned of excess debris, graded,
top dressed and reseeded. It almost
never fixes itself and requires work
beyond nature’s remedies.
Spring Lawn Care
After a long snowy winter your
lawn may be showing some signs of
damage. Generally when snowpack
remains for several weeks, your
lawn will suffer from a variety of
issues. Snow mold, plowing damage, and moles and voles are the top
three most common issues.
Snow mold will appear on the grass
as a gray greasy-like matter on the
surface of the lawn. This will generally grow out as the lawn breaks
dormancy and temperatures increase. An application of a complete fertilizer will help with the

Moles and voles will often leave
“tunnels” or “channels” throughout
the lawn surface as they create a
super highway under the snow pack,
and as the snow recedes you are left
with the resulting damage.
Depending on the extent of the damage, some areas will recover with
the spring flush of growth, but most
often this damage will require top
dressing and seeding work to fill in
the areas.
Give us a call to see how we can
help with this winter’s damage.
